*This episode originally aired on July 23, 2023. Navigating the relentless pace of the modern world often means being bombarded by daily distractions, sleep deprived and perhaps a little stressed or anxious. It’s not easy. When it comes to looking for a moment of reflection and recalibration, it’s worthwhile to reexamine some of the philosophies and practices rooted in one of the world’s oldest cultures: Japan.  Jonathan Bastian talks with Pico Iyer, travel writer and author of “The Half Known Life: In Search of Paradise.” Born and raised in England, Iyer spent much of his younger adult life in New York and California before moving to Japan in 1992. From his first day there, Iyer recalls, he felt, “a mysterious sense of recognition … as soon as I spent my first morning in Japan walking around near the airport in Tokyo — not, obviously, an interesting or romantic place — I felt, ‘I know this place and this place knows me.’” More: In search of paradise — and why travel writer Pico Iyer says it may be within Since then, Iyer has discovered that the more time he spends there, the better. Perhaps that’s because, at 66, he’s aged into a society in which being “older” is also culturally revered and embraced.  “Maybe the real reason I wanted to move was [because] it's a very mature, seasoned old society. For me, going to Japan was like seeking out an elder,” Iyer says. “I've reached the age when I really want to learn how to live and what it all means, and I felt that Japan could offer that as well as anywhere.” The Eastern philosophy that dominates Japanese cultural traditions centers itself on a strong sense of community. In contrast to the US, where individualism is revered, Japanese society is generally collectivistic, with people often viewing themselves and others as members of cooperative groups or units. Accordingly, older members of Japanese society are respected for their wisdom and maturity.   More: The external and internal pilgrimage: Author Pico Iyer on the purpose of journeying in modern times Iyer also discusses the concept of impermanence, a tenet of Buddhist philosophy that Iyer says is “deeply woven into every fabric” of Japanese society.   “Every April, everyone races out to see the cherry blossoms, precisely because they last for only ten days. And if they were to last, even for a month, there'd be none of the excitement and none of the sense of grabbing the moment,” he says. “[It’s a] Japanese truth, which is a universal truth: Nothing lasts forever.”  Pico Iyer, pictured here, explains that in Japanese culture, “the fact that nothing lasts is a reason that everything matters, every moment matters, and one can't take anything for granted.” Photo courtesy of Derek Shapton.  More: Spiritual writer Pico Iyer says now is the time confront who we really are Social and medical anthropologist Iza Kavedžija has done extensive research and fieldwork with two distinct groups of people in the Kansai region of Japan. Her primary focus, and the subject of her book “Making Meaningful Lives: Tales from an Aging Japan,” has been examining how older members of Japanese society are cared for by the community and by one another.  In Osaka, Kavedžija observed that in order to maintain social links and ties, older people have created a social network — a sort of social safety net that they need in order to live well. Surprisingly, it's Japan's older generation that’s “driving societal changes,” explains Kavedžija. “We don't tend to think of older people as those who are driving the processes of social change and crafting new social relations, but that's exactly what they were doing.” Another practice Kavedžija observed in her research, and which in recent years has gained international traction as a lifestyle philosophy, is that of ikigai, which translates to “reason for being.” “Ikigai can sometimes be quite a modest pursuit, some small hobby or small set of interests, or even a form of attention,” explains Kavedžija.  “Being able to observe the birds in the garden through the window, and being able to do that every day, and that simply gets you out of bed, can be seen as a form of ikigai. … It's looking out for those small things in life that kind of get you going.” Kavedžija says Japanese philosophy is very much guided by the principles of humility, gratitude, and community. What struck her, particularly in her research with the elderly, was the cultivation of broad networks of care.  “Even among fairly old people in their 80s and 90s, they themselves were not only just recipients of care, but were very caring and involved in numerous caring relationships, which would scaffold other people's lives,” she says. While researching Japanese society, Iza Kavedžija, pictured here, observed that, “when disposing of things, people would often kind of thank things for their service, or try to find a good home for an item, passing it on to someone who needs it. And this way of being in the world is quite helpful in a society where there's a lot of objects, and there's a lot of consumerism.” Delve deeper into life, philosophy, and what makes us human by joining the Life Examined discussion group on Facebook.

