Our tabletop RPG advice column, Dear Gary, returns with these questions: - Dear Listener writes: Dear Gary, I run games (often one shots) that are made accessible to a rather wide pool of players, and sometimes get an unexpectedly large group. How do I keep everyone consistently engaged in the session and off their phones at higher player counts? - Brian writes: Dear Gary, could you discuss the main house rules you use for your 5e/D&D games? Have you been inspired to add any rules from other game systems to your D&D games?- Brian writes: Dear Gary, what are your thoughts on game systems that use species (or race) as class, such as basic/expert D&D (from 80s), Dungeon Crawl Classics, or others?- Brian writes: Dear Gary, what is a game you have been eager to play but not gotten to the table?Show notes page: https://ggnorecast.com/243.
The official announcement of Crows by MCDM Productions, a new dungeon-crawling RPG led by James Introcaso appeared on Patreon. The game uses D6s and D10s, features a health system tied to inventory slots similar to Knave, and determines experience points based on the value of loot collected. It differs from a previous project, Draw Steel, by including potential negative results on the “power roll” but allows unlimited circumstantial bonuses for good planning. Crows also includes a base-building component where players develop their headquarters town and is set in a world where Archmages, corrupted by their magic, disappeared after warring as Necromancers. Undergoblin Heist by Hit Point Press is a hardcover adventure available with six accompanying miniatures. This wild sandbox goblin adventure is compatible with both Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Edition and Dungeon Crawl Classics. The players take on the role of the “Grotty Jacknives,” expert sneak-goblins tasked by Boss Soot to steal three magical artifacts from a cabbage goblin village. The adventure includes pre-generated characters, new species/class rules, a new spell, and a goblin Critical Hits table, and is written by Thom Denick with art and design by Bee Ho. The “Magic: The Gathering’s newest Secret Lair” drop, titled ‘Prints Charming,’ was released on February 2 as a “Chaos Vault” experiment by Wizards of the Coast. The collection is a quartet of green spells with different illustration styles, but its unusual aspect is the variable pricing tiers. Instead of a fixed price, the drop was offered at multiple points, ranging from a low of $9.99 up to $39.99 (and a foil version up to $49.99), ostensibly to test how much fans value the product. Despite the secondary market value of the cards being around $6, the experiment yielded bizarre sales results, with the most expensive $49.99 foil edition selling out earlier than the cheaper $29.99 foil edition, indicating some buyers were voluntarily paying more. The article speculates this could be due to hopes for a secret bonus card, automated bots, or individuals opting for a higher price to leave cheaper options for others. Orcs & Crafts Zine, a Kickstarter project focused on miniature terrain building rather than a game itself. The zine aims to teach the basics of creating miniature worlds, with the first 60-page issue focusing on cardboard foundations and requiring only basic tools like scissors and a hobby knife. The project emphasizes accessibility, creative control, and using everyday materials. It is supported by a team of “Orc assistants” like Crathar (Chief Crafting Officer for advanced tips), Painscar (focused on safety), and Bob (providing basic tips). The zine includes planning guides, technique breakdowns (e.g., wood planks, hills), step-by-step building instructions (e.g., Simple Cardboard Tree, Ruined Gnomish Distillery), and even unique movie recommendations from Martin for background crafting entertainment. #crowsrpg #undergoblin #eeldenring #orcsandcrafts Undergoblin Heist – 5e D&D (Hardcover) – Hit Point Press https://hitpointpress.com/products/under-goblin-heist-5e-d-d-hardcover Orcs and Crafts Zine: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/game-machinery/orcs-crafts-zine Call of Cthulhu Bundle: https://humblebundleinc.sjv.io/Xmz13G Free Guild Ball Starter Set: https://steamforged.com/products/guild-ball-starter-kit Warmachine on MyMiniFactory: https://mmf.io/upturned Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support us by Shopping at Miniature Market (afilliate link): https://miniature-market.sjv.io/K0yj7n Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/

In which John, Jess, Ben, and their guest, James Pozenel, hack into Netcrawl, a cyberdungeon crawl in the style of Dungeon Crawl Classics. Here the whole party enters the digital fray, not just the netrunner or cybermancer. Using a flexible skill system that gives every character a chance to make an impact, our intrepid hosts dive into a server to encounter techno-spiders and the Core Queen dragon. In this week's episode, we chat with Simon about using soda cans and pizza boxes as terrain, the shift away from miniatures in TTRPGs, and the incompatibility of the Seattle real estate market with large-scale miniatures combat. Plus, Jake gets grumpy about indie TTRPG marketing. Simon (whom we met at OrcaCon) owns Strix Publishing and runs the Brush Wielders Union and the associated podcast as well as a Horus Heresy fan podcast. He has a ton of experience in TTRPG publishing, including work on Warmachine, Hordes, Iron Kingdoms 2e, Eclipse Phase, The Hammer and the Stake, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium and Unhallowed Metropolis. As a result, this conversation goes very far afield of our original plan to talk about minis, because Simon really has such a depth of experience. We wound up chatting about folk knowledge and traditions in popular games, the history of D&D's status as a cultural juggernaut, and the extremely nineties television show Kindred: the Embraced. Here are those stats on the most common systems played on Roll20, in case you were wondering. Some previous Campaign Spotlight episodes come up in this conversation:Sam talked about some very cool 3D combat terrainJesse used the Dune: Adventures in the Imperium system for his campaignIn this Dungeon Lore episode we talked about Chainmail and the miniatures combat systems that led to D&DIn this Dungeon Lore episode we talked about some of the business practices that ultimately sank TSR.In this Dungeon Lore episode we talked about the rise of actual plays and their impact on home TTRPG campaigns.Simon also discusses some fun rulesets:Dungeon Crawl Classics (not a minis combat system, but a fun OSR TTRPG)Necromunda (a very miniatures-intensive Warhammer system)Strength and Honour (a wargame system for battles in the ancient world)Test of Honour (a miniatures system focusing on samurai skirmish combat)After we recorded this interview, Simon sent us some pictures of the incredible minis he's painted! It's here at last! And we spared no expense, or cut no corner, to deliver the bedazzling finale of our playthrough of the classic TSR giants module, "The Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" by Gary Gygax. There's fire! Explosions! Giants! Expansve, painstakingly detailed sets that would rival "Ben Hur"! Orcs! Dancing! Fire! Fire! Fire! Audio only, so you'll have to take our word for it. But take our word for it.
