Episode 502 - Wayne Wambles, Griffon & Sphynx Brewing Happy Monday, Thieves! We're catching up with an old friend of the show today. Wayne Wambles was the head brewer at Cigar City Brewing way back when we used to record at Hunahpu's Day (RIP). He's responsible for some of the most well know beers out there, including the fest's namesake stout, and has left a significant imprint on the craft beer industry. Fast forward almost a decade and Wayne is now running his own brewery in the hills outside of Asheville, North Carolina. We talk about his journey through multiple Cigar City ownerships and how he came to buy a small brewery to make his own. As always, it's a good listen with some fun beers in the black glass. Tune in and let us know what you think!***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. Barry and Abigail discuss Drag by k.d. lang and sample Theoretical Jam, Maduro Brown Ale, and Fancy Papers™ from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida. Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album! Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don't Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. We played a bit of The Hollies' version (in Barry's eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe. We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band's The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions. Abigail compared k.d. lang's vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland's performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Congratulations to Jeff “Jafo” Shettler! At time of episode release, his bonus episode, Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers) is our most listened-to episode of all time. We discussed the incredible backstory of Till the Heart Caves In, which is a “cover” of a Roy Orbison song that was never recorded. lang and Orbison had a previous connection as lang performed in Roy Orbison & Friends - A Black and White Night in 1988. Read more about the special! We believe that Jane Siberry wrote Hain't It Funny specifically for k.d. lang. On Siberry's album, “Hain't It Funny” is preceded by k.d. lang, a series of recorded voicemails between Siberry and lang. (NSFW) In this lively episode, the crew dives into a mix of nostalgia, creativity, and celebration. The legendary Randal the Enamel Remover makes a comeback in conversation, and Ed proposes an intriguing blend of stout and sour beers. They review the Hockey Czech! Pilsner from Goldwater Brewing Co. and reflect on the bittersweet end of the Arizona Coyotes and Grand Canyon Brewing's Kachina beer, with Nate and Ed expressing their stages of grief over these losses. They discuss the layoff of Cigar City Brewing workers in Tampa by the newly created Monster Brewing. They ponder whether Ballast Point, now brewed by Kings and Convicts, is making a comeback in the craft beer world. The episode also highlights the 2024 World Beer Cup winners, including local favorites like Goldwater Brewing, Pedal Haus, OHSO Brewing, and 12 West Brewing. Ed reads off other category winners. Finally, Ed poses the question of which event holds more prestige: GABF or the World Beer Cup, and floats the idea of hosting their own HCPC Beer Awards. You smell that? That's some prime-cut, USDA-certified rap beef in the air. Before we hop into the cypher, we have to touch on the epic show that was WrestleMania 40. Then, it's on to Kendrick Lamar's Drake diss, J. Cole's diss-turned-apology aimed at Kendrick, and the wait for Drake's response (which we got soon after recording --- soon to be discussed on a later episode). We've also got a pair of trailers hot off the presses, featuring Ti West's trilogy capper, MaXXXine, and the Joker sequel. Finally, we end with the unfortunate events that've rocked a fan-favorite brewery to our southwest. Cigar City Brewing has been gutted of its heart and soul by owners, Monster, laying off 12 workers including the legendary brew master, Wayne Wambles. There's going out sad, and then there's this --- a not-so-friendly reminder that your favorite local craft brewery needs your patronage more than the evil empires of the craft beer world. RIP to the craft brewery that helped spark this show in the first place. You can still buy Jai Alai and visit the brewhouse but without the people who helped Cigar City become a pillar of Florida craft beer, the forecast is anything but sunshine and rainbows. ...anyway, Cheers! 0:00 Beer Intro 5:02 WrestleMania 40 Review 29:19 Kendrick Lamar vs. J. Disclaimer: Ride the Clydesdales at your own riskTouchdown for Beer Commercials: The episode kicks off with a high-energy discussion about Super Bowl Sunday and its iconic beer commercials. Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors Light, and Michelob Ultra all vie for our attention, but according to the latest buzz, Michelob Ultra emerged as the top-selling brew of the big game. It's a fascinating peek into the battle for marketing supremacy in the world of sports and suds.Busch Gardens & Sweet Memories: From the bright lights of the stadium, the conversation takes a nostalgic turn with a visit to Busch Gardens. Memories of childhood trips come flooding back, along with a mention of Eagle Brand snacks. This unexpected pairing sparks a discussion about branding strategies and the strange yet sometimes successful partnerships that emerge in the food and beverage world.Monster Shakes Up the Craft Beer Scene: Speaking of unexpected turns, the episode dives into the surprising news of Monster Energy eliminating Cigar City Brewing's brewmaster Wayne Wambles' position. This sparks important questions about the relationship between craft and corporate brewing, and whether such collaborations ultimately compromise the spirit of craft beer.Tax Time for Beer?: But not all discussions are lighthearted. The episode tackles the serious issue of domestic beer tax rates, comparing 2022 and 2023 numbers. This insightful segment shed light on the challenges faced by independent breweries and the potential impact of tax reform on the craft beer industry's future.Crafty Triumphs: Despite the tax hurdles, there's good news on the horizon! The episode highlights the positive statistic that craft beer sales are actually outpacing total beer sales in early 2024. This is a major win for the craft beer community, showcasing its resilience and innovation in the face of challenges.Global Beers & Pinball Perfection: Beyond the United States, the episode celebrates a historic moment: the United Arab Emirates opens its first-ever craft brewery after years of contract brewing in the US. This exciting development marks a significant milestone in the global expansion of the craft beer scene.Beyond the Brews: But brewing isn't all there is to life! The episode throws in some fun segments, including "Beer Flights, The Dadverse, & Pinball." In yet another unexpected twist of events, this week, we're coming from separate locations, this time due to scheduling conflicts. As such, that means that Erik wasn't able to bring a paired beer for this week's episode, so we've got another 'BYOB' episode, where both of us are drinking what we bring! This time around, Erik is rocking a Double IPA from Fiden's Brewing Company up in Albany, NY, while I brought something out from the depths of my fridge, a Wheat Ale courtesy of Cigar City Brewing company down in Tampa, FL. This time around, we're discussing one of the most influential and iconic horror movies of all time, Ridley Scott's 'Alien' from 1979.So kick back and enjoy our conversation about two of our favorite things: cold beer and scary movies!Follow us on Instagram, and say hi!

We're going back to where it all began on The Beer Hour this week! Johnathan and Maria are first joined by Cigar City founder Joey Redner and Vice President of Marketing Justin Clark to share the story of the legendary Florida craft brewery, where Johnathan got his start in the business! Then Max Skinner of Movember joins the show to talk about the moustache movement and the importance of raising awareness about men's health.
This week, I'm excited to be joined by Tim Ogden of Deviant Libations in Florida, for a conversation that revolves around inclusivity in the beer space, and creating a taproom that reflects personality and passion. This is the last of the shows I recorded during the Florida Brewers Guld Conference this past summer, and I was grateful to meet and spend time with Tim Ogden. Ogden started home brewing in the late 90s and after moving to Florida at a time when craft beer was far less accessible, and they became an avid homebrewer out of necessity. It soon became apparent that working in the industry would be a dream come true. They started out at Hops, a brewpub chain, and moved on from there in 2009 to help grow with Cigar City Brewing. In 2008 after receiving a scholarship for the concise brewing course at Siebel Institute granted by the Florida Brewers Guild, Ogden served two terms on the guild Board of Directors. Tim is known for adjunct sweet stouts, fruity IPAs, crispy clean lagers and not-so-tart sour ale, and has a passion for constant reinvention and blurring of the boundaries between styles. Tim leverages creativity and personality to navigate the space between traditional beer and things a little less common to create beverages that are unique and fun, while still accessible to a wide array of people, and is intent on creating a space of radical inclusivity where all are not only accepted but genuinely feel welcome. When in Tampa, one must visit Cigar City Brewing to drink Jai Alai. So why not share some IPAs with one of the most downright curious players in the entire league? Patrick Laird started a summer reading program at Cal, had fans getting his