Every April the Wisconsin DNR releases a questionnaire to the public to ask for public input regarding conservation-related issues that are on the radar looking towards the future. The in-person Spring Hearings are then held by each district's Conservation Congress, where citizens can ask questions, and make their opinions known about issues that matter to them. It's an incredible opportunity for regular people like you and I to provide input, and an even better opportunity for outdoorsmen and conservationists to help further initiatives towards positive change. Some of the questions also make you think pretty hard. This week, Pierce sits down with Wisconsin BHA Board member, Alec Bekkers, to discuss a few of the Hearing questions that stuck out to them the most, and more importantly, what some of them mean for conservation, public land access, and hunter/angler rights and opportunities. The guys cover a little bit of everything including: trout regulations, wake boats, panfish limits, technology in the outdoors, houndsmen advocacy, and most importantly, that outdoorsmen need to do a better job of showing up, making their voices heard, and fighting for hunter rights. Every April, organizations across the country take the time to celebrate and thank their volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of many Long-term Care Ombudsman Programs (LTCOP). With the help of volunteers, the Ombudsman program can have a regular presence in facilities and stay in touch with residents. Volunteers lend their time, talent, and voice to make a difference in their communities and the LTCOP could not be its best without the volunteers who help carry out the mission of advocating for long-term care residents. In this episode, the National Ombudsman Resource Center (NORC) talks to a certified volunteer from New Jersey about her experience and dedicated advocacy. The Administration for Community Living (ACL) also joins to honor the over 4,000 people who serve as Long-Term Care Ombudsman volunteers. These specially trained volunteers visit nursing homes and residential care communities to advocate with and for the residents living there. By visiting on a regular basis, volunteers get to know residents and gain their trust to better assist them in resolving issues or complaints to help ensure they receive quality long-term care. Naturally, the Percy family turn up too, as the Earls of Northumberland play a role in Shakespeare's retelling of the Wars of the Roses, just as they did in reality. If you enjoyed this episode, there are two more Shakespearean podcasts to enjoy - look for episode 8 and episode 33 in our podcast feed!(And please do leave a positive review or five-star rating on your podcast platform. Companies who've developed strong Environment Social Governance (ESG) standards are seeing better profitability, stronger financial performance, and happier employees. But this transformation isn't just about transforming our economies, operating models, and supply chains, it is about transforming lives by putting people and trust at the heart of decisions we anchor in sustainable development. When Can, Care, and Do come together, something interesting happens: trust is formed. Across regions, cultures, and languages, trust is a common currency - the connective tissue that makes all positive action possible. In an exclusive Earth Day Special, Jim Massey lays out the case for why all progress in sustainability depends on trust - the basis of successful selves, teams, and systems. In a time when many are rapidly losing trust in our institutions – whether in government, society, or finance – it's more critical than ever that leaders cultivate their ability to build trust.  Episode 76 is the 3rd Earth Month feature celebrating provocative themes and people in sustainability, supply chain innovation, and circularity. Jim Massey is a Chief Sustainability Officer, Global ESG Expert, and former VP of ESG Sustainability, Ethics, and Compliance at AstraZeneca.  In our chat, Jim unpacks wisdom from Trust in Action, including: * where will leaders have the greatest impact * what is the “breakthrough” proven trust model for sparking action * how can folks listening drive positive change in their organization * what are some of the actionable repeatable approaches for working with teams to tackle today's toughest problems  * what words of wisdom can you give others leading or have the ambition to lead in sustainability? This year, we rally behind the Earth Day theme “Invest In Our Planet”, which highlights the importance of dedicating our time, resources, and energy to solving climate change and other environmental + social issues. Our world needs transformation. Solving the environmental crisis calls for bold, creative, and innovative solutions and leadership. This will require action at all levels, from business and investment to city and national government. Investing in our planet is necessary to protect it and the best way to pave a path towards a prosperous future. When we Invest In Our Planet together, we are supporting healthy, happy, and thriving communities worldwide. To learn more about Jim Massey and Trust in Action, visit https://www.jimmassey.co/

What Podcasting Can Learn From Baseball

