US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth says New Zealand is "freeloading" from the American military because of our low military spend. The remarks were made at an Asia-Pacific security conference in Singapore, attended by Defence Minister Chris Penk. The New Zealand Government has already announced plans to lift defence spending to around 2% of GDP over coming years — nearly double what we currently spend — but Hegseth says allies should really be aiming closer to 3.5%. That raises some big questions. At a time when New Zealanders are worried about the cost of living, hospitals and public services, why should defence move up the priority list? What are the risks if countries like New Zealand don't step up militarily? Defence Minister Chris Penk joins Tim Beveridge to discuss. Palantir is one of the most powerful and most mysterious companies in the world. The American tech giant, co-founded by MAGA supporter Peter Thiel, provides essential and controversial technology to (Western) militaries and police forces. The Dutch government is also a client. How desirable is that?Palantir, named after the magical seeing stones from Lord of the Rings, develops software that can link, analyze, and visualize enormous amounts of data. The company supplies armies, intelligence agencies, and police services: from the Ukrainian military to help hold back the Russians to the U.S. immigration enforcement agency ICE to track down migrants. The Netherlands has also been using Palantir technology for years, largely outside public view, according to research by Follow the Money. The Dutch military has worked with it since 2010; the National Police uses the software as the core of its data platform for combating serious crime. Large volumes of police data – from incident reports to telecom and location data – are made searchable and analyzable through a single system. Palantir itself states that it only provides a platform and does not process the data. This use raises fundamental questions. How transparent are these systems? Who oversees the algorithms? What safeguards exist against errors, bias, or wrongful suspicion? And what does it mean for our digital sovereignty?About the speakers:Richard Evans is a member of Palantir's Privacy & Civil Liberties Engineering Team (PCL), working at the intersection of policy, ethics, law and software engineering, and helping to ensure that Palantir's platforms are built and deployed in ways that uphold rights to privacy and other civil liberties. Based in London, Richard has worked across Palantir's UK defence, UK healthcare, and international public sector businesses since joining the company in 2017. Richard was previously lawyer in the New Zealand Government, focused on public and constitutional law.Ellen Mok is the founder of Digitale Doetank, a mission-driven advisory firm focused on digital sovereignty and the strategic use of (emerging) technologies. With a background in cyber strategy and national security, she previously worked at KPMG as Manager Cyber Strategy & Risk, where she helped establish the nation-state threats team, and at the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) as a Cyber Security Advisor and Researcher. Ellen holds two MSc degrees: one in Engineering & Policy Analysis (TU Delft) and another in Crisis & Security Management (Leiden University). She combines technical knowledge with political experience, being a candidate for the European Parliament with D66. Her focus areas include digital sovereignty, tech policy, and national security.Jochem de Groot is director of policy at NLdigital, the trade association of the Dutch digital sector. He wrote the book “Kolonisten van de Cloud” (Colonists of the Cloud), about the geopolitical role of tech companies. Former Prime Minister Helen Clark hasn't been slow in criticising our government's response to the attacks on Iran. She's not just criticising it - she's slamming it. Saying that it's “a disgrace” for not condemning Israel and the United States and, instead, criticising Iran's “indiscriminate” retaliatory attacks. Helen Clark says the Government knows full well that Israel and the US are breaking international law with these strikes and the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister should be saying so. She says the Government knows that negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear capability were underway and we should be ripping into Israel and the US for what they started on Saturday. But here's where I'm at. When I hear about people in Iran cheering and celebrating the demise of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who am I to criticise what's happened? Who am I to tell these people: “Oh no no, stop celebrating, it's not right what's happened. Israel and the US aren't playing by the rules.” Who am I to say that to those people? And who is Helen Clark to say that? This is the problem you get with people on the left side of the political spectrum, who seem to be incapable of seeing the bigger picture. Has Helen Clark and the opposition MPs lining up to criticise the Government forgotten about the death sentences handed out to some of the people involved in the recent mass protests? They want things done to the letter every time. But what if this brings a better life for the people of Iran? It's a big if. Because who knows whether this will be the end of the current regime running Iran or not? Regime change is easy to talk about but very difficult to do. Because it's not just the regime, it's who fills the vacuum afterwards. As we saw in Iraq. Yes, they got rid of Saddam Hussein, but then they got rid of the Iraqi army as well and that's when it really hit the fan with other extremists and terror groups all wanting a piece of the action. So, who knows how this is going to end up in the long term? But, when all is said and done, for me this is about the people of Iran. Which is why you're not going to hear me piling into our government the way Helen Clark is. