We sit down with 3 (2 former, 1 current) kings of the Krewe of Sant Yago out of Tampa, FL. The Krewe of Sant Yago is a 50+ year old brotherhood most notable for participating in the Gasparilla parade season in the Tampa Bay Area. Most people might believe that Krewe Life is all partying and fun but the Krewe of Sant Yago is very different. Sant Yago is one of the most philanthropic organizations in the Tampa Bay Area participating in the Knights with a Heart event and The Illuminated Knight Parade in Ybor. But one aspect of the Krewe that we are most proud of is the Krewe of Sant Yago Education Foundation which to date has provided $2 Million in scholarships to students in need that attend USF, UT and HCC here in the Tampa Bay Area. We sit down with current El Rey (King) Chris Cubero, El Rey 47 Paul Gigante, hosts of the PC Podcast, and El Rey 41 Randy Conte to discuss brotherhood, health and the importance of building relationships beyond the general surface level of cars, chicks and sports that so many men adopt. Our conversation is fun but we also discuss some of the hard hitting topics in men's health. There is a loneliness epidemic in men, with fewer men reporting having a close friend to turn to in a time of need. In addition, male suicide rates are at an all time high and many of these issues could be alleviated by caring for one another and calling each other out when we know something is not right. The statistics change when we can openly have the conversation, thank you Chris, Paul and Randy for sharing your experiences in the Krewe, life and fostering friendships. We can change the way men view their mental health one discussion at a time. A Tapestry of Cultural DiversityTampa's cultural landscape is as diverse as its population, reflecting the influence of various communities that have shaped the city's identity. From the historic Ybor City, once known as the "Cigar Capital of the World," to the contemporary art scene in the Tampa Bay area, the city is a melting pot of different cultures and traditions. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant Cuban, Spanish, and Italian heritage, evident in the local cuisine, architecture, and lively festivals that celebrate Tampa's rich multicultural tapestry. Some of the most unique areas of Tampa to visit are Downtown Tampa, South Tampa/Bayshore, Ybor City, and Citrus Park.Ybor City is a vibrant, historic district filled with attractions, unique restaurants, and plenty of entertainment opportunities. The area is known for its Cuban heritage, evidenced by the many cigar factories and Cuban restaurants, bakeries, and cafes. Ybor City also has numerous antique stores and specialty shops, accompanied by a variety of museums, art galleries, nightclubs, and music venues. The area holds several festivals, such as the annual Cuban Sandwich Festival, as well as performances from the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team. Ybor City is also home to the world's largest fireworks display, held on the Fourth of July every year. It's also home to many popular restaurants, like The Columbia Restaurant and The Bricks of Ybor City. Overall, Ybor City is an ideal destination for visitors who appreciate culture, history, and a unique atmosphere.A Paradise for Nature Enthusiasts For nature enthusiasts, Tampa offers a myriad of opportunities to explore its breathtaking natural beauty. The city is renowned for its stunning beaches, including the famed Clearwater Beach and the picturesque Honeymoon Island State Park, where visitors can indulge in water sports, sunbathe on pristine sands, or enjoy a stroll along the shoreline. While a recent shooting in Ybor City may put the Tampa neighborhood in the spotlight, Ybor has a long and rich history and was instrumental in shaping the city of Tampa. The cigar industry was lured from revolutionary Cuba and became home to the city's economic and power base. In this episode of Florida Matters, we talk with Sarah McNamara, the author of a new book called "Ybor City, Crucible of the Latina South." She's an assistant professor of history at Texas A&M University. In the book, McNamara explores how cross-border exchanges over three generations influenced what Ybor and Tampa would become. It's also personal to McNamara, whose family is from Ybor City.

