In the middle of the 70's horse racing was huge, and in the middle of it all in 1975 was Hall of Fame jockey Jacinto Vasquez who had the pleasure of riding some of the greatest horses of that era. And on May 12, 1975, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as he helped guide Foolish Pleasure to victory in the Kentucky Derby. The great horse had lost but once entering the race at Churchill Downs, yet some didn't think he could handle the distance. They were wrong. Vasquez knew he had the right horse at the right time to win his first Derby. The same held true 5 years later, when aboard Genuine Risk, he won it again. Only one of three fillies to win the Derby ever and the first since Regret in 1915! Despite being on the Kentucky Derby winner, Vasquez would get off of Foolish Pleasure to mount another great horse and another filly later that summer of '75 when he rode Ruffian in a match race against Pleasure. One of the greatest horses ever, Ruffian had been in 10 races since May of 1974… and won all of them… in fact, in all 10 races, she won wire-to-wire. That's right, she never trailed in a race. And in the 8 stakes races she entered, she set new stakes records in all 8 of them. But on that summer day at Belmont Park against Foolish Pleasure, Ruffian broke down, breaking two bones in her right foreleg. After surgery, the great thoroughbred came out of anesthesia and reacted poorly. She had to be put down. Vasquez and the racing world mourned the loss of one of the top 100 American horses of the 20th century. With over 5,200 wins, and a member of the United States Racing Hall of Fame since 1998, Vasquez is one of the all-time greats, but he tells us on the Past Our Prime podcast, that great horses make great jockeys and he would know. He also recounts the three times he beat Secretariat… the only jockey to ever beat the iconic horse three times. And he tells us why he was suspended from racing for a year and how to this day he vehemently denies the charges that were brought up against him. Vasquez is one of the all-time greats and at 81 years old, you can hear the competitive fire still burn inside of him when he recounts his rides on Pleasure, Ruffian and Forego or his battles with other great jockey's of his time such as Angel Cordero and Willie Shoemaker. Campaigned by Jon Ebbert's Blue Rose Farm and trained by Jena Antonucci, Arcangelo has remained undefeated since breaking his maiden in March, 2023 in a 1-mile Gulfstream Park MSW by 3 1/2 lengths.He prevailed in the G3 Peter Pan S. at Belmont Park, edging out favorite Bishops Bay, earning a 97 Beyer in his stakes debut. He then followed in the path of A. P. Indy and Tonalist by annexing the G1 Belmont Stakes defeating five G1 winners, including Champion Two-Year-Old Forte. Arcangelo earned a 102 Beyer - the highest of the year for a three-year-old in the country at 1 1/2 miles on dirt. Arcangelo followed up his break-out performance in the Belmont with a win in the G1 Travers at Saratoga, just like his sire Arrogate, boosting his career earnings to $1,754,900. Defeating both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners, he earned a 105 Beyer, the top figure for a three-year-old at 1 1/4 miles. This performance propelled him to being naming Eclipse Champion Three-Year-Old Male.By Champion Arrogate, the sire of 5 G1 winners in his brief career at stud. His dam Modeling, by Tapit, was a $2.85 million Keeneland November broodmare purchase. Modeling is a half-sister to Streaming, winner of the G1 Hollywood Starlet S. She hails from the family of Broodmare of the Year and prolific producer Better Than Honour, the dam of back-to-back Belmont winners Rags to Riches and Jazil.(UPDATED FEB 1, 2025)

For those who graduated from public high school, posthumously means he did so while being dead. Apparently Hayes suffered a fatal heart attack during the race, but he stayed on top of the horse right through to the finish… of the race, that is.  And, well… through to his own finish too...

Two-time NHC Tour winner Kevin Costello, former NHC champions Scott Harrison and Paul Matties and economics professor and horse owner Marshall Gramm take part in the annual horseplayers roundtable. They discuss last weekend's tote breakdown that impacted the Tampa Bay Derby, the latest trends and concerns with computer-assisted wagering and why it is that Chicago players have done so well in the NHC. Steve Thomas is the General Manager at Belmont Park in San Diego, CA.  Steve's background includes working in oil fields in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico until he decided to move back to his hometown of San Diego in 2017.  At that time, Belmont Park had recently been acquired by a real estate developer who had a new vision for the park, which was falling into disrepair.  After identifying the challenges needed to make necessary improvements, he took on the role of Maintenance Manager and immediately implemented enhancements.  Not long after, he approached the park's ownership with the interest of becoming General Manager.  Since becoming GM in 2018, Steve's main focus has been on unification, which included acquiring all of the concessions operators on the property and bringing them all under one roof.  In this interview, Steve talks about lessons from the oil field, guest centricity, and no paper signs.   Lessons from the oil field "Don't be bitter about spending a little more time in a role. Have patience." Steve became a Floorhand for a drilling company after finding them at a recruiting event and learned the job from the lowest position in the ranks.  After being passed up for a promotion to Driller a year later, Steve was initially disappointed, but he took the next seven to eight months to fully prepare himself for the role.  When he got it, his proficiency was even higher than those who had been drilling for years.  Steve stresses that patience pays off when it comes to growing in your career. As a Driller, Steve says he gained valuable leadership lessons that translated into his role today at Belmont Park.  When he was promoted to Driller, he found that he was doing the majority of the work because he could get it done better and quicker than anyone else, until he realized that this was the wrong approach.  Instead, when he began learning more about what his team member's best skill sets were, coaching, and operating as a team, their productivity went up substantially. Guest centricity "Everything that we do is with the guest in mind." Because of the number of businesses that operated at Belmont Park, Steve said that walking into the park felt more like walking into a strip mall than an amusement park.  When your ticket allows you certain attractions but not others, employees are wearing different uniforms, and information is difficult to find, it creates a confusing experience that Steve described as fragmented and broken.  By working to acquire all of the concessionaires, not only was it a good business decision, it made for a much smoother guest experience. When describing his guest experience philosophy, Steve says that his focus is to ask, “What is that extra thing?” at every touchpoint in the park.  From purchasing tickets to dining in the restaurants, Steve describes the concept of guest centricity of exceeding expectations and that everything that the park does is with the guest in mind. No paper signs "There's a lack of care for the guest when there's a crooked paper sign taped to a window." When comparing Belmont Park to Disneyland, Steve stresses that they can't compete on the size of the park or the number of rides, but they can compete on guest experience.  And part of the guest experience strategy is that there are no paper signs in the parks due to the lack of care that it shows to the guest. The standard of no paper signs is literal, but also represents the overarching standard.  To be considered world-class, you can't have paper signs taped to a window.  This same standard extends into never walking past a piece of trash without picking it up, which helps to align Belmont Park's definition of world-class.   Having opened in 1925, Belmont Park will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025.  While the plans are still coming together at the time of this interview, Steve is excited to be a part of the centennial celebration and is excited to rally the team and acknowledge this historic milestone.