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ah, Winston. Winston, Winston, Winston. He is the embodiment, as his namesake Winston Churchill famously said of Russia, of a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. The canny campaigner knew exactly what he was doing when agreeing to job share the Deputy Prime Minister role with ACT leader David Seymour during the Coalition Government's startup. He, Winston, would take the first 18 months, positioning himself as a senior statesman and Foreign Minister par excellence. And indeed, he has done a very good job as Foreign Minister. Then after that 18 months, he would step aside, making way for David Seymour, more importantly, making time to campaign right up to the next election, which is just a matter of months away. It's exactly what he's doing, stirring up xenophobia in the wake of the Government, or rather National and ACT, securing a Free Trade Agreement with India. A Foreign Minister that doesn't like foreigners, all of a sudden, just in the last year. As Toby Manhire says in his piece in The Spinoff, that Winston Peters and New Zealand First are opposing the Free Trade Agreement with India is no surprise. They also opposed the Free Trade Agreement with China 18 years ago. Then as now, says Manhire, Peters was Foreign Minister. Then as now, he said it was a bad deal for New Zealand. Then as now, he invoked an agree to disagree provision in the governing arrangement. So without New Zealand First support, National will need Labour to get the Free Trade Agreement across the line. Surely that should not be a problem – although you can't blame Chris Hipkins for playing hard to get and maximizing the political capital out of the situation. As far back as 2004 Helen Clark was leading trade delegations to India, although formal negotiations only began in earnest in 2010. It has taken a long, long time and much work from our trade delegates to get to this point. And Trade Minister Todd McClay says although it's inevitable that there will be politicking around the agreement, New Zealanders should understand that this is a very important, very big deal. “Number one, there was always going to be a bit of politics around this because it is a very big deal. It's 1.4 billion people. You know, I've seen a lot of speculation about tens and tens of thousands of Indians just having the absolute right to come to New Zealand. Mike, this is a trade deal, it's not an immigration deal. They do not have that ability. The New Zealand Government has reserved the right to change visa settings as we need to. And the final point would be, we have now a trade deal, one of the best India's done with anybody. We're 5 million people, they're 1.4 billion. This is a very good deal for New Zealand, and each party in Parliament's going to have to decide how they're going to make the case of where their support lies.” And on the point of Winston's claims that New Zealand will be overrun with Indian families, Todd McClay had this to say: TM: The debate at the moment has moved to students, whether or not we can cap the number of students. And actually, there has never been a cap on the number of students. We've never said we want them from Australia, we don't want them from the UK. And I don't think any future government would ever do that. It makes no sense to. But what we have always done is we have changed the visa settings, the conditions that you have to meet to be able to get a visa to come and study in New Zealand. If we jump back to when we were in government previously, there were a very large number of students in New Zealand. As a result of COVID, it went down, but the previous government and we have changed those settings to make sure that actually the number of places and students coming in matches our requirement and what we do. And we can continue to do that.” MH: But this is general, Todd, this is just immigration policy the way it's always been. Yes? TM: That's exactly right. Of course, we need to be aware of making sure the settings are right, that immigrants to New Zealand are coming to fill jobs and maximize opportunities. We don't need more Uber drivers. We need people who are able to come here and who are able to make most of the opportunities that New Zealand has to offer. But as Todd McClay says, if we feel things are getting out of whack, we can adjust settings accordingly. I mean, that happened when, remember all the hue and cry over far too many people arriving on the parent's visa, the parent category. All these people were arriving, didn't understand a word of English, were isolated, dependent on their families, some of whom we heard buggered off to Australia and left them here, isolated, alone, you know, it was a nightmare. So back in 2016, 2017 the number of people approved for residence fell by 8%, the decrease driven by parent category approvals, which fell 63% because the settings were getting out of whack. People realized there was a loophole and so it was plugged. It's election year, and I suppose you have to expect it. And those who have followed politics for a very, very long time, as Toby Manhire points out, have seen this happen before. This is what New Zealand First does. This is what appeals to their voters. From the outside looking in, the Free Trade Agreement with India is a very good deal for New Zealand. We are fundamentally a trading nation. From the outside looking in, this is Winston doing what Winston does, doing what he does best, coming up to an election with a sail full of hot air, pounding the populist drum of anti-immigration. Where do you stand on this one? Is the Free Trade Agreement with India a good deal or not? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're broke. The Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update shows we're still in debt and the debt is getting bigger. So, we're broke. Not enough money, everything's more expensive so it's off to the money lender before the bailiffs come in and sell everything. Sounds like a lot of households around me. Ideally, we'd be in a surplus - that's when we have more money than costs. But we aren't and the possibility of that happening has got further away. Make no mistake, deficit is bad, but surplus is only okay. That's how bad we are. And we're getting more and more in debt. The Government has a debt to GDP ratio of 41.8% and it's forecast to rise to over 46% before it starts going down. But lets put another lens on this: the New Zealand Government has posted a surplus 17 times since 1980. That's 17 times in 45 years. So the government has been broke 62% of the time since then. Being broke is our normal. And if I applied the surplus/deficit/debt ratio to my own finances then I've been broke most of my adult life. I mean, who hasn't had a debt-to-equity ratio of 95% in their lives? So if you look at it that way it's not so bad. And we're still in the right half of the indebted nations list. Everyone's broke. We're a bit naïve when we demand surpluses about just how hard it is to do. Listen to Steven Joyce on Heather's show yesterday: government books are hard to turn like a super tanker. As he said yesterday, it can take a decade. But some of us think a few public service cuts and cuts to benefits and we'd be tickety boo. But our fiscal crisis is far more fundamental than that. What we really need to do is make more money in the world, so we have more tax revenue, so we have more good stuff and less debt. So, what are you standing there listening to this for? Get to work.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Otago University's Robert Patman says it'll be pondering whether recognition will strengthen or weaken Hamas. But he says New Zealand should not dilly-dally. Although its movements have been approved, Australia is not the biggest fan, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying he would prefer it wasn't off Victoria's coast. NZ Contemporary China Research Centre Director Jason Young told Mike Hosking we have a complicated relationship. He says that while New Zealand does have a very important trading relationship with China, some of their actions in the Pacific go against our interests. Young says both Australia and New Zealand need to be able to manage those areas of difference, while maininting the positive aspects of the relationship. A common—and persuasive—argument against gun registration is that those who comply just put themselves on a list to have their firearms stolen by government officials in the future. As if to emphasize the point, the New Zealand government recently confiscated firearms licenses and the guns they covered from 62 people because of their political ideology. The situation is an important reminder that warnings against registering firearms are correct. But it also raises a red flag about governments' willingness to punish people for the ideas they believe.

I was going to start my programme today with some thoughts about the energy crisis, but something else has popped up. But I will share with you some fun facts: Did you know that New Zealand uses the same amount of electricity in 2024 as we did in 2004? Even though our economic activity and population have grown immensely in the past 20 years. What happened is that we, as consumers, became more efficient with our electricity use. We started using LEDs, we started saving, we started being more careful with our use. So the energy crunch is because we're not making as much electricity as we used to - even though we've been saving electricity ourselves  Meanwhile, did you also know that there are currently 22 renewable electricity projects fully consented but not started by the gentailers? So sure, blame the oil and gas exploration ban and that will result in an energy crunch in 10 years. But today's energy crisis is because the generators, who are also the retailers, have not ensured supply despite having it all available to them for years now. I've got more on that - but right now, I have to mention outgoing Treasury head Caralee McLiesh who's leaving for a job as Australia's auditor-general. In her exit interview she said the New Zealand Government needs to make more revenue. And the only way a Government makes more money is more taxes. She'd like to see a capital gains tax She's like to see a capital gains tax - and she says the Government needs to save more in the big expensive items. She mentions super. She'd like to see the age limit raised. Now, Caralee is not some crazy ideological lefty who wants to see the old and rich punished. She's pointing out the bleeding obvious. We are structurally bad. Economists have been saying this for generations. We don't tax enough. When we tax, we tax the wrong people. We don't spend enough and when we do, we do it cheap and too late and then complain when it all starts to fall apart. Faced with all this economic reality, the current Government decided to reduce its revenue to help some taxpayers and landlords. That's the exact opposite of what the problem needs. And then to make things worse, they've stopped spending. And we end up with a country where pregnant Mums can't have toast, Nelson can't get a new hospital building, we run ferries that should be in museums, we run out of power and water, and then we moan we're becoming a third world country and it's all Labour's fault. Someone has to point out the bleeding obvious now and then. I'm pretty sure nothing will happen on Caralee McLeish's advice because to change our structure would be too expensive politically. No turkey votes for Christmas. So before you moan again about how useless this country is, remember it's the country you voted for. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This special Ask the Experts webinar is part of Truth in Accounting's effort to reform governmental accounting standards in the United States. Currently, the 50 states are required by law to balance their budgets. But because governments use cash-based accounting, budgets that appear balanced are anything but balanced. With cash-based accounting, financial reports show expenses only when money is paid, not when debt or future expenses are incurred. This presents a flawed and inaccurate picture of governments' financial condition. Joanna Siekiera is an international lawyer and Doctor of Social Sciences in public policy sciences. She studied under a New Zealand Government scholarship at the Victoria University in Wellington. Her specialization is legal and political relations in the South Pacific, and the law of armed conflict. She is prodigious author, having written a book, co-authored three monographs, over 90 scientific publications in several languages, and over 40 legal analyses. In today’s podcast, we explore the legal aspects of Multi-Domain Operations and the protection of civilians, what we can learn from the on-going war in Ukraine as it pertains to U.S. policy and legal implications, and her concerns about security and policy in the Indo-Pacific. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our interview: Dr. Siekiera’s goal is to advise commanders on how to lawfully accomplish their military aims by understanding legal possibilities. Law is important, both as a discipline and within the context of society. Societal and cultural context help us to accurately analyze a conflict and understand the initial ideas and values that send countries to war, in order to respond appropriately and proportionally. There are no ethics in international law – one country’s system of values may not translate to another, creating differences in approaches to the law of armed conflict. Context and history can teach us why countries may see things differently and help to predict further actions. Dr. Siekiera uses the terms “East” and “West” not to divide but to make people aware that the two are not the same. Assuming that an adversary shares your cultural values is a dangerous and misleading bias — mirror-imaging — that threatens security. Alliances between nations are maintained when a shared identity is fostered. The legal aspects of Multi-Domain Operations and the protection of civilians are not being treated with the requisite importance. Although international laws exist to protect civilians in armed conflicts, a nation that does not hold the same values cannot be relied upon to comply with these otherwise widely accepted humanitarian laws. This must be recognized when planning all aspects of military operations. China – the biggest threat not only to western civilization but to NATO – slowly influences economic and societal changes in surrounding nations, quietly creating a military threat decades before it is recognized. Although NATO falls outside the Indo-Pacific region, China is still a threat through its

In the video sent to the BBC's Indonesian service, Mehrtens was surrounded by seven West Papua National Liberation Army fighters. They pledged to release the pilot if Papua was granted independence. A spokesperson for the group, Sebby Sambom, told RNZ Pacific they had kidnapped him because the New Zealand Government co-operates with the Indonesian military. The fighters appearing in the videos were armed with a mixture of assault rifles and bows and arrows.  Mehrtens is seen wearing a blue denim jacket, a matching hat and long khaki pants.  He read a prepared statement in which he repeated the rebels' demands.  Sambom said the group continues to demand negotiations from the New Zealand Government for Mr Mehrtens release. He says they would not harm the New Zealander.

Steve James joins me in today's episode – Steve is a former inspector of Police for Victoria and was Ministerial Adviser for Drug Policy for Australia and New Zealand Government for 11 years, who is currently enjoying retirement. He has a fascinating background, joining a cadet programme at age 15, following crime from the early days, moving onto drug expertise, explosives and organised crime. We have a thought-provoking debate on the pros and cons of gun law in Australia and the US, and we discuss the research behind mass shootings, and how potentially unreliable facts and figures can be manipulated to create misconceptions around mass shootings. A fascinating comparison of two very different geographies with some striking differences and similarities. A great episode for anyone interested in international gun law. The critically endangered Kākāpō is one of the more endearing species we have covered to date. This flightless parrot is native to Aotearoa New Zealand and was nearly extinct in the late 20th century. It is only through the commitment of the New Zealand Government and her people that the Kākāpō is still in existence. Today there are over 200 of these birds that are being cared for and guarded off Aotearoa New Zealand's coasts. This is just an amazing bird that surprised us at every turn. They truly deserves your love and another species you cant miss.  For one cup of "good" coffee a month you can support your favorite podcast on Patreon and give back to conservation. You hear a lot about the Great Resignation lately and that's not happening so much because people simply want more money. Studies show it's because they want to work in a culture that values them and thinks holistically about their happiness and well-being. This is where the F*ck Being Fine program for companies comes in. Through it, managers and their teams learn how to stay calm and grounded no matter what. It's designed to move participants to stop pretending everything's fine when it's not. And inspire them to upgrade how they respond to stressful situations.
