Senior government minister Chris Bishop said his comments directed at a performance at the Aotearoa Music Awards were due to his frustration at its politicisation. The minister was heard saying "what a load of crap' during Stan Walker's performance on Thursday, and while he says he should've kept his thoughts to himself, he's not going to apologise the musician. One of his Cabinet colleagues said he disagrees with the comments, while the opposition are pointing to the history of politics in music. Political reporter Giles Dexter has more.
The breadth and depth of the New Zealand music industry will be on show on Thursday night at the Aotearoa Music Awards. Recorded Music NZ Head of Legal & Business Affairs Christy Whelan spoke to Corin Dann.

Stan Walker is walking and singing down a path that has a foundation in his kupuna. The Aotearoa recording artist, who is also an actor and TV personality, overcame many obstacles and strives to find the vibe knowing that others at home and across the Pacific appreciate what he does for his people, language, culture, and, of course, music. Hawaii News Now's Billy V caught up with the artist to learn more about his visit to the islands, the audience that continuously surrounds him, and what he loves about Hawaii and its people. Damon Arredondo is a son, a brother, a father, an entrepreneur, a dreamer, a brewer, and -- based on the four hours I spent with him in my basement studio -- an amazing human being. He's the owner and founder of Rizoma Liquid Creations, and he's my guest for Episode No. 119.Damon and I talked about growing up, family, heritage and culture, parenthood, collaborations, mental health, and beer, to just mention a few topics. We also talked about a few of Damon's favorite records, which were these:Sunrise over the Sea (2004), The John Butler TrioBalmorhea's Stranger (2012)Pedestrian Verse (2013), Frightened RabbitDirty Heads' Sound of Change (2014)Origin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2023), Kris Bowers*Rizoma continues to search for a location to call home here in Kansas City, and -- while that search continues -- Damon has been selected to participate in the Crafted for Action Conference in Atlanta next month. And if I may speak on behalf of Damon, he needs your contribution to see this important step in the process through. If you trust me when I say that Damon is good people, or if you enjoyed our conversation here on the podcast, or if you're just a kind/giving person at your core, please take a moment to learn a little bit more about this portion of Damon's journey to seeing his dream through. You can do so here.It was a privilege to meet Damon and an honor to share some time with him. I appreciate you being here and supporting the podcast, and if you are able to support Damon, well I appreciate you for that, too. Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are samples from a tune called, "Bassackwards" by Kurt Vile. The track is from his 2018 release, Bottle It In (c/o Matador Records), and I'm not going to tell you that the album is a badass record, but I will tell you that Mr. Vile is a lifetime member on the Board of Badassery. So take those tidbits and decide for yourself.*Damon loves the Stan Walker tune, "I AM" from this soundtrack, not necessarily the entire collection. I chose to list the soundtrack as part of his list just because I'm a dork like that and couldn't have a lone track listed all by its lonesome.
Stu Watts chats with Hugh Lake, who is a 28-year-old songwriter, producer and DJ who has already made a mark on the Australian music scene with an diverse mix of creative projects to his name. Lake's unorthodox journey to success follows his start as HFNR, notorious club DJ in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia; he is known for his eclectic RnB and Afrobeat influenced sets appearing alongside Sophiegrophy, Lil Spacely, Genesis Owusu, Manu Crooks, Kwame and 360. He soon moved into production, first in his bedroom and then in makeshift studio “The Cabin” built in the backyard of close collaborator and friend Kwasi, with whom he signed to urban label WVS/Onelove in early 2017 as “Kwasi x HFNR”. The HFNR era saw a slew of new wave hip hop projects that were pivotal in shaping the Australian sound. In 2020 he dropped the HFNR moniker, broadening his scope as a genre-bending songwriter and producer that infuses Hip Hop, RnB, Electronic and Pop like no one else. He would show off his tastemaking, writing and production skills on R&B artist Ceeko's debut EP ‘Where Do We Begin', and in that same year he co-wrote and produced Platinum hit “Bigger” with Stan Walker and close collaborator and fellow producer HAMLEY. They would collaborate again to mix and produce a re-imagining of the Split Enz classic “Poor Boy'' to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their seminal album “True Colours”. He then cemented his genre-hopping presence after a move to Sydney, collaborating with Phi11a, BOY SODA, Nardean and Zia Jade. He continues to expand his repertoire as Executive Producer on Lara Andallo's debut EP ‘Diamonds and Deja Vu', as well as Music Direction and Tour Management for her support of the Blxst Australian Tour and the Diamonds and Deja Vu Tour.
