Settle in as we open our hearts to God's Word and let His grace transform us together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: It's a matter of principle. For followers of Jesus, there is a motivating principle that surpasses all others—the cross. In today's reading, we're reminded by Paul that it is not religious piety, not personal aspirations, achievements, or even politics, that form the foundation of our life. These things may have their place, they may serve the world in certain ways, but they are not what we are called to live by, or live for. Paul declares, "May I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." The cross stands as the central principle—the banner under which we live. Because of the cross, our interest in the fleeting things of this world has been crucified, and the world's interest in us has died. What matters most is whether we have been transformed into a new creation in Christ. This new creation was made possible at the cross, where the Creator was undone for us, so that something new could be born through him in us. It is now his life that expresses itself in love through us, and this, Paul tells us, is what really counts. "May God's peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle," Paul writes. "They are the new people of God." This is the principle: from the cross, through his new people, God moves out into the world, making all things new. As God's new creation, you are invited to build your life on him, to live in the joy, the strength, and the wisdom that Jesus won for you on the cross. So let's make this our prayer: to let this principle govern our lives, our families, our communities. Let the transforming love of Christ, shown at the cross, become the foundation of all that we do. May it shape our heart, our mind, our relationships, and our purpose. This is my prayer for my own soul, for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son—and for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Let's continue now in a time of prayer. Many Christians focus on their faith journey, but equally important is the praise journey - growing in worship and adoration of God. Psalm 95 provides a roadmap for worship that moves from joyful expression to reverent adoration. We begin with singing and shouting, progress through thanksgiving and recognizing God's greatness, and conclude with quiet reverence. Worship transforms us into God's image and can change our circumstances. Through Jesus Christ, we all have access to God's presence in the holy of holies. You were created to declare God's praise regardless of personality or denomination.

Life's greatest question - why does God allow suffering - has puzzled humanity throughout history. When disaster strikes, we often struggle with trust in ourselves, others, and God. Genesis 9 shows us how God meets Noah's family after the flood with a powerful covenant (or promise) that offers comfort and security. This covenant has four key aspects: its broad scope includes all creation, its security is permanent across generations, its singularity means it depends solely on God's faithfulness, and its seal (the rainbow) serves as a reminder of God's commitment. October 4, 2025 Today's Reading: Introit for Pentecost 17 - Psalm 119:162, 164-165, 167; antiphon: Psalm 119:166Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 4:21-40; Matthew 8:1-17 “I hope for your salvation, O Lord, and I do your commandments. I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. Seven times a day I praise you for your just and righteous decrees. Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly. I hope for your salvation, O Lord, and I do your commandments.” (Psalm 119:162, 164–165, 167; antiphon: v. 166) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Tomorrow's introit is from nearly the end of the great psalm with its 176 verses. Here, the psalmist hopes for the salvation of the Lord. An antiphon opens and closes the recitation of a Psalm or introit. It gives us a lens of sorts to view the text. Verse 166 gives us a thumbnail of the Christian life. Live in your salvation, do the Commandments, fail, remember your Baptism, wash, rinse, repeat. We long for His salvation day after day. Rejoicing in God's Word is also our life in Christianity. It's interesting that Jesus speaks to us the same way we pray the Psalms about Him. We rejoice at the great treasure in His work. He'll sell all that He has, giving up His life for you, the treasure in a field. No price is too great for Him. He even gives us the spoils of His victory. He clothes us in a robe of His righteousness. Martin Luther and others taught that verse 164 was the basis of the medieval church's “hours” prayer. The hours: Matins, Prime, Terce, Sext, Nones, Vespers, and Compline were prayed in monasteries throughout Europe. They took a literal approach to praying. And there's no harm in that. Muslims pray five times a day. Couldn't we do the same or more? Shouldn't we? Yes, we ought. But our prayer accomplishes something. The dead Muslim god can do nothing. But our Jesus hears our prayer. He has the power to save us. Moreover, He does exactly that, forgiving and refreshing us day by day. We end as we began. Live in your salvation, do the Commandments, fail, remember your Baptism, wash, rinse, repeat until the day that salvation dawns. