February 9, 2026Today's Reading: Isaiah 55:10-13Daily Lectionary: Job 6:1-13; John 3:1-21“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth… so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Wouldn't it be great to have a purpose in life? This is the question we spend the majority of our lives contemplating and attempting to figure out. We want nothing more than to have a purpose and to then fulfill that purpose. What is crazy is that you are forced to decide in high school what you think your purpose is. You are constantly asked what you want to be when you grow up. Adults ask it as if they expect you to know your future perfectly.  But how difficult that question is to answer!   Even when we are well into the career path we have chosen, the question continues to arise: Is this it? Am I doing what I am meant to do? Am I making the difference I set out to make? I can't lie; I ask myself this question all the time.  We have a beautiful verse about purpose today. It's not your purpose; it is about the purpose of the Word of God. St. John says it best. Concerning the words of his Gospel, he says, “These things are written that you may believe and that by believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31)The purpose of the Word is to bring us to forgiveness, life, and salvation. It does this through the doctrines of Law and Gospel. The Law, which is spread throughout the Scriptures, is most often thought of as that which was given through the words of the Lord God, which He spoke to Moses. When confronted with the Law, every part of it, we realize that we have miserably failed at every chance of keeping it. We realize that we deserve nothing but death and punishment because of our actions and inaction.  Then, when we are beaten down, the Gospel enters in! The great news is that our Lord Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, who bore the weight of our sins upon the cross of Calvary, died and rose again, FOR YOU! The great news is that, though we sin daily and deserve punishment, Jesus has taken that punishment for you and gives you his perfection. What a relief knowing that we are saved solely by the work of Jesus!   While we may change our minds about our purpose and plans, the Word of God will always remain to bring liberty to the captives and freedom to those oppressed. It is to deliver to you Christ and Him crucified. Thanks be to God! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scripture to be written for our learning. In this message, we explore God's design for His people to be a kingdom of priests (Exodus 19:6). Through Jesus Christ, the priesthood is no longer limited to a few. Every believer is called, anointed, and positioned to serve God. Just as the anointing oil flowed from the head down in Psalm 133, the anointing of Christ flows through His entire body, the Church. We are being built together as a spiritual house and holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5), called to live in unity, holiness, and devotion to the Lord. This sermon reminds us that our identity is found in what God says, not what we feel. As priests, our purpose is to serve God, walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, and be one with God. Every believer is important in the Kingdom, with a God-given position under one Head, Jesus Christ.

Todaywe are looking at Ephesians 4:21 through 24, where the Apostle Paul teaches usabout putting off the old man and putting on the new man. I will neverforget a little chorus I learned years and years ago. It goes something likethis:“Well,the best thing in my life I ever did do, Was take off the old robe and put on the new.The old robe was dirty, all tattered and torn;The new robe was spotless and had never been worn.Yes, the best thing in my life I ever did doWas take off the old robe and put on the new.”Thislittle chorus fits perfectly with the verses we are studying today. First,we must recognize the importance of hearing and responding to the Truth. In verse21, Paul says, “If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, asthe truth is in Jesus.” In other words, if you have truly heard Jesus—ifyou have truly met Him, listened to Him, and embraced the truth that is inHim—and if you are determined by God's grace to do His will, then you will knowthe truth and live it. Jesus Himself said that if anyone is willing to do God'swill, he will know whether the teaching is from God. Hearing the truth leads toobedience when the heart is surrendered.  