I grew up a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan.  Every April, we thought, "this could be the year."  Until it wasn't.  But in honor of what used to be our national pasttime, today I'm going to tell you what podcasting and baseball have in common. When you start your show, it's April.   You've got big dreams.   You're going to be the next Serial, or the next Joe Rogan.  You're going to get millions of downloads, and sell enough ads to quit your job and buy your own private island.  Hope springs eternal, right? Then you get into the season, and you realize that this is a LOT harder that it looks - and sounds.   You need to be consistent.  And you need to spend a lot more time practicing - or prepping - than you do actually playing (or recording).   And even if you're a knock-it-out-of-the-park type player, you can't do it without teammates.  That could be cohosts, guest, virtual assistants or VAs, editors, and more.   It sure is fun to start, but it's a grind.    And while everyone wants to win - would you be happy with a .500 record? Making the playoffs? Winning the pennant?  What does that mean for you in terms of downloads and either sales leads or ad revenue? Here's one more comparison.   Baseball interest has plummeted in recent years.  Why? As our attention spans wane, the game has gotten slower.   Time between balls in play has gone from 3 to 4 minutes, which added up over a whole game is a lot.  And the longer your content, the more compelling it needs to be.   News flash: you're not Sarah Koenig or Joe Rogan with a full staff behind you.   Chances are, your show can be more compelling if you keep it under 30 minutes.  And lose the fluff.  If it doesn't interest your audience, leave it on the cutting room floor. If you follow baseball, you'll know this year has brought - forgive the pun - a seismic....shift.    For reasons too long to list here, baseball has gotten away from putting the ball in play, and just going for the home run.  New rules have gone into place for the 2023 season to encourage more singles, doubles, triples, and steals - to keep the action and momentum going. Similarly, podcasting has swung for the fences - look at the hundreds of millions of dollars Spotify and others have thrown around over the last few years.  It wasn't sustainable.   And now, like many other industries, the podcasting world has started to contract - with cuts at many bloated companies.   As Vanity Fair put it, "The Dumb Money is Gone."  Or, as Steve Goldstein of Amplifi Media says, "Belt Tightening will be good for podcasting." More and more folks are listening to podcasts.  After a brief dip in 2021-2022 as we came out of the pandemic, podcast consumption has once again grown this year, to another all time high, according to Edison Research's Annual Infinite Dial Survey.  Four out of 10 Americans age 12-54 have listened to a podcast this week, and weekly podcast listeners average 9 shows per week.  Chances are, your show is not the next Serial, Smartless, or Stuff You Should Know.   Those shows are home runs.  Your show might be a single, double, or triple.  Heck, maybe it's a steal.  Baseball is learning that those plays are key to keeping the game exciting.   And that's why your show is important to podcasting.    If you have any questions at all about podcasting, you can find me online at JAGinDetroit.com, where I have a new guide to all the equipment you'll need to get started: https://jagindetroit.com/podcast-equipment-recommendations/

On the last episode, Eric and I talked through some tender and candid reflections on what would've been our son Jackson's 25th birthday. Every April 12th without him here is painful (we have endured 9 of them now), but as we shared on that episode, his 25th birthday felt especially hard for me. So as the date on the calendar was approaching, I began working on a social media post to share, not just to express my own thoughts, sorrow, and grief, but truly in hopes of helping others who may be facing difficulties of their own. On today's episode, I thought that it might be helpful to just read the post that I wrote, providing a sort of resource for you. Something that can help you when you face "your April 12th", whatever that may be. So, I invite you to listen today and soak in these truths, but I also encourage you to come back and listen again and again...whenever you need hope. When you feel alone. When God feels distant. It's been another funny 24 hours on social media as Twitter users celebrated ‘Ed Balls Day'   Every April 28th, we remember the day Ed Balls, star of Strictly Come Dancing and former politician, sent a tweet containing simply his name.   He'd been searching for news articles about himself and inadvertently typed his name into the ‘Tweet' box and sent it.   As we now know - if you make an embarrassing blunder, the internet never forgets.   Have a look at hashtag EdBallsDay.     Good news for Facebook - its user numbers are growing again after a small decline at the end of last year.   Asian nations are fuelling much of the growth but recent restrictions imposed by Russia mean numbers in Europe have taken a significant dent.   And while the numbers go up, the amount of money Facebook makes is slightly down.   And after the Peloton bike, the next trend in personal fitness looks like being the high tech fitness mirror.   They cost about a thousand pounds and involve working out while data and coaching tips and advice are overlayed on top of the mirror image.   Experts are divided on whether they'll catch on.