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. O Lord, grant to your faithful people pardon and peace that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; Through Jesus Christ, your son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Do you see it? The vision given to John in Revelation 4 places Christ, the Lamb, at the very heart of heaven—the center of what truly is and what will forever be. All of creation encircles the throne: the four living beings, the elders, and a great choir. Yet, at the core of it all is Jesus. The problem, as Hunter points out, is that we so often lack the eyes to see what is real. We live off-center, with our lives orbiting around lesser things, and as a result, things feel out of order, chaotic, and confusing. But in heaven's vision, everything finds its place around Christ. When he is at the center, worship bursts forth. Life begins to make sense and aligns itself with its true purpose. The many-eyed creatures in the scene are always aware of him; John sees him and writes so we might see him, too. Let's begin today's journey together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Who are you? That was the question on everyone's lips in John 8. The religious leaders, confused and threatened by Jesus, kept demanding an answer. Who could he possibly be? Why did his words stir up so much fear—and so much hope? Sometimes, just like those early listeners, our own hearts are not ready to truly hear Jesus's answer. We find ourselves blinded by lies—lies that feed our fears, that swell our pride, that paint God with the colors of our own anxieties. These lies keep us from seeing Jesus for who he really is, and they keep us from the healing he longs to give. So what does God do when we are lost in that darkness? He comes. He doesn't shame us or turn away—he steps into our confusion and brokenness with love. In Jesus, God shows us the way of love: self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will know that I am he.” If we want to see who Jesus is, we have only to look at the cross. There, we see what the woman caught in adultery saw: the one who stoops down, enters into the dust of our lives, and writes something new—a story not of condemnation, but of mercy and life. At the cross, we see the one who takes away the sin of the world, who includes us in the love he shares with the Father. We see love; that is who he is. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Come with your ears wide open. Are you thirsty? Are you hungry? Then come to God. Don't come in ignorance, or with a sense of doom, fearing what you'll hear him say. Instead, come with your ears wide open, because what you'll hear are God's words of love—a love that will never fail. In Isaiah 55:3 we hear this invitation: “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.” See how rich and generous the gifts of God are for the hungry and thirsty, for the broken. It's beyond what we can imagine. We so often close our ears to God, because we fear. We fear his words of judgment, of rejection. But the prophet says otherwise. Open your ears wide—because what you'll hear is a generous forgiveness, a mercy that far exceeds our highest hopes. Isaiah continues: “Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” His thoughts about you—his plans for you—are greater and richer and better than you could ever dream. It is his word, this generous food for the hungry, that opens our eyes and minds to his heart and his ways. Isaiah 55:11 says, “It is the same with my word. I send it out and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” All of this is an everlasting sign of his power and his love. So look up, thirsty one, and see what God has done. He has sent the final word—his Son. Open your ears wide and hear God's answer to your thirst, your hunger, your brokenness: it's Jesus, the living Word. So come with your ears wide open. Listen—and you will find life. That's the prayer that I have for my own heart, for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Today's Promise: 2 Corinthians 5:18 God uses the word "reconcile" in this promise. It is not a word we use very often. It means to bring together or to change thoroughly. It's the picture of two enemies becoming friends. God has reconciled us to Him. Through Jesus Christ, although we were once enemies, we are now friends of God. Since you are a new creature and have the righteousness of Christ in you, God calls you to a ministry of reconciliation. You are to help your friends become reconciled to God.