Thenwe can begin to understand what it means to “put off the old man”. Paul says inverse 22: “That you put off, concerning the former conversation, the old man,which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.”Thisis a call to deliberately lay aside the old way of living—the former conductthat is corrupted by deceitful desires. And then, in verse 24, he says: “Andthat you put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness andtrue holiness.” Oneof the best illustrations of this truth is found in the story of Lazarus inJohn chapter 11. You remember that Lazarus had been dead for four days, lyingin a tomb. When Jesus arrived, He called out, “Lazarus, come forth!” AndLazarus came out of the grave—still bound in his grave clothes. Then Jesus saidin John 11:44, “Loose him, and let him go.” In other words, take off theold grave clothes. You've been made alive—now live like it. Put on the graceclothes. Live like someone who has been changed by the grace of God. That isexactly what Paul is teaching here. The truth we have heard in Christ Jesusdemands a new way of living. Now,there is something very important in verse 23: “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” So how do youtake off the old robe—the dirty, deceitful, corrupt way of living—and put onthe new way of life? How do you live truthfully, proclaim truthfully, and walktruthfully before a watching world? You do it by being renewed in the spiritof your mind. Conversion is a crisis experience that leads to a lifelongprocess. Through Jesus Christ, we have once and for all become new creatures inHim. But now, day by day, we need the Word of God to renew our minds as wecontinually surrender ourselves to Him. Thisbrings us again to Romans 12:1–2, which we discussed yesterday. Because we havebeen saved by the mercies of God, Paul urges us to present our bodies as a livingsacrifice. You know, anybody can take a bullet and die for Jesus. But, myfriend, to live sacrificially every single day—by the grace of God, for thewill of God, and for the glory of God—that is where the real challenge lies. Weare swimming upstream against the corrupt, deceptive schemes of the devil. Andto live faithfully for Jesus in this world requires daily surrender andrenewal. Jesusprayed in John 17:17: “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” Oneof the best passages that ties into this—and we will talk about it tomorrow—is Philippians4:8-9, where Paul instructs us to think on things that are true, honest, just,pure, lovely, and of good report. You'veheard the saying, “You are what you eat.” That is true physically. Butspiritually, my friend, you are what you think. That is why being renewed inthe spirit of your mind is so vitally important. Godbless!

Many believers struggle with self-consciousness in worship, holding back from fully expressing their faith. King David's example teaches us that true worship involves our whole being and requires setting aside concerns about dignity or appearance. When David danced before the Lord, he prioritized God's worthiness over his own reputation. Learning to worship freely is like learning a new language - we must get beyond feeling awkward and focus on seeking God's presence. Through Jesus Christ, we have bold access to God's throne of grace, bringing only our weakness and receiving His mercy. Unashamed worship in church prepares us to be bold witnesses in the world, transforming both ourselves and drawing others to God.

For followers of Jesus, there is a motivating principle that surpasses all others—the cross. In today's reading, we're reminded by Paul that it is not religious piety, not personal aspirations, achievements, or even politics, that form the foundation of our life. These things may have their place, they may serve the world in certain ways, but they are not what we are called to live by, or live for. Paul declares, "May I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." The cross stands as the central principle—the banner under which we live. Because of the cross, our interest in the fleeting things of this world has been crucified, and the world's interest in us has died. What matters most is whether we have been transformed into a new creation in Christ. This new creation was made possible at the cross, where the Creator was undone for us, so that something new could be born through him in us. It is now his life that expresses itself in love through us, and this, Paul tells us, is what really counts. "May God's peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle," Paul writes. "They are the new people of God." This is the principle: from the cross, through his new people, God moves out into the world, making all things new. As God's new creation, you are invited to build your life on him, to live in the joy, the strength, and the wisdom that Jesus won for you on the cross. So let's make this our prayer: to let this principle govern our lives, our families, our communities. Let the transforming love of Christ, shown at the cross, become the foundation of all that we do. May it shape our heart, our mind, our relationships, and our purpose. This is my prayer for my own soul, for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son—and for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Let's continue now in a time of prayer. Many Christians focus on their faith journey, but equally important is the praise journey - growing in worship and adoration of God. Psalm 95 provides a roadmap for worship that moves from joyful expression to reverent adoration. We begin with singing and shouting, progress through thanksgiving and recognizing God's greatness, and conclude with quiet reverence. Worship transforms us into God's image and can change our circumstances. Through Jesus Christ, we all have access to God's presence in the holy of holies. You were created to declare God's praise regardless of personality or denomination.

