Paul Goldsmith slams Aotearoa NZ Histories curriculum as 'lacking in balance'

New Zealand's first draft plan to teach our own history in schools has been slammed as "unbalanced" by the Opposition National Party. The long-awaited draft curriculum for what are called "Aotearoa New Zealand's Histories" is structured around just three "big ideas" - all about Māori and colonisation. They are:• "Māori history is the foundational and continuous history of Aotearoa New Zealand."• "Colonisation and its consequences have been central to our history for the past 200 years and continues to influence all aspects of Aotearoa NZ society."• "Aotearoa NZ's history has been shaped by the exercise and effects of power."The last idea is explained more fully as: "Individuals, groups and organisations have exerted and contested power in ways that have improved the lives of people and communities, and in ways that have led to damage, injustice and conflict."Ideologies and beliefs, from within and beyond Aotearoa NZ, underpin expressions of power and resistance and insisting on rights and identity."The draft document, released by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during a visit to the site of an 1846 battle between the British and Ngāpuhi at Ruapekapeka, is open for public consultation until May 31. All schools will be required to teach the subject from next year.Education Minister Chris Hipkins said each school would be expected to use their own local histories to inform the national themes, such as Ruapekapeka in Northland or "Māori and Chinese heritage" in Otago.Paul Goldsmith: "The proposed new history curriculum for schools is lacking in balance and needs revision." Photo / Mark Mitchell. But National's education spokesman Paul Goldsmith, who has written several books on NZ business and economic history, immediately attacked the first draft as "lacking in balance and needs revision"."The themes are mainly about identity and identity politics. That's part of the story – but there are other elements to New Zealand's history," he said."How did we make a living as a country? How, in such a short space of time, did we attain one of the highest living standards in the world?"Those basic questions don't feature prominently. They deserve much more than a passing reference."New Zealand is also one the oldest democracies in the world, with strong traditions of freedom and the rule of law – which is rare in this world. How did those institutions develop? Again, this is not a central theme," Goldsmith said."History is always contested. I encourage all New Zealanders to look at the proposals and submit on them."However Post Primary Teachers Association (PPTA) vice-president Chris Abercrombie, an Invercargill history teacher, said he was excited by the new curriculum and believed it had "got that balance" that was needed."Generally it's the stuff you'd think to see," he said. "Maybe [I expected] more about Māori history. There seems to be a lot about Pākehā involvement with Māori, maybe something more specific just about Māori history."He said the emphasis on local history would encourage teachers to find out their own local histories, but most teachers would need support."I have a degree in history, I have the skills and knowledge to do this, but not every teacher does," he said. "If you are expecting teachers in Years 1 to 10 to do it, they might not have the specialised knowledge so we have to make sure the support is there."Koro Nicholas of Tauranga Moana played the pūkāea at the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Ruapekapeka last month; students will now learn about the battle. Photo / Peter de Graaf.PPTA president Melanie Webber said she learnt very little NZ history at school and she was delighted to see that students would now learn about the Battle of Ruapekapeka, where one of her ancestors fought for the British."That's my history," she said. "The more we understand our history, the more we can understand our current society."Chris Abercrombie believes the curriculum has "got that balance" that is ne...

St. Georges Anglican Church, Gate Pa, sits on the site of the Battle of Gate Pā-Pukehinahina. Each year we offer free lectures to help people understand our history and how it shapes our present. This year we are offering two lectures on the evenings of February 2nd and February 9th at 7pm. Each talk will last about 2 hours. The first talk will be given by Archbishop Sir David Moxon on The Anglican Apology given in 2018 for the Disposal of the Mission Lands in Tauranga in 1867. Copies of the PowerPoint and the wording of the actual apology can be found on the parish websiteIn December 2018 the Anglican Church apologized to ngā iwi o Tauranga Moana, and Ngāi Tamarāwaho and Ngāti Tapu in particular, for the yielding of the Te Papa Mission Block to the New Zealand Government in 1867. This allowed the establishment of the Tauranga military settlement and covers all the land of the CBD up to Gate Pā. In the text of the apology it is acknowledged that in gifting the land, the Anglican church had ultimately failed in its moral obligations to mana whenua, "under intense and undue pressure from the Government of the day". In December 2019 the Anglican Church and the Otamataha Trust, representing Ngāi Tamarāwaho and Ngāti Tapu, signed an agreement on how that apology is to be acted out. On Sunday 2nd February Archbishop Sir David Moxon, the lead Anglican negotiator throughout this process, will talk about the events that are being apologised for, how the apology came about, and the overall hope for the future. Archbishop David is a retired Anglican archbishop. He was until June 2017, the Archbishop of Canterbury's Representative to the Holy See and Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome. He was previously the Bishop of Waikato in the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki, the archbishop of the New Zealand dioceses and one of the three primates of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. Archbishop David has been represented the Anglican Church in the negotiations around the apology.

Growing up immersed in te ao Moari with positive role models like his grandfather (who still surfs with him!) he understands the privilege combining his career, travelling and passion and also the responsibility that comes with it as he fly's the Maori flag proudly abroad. It's epic to see how whangaungatanga has played such a pivotal role in how Kehu see's the world and how that has allowed him to reciprocate. This is Kehu Butler - Grabbing life by the teeth!

Mark 6:14-29 is such a yuk story if we read it on its own. This story has echoes with previous stories and reminds us of the ongoing stories, including the stories in Tauranga Moana over the last week. They remind us of the story of St. George and the battles that happened here and Te Ranga in 1864. They remind me of the experiences I had with the rainbow members of TSSF in Australia and here in Aotearoa. But this is not a story on its own. It immediately contrasts with the stories of the feeding of the 5000+ and 4000+, stories of ridiculous generosity and hospitality, of deep compassion and welcome. Stories that lie at the heart of Eucharist.
