That's the guiding principle behind Pivotal Health, which is reinventing healthcare delivery by bringing medical care directly to patients' homes, dorms or offices. It's not just convenient—it's a better way to care.Sal Braico, Co-Founder and CEO of Pivotal Health, explained in today's episode how the company is reviving the once-common practice of house calls using technology and a physician-led team of experienced nurse practitioners and physician assistants. “We are improving [access] by bringing the house call back,” Sal said. “We're leveraging tech to bring the house call back.”The results speak for themselves. By avoiding long wait times and exposure to illnesses in urgent care or emergency rooms, patients receive focused, uninterrupted attention from providers. This personalized care environment also allows patients to open up about mental health issues that might otherwise go unaddressed.Sal shared, “One of the things that we've seen is that oftentimes patients are able to bring up issues about mental health because they're more comfortable in their own house.” That comfort leads to better outcomes, deeper care and a more trusting relationship between provider and patient. It's not just a feel-good story. Pivotal Health is scaling rapidly by delivering real value. From just one employer partner a year ago to now serving over 45 companies and more than 3,000 employees, the company's direct care model is gaining traction.“If we're able to always do the best thing for the patient, then the money and the profits, they will come,” Sal emphasized.Pivotal Health is currently raising funds via a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. As Sal explained, patients themselves sparked the idea by asking how they could invest. Now they can.Visit wefunder.com/pivotalhealth or use the shortcut s4g.biz/Pivotal to learn more. Funds from the campaign will help expand the service from three metro areas in Wisconsin to more cities across the country.Today's episode shows that innovation often means returning to ideas that once worked well. With Pivotal Health, Sal and his team are proving that house calls, enhanced by technology, can transform modern healthcare. And thanks to crowdfunding, the very people who benefit most can help power its growth.tl;dr:Sal Braico is using technology to revive house calls, making healthcare more personal and accessible.Pivotal Health uses nurse practitioners and physician assistants to deliver efficient, high-quality care.Personalized visits in comfortable environments help patients discuss mental health and receive better overall care.Sal demonstrates how impact and profitability align, with strong growth driven by patient and employer value.A Wefunder campaign enables patients and supporters to invest in expanding Pivotal Health's innovative model. How to Develop Relentless Persistence As a SuperpowerSal Braico says his superpower is simple: "I don't quit." In today's episode, Sal, the CEO and Co-Founder of Pivotal Health, shared how an unwavering determination has carried him and his team through countless challenges."It doesn't matter what the problem is, what the issue is. I just don't quit," Sal said. Inspired by his immigrant parents, who modeled tireless dedication to work without complaint, he developed a mindset rooted in grit and consistency. "They just put their heads down, and they just worked," Sal explained. "That's what they showed me."One vivid example of Sal's persistence came when Change Health, Pivotal Health's primary claims processor, was hacked. Payments stopped. Claims couldn't be submitted. The company faced a crisis. Cash flow dried up, and making payroll became difficult. But quitting was never an option. “We just didn't quit,” he said. Sal communicated openly with his team, secured a little more time, and eventually stabilized the business. The incident led to a key pivot away from insurance, helping the company emerge stronger.Sal offered several insights for building this kind of resilience:Keep a level mindset. Things are never as bad—or as good—as they seem.Take care of physical health. Fitness builds stamina to endure tough times.Protect mental health. Use tools like therapy or meditation to maintain perspective.Avoid emotional overreaction. Emotional regulation helps sustain long-term focus and energy.By following Sal's example and advice, you can make persistence a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Timekeeping and billing have long been pain points for lawyers, but today's guest, Adrian Parlow, is working to change that. As the co-founder and CEO of PointOne, he's leveraging AI to automate time tracking and bill review, helping law firms capture more revenue while reducing administrative burdens. Adrian's path to legal tech began in startup law. After beginning his career at Fenwick & West, he transitioned to the business side as general counsel at Wefunder, an online crowdfunding platform for startups. That experience sparked his interest in innovation and led him to launch PointOne, where he and his team are helping firms rethink their approach to timekeeping and billing in the AI era. Adrian joins us to talk about tackling the challenge of timekeeping, his journey from lawyer to entrepreneur, how PointOne is transforming billing practices, and why legal organizations are re-evaluating their stance on AI and innovation. This episode of Professor Kimya's class focuses on reducing Black poverty by emphasizing individual and family financial planning. The lecture advocates for realistic financial plans, legitimate financial advice from authorized planners, and consideration of a financial plan's impact on future generations. **It stresses the importance of understanding and utilizing tax-funded services instead of viewing them as government handouts. Professor Kimya encourages informed voting, contributing to Black safety nets, and building financial literacy from a young age. The class highlights the need for Black people to develop their own cultural concepts and economic power, drawing inspiration from figures like Harold Cruz. It encourages integrating different approaches to achieve collective advancement and self-reliance while responsibly utilizing available resources.Harold Crusehttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hu97GJJgMWbdfZw6fb33wW57BhReENYIWilliam Julius Wilsonhttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Dra3RpL4laiCco5O6g90cL3Arr0NHknI Here are some of the key highlights from the video:* **Financial Planning and Advice**: * It's important to have a realistic financial plan that includes achievable goals. * Financial advice should be legitimate and from authorized sources, such as a financial planner. Be wary of scams, especially those targeting the Black community. * Consider how financial decisions impact the family, both positively and negatively, and plan ahead for emergencies. * Financial literacy and planning should be taught across generations.