The manse continues to surprise our adventurers at every turn. Behind each door a deadly challenge, a violent foe, or more questions about what this place really is. But after dealing with the bizarre scrying pool and the monsters that protected it, something has changed. A rumbling deep beneath the twisting floors signals doom for the party. Will they find their way out alive? Find out as we conclude The Grinding Keep, an adventure written by Marc Bruner for DCC Day 2024. Starring Jeff Daniel Schroeder
On the SIXth day of the SIXth month, we drop the SIXth (and clearly most cursed) installment of our DCC playthrough of Gary Gygax's classic giants module. Repent after listening!
The party has found that the manse defies logic, with rooms twisting and warping before their very eyes. And now, their former Host charges them with a dagger, preparing them to meet the Master of the keep. How will they survive this mansion of nightmares? Find out as we continue The Grinding Keep, an adventure written by Marc Bruner for DCC Day 2024. Starring Jeff Daniel Schroeder
After making a pact with a Chaos God, the party finds themselves on a quest to return an artifact known as the Enduring Light, which they are told is being held in a remote keep in the wilderness. Yet upon arrival to the manse, something seems off. And things don't get any better when they step across the threshold. We begin The Grinding Keep, an adventure written by Marc Bruner for DCC Day 2024. Starring Jeff Daniel Schroeder
In which John, Ben, and Jess roll up characters for three different OSR systems: Dungeon Crawl Classics, Dolmenwood, and Shadowdark, bringing Sindar, Hrannick, and Korv to life. Goodman Games, creators of Dungeon Crawl Classics are now endeavoring to re-release The City State of the Invincible Overlord -- a legendary module which shaped Dungeons and Dragons and TTRPGs. The largest battle we've ever undertaken continues, in part four of our playthrough of the classic TSR giants module.
Part 3 of our level 4 DCC playthrough of Gary Gygax's original 1978 D&D giants adventure. It's starting to get a little epic around here.
By the grace of Rance and Clint Howard, the party ventures deeper into the steading of the hill giants. Will they be any match for what horrors lie inside? Can they withstand Rob's terrible puns? Find out as we continue our DCC playthrough of Gary Gygax's D&D classic.
Join us as we play the very first Dungeons & Dragons adventure module published by TSR way back in 1978. What could be more fun? Why, playing it as a level 4 DCC adventure, of course! Other podcasts may be slicker, younger and prettier than us. But what other TTRPG actual play is going to teach you about the works of Rance and Clint Howard?
We take a break from Hommlet with a jaunt underground in Harley Stroh's level 3 DCC adventure. It's only six pages long! How hard can it be?
Real Life: Steven's been back at the forge for Blacksmithing Class #2, where Ben learned the existence of trivets (yes, those little metal stands your grandma probably had). Meanwhile, babysitting round two for Steven's nephew went... well, let's just say he survived. Rainy days are not great for four-year-olds. On the tabletop front, we got into Dungeon Crawl Classics (aka the ‘70s cranked up to 11) with its insane artwork and a spell system that just loves making you regret your choices. Then there's Mutant Crawl Classics, which, well... we didn't get as far, but you know it's gotta be weird and radioactive. Ben, on the other hand, had feedback about last week's discussion of Mothership. Devon's character was from Planet America, and Ben played Rodney McKay, based on our favorite Grumpy Scientist from Stargate: Atlantis. Also, Ben's dog has bladder problems (is it Cushing's disease?), and he's making custom Mac Mini decals that look like that Joy Division album cover that you probably know from Hot Topic t-shirts. Future or Now: Since Devon's not here, let's talk about video games. Dragonsweeper is Minesweeper meets dungeon crawler, and it's addictive as heck. Play it for free on the web at one of these two links: https://dragonsweeper.com/New-Dragonsweeper-Version https://danielben.itch.io/dragonsweeper Also, can we finally talk about UFO 50, that game that combines 50 indie games in one, all looking like they're straight out of the 80s? Ben waxes on and on about Party House: a deckbuilding game where you gather as many guests as you can to throw a huge party, but don't let it get out of hand! If it was released separately, it'd probably have been game of the year. https://ufo50.miraheze.org/wiki/Party_House Paper, Watch Out! Scientists in Japan are making biohybrid hands with lab-grown muscle tissue. These “MuMuTAs” are a step toward prosthetics and robots that mimic real muscle movement. Read more about it here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/02/250212151423.htm This reminded Ben of a love poem he wrote recently: Colonies: https://ben.lawless.rocks/poetry/colonies/ “Book Club”: This week: Burning Chrome by William Gibson, specifically the titular story in the collection that brought us cyberpunk classics like Johnny Mnemonic. Next week: Billennium by J.G. Ballard — a 1962 dystopian tale of extreme overpopulation, where people live in minuscule rooms in overcrowded cities. Sounds like fun, right?
