Hello, and welcome to the BeerWise podcast, I'm your host, Mark DeNote, and I am the editor of Florida Beer News. This episode, I am joined by Brad Dahlhofer of B Nektar Meadery. In 2008, Brad and his wife Kerri had both been laid off from their jobs and were enjoying Brad's homemade mead when they decide to go all in on the idea of opening a craft meadery. Brad and Kerri's ideas continued to evolve and morph until B. Nektar's deep blue bottles were introducing new audiences to mead all over the Midwest and leapfogging a few states into my home state of Florida. Brad talks about the early days of B. Nektar, why he and Kerry decided to go all in on mead, the world's oldest, yet widely forgotten beverage. How he began to build a meadery and how much diligence and luck it took the team to get where they are today. You can listen to the podcast online here or on your favorite podcast platform. Before we get to our guest for this episode, I wanted to take a minute and thank those of you who carve out time to listen to this podcast every few weeks. It is a labor of love for me – and I get to have some great conversations with the fine people in the world of craft beer and beverages, but it is not my day job and it takes time to create this show. Recently, the BeerWise Podcast brought home a Gold Crushie – an award for “crushing it” in the field of craft beer marketing. According to the Craft Beer Marketing Awards organization, a gold Crushie is given “To award a 2023 CBMAS Gold Crushie, the judges' panel will be seeking entries that meet or exceed the defined category objectives by using strategy, creativity, and innovative production techniques to achieve a perceived, higher level of uniqueness.”I am extremely proud to have earned this award from those currently marketing in the beer industry, and excited to keep bringing you the words and stories of the amazing and awesome people in the beverage industry and beyond. Speaking of the great people in the beer industry and their stories… In this episode, I am joined by Ryan Sentz of Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. Ryan is the founder and soon-to-be-owner of Funky Buddha Brewery – a brewery that made a name by bringing intense flavors into beer that many could not believe. The beer that introduced many people to the brewery was Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, a beer that did not contain actual bacon, but made many wonder how such flavors were possible. From small beginnings, brewing beer in a lounge in Boca Raton to an expansion that brought the brewery into their current home, a 54,000 sq-ft facility with a 30-barrel brewhouse. In 2017, Constellation Brands, the international company who imports Corona and Modelo beer brands, had recently bought Ballast Point Brewing in San Diego and then news broke that Funky Buddha Brewery was being acquired as well. Funky Buddha Brewery remained entrenched in their local community with Ryan and his team still running the brewery with Constellation Brands as the brewery's owner. Fast forward to 2023 and Ryan and KC announce that they will be buying back Funky Buddha Brewery from Constellation Brands. Constellation Brands sells their craft breweries and exits the craft beer business, focusing on other brands of beer that they own. Ryan and KC re-enter the world of brewery ownership in one of the most competitive times in history for craft beer. This was one of the focuses of our conversation. Ryan was also nice enough to give me his hot take about other news that broke this week – the news that Sapporo, the Japanese brewer who owns San Francisco's Anchor Brewing, will be cutting back Anchor's distribution to California only and will be discontinuing Anchor's storied Christmas beer called Our Special Ale. I wanted his opinion on this topic as someone returning to brewery ownership after a hiatus. Here's our conversation. You can listen to the podcast online here or on your favorite podcast platform. Hello, and welcome to the BeerWise podcast, I'm your host, Mark DeNote, and I am the editor of Florida Beer News.In this episode, I am joined by Nile Zacherle, the President and Master Brewer of Mad Fritz Brewing Company in Saint Helena, California. I was introduced to Nile via one of his beers sent by a friend. The beer was so close to the line between wines and beers that I was intrigued, so I looked up the brewery. I was able to get some time with Nile to speak about Mad Fritz Brewing and the philosophy of “Origin Beer.” Mad Fritz and their beers, according to Nile, is a reflection of the beer's ingredients, not the recipe. In addition to making the beer, Mad Fritz malts their own barley and sources water from different wells and springs, often close to the brewery. Nile feels that the beer that emerges from this process is a reflection of the land it was grown on and the people who had a hand in making it. In this episode, I am joined by Reve Brewing Company owner and brewer Eric Luman. Eric is a veteran brewer of the Jacksonville craft beer scene. He began his career in the 1990s and has been brewing at various breweries around Jacksonville ever since. After a stint at Jacksonville Beach's Green Room Brewing Company, Eric decided to open his 'dream brewery' where he could focus specifically on brewing the styles of beer that make him happy. The exploration of those styles includes an expansive barrel-aging program that leads to almost weekly releases and adjunct ingredient combinations that are a bit unorthodox. Eric is candid about his goals with Reve Brewing and he talks with excitement about the future of the brewery. You can listen to the podcast online here or on your favorite podcast platform. This episode I am joined by Kelly Hanseth of Lumberyard Brewing Company and