Here are the other probable runners for the undercard races to the Stephen Foster we will handicap the $300,000 Fleur de Lis (GII), run at 1 1/8 miles for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up, Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Distaff Division: Dreamalildreamofu (Brad Cox); Envoutante (Kenny McPeek); Point of Honor (Shug McGaughey); Singita Dreams (Phil Bauer); SpiceIs Nice (Todd Pletcher); and Vault (Brad Cox). · $300,000 Wise Dan (GII), run at 1 1/16 miles on turf for 4-year-olds and up: Field Pass (Mike Maker); In Love (BRZ) (Paulo Lobo); Ride a Comet (Mark Casse); Set Piece (GB) (Brad Cox); and Somelikeithotbrown (Mike Maker). Possible: Spooky Channel (Jason Barkley). Hugh Drexler, the Racing Secretary at Thistledown will make his first appearance on the show as he lends his insights to Ohio's biggest day of racing, anchored by the $500,000 GIII Ohio Derby. Drexler was born into racing as his father was a jockey and his grandfather and great-grandfather were trainers in Puerto Rico. A graduate of the Racetrack Industry Program in Arizona, he had internships with the Breeders' Cup and Santa Anita. He eventually did the paddock shows at Sunray and Rillito Park. Even old-timers familiar with the Cleveland area track, are saying that this year's edition is the strongest ever. In our era of small fields in stakes races, Drexler and his crew in the racing office drew a highly competitive field of 11. Nine of the eleven 3-year-olds will draw their regular riders or top jocks from major venues. Three graded stakes winner and two graded stakes-place runners are set to travel the 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. Weather sources indicated a 50-50 chance of rain. Breaking from the inside post Promise Keeper was made the tepid favorite, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Luis Saez. The $250,000 Lady Jacqueline at 9 furlongs has drawn together a talent-laden field of nine fillies and mares. Pletcher has Spice Is Nice entered here and at Churchill Downs with John Velazquez slated to ride.

Caroline Walker joins me in this interview to talk about a well known literary press in Canada, Thistledown Press which is based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Caroline has had a rich and diverse career in the publishing world and she became the Managing Editor at Thistledown in October 2020. We talk about the kinds of books Thistledown publishes, how they work with book agents and also take manuscripts directly from authors. Thistledown sells its books through the University of Toronto Press. Like all publishers in this COVID period, Thistledown has had to look at how to launch and market books without live events, but hopefully that will change soon. Listen in as we hear another perspective on how authors should carefully choose the publishers they approach by doing their homework first to find the best fit! https://www.thistledownpress.com/index.cfm—Richelle Wiseman: website | linkedin | facebook

This podcast features Western Canadian authors reading from their novels, short fiction, poetry, memoirs, or non-fiction. It is created and hosted by Saskatchewan novelist Lisa Guenther. Reading West is open to featuring published authors from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. For the most part, the podcast focuses on literature, but writers working in other genres are welcome to inquire. For more information on submitting, visit lisaguenther.com/reading-west-podcast/ You can also check out the show on Facebook at www.facebook.com/readingwest/ Theme music is Flax Flower Blue by Best Kept Secret Girlfriend Bernadette Wagner, writer, editor, and community based educator, has recent work in Absent Mothers (DP: 2017) and Without Apology: Writings on Abortion in Canada (AUP: 2016). Her poetry and nonfiction have been broadcast on radio and TV, recorded on video and film, and published in magazines and anthologies. Shortlisted for the Saskatchewan First Book Award, she toured This hot place (Thistledown, 2010), her first poetry collection, across the country. An activist for social justice, a spokesperson for various feminist organizations, a founder of the Prairie Lily Feminist Society and Friends of Regina Public Library, a board member for the Saskatchewan Writers Guild and Sage Hill Writing Experience, a past Literary Co-ordinator and two-time Chair of the Cathedral Village Arts Festival, and the inaugural literary artist-in-residence at the Last Mountain Lake Cultural Centre, Bernadette lives in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Dry Valley encapsulates one woman’s relationship with herself, her alcoholic spouse, and the world, in three different Saskatchewan landscapes. The poems offer a fascinating interplay between mindful explorations of self and immersions in the challenging complexities of interpersonal relationships, social issues and meaningful engagement with the environment. The quiet, meditative quality of the longer lyrics rub up against the edgier narrative poems, contributing a wonderful tension to the manuscript. With figurative language kept to a minimum, the poems rely on detail, giving a real-time felt presence and the speaker a heightened reliability.

"Thistledown is part of the cultural fabric in the community," Mr. Lokke says of the 94-year-old thoroughbred racetrack and casino. Listen as Mr. Lokke shares the inside story on Thistledown operations. Did you know that on the property, there are 1,050 stables and dorms for some employees? He dispels some myths surrounding the video lottery terminals and he describes the excitement surrounding opening day which is Monday, April 29. In 2016, Mr. Lokke oversaw the racino's $70 million expansion which included a parking garage and new restaurants and sports bar. This included a rebranding at the time, too. That followed $13 million in improvements, including the expansion of an outdoor gaming patio, which opened in 2014. The racino has seen significant growth since making these changes. Hear Mr. Lokke talk about how millenials are affecting the gaming business. "They aren't inspired by three spinning wheels," he says.