This year's observance, the 41st annual commemoration, takes place April 24-30, 2022 with the theme: "Rights, access, equity for all victims" by "helping victims find their justice". Despite the benefits unmanned vessels might provide, experts have questions about what the Navy wants them to do: Do they want vessels that can operate autonomously deep into the sea for weeks on end? Do they simply want vessels that can fire missiles without risking lives? Do they want a large number of ships that can be built, maintained and operated at a lower price?  Sen. Dianne Feinstein defended her service representing California in the Senate in the wake of a report that colleagues of hers are concerned about her ability to continue serving, and she said she does not plan to step down before the end of her term, which runs through 2024. Every April 15, Major League Baseball goes to great lengths to honor Jackie Robinson on the anniversary of the day, now 75 years ago, when he broke the sport's color barrier. On that day, every player wears his iconic No. 42, which is otherwise retired across the majors. Honoring Robinson is a year-round endeavor, too, for MLB and the country at large. In 1987, baseball renamed its rookie of the year awards in his honor. He has been on postage stamps and a commemorative silver dollar. His bust is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. His uniform number became the title of a movie about his life. Posthumously, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Congressional Gold Medal.   His legacy, in other words, is wide-ranging and everlasting. We're honored to have Walter Hoeijmakers as our guest on today's show. Walter is the key creative force behind what is debatably the most important annual event in extreme music: the legendary Roadburn Festival. Every April since its inception in 1999 until the global pandemic shifted the landscape, Roadburn has hosted everything from the best contemporary heavy artists to once in a lifetime performances from living legends such as Hawkwind, Goblin and GISM. Over the years, the fest has become an integral communal event and pollination site for thousands of metalheads, punks, and heavy music lovers the world over. After the necessary cancellation of Roadburn's 2020 installment, they are back this year with Roadburn Redux; a weekend of special livestream events curated with the love and attention to detail the festival is known for. We caught up with Walter to talk about Roadburn Redux as well as his beginnings, some of the wild and unique Roadburn moments throughout the years, and the ever increasing importance of community. 4.11.21 - Day 1/13 of the White Mirror Wavespell * Planetary Moon 8 It's a remarkable moment, the eve of the Natural Time year's 'Galactic Return.' Every April 12th, or Planetary Moon 9, is 260 days after the start of the Mayan year. July 26, 2020 was Blue Lunar Storm and so our year is named - it holds the energy of that day for its entirety. April 12, 2021 is also Blue Lunar Storm, so it's both the birth of something that was conceived on that first day, as well as a microcosmic augury for us to discern what this surrounding year is about for us personally and collectively. I thought it was helpful to be reminded that Blue Lunar Storm lives within the White Mirror wavespell. That gives an additional perspective on why this year has been both challenging and chaotic, relentlessly churning and forcing us to confront both our weaknesses and strengths. It's situated in the time of sacrifice. Sacrifice is a sacred offering, but it also feels like heartbreak and loss. This White Mirror wavespell will at minimum remind us of the truth that when things are torn away from our grasp, we can open ourselves more easily to the god force.

Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business

Every April, people from across North America and around the world flock to America’s largest craft brewing industry gathering: the Craft Brewers Conference. Sharing education, knowledge and ideas, the trade show is led by the top minds in the world of beer and business. For many brewers and beer professionals, this is an annual pilgrimage to not only consume information but to sample great beers. It’s evident when you look at the wealth of resources for brewers to come out of the States how passionate Americans are over craft beer. The CBC is just one example, but you don't have to look far to see evidence elsewhere. One such forum aimed at promoting and protecting American craft brewers is none other than the CBC's hosts, the Brewers Association. The Brewers Association is a not-for-profit trade association comprised of over 5,400 brewers members, 46,000 American Homebrewers Association members, and allied trade, beer wholesalers, retailers and other associate members. However, the Brewers Association isn’t just a resource for America alone. Brewers and beer professionals from other countries and continents, including the UK & Europe, are able to join and enjoy member benefits. These include articles, access to seminars online, education publications, and their magazine, The New Brewer. How America will fare during the current climate is anyone’s guess, especially without getting too political. However, the land of the home and brave and its beer professionals will have to band together more than ever to see its 8000+ breweries come through the other side. The landscape of US craft beer has been changing of late anyway. The keynote talk at the CBC Online from Bart Watson entitled The State of the Craft Brewing Industry, highlights many of the changes. However, it will no doubt will look very different in the months and years that lay ahead as it picks up the pieces of their broken economy. So, in some ways, it’s hard to publish today’s episode - recorded at BrewLDN in February this year - and discuss with Lotte Peplow what makes American craft beer and their brewers great and the reverence for many beer drinkers across the world. Lotte Peplow, is the Brewers Association American Craft Beer Ambassador for Europe. She’s a certified Cicerone®, Beer Sommelier, beer judge, beer writer, homebrewer, beer & food pairer! As you can tell, she’s really into beer…! It was a privilege to sit across a table with her backstage at BrewLDN and share some fresh beers to come from the States, to talk about American craft beer, why independence is so important, equality in the industry, and a wide range of other topics that - at the time of recording - seemed like the most important thing. Hard to believe now as our focus is redefined on merely surviving with our health, our business, and our industry intact. Any events that Lotte and I discuss on the show have been cancelled up until September. After that, who knows what might happen… both with the immediate events as hosted by the Brewers Association and the future of American craft beer.