stat line tatted on their thigh as a rookie with the Miami Dolphins and remains an intensely-curious individual to the bone. He's entering his fifth pro season in 2023, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We chatted about everything: His wild rise, the value of reading a good book in the Twitter Age, the concept of "free will" (he's not a believer) and how football can be such a powerful force of good. He knows such tribalism is core to our biology. Alien 3 is a massive disappointment. After the insane action masterpiece that was Aliens, expectations were high for how Ellen Ripley's story would progress. Sadly, Fox, the studio behind the beloved franchise, didn't seem to have any ideas. Multiple scripts came and went, as did directors. Ultimately, the project fell to David Fincher. If you told that to someone now, the excitement would be palpable. But this was 1992, and Fincher had yet to direct a movie. Renowned for his music video work, the first-time director had to fight tooth and nail with the studio throughout the shoot. With a script that was being rewritten on the fly, much of the problems that plague Alien 3 cannot be attributed to him. This is a cautionary tale about wanting to exploit a valuable IP without taking the time to make sure the ideas are worth exploring. Literally, Alien 3 is just Alien in a different setting with a sterile cast of characters who all look and behave the same. That is the opposite of what fans expected after James Cameron blew their Xenomorph-loving minds with Aliens. Hence, why Alien 3 suffered with critics and fell to its death at the box office. On a production budget more than triple its predecessor, it grossed $30 million less domestically. Those kind of numbers are liable to make something burst out of a greedy executive's chest. Now, sit back, kill your mouth lice with a Cosmic Crown from Cigar City Brewing, and reanimate Bishop for some key exposition! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Da Bros are back with another brewery deep dive! They sample beers from Tampa based Cigar City Brewing
The Tampa Bay beer scene is among the country's most exciting. I've visited the Tampa - St. Pete region at least once a year for most of my life. It's where my family vacationed during spring breaks and it's where my folks retired. So as I grew up and started getting interested in craft beer, I naturally used my trips to Florida to explore the local Tampa Bay beer scene. I'd sneak away to check out the local bars and liquor stores in search of something interesting. And in the early days, it was pretty bleak. I'd be excited to find Yuengling or Michelob Amber Bock in the local Publix or some dusty craft beer bottles in some seedy convenience store. I was excited when I found Ybor City Brewing Company. But progress was slow. Until it wasn't. Tampa Bay is now one of the country's liveliest places for beer, representing an eclectic array of producers of everything from classic wheat beers and easy drinking IPAs to monster barrel aged stouts. So I'm excited this week to sit down with two gentlemen who possess an impressive trove of information and insights into the Tampa Bay beer scene. Sean Norquist is the executive Director of the Florida Brewers Guild, a role he has had since 2017. He is responsible for growing membership, coordinating events (including the excellent annual conference that I attended a few years back, as well as representing breweries and their interests before the state legislature in Tallahassee. Before taking on that role, he was a beer writer and also helped run Tampa Bay Beer Week.Mark DeNote is a freelance beer writer and communicator who runs Florida Beer News, a site dedicated to the state's emerging craft breweries, thriving breweries, and the craft beer history of Florida. Mark is also the author of two books about Florida craft beer, The Great Florida Craft Beer Guide and Tampa Bay Beer: A Heady History. This Episode is Sponsored by:Pub Culture BeercationsStop living vicariously through other people's social media posts and get out and make some memories of your own! Cooper and Nolan are taking a Florida vacation this week when they check out MIAMI CONNECTION! Written, starring, casted and partly directed by local Tae Kwon Do legend Y.K. Kim, this 80s regional cinema delight is a perfect example of what happens when a man with a dream finds someone willing to fund it. Amazingly, the combination of enthusiastic amateurs, bargain basement special effects, and positively-themed original songs produced something that's truly hilarious, which probably explains why clips of this movie have been passed around the internet ever since the internet was a thing. Bottom line? This is an absolute must-see from the Sunshine State, so come on down; this episode (featuring a beer from Cigar City Brewing) is a connection you won't want to miss!