Rev. James Harper preaches on Ecclesiastes 3:16-4:3 as part of our sermon series entitled, "The Search: Questions of Meaning and Purpose." Life's greatest question - why does God allow suffering - has puzzled humanity throughout history. Despite all our advances, suffering persists, and human philosophies like stoicism, dualism, hedonism, and karma ultimately fall short of providing real answers. The Bible reveals that suffering entered through human sin, disrupting God's originally good creation. However, God hasn't remained distant from our pain. Through Jesus Christ, God entered into suffering Himself, taking on our sin and its consequences out of love. While we see only a small piece of God's plan, like viewing three inches of a tapestry being woven, we can trust that the God who creates beauty is crafting something beautiful from our circumstances.

When disaster strikes, we often struggle with trust in ourselves, others, and God. Genesis 9 shows us how God meets Noah's family after the flood with a powerful covenant (or promise) that offers comfort and security. This covenant has four key aspects: its broad scope includes all creation, its security is permanent across generations, its singularity means it depends solely on God's faithfulness, and its seal (the rainbow) serves as a reminder of God's commitment. The problem, as Hunter points out, is that we so often lack the eyes to see what is real. We live off-center, with our lives orbiting around lesser things, and as a result, things feel out of order, chaotic, and confusing. But in heaven's vision, everything finds its place around Christ. When he is at the center, worship bursts forth. Life begins to make sense and aligns itself with its true purpose. The many-eyed creatures in the scene are always aware of him; John sees him and writes so we might see him, too. Let's begin today's journey together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Who are you? That was the question on everyone's lips in John 8. The religious leaders, confused and threatened by Jesus, kept demanding an answer. Who could he possibly be? Why did his words stir up so much fear—and so much hope? Sometimes, just like those early listeners, our own hearts are not ready to truly hear Jesus's answer. We find ourselves blinded by lies—lies that feed our fears, that swell our pride, that paint God with the colors of our own anxieties. These lies keep us from seeing Jesus for who he really is, and they keep us from the healing he longs to give. So what does God do when we are lost in that darkness? He comes. He doesn't shame us or turn away—he steps into our confusion and brokenness with love. In Jesus, God shows us the way of love: self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will know that I am he.” If we want to see who Jesus is, we have only to look at the cross. There, we see what the woman caught in adultery saw: the one who stoops down, enters into the dust of our lives, and writes something new—a story not of condemnation, but of mercy and life. At the cross, we see the one who takes away the sin of the world, who includes us in the love he shares with the Father. We see love; that is who he is. That's the prayer of my heart today: that I would truly hear and see Jesus answer that old question, “Who are you?”—and that I would recognize Love lifted up for the world. This is my prayer for myself, for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's my prayer for you, too. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Come with your ears wide open. Are you thirsty? Are you hungry? Then come to God. Don't come in ignorance, or with a sense of doom, fearing what you'll hear him say. Instead, come with your ears wide open, because what you'll hear are God's words of love—a love that will never fail. In Isaiah 55:3 we hear this invitation: “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.” See how rich and generous the gifts of God are for the hungry and thirsty, for the broken. It's beyond what we can imagine. We so often close our ears to God, because we fear. We fear his words of judgment, of rejection. But the prophet says otherwise. Open your ears wide—because what you'll hear is a generous forgiveness, a mercy that far exceeds our highest hopes. Isaiah continues: “Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” His thoughts about you—his plans for you—are greater and richer and better than you could ever dream. It is his word, this generous food for the hungry, that opens our eyes and minds to his heart and his ways. Isaiah 55:11 says, “It is the same with my word. I send it out and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” All of this is an everlasting sign of his power and his love. So look up, thirsty one, and see what God has done. He has sent the final word—his Son. Open your ears wide and hear God's answer to your thirst, your hunger, your brokenness: it's Jesus, the living Word. So come with your ears wide open. Listen—and you will find life. That's the prayer that I have for my own heart, for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day. Preserve us with your mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. This hope is not diminished by suffering. Instead, suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope that does not disappoint, for God's love is poured into their hearts through the Holy Spirit. The love of God sustains them as He sent His Son to die for them, bringing reconciliation, salvation, and abiding joy. Paul contrasts Adam and Christ to illustrate humanity's redemption: Adam's sin brought death and condemnation to all, while Christ's obedience brings righteousness and life. Sin entered through one man's disobedience, but grace overflows to many through one Man's sacrifice. Through Jesus Christ our Lord comes the free gift of righteousness, sustained by reigning grace and protecting us unto eternal life. Living in the grace of Jesus Christ enables us to rejoice in life, no matter our circumstances. Even when we encounter various trials, these present us with opportunities to trust Him more and show our loyalty to our King. God's love, shown by the support of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus, offers us assurance of protection and hope that this world cannot undermine. What man has broken through sin, God has forever repaired through Jesus. Therefore, the gift of righteousness should be our greatest treasure. Christians must express gratitude daily by maintaining an attitude of joy, praising God openly for His grace, and avoiding the sin that led Jesus to die on the cross on our behalf.  Heavenly Father, we praise You for uplifting us with Your love, enabling us to stand in Your grace and rejoice in Your Son. Challenge us to live with ongoing courage and hope, showing our faith in You through difficult circumstances and when interacting with challenging people. Mankind has often chosen sin, but Your Son chose righteousness, and He has made all the difference. Empower us to be devoted to living righteously in His honor. Fill us with gratitude for Your grace and for Your Son's sacrifice on the cross. We will flee the sin that nailed Him there, in Jesus' name.   Thought Questions: -       What helps you be at peace during difficult times? TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don't Miss the Point We are so prone to miss the point when we misapply the law. It can lead us into a life of pride and arrogance or self-loathing and despair. Engaging with the law in this way, as Hunter reminds us, can become a colossal exercise in missing the point. When we seek to justify ourselves by keeping the law or becoming experts in its letters, we actually miss the underlying message and purpose. That's exactly what Paul points out in his letter to Timothy—some people have veered from the simple truth, spending their days in meaningless discussions that add nothing to a life of faith (see 1 Timothy 1:6). They had turned away from the simple gospel, the good news that is received by faith and fills our hearts with love, cleanses our conscience, and makes us new. Paul reemphasizes this in verse 5: “The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” This, Hunter says, is the real deal—this is the point. This is the work that God alone can do as his Spirit abides in his people. Through the Spirit's presence, God brings about a new heart, a clean conscience, and a new life. And we need to remember: that's a gift. It isn't something we can attain by mastering the law. True change comes not from our proficiency or expertise, but from the Master's presence in our lives. As we surrender, as we let the Master master us, God reclaims that which was lost. That's the power and the gift of the gospel, the very truth Paul is unashamed to proclaim. Living in the reality of Christ in you means you're not missing out on love, generosity, or peace—they are yours. And in receiving them, you'll have something beautiful to offer this world. That's a prayer Hunter has for his own soul, for his family, and for you: that we may not miss the point, but instead receive the love of God, a clean conscience, and a new life in Christ. Romans 1:7-15 — Conversion is not the end of the Christian journey; it's the beginning. The apostle Paul was aware of this and longed to visit the Christians in Rome so that he might strengthen them. In this sermon titled “My God, Through Jesus Christ” from Romans 1:7–15, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones displays the apostle Paul's love for others which stems from his confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ. Filled with the Spirit, Paul's passion is clearly seen as he thinks of others, prays for them, and seeks to visit them. Among many Christians today, the primary concern is for oneself. A person talks about their own personal journey toward God. It's not uncommon to hear a Christian declare, “I'm just focusing on myself right now.” But is this the way of Christ? Through Jesus, Christians have confidence before God. Christians are no longer simply “seeking God,” but rather seeking to love others through the assurance they have found in Jesus Christ. Listen in as Dr. Lloyd-Jones demonstrates how the gospel motivated Paul, not only with the desire to visit and strengthen others, but to pray for them. As Paul comes to God in prayer, he comes through the one in whom he has such confidence: the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the way of salvation and the Christian desires all others to be built up in Him.