"Few years ago, I was easing down the highway about 70 miles an hour on in their state and came into a little construction zone and the sign clearly said the speed limit is now 45. Well, I didn't see anybody constructing anything. I just saw some warning signs. So I continued my merry little way at 70 miles an hour. Well, it wasn't long until I was reminded that, you know, what render to Caesar what Caesar's." Family Discussions: Which things for your money do you enjoy giving the most? Which forms of giving and spending give God the most joy? Why is important to render under Caesar what is Caesar's with a positive attitude? Transcription: 00:14          It's no wonder they called him Christ. The astonishing teacher. And he blew them out of the water then when he taught. And he blows us out of the water today. Listen to the wisdom of this passage today in Mark chapter 12 and starting with verse 14. It says this, "and they came to him and said to him, teacher, we know that you're truthful and defer to no one for you are not partial in any way, but you teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay tax, a poll tax to Caesar or not? Shall we pay or shall we not pay? But Jesus, knowing their hypocrisy said to them, why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and look at it. They brought one and he said to them, whose likeness is on that coin? And they said, Caesars. And Jesus said to them, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are gods. And they were amazed at him."   01:13          Few years ago, I was easing down the highway about 70 miles an hour on in their state and came into a little construction zone and the sign clearly said the speed limit is now 45. Well, I didn't see anybody constructing anything. I just saw some warning signs. So I continued my merry little way at 70 miles an hour. Well, it wasn't long until I was reminded that, you know, what render to Caesar what Caesar's. The red lights were flashing my rear view mirror. Probably the worst site in the whole wide world. I've seen him a couple of times more than I wish I could have, but, I was reminded and I ended up paying some kind of awful fine for speeding in a work zone even though nobody was there working render under Caesar what did the Caesar's.   01:57          You know, it's no wonder that R rated movies have an age limitation and really and truly, probably very few if any of them are good for any age. But for sure, not at a young age. You know, you're not supposed to drink alcohol til you're 21. Listen to the law. I love working in my Bible study with my high school seniors that are grappling with issues like this. And I love the guys that are really following God and are not just not drinking because it's age 21 and under, but because they don't want to ruin their witness to the school or to take the chance of ever becoming an alcoholic. But nevertheless, there's the law. Every April 15th, you know, we get an opportunity to support our government. And you know what? I can't tell you that I'm in favor of a lot of the things that our government does with our money, but you know what? It's the law. And so on April 15th, we pay our taxes, every penny of them. Don't we? Because it's the law of the land. So we rent under Caesar's what is Caesar's.   03:02          But I want to tell you something really important today. There's a higher law. You know, Adolf Eichmann was tried after the, you know, the Holocaust in World War II. He was one of the officers in Germany, one of the highest officers there responsible for killing millions of Jews. And in his trial, he said in his own defense, he said, I have obeyed the law and the flag. So he was obeying Hitler and the Nazi flag. But there was a higher law. It was a moral law. It was a law of God that you don't kill. And so he disobeyed the higher law. Unfortunately, he was convicted of his crime.   03:36          So it is America in the world today. You know, the law says that you can take a little baby, a precious little baby, you know, no matter what size or what age they are inside of your womb. And you can take that baby's life away. Well, it's the law of this land, but there's a higher law. The higher law says that every life is valuable. Every life is precious. Even the life of an unborn child. There's a lot of laws in this country, and you know what? We're gonna pay our taxes and we're gonna, you know, obey the laws of the land. Except when there's a higher law. And that law is the law of God. It's the highest law of all.   04:17          So here's the questions for today. You know, money goes to the government. Money goes to God's ministries on earth. Money goes to our families needs and money goes to our families wants. But which of these things for your money do you enjoy giving the most? And then which forms of giving and spending give God the most joy? And I hope you've got some things in your life and in your homes that really give you joy. That you give sacrificially to. The third question is, why is important to render under Caesar what is Caesar's with a positive attitude? Whew. Here's the lifeline. You know, in a family, you know, dad has his God given authority. In a family, mom has her God given authority. And you know what? If you're a teenager living in a home, you'll have yours in due time. But when you render under Caesar, it brings unity and it brings harmony to the family.