The Brew Is Out There! The American Brown Ale feels like almost a thing of the past, but how can you make this foundational style of American craft beer? Drew talks with Wayne Wambles of Cigar City Brewing about lessons learned from the multi-award winning Maduro Brown and where it both reflects and differs from the nebulous idea of the style. Inspired by the finest witbiers of Belgium, Frost Proof Belgian-Style White Ale boasts a slightly higher alcohol strength than many beers in the style, lending a more expressive fruit character and assertive flavor profile. From the Palmetto Prairie and beyond, this beer offers the perfect accompaniment to food, friendship, and the outdoors.Florida Man Down Under 6.5 ABVIndia Pale AleWe've turned “the Worlds worst super hero upside down by brewing a moderate alcohol version of his namesake beer with fruits forward Motueka, Galaxy and Nelson sauvin hops grown in the Southern Hemisphere, creating a flavor profile that's crazier then an alligator in boxing a kangaroo. While the number of frontons in our home state of Florida has dropped since the sport's peak in the mid-1980s, Cigar City Brewing pays homage to the sport and the dedicated players and patrons who keep this Florida tradition alive with its flagship ale. A hero who's forgotten more about amateur taxidermy and alligator rasslin' than you'll ever know. What better way to pay tribute to our beloved Florida Man than with a big ol' Double India Pale Ale brewed with a nearly criminal amount of hops and a moderate bitterness that just about matches Florida Man's general disposition. This hopped-up whopper of a beer is big in character and guaranteed to sear itself into your memory, just like “the world's worst superhero,” Florida Man.Cosmic Crown 9.0 % ABVBelgian-Style Strong Golden AleWe've taken inspiration from beyond the cosmos for this golden-hued Strong Golden Ale and added Galaxy hops to impart passionfruit and peach qualities to its profile of ripe fruit and light peppery spice.
Predators is the ideal set up for a sequel to the 1987 original. It includes a cast of eclectic mercenaries being pursued by the titular create. Only this time, there are three of them, and it's on their home turf. Yes, Predators takes us back to lush jungles, which, honestly, are a much more interesting backdrop for the hunt than either LA or a small town. Yet, the setting is not the only good idea this movie brings to the table. You've got a Predator blood feud; the conceit that all the nefarious characters dropped into this scenario are on a game preserve; and the loony survivor who's stuck on the planet. Where Predators is lacking is in its execution. It's not a bad film, by any means; it's just one that could've benefitted from a little more style to its rule of cool. Hence why the reviews were just lukewarm—65% on Rotten Tomatoes with 205 of them; and audiences didn't flock to cinemas for it. It grossed $52 million domestically ($127 worldwide) on a budget of $40 million. Those numbers are quite possibly a reflection of the godawful Alien vs Predator movies that came before it, too. Anyway, sit back, booby trap a Cosmic Crown Belgian-Style Golden Ale from Cigar City Brewing, and stay away from the Danny Trap-jo! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla, and a special guest are hanging with Larry Fishburne and his imaginary best friend. Todd DiMatteo is the owner and brewer here at Good Word Brewing and Public House in Duluth, GA and has been turning out some of the more flavorful, interesting, and low abv beers that I've had in a while. He has a long career in beer and hospitality, including a long term at the Brick Store Pub, an Atlanta institution, the influence of that bar can be felt in his beers today, with nods to traditional styles and an appreciation for well-established international beer regions. It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community. First up, The Tampa Beer Run. Just a spoiler, your host is a huge dork! Hey, Everyone! Welcome to our first episode, where we head to Tampa, Florida, for the Tampa Beer Run. Yes, we get to sample beer on the course, but more importantly, this run raises funds for My Hope Chest, which helps women pay for reconstructive surgery after their courageous battles with breast cancer. After the run, we need to refuel, and what better way than to sample Tampa on a plate at the Columbia Restaurant. Our final stop on this trip is Cigar City Brewing, where you can spot the rolling of cigars and a long line of tasty beer on tap, and ours is just a sampling of their libations. For more information, check out the show notes below. MY HOPE CHEST Connect with My Hope Chest at their website and learn about their upcoming 5K Glow Run in April 2018, also in the Tampa area. AL LOPEZ PARK This is a beautiful park that is flat and easy race. There was no time limit or specific pace per mile you needed to adhere to, so this race is great for beginners or run/walkers. TAMPA BEER RUN ON FACEBOOK We paid a reasonable entry fee of $45 and added a VIP ticket for $12 more to get a couple of extra beers at the after-party, souvenir Tampa Beer Run glasses, and a white cotton t-shirt. COLUMBIA RESTAURANT