Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!A “Deep Cut” is something that is recognisable or familiar to passionate fans but not usually to others.  As a special treat this week, we've delved into our collections to give you some deep cuts from our favourites – things like Queen, Bowie, Joe Cocker, Nick Cave and TISM. We think you'll love them,   In Rock News, Jeff delves into songs that turn 60 on 2025, looks at Sunday Lunch with Toyah and Robert Fripp, and looks at Yachtley Crew, a strange phenomenon from California.  Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die this week is Raw Power (1973) by Iggy and the Stooges. The lo-fi production on this highly influential album is the source of much tension between Bowie and Iggy, much of it not fair. We liked it!  Enjoy.  Playlist  Songs that turn 60 this year  Sunday Lunch with Robert and Toyah  Yachtley Crew Peter Cook as The BishopREM on Letterman References:  Raw Power, Iggy Pop, The Stooges, John Cale, Columbia Records, Sex Pistols, Johnny Marr & The Smiths, Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, MainMan, Tony DeFries, Sonny Boy Williamson, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, “Gimme Danger”, “Search and Destroy”, Iggy on Countdown, radio-friendly, Bowie, “The Man Who Sold the World”, Unplugged, Roxy Music, “For Your Pleasure”, Roxy live in Sydney – 2001 & 2011, The Police, “Bring on the Night”, Regatta de Blanc, white reggae, T.S. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Back in Season 1, we talked at length about Warren Zevon, one of the great American songwriters and one of our idols.  So, this year Warren Zevon has been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, along with Bad Company and Cyndi Lauper, and we thought that was a perfect excuse to close the loop on our coverage of his career.  It's all here – his later career, final album, appearances on Letterman.  We loved doing it, and we know that you will love listening to this one! Our “Album You Must Listen to Before You Die” is John Lennon's 1980 hit, “Imagine”.  As usual with Lennon's solo albums, it's more (and less) than it seems on the face of it, containing some of Lennon's best work along with some filler.  But, hey, it's a strong album and gave Roxy Music their worst-ever cover (FYI - “Jealous Guy”). We also venture into the world of ChatGPT to find out the Best Albums of 1972.  Fairly strong list – Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Lou Reed and..............................Wishbone Ash!  Who?    References – Globite Travel Bag, Warren Zevon, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, “The Wind”, Zach Starkey, The Who, Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, Cyndi Lauper, Jordon Zevon, CHAT GPT, 1972, Letterman, alcoholism, Rolling Stone magazine, Jann Wenner, Zevon Live in Australia, The Bridge Hotel, St Mary's Band Club, The Hilton Sydney, Little River Band, Linda Ronstadt, pleural mesothelioma, Enjoy Every Sandwich, “Sentimental Hygiene”, Neil Young, “Detox Mansion”, “Splendid Isolation”, “Heartache Spoken Here”, “Searching For a Heart”, “The Indifference of Heaven”, Life'll Kill Ya, My Ride's Here, “Hit Somebody”, Tony Levin, “Basket Case”, Carl Hiassen, “Bad Monkey”, “The Wind”, Crystal Zevon, Springsteen, “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, Dylan, Grammy Award,  “Keep Me in Your Heart", “Enjoy Every Sandwich”, Jackson Browne, Billy Bob Thornton, David Lindley and Ry Cooder, Pixies, Jorge Calderón  Playlist – Music from the episode Enjoy every sandwich The Wind

Jon Hamm headlines this dark comedy as Andy “Coop” Cooper, a Manhattan hedge‑fund hotshot who loses his marriage and his job in the same week—and decides the easiest rebound is robbing his smug, ultra‑rich neighbors. With Olivia Munn, Amanda Peet, and Corbin Bernsen, the series mixes Breaking Bad‑style bad decisions with the mid‑life angst of Californication and the snark of Bad Monkey. On the pod we'll unpack the first two episodes (“This Is What Happens” and “Deuce”), chart Coop's plunge from finance bro to watch‑stealing criminal, and debate whether the show's many colors—family drama, workplace betrayal, soap, and comedy. We'll also run through our pros/cons and ratings. Welcome to Today's Episode!

Ep 386: Exploring Faith Through Film, with Abby Olcese

Host Doug Stuart sits down with renowned film critic and author Abby Olcese to explore the intricate intersections of film, faith, and the liturgical calendar. Abby's new book, Film for All Seasons: Experiencing the Church Year at the Movies, forms the crux of this stimulating discussion, inviting listeners to see movies as more than mere entertainment but as avenues for spiritual and cultural introspection. The conversation begins with a delightful nod to the upcoming Paddington 3, encouraging listeners to revisit the first two charming installments. Abby then introduces Joyeux Noel, bringing a poignant cinematic portrayal of the World War I Christmas truce into the fold. This sets the stage for a deeper dive into the themes of Lent, where Abby explains her thoughtful selection of films like "Annihilation" and "Groundhog Day" to navigate through themes of mortality, repentance, and self-awareness.As Doug shares his fascination with liturgical rhythms and their underappreciation in American low church traditions, Abby enriches the dialogue with insights from her church background, reflecting influences from her time as an Episcopal ministry intern. They bond over the transformative power of films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Fast and Furious 6 in embodying ecclesiastical themes of diversity and unity, particularly resonating with the spirit of Pentecost.Exploring the evolving landscape of film criticism, Abby passionately argues for the importance of historical context in understanding movies. A robust discussion unfolds around how classic films like Top Gun and Night of the Hunter reflect societal attitudes of their times, paralleling her views on the lasting influence of well-crafted narratives. The show takes an intriguing turn as Doug and Abby delve into contemporary television's shift towards streaming, critiquing the impact of immediate performance metrics on long-form storytelling. They appreciate the quality and richness of limited series on platforms like Apple TV, using Blackbird and Bad Monkey as exemplary cases.Abby's narratives come full circle as she illustrates how films can serve as spiritual reflections for themes churches might miss, inspiring hope, love, and inclusivity. This episode is a treasure trove for listeners, whether cinephiles, faith-seekers, or both, offering unique perspectives on how movies like Paddington, The Last Jedi, and The Bishop's Wife can enrich one's spiritual journey.Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com ★ Support this podcast ★

Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware

This week we have our favourite Bostonian comedy actor joining us for lunch at mine, and what a treat it was! Mum was over the moon to have the ‘dazzlingly handsome' Rob in front of her, and - over an absolutely delish Nigel Slater peach and poached chicken salad - we heard all of his hilarious and heartwarming stories. He told us about meeting his wife at a summer camp 20 years ago, joining an olive oil club with his next door neighbour, working with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the horrendous food poisoning he got from a dodgy oyster, and we've found another Table Manners guest with a penchant for a cold water swim! Rob is not only a fabulous actor, but also a great cook apparently - we're coming round for a chicken noodle soup soon! Rob is currently staring in Bad Monkey which is available to stream now on Apple TV+. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