Today, I picked up the news about the English education in Japan. If you think raising kids there or currently have kids, you must listen it. Every April for sixth-graders and third-year junior high school students is aimed at measuring students' basic knowledge of mathematics, Japanese and their ability to apply those skills to solve complex problems. Starting this year, the ministry included English in the assessment for junior high school students, in line with the government's plan to improve students' abilities in the language. The test results were disclosed last Wednesday. The Japan Times reported. The English test measures students' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The average score of 68.3 percent in the listening section and 56.2 percent in the reading section. But they scored only 46.4 percent in writing and 30.8 percent in speaking. When I was a third-year junior high in 2008, I had this test time first time in my life. Teacher told us not to study in advance. They explained that it doesn't affect our score in the school. I was in the public school then, and I was studying at the clam school after school. Neither of them have a writing nor speaking test. According to the Japan Times, In the speaking section, many students struggled with improvised speech on randomly chosen topics. In the writing section, many students had difficulty using their vocabulary and grammar skills or struggled with writing coherently, the results showed. For example, only 1.9 percent of students answered correctly when they were asked which of two pictographs best symbolizes a school and explain their decision in 25 or more words. “The test results confirmed that students have poor communication skills — in both writing and in conversation. … And we take it as reaffirmation of what has been long deemed a problem in English teaching in Japanese schools,” said Takeshi Hayashi, an official in charge at the education ministry's National Institute for Educational Policy Research. But Hayashi has high hopes that such problems will be addressed with the introduction of a new curriculum for junior high schools beginning in 2021 in which more focus will be put on speaking and writing. “Previously, English was only taught as an official subject to grades five and six but from 2020 this will extend to include third and fourth grade classes for primary school, as well.” Liam Carrigan wrote in the Gaijin Pot. “The new textbooks are titled We Can (for grades five and six) and Let's Try (for grades three and four). I think they are definitely a step up from the previous textbooks called Hi Friends. The activities are simpler, easier to explain to the students without having to revert to Japanese and designed around starting with single word responses. The books then build out to answering in full sentences before finally being able to converse and exchange questions and answers using their own vocabulary inputs. What is the phrases of these text books? Look into the Let's try. According to the bilingual Kokomo eigo.com For the third grade students, they learn such a phrase like: How are you? How many? I like blue. What do you like? What's this? Grade four students learn such a phrase like: Let's play soccer! I like Monday. What time is it? Do you have a pen? What do you want? These are used in daily conversation. Hopefully the new curriculum change Japan's English education better. The government should invest the money for the employment. As the result of the test showed, some of the school didn't have the writing and speaking test because of lack of employment. More native teacher needed after changing the curriculum, Japanese English teacher's English are hard to listen.