This Tampa staple has been around since 1905, and we happened to sample these: Crab Croquette Spanish Bean Soup 1905 Salad Cuban Sandwich CIGAR CITY BREWING At this brewery, there are some fantastic beers, and here is a list of a few we recommend: Pollona! Last week, word got out that Patrick Rue, the founder of The Bruery in Orange County California, and more recently the founder and operator of Erosion Wines in Napa had acquired a 50 percent stake in Moonlight Brewery, a beloved northern California brewery founded 30 years ago by Brian Hunt. Moonlight is known for its beers like Death & Taxes and Reality Czech and had been half owned by Lagunitas via Heineken for the past six years. I first learned of the news via Beer by BART, a great site run by Gail Ann Williams and Steve Shapiro. If you're not already following them on social media, rectify that quickly. A subsequent press release release from the brewery noted that “Patrick will serve in an advisory capacity and will direct an oak barrel-aging beer program that enhances the integrity and heritage of Moonlight.” It continued by saying that under the Heineken co-ownership Moonlight "packaging shifted from exclusively draft to additionally offering beers in cans, and both production and distribution have grown all while keeping sales limited to Northern California. The new ownership strengthens Moonlight's dedication to remaining locally owned. This will allow for patient growth, greater availability of its coveted beers to its fans and wholesale partners, while maintaining the deliciousness and highest quality for which Moonlight is so well known.” Press release aside, in this episode we hear from the owners directly. "They say that beer brings people together, and that was certainly evident last week in Minneapolis as much of the brewing world gathered for the Craft Brewers Conference and it seems that at some point or another everyone made the trip to Fair State Brewing Cooperative. I was among them, and had the chance to sit down with co-founders Niko Tonks and Evan Sallee. From the beginning, as the brewery name suggests, the pair along with other co-founder Matt Hauck, wanted consumers to be involved with the business. Not just funding, but with meaningful feedback. Fitting that their plan came together at Black Star, another brewery co-op in Austin, and when the doors opened here in 2014 they became the first in Minnesota to follow the model and only the third in the nation. Now with more than 2,000 members the brewery is hitting a stride. It has been shaped by the pandemic, of course, but the time of COVID has helped Evan and Niko dial in the business, focus more deeply on recipes and really think about the future. We recorded this in the taproom over a pitcher of pilsner and get into many aspects of the business, and the emerging interest in non-alcoholic beers, including one they had on their taproom menu and that I thoroughly enjoyed."-John HollThis Episode is sponsored by:Cigar City Brewing Co.Check out Fancy Papers from Cigar City Brewing. Much of the professional brewing world is focused on Minnesota this week as the annual Craft Brewers Conference is happening, along with the World Beer Cup competition. I thought it would be a good to check in with a brewer in the state – or at least one connected with the state. Minnesota beer laws are wonky which has led to creative solutions. Austin Jevne the Owner & Head Brewer of Humble Forager, which is contract brewed in Wisconsin as well as Minneapolis, will explain how the brand developed out of an existing brewpub in Rochester, Minnesota. From finding local ingredients on his travels that inspire new beers, to scaling up from small batches to large ones while not sacrificing flavor or ethos, Austin takes us through his creative process on brewing that now extends to hard seltzer. He's also big on collaborations and gives us a curtain raiser on one that is being brewed this week with Other Half Brewery. Austin sees beer as an adventure and wants every recipe to reflect that sense. And if you're still brewing small and curious about finding your own local ingredients he has tips for that as well. "Em Sauter is a cartoonist and visual beer educator who delights readers daily on her website Pints and Panels. She's worked in breweries and been an advocate for good good beer. This week she has a new book out – her second – called Hooray for Craft Beer! An Illustrated Guide to Beer, published by Brewers Publications. It's available where books are sold and you should go buy it. She takes us readers on a journey through beer history and styles and does so in an engaging way in a book that can be read straight through or just picked up for a few minutes here and there. While the style of the book and her work might be whimsical, the material is serious and factually accurate. She works hard to make sure what we're reading in the book not only serves entertainment purposes but also can be used as a study guide or learning tool. We'll talk about that, as well as her beer and life pairings, and we'll meander around the beer world, as we often do when we get together." -John HollThis Episode is sponsored by:Cigar City Brewing Co.
