In this episode, I am joined by Dave Doble of Tampa Bay Brewing Company. One of Tampa Bay's iconic and well-visited breweries, Tampa Bay Brewing Company is celebrating 25 years in July 2022. Visited by both Michael Jackson and Guy Fieri, many visitors know TBBC for its welcoming pubs in both Ybor City and Westchase. In the mid-1990s, the City of Tampa did not have many options for craft beer until John and Vicki Doble put their faith in their son Johnny's vision of opening a homebrew store called the Brew Shack. Johnny and his family grew that store into a brewpub and one of Tampa's first ‘destination' breweries. Once the pub opened, Johnny was the head brewer and Dave Doble left the family business to train as a pilot. Dave talks about when his brother tragically died in a fire in 2003, how he decided return to the brewery his family had founded. In our interview, Dave talks about that return and how he and his family decided to grow TBBC's business to its current heights. Dave also talks about changing the TBBC beer lineup and how the brewery's growth has been helped by Reef Donkey, a GABF Bronze-medal winning pale ale named for the Amberjack, a game fish which lives in Florida's wrecks and reefs.You can listen to the podcast here, or on your favorite podcast platform. One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was interviewing Meb Keflezighi, who is an inspiration to us. He is the only man to win a silver medal in the Olympics (Athens 2004), win NYC Marathon (2009), and win the Boston Marathon (2014). Watching his success was inspiring to us, but even more than that, his humility and the way he lives his life with faith, family, and education as top priorities is a key reason he inspires those around him.  He also has a foundation and through it helps support and encourage people with goals in much the same way he was supported by his family, his faith, and the community around him.  We interviewed him at the Expo and wanted to bring you that interview in its entirety.  We will feature the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic, Kojak's House of Ribs, and Tampa Bay Brewing Company in a full episode later this week. A restaurant in Florida has been ordered to pay over $70,000 to its employees after numerous labor law violations. The Tampa Bay Brewing Company violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), according to the US Department of Labor. The restaurant broke the law by allowing managers to take money from the restaurant's tip pool even though they were not entitled to tips. The Department of Labor added that the company incorrectly exempted a manager from overtime. According to the FLSA, companies can pay less than the minimum wage to employees who get tips as long as the companies meet all the legal requirements. However, by allowing managers to receive some of the tips, the Tampa Bay Brewing Company became ineligible to use tips as part of their employees' wages. The restaurant was then required to pay 36 employees the full minimum wage. General Manager Jeffrey Hall explained that the company has agreed to pay $70,575 in total.  According to the company, it has processed the repayments, and the affected employees will receive their back wages in a lump sum. Tampa Wage and Hour Division District Director Nicolas Ratmiroff said that the agency's goal is to make sure all employers have a good understanding of their responsibilities in compliance with the law. He encouraged employers or workers with questions to call their offices and speak privately with trained agency personnel.

Episode 42 Comes to you live (sort of) from my hotel room in Tampa, Fl! It was my first time in Tampa and so I checked out a couple guitar shops (check out my Instagram feed for pictures) and some local beer (Thank you Tampa Bay Brewing Company!) While I was there I met a couple young guitarists, one who was just starting out and another who absolutely blew me away with his skills. And that's the topic of this episode. Guitar shops: Where guitarists can hang out and meet each other. We are full swing in the digital age and there are so many great things because of it. For example, I was able to record this podcast in my hotel room on my iPad and then upload it to my FTP site. I love the age we live in and I love being able to order anything I want or need at anytime. What I miss is the local guitar shop. They are dwindling. Where I currently live we only have two local shops and they are ok. One has been getting better and better. What's it been doing differently? focusing on the "community" aspect of being a guitarist.