2016's Live By Night was a rare miss by star and director Ben Affleck. On paper, it had everything you'd think it needed to be successful: great cast (Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper, Chris Messina, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller), a cool premise (mob sets up new scene during Prohibition), and a director in Affleck who has emerged as one of Hollywood's best. But it didn't quite hit. But that doesn't mean it's not great for us. Live By Night offers the opportunity to talk about Ybor City, the "Harlem of Tampa," and a town many of you have never heard of. But you should know Ybor City. As guest Sarah McNamara shows in her new book, Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South, the comunidad features a vibrant Cuban American culture and history all to its own, and understanding it is key to knowing both Florida and the United States. We talk about the history of Ybor City, the role of race in Cuban American communities during Jim Crow, the changing nature of womanhood in Ybor families during the early 20th century, and the differences between Tampa and Miami's Cuban communities. This is maybe the best episode we've ever done.About our guest:Sarah McNamara is Assistant Professor of History and core faculty in the Latina/o/x & Mexican American Studies Program at Texas A&M University. McNamara's research centers on Latinx, women and gender, immigration, and labor histories in the modern United States. Her first book, Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South, examines the U.S. South as a transnational, multi-racial borderland and argues that in this space gender and sexuality played a central role in the (re)making of race, community, region, and nation. Ybor City is the history of three generations of migrant, immigrant, and U.S. born Latinas and Latinos— predominantly from Cuba, the Caribbean, and the Americas—who collided in Tampa, Florida from the late nineteenth through the mid twentieth centuries. While popular narratives of the origins of Latina/o/x Florida focus on Cuban immigrants who fled the rise of Fidel Castro in the 1950s and 1960s, McNamara centers on earlier generations whose migration, labor, activism, and leftist politics established the foundation of latinidad in the sunshine state. This portrait of political shifts that defined Ybor City highlights the underexplored role of women's leadership within movements for social and economic justice as it illustrates how people, places, and politics become who and what they are.You can find her on twitter at @Dr_SarahMac

We can't wait to runcation with you soon! RUN We begin our seventh year with a tradition: Richard's Father's Day Family Walk / Jog at Uele in Tampa. This year we were lucky to have a team of six from the Runcation Nation, plus two who could not be with us yet still there in spirit. Dawn and Jessica, who planned to come but could not: we wish we could have had you there! To Kelly and Aden Anderson, Christy Van Allen, and Greg Elsberry, thank you for joining our team. Thank you to Michael Kilgore, retired but still organizing this event for the Colombia Restaurant Group, for allowing us to give away tickets to this great event! This year, Richard Gonzmart, the race's namesake, was there. We recap what he shared with us, the significant milestone reached on this tenth anniversary of the event, the course, the shirts, and the overall great feeling we come away with every year supporting a great place like Moffitt Cancer Center. Find out more about this event and the Colombia Restaurant Group's upcoming nighttime run, Richard's Run for Life, through the streets of Ybor (including a great afterparty) in November here: http://richardsrunforlife.org/ EAT Ulele, a restaurant, and brewery full of connections to the rich history of Florida and Tampa, was our destination for this Father's Day menu that we could not miss. We recap our meal, full of specials just from the specialty menu for Father's Day. We might have had some from the regular menu, too! If you are ever in Tampa, you must try this Florida fresh, and Native-American inspired menu. (We know this is not the drink segment, but we can't help but also say, check out all of the brews created by Head Brewmaster Tim Shackton, too.) Here's a peek at the menu: https://ulele.com/wp-content/uploads/Ulele-menu.pdf DRINK This week, as we waited for our reservation at Ulele, we walked right next door to Armature Works and sampled a beverage that piqued our interest, the Buddy Brew Screw from the fine folks at Buddy Brew! Armature Works has plenty of food and beverage options, but we were after some coffee. Yes, we said it would never happen again, but we did this race without coffee and needed this unique boost we had never seen before! We will be back for more of their menu in the future! Here's more information about Armature Works and Buddy Brew: https://armatureworks.com/ https://www.buddybrew.com/pages/cafe-menu THAT'S A WRAP! Get RUNCATION NATION FAMOUS!