Every April the National Hockey League enters its second season, the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It is one of the most exciting times in sports. But unlike Major League Baseball, the National Football League or the National Basketball Association, hockey’s playoff season is actually named after a person, Frederick Arthur Stanley. But why? Who was the man who later became known as “Lord Stanley”? Why is the trophy awarded to the champion team in the NHL named the “Stanley Cup”?  Author Kevin Shea, who, to date, has written 17 books about hockey including, “Lord Stanley, The Man Behind the Cup,” (he co-authored this book with John Jason Wilson) returns to Sports’ Forgotten Heroes for an in-depth conversation about Lord Stanley and Stanley’s introduction to the game; and how he was convinced to donate a sterling silver cup to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. Hint: Stanley’s daughter, the Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy, played a big role. Lord Stanley, who had never played hockey and saw only a few games, was in Canada working as its Governor General at the request of Queen Victoria. Stanley’s children took a liking to the sport and from there the Stanley Cup came about. Not only will we talk about the origin of the Stanley Cup, but we’ll dive in deep to so much more including who Frederick Arthur Stanley was and the history of hockey’s championship trophy. Seoul, South Korea-Hiking Guide For Namsan-Guardian Mountain

East Asia is such a super friendly place for foreigners with efficient subway or MRT lines throughout all major cities including Seoul, South Korea. All stations have English signs and all stops are announced in English. Namsan mountain is the most well-known of the four guardian mountains of Seoul with the famous landmark, Seoul N Tower topping the 262m peak. It’s not a challenging or particularly strenuous hike but it’s a nice break from the chaotic megalopolis below. It’s also a great way to join locals in their everyday activities and experience the fitness and hiking culture of the city. If you start your hike from the gondola station it’s extremely easy to find your way with signs in English everywhere. This is more like a vigorous walk in a park than a mountain hike. No rough trails to deal with. Stairs everywhere and there’s even rubberized sections of the trail to lessen the impact of hiking on a hard surface. When it comes to activities like this Koreans really know how to makes things comfortable. This may look like a road but it’s pedestrian only! On the way you’ll see sites you can check out like Waryongmyo, a Buddhist/Daoist/Shamanist Shrine dedicated to Zhuge Liang, a Chinese statesman and general who lived from 181-234 AD. As you meander up the trail you’ll start to get views of Seoul and the surrounding mountains. It’s a wonderful way to appreciated the city where half the population of the country lives. It’s easy to enjoy the serene atmosphere of the walk up Namsan. You’ll also have views of N Seoul Tower. The N stands for Namsan, nature and New look from a 2005 15 billion won remodelling project. Namsan is a popular place for Seoulites to visit on the weekend with many spots available for picnics and other outdoor activities. Namsan is considered Seoul’s principal park. It averages 23,000 visits a day. Every April a Cherry blossom festival takes place across Seoul with the longest avenue of Cherry trees anywhere in the city at Namsan mountain. There was a haze and clouds over the surrounding mountains of Seoul on the day I visited Namsan. There are 37 mountains in the greater Seoul area, many easily accessed by subway or bus. One of the most fascinating things I saw along the hike was Sukhojung, an archery field that dates back to 1630, still in operation today. Archery had played a prominent role in the defence of the country, particularly on Namsan mountain, one of the sites of The Fortress Wall of Seoul, the shield that protected the city from invaders. This outdoor gym was a sign I was getting closer to the direct stairs to the top of the mountain. As you get higher each step has a built in rubber cushion making it a little easier on the knees and joints. Koreans are real outdoor enthusiasts that also appreciate making the activity comfortable and convenient with covered rest areas, washrooms, and these wonderfully comfortable stairs. As I was on final approach to the top, with the tower now in direct sight the views opened up to show even though this is one of the most densely populated places in the world there are still large visible green spaces in greater Seoul. Follow Namsan’s portion of the Fortress Wall of Seoul, first constructed in 1396, and you’ll understand the strategic importance of the four guardian mountains and this wall that protected the city during the Joeson Dynasty. When I reached the top I was just in time for the patrolling and lighting ceremony reenactment of Namsan Bongsudae. There were 5 Bondsudae stations on Namsan during the Joeson Dynasty used to communicate political and military information to the king with beacons. Bongsu is the combination of the words bong, meaning torchlight, and su, meaning smoke. At the peak of the Joeson Dynasty there were 673 beacons located throughout the Korean peninsula. This Bongsudae on Namsan was reconstructed in 1993. It was an extremely warm and humid day so these sprinklers were a relief from the heat for everyone. More views directly under N Seoul Tower, which has been open to the public and showcasing views of the city and surrounding area since 1980. These locks underneath the tower are symbols of love from the countless dates that have taken place here over time. You can check out how many different languages love messages are written in, on these symbols of a forever lasting love. Or leave your own, but it looks like all the good views are gone. I like everyday activities, like cycling, hiking or walking in an urban area I’m visiting. The feeling of participating in the same daily workout or exercise that locals enjoy, like Namsan Mountain, makes me feel more engaged and like I’m actually living in the place rather than just being a sightseer or tourist. Next time you’re in Seoul, South Korea try hiking one of the mountains for a break from the busy city, a sense of touching everyday life, maybe even a little bit of history, and some pretty amazing views.