This hope is not diminished by suffering. Instead, suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope that does not disappoint, for God's love is poured into their hearts through the Holy Spirit. The love of God sustains them as He sent His Son to die for them, bringing reconciliation, salvation, and abiding joy. Paul contrasts Adam and Christ to illustrate humanity's redemption: Adam's sin brought death and condemnation to all, while Christ's obedience brings righteousness and life. Sin entered through one man's disobedience, but grace overflows to many through one Man's sacrifice. Through Jesus Christ our Lord comes the free gift of righteousness, sustained by reigning grace and protecting us unto eternal life. Living in the grace of Jesus Christ enables us to rejoice in life, no matter our circumstances. Even when we encounter various trials, these present us with opportunities to trust Him more and show our loyalty to our King. God's love, shown by the support of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus, offers us assurance of protection and hope that this world cannot undermine. What man has broken through sin, God has forever repaired through Jesus. Therefore, the gift of righteousness should be our greatest treasure. Christians must express gratitude daily by maintaining an attitude of joy, praising God openly for His grace, and avoiding the sin that led Jesus to die on the cross on our behalf.  Heavenly Father, we praise You for uplifting us with Your love, enabling us to stand in Your grace and rejoice in Your Son. Challenge us to live with ongoing courage and hope, showing our faith in You through difficult circumstances and when interacting with challenging people. Mankind has often chosen sin, but Your Son chose righteousness, and He has made all the difference. Empower us to be devoted to living righteously in His honor. Fill us with gratitude for Your grace and for Your Son's sacrifice on the cross. We will flee the sin that nailed Him there, in Jesus' name.   Thought Questions: -       What helps you be at peace during difficult times? TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don't Miss the Point We are so prone to miss the point when we misapply the law. It can lead us into a life of pride and arrogance or self-loathing and despair. Engaging with the law in this way, as Hunter reminds us, can become a colossal exercise in missing the point. When we seek to justify ourselves by keeping the law or becoming experts in its letters, we actually miss the underlying message and purpose. That's exactly what Paul points out in his letter to Timothy—some people have veered from the simple truth, spending their days in meaningless discussions that add nothing to a life of faith (see 1 Timothy 1:6). They had turned away from the simple gospel, the good news that is received by faith and fills our hearts with love, cleanses our conscience, and makes us new. Paul reemphasizes this in verse 5: “The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” This, Hunter says, is the real deal—this is the point. This is the work that God alone can do as his Spirit abides in his people. Through the Spirit's presence, God brings about a new heart, a clean conscience, and a new life. And we need to remember: that's a gift. It isn't something we can attain by mastering the law. True change comes not from our proficiency or expertise, but from the Master's presence in our lives. As we surrender, as we let the Master master us, God reclaims that which was lost. That's the power and the gift of the gospel, the very truth Paul is unashamed to proclaim. Living in the reality of Christ in you means you're not missing out on love, generosity, or peace—they are yours. And in receiving them, you'll have something beautiful to offer this world. That's a prayer Hunter has for his own soul, for his family, and for you: that we may not miss the point, but instead receive the love of God, a clean conscience, and a new life in Christ. Romans 1:7-15 — Conversion is not the end of the Christian journey; it's the beginning. The apostle Paul was aware of this and longed to visit the Christians in Rome so that he might strengthen them. In this sermon titled “My God, Through Jesus Christ” from Romans 1:7–15, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones displays the apostle Paul's love for others which stems from his confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ. Filled with the Spirit, Paul's passion is clearly seen as he thinks of others, prays for them, and seeks to visit them. Among many Christians today, the primary concern is for oneself. A person talks about their own personal journey toward God. It's not uncommon to hear a Christian declare, “I'm just focusing on myself right now.” But is this the way of Christ? Through Jesus, Christians have confidence before God. Christians are no longer simply “seeking God,” but rather seeking to love others through the assurance they have found in Jesus Christ. Listen in as Dr. Lloyd-Jones demonstrates how the gospel motivated Paul, not only with the desire to visit and strengthen others, but to pray for them. As Paul comes to God in prayer, he comes through the one in whom he has such confidence: the Lord Jesus Christ. All through today's readings we saw God searching—looking not just at the kings of Israel or Judah, not just at Asa or Baasha or Omri, but looking for hearts fully committed to Him. The Scriptures say, “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” Time and again, Israel's history was marked by leaders who missed the mark—who, despite God's faithfulness, turned to idols, alliances, or their own wisdom rather than trusting Him fully. Even Asa, who began so well, faltered in trusting foreign kings, and in the end, sought only human help. But the good news, as Paul announces in the letter to the Colossians, is that God has indeed found what He's been searching for—not in any of those kings, not in us, but in His Son. There is only One who ever truly lived a life fully committed to the Father. And when the Father looked at the Son, He said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” Here's the miracle: by God's grace, you and I are now found in the Son. Christ has reconciled us to Himself through His death on the cross. Paul tells us, “As a result, He has brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault.” The