Our conversation this week is with Tom Lix — founder & CEO of Cleveland Whiskey — on pushing the boundaries of convention while building on tradition to artfully blend science with craft to create unique award-winning Whiskey.Tom is a serial entrepreneur — prior to founding Cleveland Whiskey, he founded Public Interactive which he sold to National Public Radio, he served as President/COO of Yankelovich Partners, and as you'll hear later, Tom has always been a tinkerer through and through.Lix spent some formative years in the US Navy where in addition to some early bootleg distilling; he was cross-trained in nuclear physics and thermodynamics along with seawater/freshwater distillation. A college dropout who hitchhiked across the country fought forest fires in Alaska at the age of 17, and founded the first University-sponsored Motorcycle Club in America. He later earned his Doctorate in Business from Boston University.Originally published as episode #21 back in April of 2021, this conversation with Tom Lix is one of my personal favorites! Tom is a deep eloquent orator, with an eclectic entrepreneurial background, and is one of the best and most engaging storytellers I know, making for one of the most entertaining conversations so far! Cleveland Whiskey continues to push the boundaries of Whiskey's conventions as they've racked up award after award since our original recording and break ground on their new distillery and restaurant planned at the Flats South Bank in the Malcom Building, home to the Consolidated Fruit Auction company more than 100 years ago. Tune in for a spirited conversation!-----This episode is brought to you by Impact Architects and Ninety. When it comes to bourbon, Cleveland Whiskey's Tom Lix is a disrupter. Lix talked with The Landscape about Cleveland Whiskey's innovative approach to producing bourbon, which has caused purists to raise their eyebrows -- but customers to order another round. Lix also shared some thoughts on thinking outside the box (bottle?), how he was able to get his products on shelves so quickly, and how supportive Northeast Ohio has been when it comes to trying something new.

Have you ever wondered why whiskey is aged in oak wooden barrels? It's not originally because of the flavor. An Ohio distillery contends it was simply because barrels were the storage device of the day. The flavor the whiskey got was merely a consequence. Cleveland Whiskey, believes it's a technology company first and distillery second. We sat down with Tom Lix, founder and CEO of Cleveland Whiskey to learn more about the award winning whiskey they're making. Support the show (http://www.RackHouseWhiskeyClub.com)

Tom describes how his colourful early career led to a fascination with distilling and eventually to the founding of Cleveland Whiskey Co, which he describes as "more of a technology company than a craft distiller". Tom also clarifies what legal restrictions he operates under, details his battles with the Scotch Whisky Association and talks about fermenting for astronauts! We also welcome another guest to our "Desert Island" where they can choose to bring only one drink with them. Tom Lix, founder and CEO of Cleveland Whiskey, a company that uses a proprietary process to accelerate the aging of whiskey from 6-12 years to 24 hours. Cleveland Whiskey also creates a series of unique finishes with woods such as Apple Wood, Honey Locust Wood, and Hickory Wood not traditionally used for barrel production. Needless to say, the startup is pushing the boundaries of traditional whiskey; Cleveland Whiskey is well into the commercialization process with distribution agreements in most of Europe as well as distribution in Japan and China. Tom directed the Center for Entrepreneurship and taught at Lake Erie College; he was also vice president of the Cleveland Lakefront Development Corporation before coming up with an idea to develop a patented technology that dramatically speeds up the process of aged whiskey. He earned a doctorate in marketing management at Boston University. And more importantly, he learned to make spirits during his Navy days.