April 24, 1915 - Armenian Genocide

Human Rights a Day

Genocide strikes Armenian people.During World War I, the Ottoman Empire (most of that area is now Turkey) worried about a Russian invasion. Ottoman Turks felt threatened by Russia’s support for Ottoman Armenians’ desire for an independent state. They decided to round up, then execute or deport, all of the estimated two million Armenians within their borders. The slaughter began on April 24, 1915. Many Armenians died during forced marches into the deserts of what are now Iraq and Syria. Most of the killings and deportations took place between 1915 and 1917, but reports indicate they continued until 1923. How many were actually killed, and whether the events constituted “genocide,” remain topics of debate. Turkey acknowledges 300,000 dead, but refuses to call it systematic killing or genocide, arguing that not just Armenians were targeted. Armenians themselves say they lost 1.5 million people, and remain horrified that the debate over whether it was genocide continues. After years of debate in Canada, Members of Parliament passed a resolution on April 21, 2004 which states, "That this House acknowledges the Armenian genocide of 1915 and condemns this act as a crime against humanity.” Every April 24th, Armenians around the world press for acknowledgement of what took place, and for justice. Steve Eubanks is a bestselling author and award-winning writer whose work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, FoxSports.com, Yahoo!, Golf Digest,Golf World,Golf Magazine.. and the list goes on... A college golfer who was resoundingly thumped often enough to realize he could not play for a living, Steve became a club professional and general manager. He became a distressed golf property specialist who did work for CitiGroup, Prudential Securities, Bank of America, and the Royal Bank of Scotland. He and a group of partners built and owned golf properties in the Southeastern U.S. Then, in a radical career move, Steve became a writer. In addition to authoring the first unauthorized club history of Augusta National, Steve has authored novels, narrative non-fiction sports-history books, a golf memoir, and co-authored books with Arnold Palmer, Lou Holtz, Jeff Gordon, Tracy Austin, Mark H. McCormack, Butch Harmon and Ty Murray among others. Steve was also the publishing consultant for the Royal & Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews. Steve is a frequent guest speaker. He taught seminars and business schools for the PGA of America, and was the keynote speaker at the 2007 Joint Forces Reserve Orientation Course, Command Second Fleet, Norfolk, Virginia. Steve lives in Peachtree City, Georgia with his wife and children. Founded in 1933, the Augusta National Golf Club is the perfect course. Co-designed by legends Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, Augusta boasts gorgeous fairways and perfectly manicured greens, set against a breathtaking backdrop of azaleas and pines. Every April, the invitation-only Masters Tournament is watched by millions of avid viewers around the globe. But the exclusive club, with a membership comprising some of the world's most powerful and influential men, is also notorious for a legacy of secrets and controversy. Journalist and novelist Steve Eubanks used all of his investigative and storytelling talents to get to the heart of Augusta's turbulent history, including its 44-year rule under the iron fist of Cliff Roberts and his suicide on the club's grounds; the Masters' impetuous yet long-standing relationship with CBS; allegations of racism; and the club's countless, rigid rules (members can even be expelled for wearing their green Augusta blazers outside the club). With 45 inspiring photographs, Eubanks's balanced account also captures the historic moments that evoke deep affection for Augusta, from Dwight Eisenhower teeing off in the days before the Masters was televised to Jack Nicklaus's emotional victory at age 46, 23 years after he won his first green jacket. With a new chapter on Tiger Woods's 1997 triumph and published just in time for the 1998 Masters, Augusta is essential reading for anyone who wants the complete story of American golf's most hallowed groundVisit the Golf Talk Radio sponsors and tell them GTRadio sent you they help make the show possible! Slickstix.com, Avila Beach Golf Resort, Blacklake Golf Resort, Shore Cliff Lodge and Aramco Mortgage and Dr. Tullius.  Visit Golftalkradio.com for the latest show information, contests, videos iPhone and Android Apps and more!