thing God has been searching for—wholehearted devotion, purity, and faithfulness—is now found in Christ, and because you are in Him, it is found in you too. Not by our striving or our record, but by Christ's victory. This is the secret Paul wants us to see: “Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing His glory.” You are not only reconciled, forgiven, and restored, but you are now blameless in God's presence. God's search is over—He finds His heart's desire in you, because you are in His Son. Let the truth of this gospel settle in your heart today: You are loved, accepted, and holy in Christ. Christ has done what no king, no prophet, no human heart on its own ever could. Now let us live from that place—abiding in Him, depending on Christ's power at work within us, and letting His joy be our strength. That is my prayer for you, for those you love, and for my own soul today. May you enter into the joy of being found—completely, eternally—in Christ. God may be opposed to trying to earn something, but he's not opposed to our effort. So let's work at it. We have to work at it because effort is what it's going to take, and our work is an active participation with God. It's a testimony of our inclusion into the life and love of God. It's not done in exchange for his favor or love. No, he has already included us and loved us. Our work is a response to what we have become, what he has made us—his children. So we work. We participate, we respond. We share in the ministry of Christ in this world now. And we all get to do this. Not just the hired folks, the pastors and teachers, the people who speak for a living. No, we are all a part of God's kingdom work. In Ephesians 4:3, we're told that we are to make every effort to keep ourselves unified in the Spirit. Make the effort by throwing off those old attitudes and behaviors that lead to hopelessness. Instead, work at stepping into and training your heart in new attitudes that lead to life and hope and a future. Ephesians 4:4 says that you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. We are to make every effort to renew our mind and thoughts and attitudes. We do that by hearing and applying the gospel to our daily lives. We have to work at that. We have to receive the good news of Christ's sufficiency. We have to remind our hearts daily that his grace is sufficient for all that we face. We need to rest in his love and care for us every day. That is a worthy effort that God honors. Jesus says, for everyone who asks, receives; everyone who seeks, finds; and to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. That will require effort, but the strength will be his. The spirit of Christ living in and through us will be the strength that enables us to work at it. The good news of Christ will be the thing that renews our heart, mind, and attitude. Then we can begin to experience that glorious hope for the future that we have in him. And God's answer is to send his son, to come and meet us in our darkness. In love, he comes into the world, into the far country in pursuit of you. He comes for us. He comes for all of humanity. He comes on our behalf that he might taste death for all. But in his dying, he defeats death and the darkness and the grave, and he drags us with him out the other side into resurrection life. When we are drawn into God's life, we are born again, given a new heart that can trust and walk in relationship with God and be truly changed. This is the evidence that we are the true children of God. That relationship with God is based not on my piety or my pedigree, but on God's grace revealed to us in the person and the work of Christ himself. God has given us the answer to our need for a new heart, and it's his son. Let us live in the power of Christ, our Lord, the Son of God. Abiding in him, in his word, in his joy, and in his life. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don't Be Shaken, Don't Be Fooled There is so much in life that can shake us—circumstances that feel out of control, relationships that wound and break, financial strains, physical pain, anxieties that mount and press on us till we're overwhelmed. All these things can leave us feeling uncertain, destabilized, and even in despair. In these moments, God can feel distant, and hope can seem just out of reach. But into the midst of our fears and confusion, we hear Paul's pastoral, fatherly voice to the church in Thessalonica: “Don't be shaken. Don't be fooled.” The early church struggled too. There were loud voices swirling; teachers with anxious warnings and convincing bravado who wanted the Thessalonian believers to think they were missing out, not doing enough, believing the wrong things, or soon to be left behind. How easy it is, then and now, to listen to those voices—to think that our relationship with God rests on some extra thing we must do, some spiritual secret we have to attain, or a hidden requirement we might have missed. But Paul cuts through all the noise. He reminds us that it is God who chooses us, God who acts first, God who carries out salvation. As he says, “Salvation came through the Spirit who makes you holy and through your belief in the truth.” We don't need to carry the burden of saving ourselves or climb higher to earn our place with God. Paul insists the good news is what God has done for us—and we simply receive it. We don't have to go out looking, chasing after some elusive experience. We don't have to strive and strain, wondering if we've done enough. Someone has already come looking for us. Someone has entered into our wilderness—into all our confusion and fear, all our striving and exhaustion—and offered us life. Because of what Christ has done, we now share in his glory, not by our own effort, but by his grace. So, don't be shaken. Don't be fooled. Instead, stand firm. Keep a strong grip on what is true—the teaching that God has drawn you into his life, that you are reconciled, you are loved, and you are securely held. Rest in the knowledge that he's the one who has taken hold of you, and he won't let you go. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May we all stand firm in his love today. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Prayer Lord of heaven and earth, you have awakened us in your mercy once more. Still our anxious minds, quiet our striving hearts, and help us to rest in the knowledge that we are held by you.