Beaver Street Brewery in Flagstaff, Arizona. Kelly's parents, Winnie and Evan Hanseth opened Beaver Street Brewery, Flagstaff's first craft brewpub, in 1994. Kelly was a young girl when the brewery opened and has grown up with the brewery as her family's business. When the city of Flagstaff was looking for ideas on what to do with their historic lumberyard, the Hanseth Family pitched the idea of turning the facility into a production brewery and restaurant. Lumberyard Brewing Company opened its doors in 2010, after the family remodeled and converted the facility. Kelly is now the Marketing Manager for both breweries and the Vice President of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild. We discuss growing up with a brewery in the family, marketing two breweries, converting a lumberyard into a production brewery, and more. This episode, I am joined by Aardwolf Brewing Company owner Preben Olsen and head brewer Michael Payne. Aardwolf Brewing has been a mainstay in the Jacksonville, Florida beer scene since 2013 when they opened as a beer bar and progressed to brewing their own beer. Preben and Michael discuss Aardwolf's origins and how they came to start brewing in an historic ice factory in the San Marco area of the city.Preben is also on the executive board of the Florida Brewers Guild, so I could not resist asking him about some of the initiatives that the guild has going on during the current legislative session. As a side note, the brewery is built very close to the train tracks, so there is periodic train noise. This episode, I am joined by Corey Adams of Southern Swells Brewing. Southern Swells just celebrated 6 years in the Jacksonville, Florida beer scene. Through it all, their beer lineup has been anchored by New England IPAs, especially their Karate In The Garage made with cryo Mosaic hops. Aside from that one particular beer, Southern Swells lineup changes continually. During this visit, Southern Swells still had Where the Citra Things Are, a session IPA made with every form of Citra hops available to purchase. It was a fortunate coincidence that I had my recorder handy during August's Florida Brewers Guild Conference, as both men were in attendance and had some time to sit down and talk about their journeys as brewers and record some of the names of brewers who have come and gone from Florida breweries. Ron and Madison talk about what it was like sharing information between breweries before email and the internet and other differences between their start in brewing and their current state of affairs.Ron Raike is the brewmaster at Playalinda Brewing Company and Madison Roane is the Vice President of Production at Florida Avenue Brewing Company. The two brewers have each been brewing beer professionally in the Sunshine State since the 1990s and have traveled worked with and worked for many other brewers and breweries in Florida History. Ron began his career brewing in the Orlando area, including a stint at what may have been the first airport brewery that brewed beer onsite at an airport - the Shipyard Brewpub in Orlando International Airport - and has transitioned between several breweries to his present position at Playalinda Brewing. Madison began brewing at McGuire's Brewpub in Destin and "followed a girl down to Tampa" and worked at Cigar City Brewing for years until transitioning to his current position at Florida Avenue Brewing in Wesley Chapel. The initial interview was Ron's idea - except this was before COVID, and it took several years to get both of these guys in the same room. The interview is worth a listen if only for the banter about hard seltzer and milkshake IPAs.You can listen to the podcast online here, or on your favorite podcast platform. In this episode, I am joined by Dave Doble of Tampa Bay Brewing Company. One of Tampa Bay's iconic and well-visited breweries, Tampa Bay Brewing Company is celebrating 25 years in July 2022. Visited by both Michael Jackson and Guy Fieri, many visitors know TBBC for its welcoming pubs in both Ybor City and Westchase. In the mid-1990s, the City of Tampa did not have many options for craft beer until John and Vicki Doble put their faith in their son Johnny's vision of opening a homebrew store called the Brew Shack. Johnny and his family grew that store into a brewpub and one of Tampa's first ‘destination' breweries. Once the pub opened, Johnny was the head brewer and Dave Doble left the family business to train as a pilot. I first met Ryan Dowdle in 2008 with a group of beer enthusiasts from RateBeer and BeerAdvocate in the Tampa Bay Area. Ryan has been through a lot in his journey into the beer industry, including the founding and building of Angry Chair Brewing in the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa. In this episode, our first back after a few month hiatus, we talk with Ryan about the future of Angry Chair Brewing, the brewery's reputation for big imperial stout, their award-winning pilsner and its following, as well as plans for the brewery's new home. I hope you enjoy the show. For more information on the BeerWise podcast and news from the beer industry, visit Florida Beer News, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
Join the BeerWise Podcast as we talk to Matt & Debbie McDonough, founders and head meadmakers at Pye Road Meadworks! Pye Road makes its home in Odessa, Florida - just a 15-minute jaunt from Tampa. Matt & Debbie talk about what drove them to follow their meadmaking passions to become commercial meadmakers and start a business in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will talk about mead's place in the wider community, Matt's use of "nontraditional" ingredients like fruit candy and marshmallows in his meads, where they see the meadery progressing after opening.
