I know the real reason why Federated Farmers is so brassed-off with Environment Canterbury. Nevertheless, I agree with them. They're saying that ECan is showing “flagrant disregard” for the community, with this push it's making for Ngāi Tahu to have a permanent role in the region's resource management after ECan disappears. Because, with the Government's local government reforms, ECan is toast. But what ECan wants to do before it goes out of existence, is sign a deal with Ngāi Tahu and eight of the 10 Canterbury rūnanga, which would have given them a mandatory, permanent role in planning, resource consent processes, monitoring and reporting. Which has got Federated Farmers' RMA spokesperson Mark Hooper all excited. He is condemning the move - saying it shouldn't be happening before the local government reforms. And he wants the Government to step in and tell ECan to drop the idea. And I agree with him. The real reason Federated Farmers is so spooked by this, is that it wil be thinking that it's a repeat of the co-governance sideshow we saw with the previous Labour Government's 3 Waters reforms. But what ECan is doing here is, to put it politely, a case of the cart before the horse. And the Government must step-in and tell them to drop it. Because, if these reforms are going to be worth all the upheaval, we can't have any premature side deals and arrangements being made before it's even known how many councils there are going to be and where they're going to be. To me, this move by ECan looks like an outfit that has its nose out of joint because of the reforms and wants to make some sort of political statement doing this deal with Ngāi Tahu. What ECan will tell you, is that, since 2013, it's had an agreement with Ngāi Tahu which effectively means it doesn't do anything without getting the iwi's approval first. But, because ECan is going to be disestablished, it wants to sneak this one through before the lights go out. Which is a bit like someone selling a business and, before they hand over the keys, giving all the staff a massive pay rise and signing them up to lifetime contracts. Which wouldn't be tolerated. And that's why this move by ECan, which is refusing to talk about it, shouldn't be tolerated. As Mark Hooper from Federated Farmers says: “ECan is showing flagrant disregard for its community, pushing this through with no public notification before it appeared on the agenda.” He says: “That's deeply concerning and we're calling on the Government to intervene, so councils can't rush these agreements through before the system is reformed.” And he's spot on. Conductor, pianist and Opera Australia Head of Music Tahu Matheson joins In Conversation ahead of the Sydney season of The Drover's Wife, the acclaimed new Australian opera by George Palmer and Leah Purcell. Tahu explains why he believes the story is perfectly suited to opera, reflecting on the emotional power of the singing voice, the accessibility of Palmer's score, and his experience of helping shape a brand-new work from early workshops through to the world premiere. The conversation also explores Tahu's musical upbringing, following his conductor father around Europe before settling in Australia, his early ambitions to become a concert pianist, and the unexpected moment that changed the course of his career: discovering Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. He shares his lifelong fascination with opera, the transition from pianist to répétiteur and conductor, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the often unseen work of Opera Australia's music staff, from coaching singers and preparing scores to balancing orchestral and vocal forces in performance.Tahu also discusses the challenges of presenting contemporary opera alongside the great classics, why he believes audiences are rediscovering the thrill of live performance, and the enduring power of opera to move, challenge and inspire. Tahu Matheson conducts The Drover's Wife for Opera Australia, August 7-15.

What can a World War I fighter pilot teach you about investing? The Red Baron built his success on discipline, structure, and stacking the odds in his favour, but lost everything in a single moment of emotion.

Duncan Garner takes aim at the growing fight over Santana Minerals' proposed gold mine in Central Otago, after Ngāi Tahu opposed the project following reports of a $180 million figure being discussed. Duncan argues this is no ordinary consent battle. He says it goes to the heart of whether New Zealand is still a place where major projects can get built, investors can have certainty, and high paying regional jobs can actually exist. ACT MP and undersecretary Simon Court joins the show to discuss the Santana mine, the RMA changes coming through Parliament, and whether the Government's reforms will stop what he calls “shakedowns” in the planning system. Duncan also shares the story of a local business owner giving up on New Zealand and heading to Australia to try his luck in the mines. Is this about protecting the environment, or has the system tipped too far? And if New Zealand keeps making it this hard to build, who will be left to pay the bills? Learn more about your ad choices. Concerns have been raised by iwi Ngāi Tahu over the Central Otago gold mine proposed by Santana Minerals. At a hearing of the Fast-track expert panel in Dunedin on Tuesday, Kā Rūnaka, made up of four rūnaka representing southern Ngāi Tahu hapū, said they opposed the project. ACT's Simon Court says Ngāi Tahu reportedly asked for shares in the gold mine - or for an alternative deal to be established. "From the outside looking in, some people are calling this the 'great Santana shakedown'. But that's not how New Zealand should be, because all of these costs end up flowing either into household bills - or it means fewer jobs."

Firman-Nya tegas berbicara, "Bertolong-tolonganlah menanggung bebanmu! Demikianlah kamu memenuhi hukum Kristus." Mari kita memenuhi hukum Kristus dengan saling tolong menolong. Jangan pandang bulu dalam menolong. Tolonglah dengan tulus hati. Jangan ada pamrih dalam menolong. Semua bagi kemuliaan nama Tuhan saja. Tuhan Yesus memberkati. Doa:Tuhan Yesus, taruhlah roh belas kasih-Mu dalam hatiku, sehingga aku selalu tergerak untuk menolong orang lain yang sedang mengalami kesusahan. Amin. (Dod).

The 1990s in New Zealand have dawned with images of harmony projected to the world, but longstanding divisions still acute at home. The Bolger government comes to power promising to uphold the Treaty and provide redress for injustice. Negotiations over the Sealords fishery quota and with two of Aotearoa's largest iwi, Waikato Tainui and Ngāi Tahu face pushback from all directions: in cabinet and the National Party base, from the public, and within te ao Māori, where the concept of the “fiscal envelope” is widely considered anathema. Plus: how Jim Bolger outmanoeuvered Ruth Richardson on Te Papa. The fifth episode of Juggernaut 2: The Story of the Fourth National Government includes new and exclusive interviews with Jim Bolger, Anake Goodall, Doug Graham, Tau Henare, Jenny Shipley and more.