* **Seeking Professional Guidance**: * The video recommends seeking a financial advisor as soon as one has an income, even if it's not substantial. * A financial advisor can provide personalized advice and create a financial plan tailored to individual circumstances.* **Utilizing Available Resources**: * Take advantage of free financial planning classes and programs offered by public libraries, community colleges, and Black organizations. * **Utilize tax-funded services and resources**, remembering that these are not "government handouts" but services paid for through taxes.* **Understanding Wealth Building**: * Wealth building doesn't necessarily mean becoming a millionaire; it means saving more than you spend and building up savings and investments over time. * Be aware of cash flow planning, retirement income, Social Security benefits, disability insurance, living wills, and life insurance.* **Collective and Societal Level Strategies**: * Support Black organizations and institutions, but be aware that many receive government funding, which may influence their activities. * Be an informed voter, looking beyond popularity and jargon, and consider voting across party lines. * Contribute to Black community safety nets and preventive measures, focusing on building money, health resources, and school resources together while avoiding paranoia.* **Drawing on Black Intellectualism and History**: * The video references Harold Cruz's cooperative plan, which drew from W.E.B. Du Bois's cooperative economic plan.Interested in sponsoring the channel? #richmondva #blackbank #maggielenawalker In 1903, Maggie Lena Walker was the first Black woman to charter an American bank and become its Bank President... An astounding accomplishment for a Black Woman in the early 1900s. The lesson highlights five key integrated Black ideas exemplified by Walker, emphasizing the importance of independent thought, collaborative leadership, and practical application of concepts for Black advancement.Professor Kimya outlined five key lessons derived from the work of Maggie Lena Walker that are still pertinent for Black people today. These are presented as interconnected "integrated black ideas".Firstly, Walker emphasized the critical need for Black people to develop their own concepts and theories and to actively implement them through strategies and actions to achieve tangible results. She serves as an example of someone who moved beyond abstract ideas to create real-world change.Secondly, Walker's work underscored the importance of collaborative leadership and the collective development of knowledge. This challenges individualistic approaches and highlights the power of working together and leveraging available resources for communal advancement.Thirdly, Walker demonstrated the significance of establishing economic development initiatives within the Black community. Her involvement in banking, newspapers, and retail showcased a strategy of connecting these sectors to foster economic empowerment.Fourthly, Walker's leadership within the Independent Order of St. Luke and her participation in secret societies illustrated the vital role of community organizations and networking in facilitating social and economic progress for Black people. These networks provided essential support and opportunities. Finally, Walker's later engagement with Disability Services emphasized the importance of addressing the diverse needs present within the Black community, ensuring that efforts for advancement are inclusive of all members. Alex Wright-Gladstein was one of the first people I interviewed when I launched Invested in Climate nearly 3 years ago. Our conversation has stuck in my mind over the years as her company, Sphere, offers one of the most impactful actions individuals can take to address climate change. The action is really simple: Moving our savings out of fossil fuel companies. In the United States, fossil fuels are included by default in retirement savings accounts. If you have a 401(k), IRA, or pension, you are almost certainly supporting the fossil fuel industry. And we're not talking about chump change: About 20% of the fossil fuel market cap is derived from 401(k)s and IRA investments. Sphere makes it easy for people and companies to move retirement savings away from fossil fuels. They're currently raising money through a WeFunder crowdfunding campaign, so I thought it was a perfect time to catch up with Alex and hear about Sphere's progress. Full disclosure: I'm a Sphere investor and soon-to-be customer, but I should say clearly - nothing in this episode should be considered investment advice and is just for informational purposes. I hope this conversation pushes your thinking in a helpful way. I've applied that to the problems I see in the world that I feel need solving.Anxiety is one of the biggest mental health challenges of our time, affecting millions of people worldwide. Yet, despite the availability of treatments, many individuals hesitate to seek help due to stigma, cost, or lack of accessibility. Raj Amin, CEO and Co-Founder of Arcade Therapeutics, is tackling this problem by harnessing the power of gaming to provide evidence-based anxiety relief."One of the biggest challenges to engaging people is really the format of that engagement," Raj explained. "It's a big obstacle to get people into therapy. A lot of people haven't tried therapy. There's a lot of stigma associated with it. So we've got to figure out ways to give them an on-ramp to begin self-care. And that's really where gaming comes in."Arcade Therapeutics has developed a mobile game that integrates a psychological technique proven to reduce anxiety symptoms. Rather than requiring users to commit to therapy or medication right away, this game offers a more accessible and engaging way to start managing anxiety. "Two-thirds of Americans play games," Raj noted. "What if you could actually embed a psychological technique into the game that is proven to reduce anxiety symptoms? That's what we've done at Arcade."The company's business model relies on scientific validation, with research-backed methods that have undergone clinical trials funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This has positioned Arcade Therapeutics to be recognized as a digital therapeutic—a form of software-as-medicine. As a result, its products can be prescribed by doctors and reimbursed by insurance providers. With the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rolling out new billing codes for digital mental health treatments starting in 2025, the company is poised for rapid growth.Arcade Therapeutics is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder, allowing everyday investors to support this innovative approach to mental health care. "We need to democratize the way that early-stage companies get built," Raj said. "Crowdfunding allows us to set the stage for a future where companies can be supported by the people who believe in them, including therapists and doctors who see the value in what we're building."Investors and mental health advocates interested in learning more can visit s4g.biz/AT to support Arcade Therapeutics' mission. By blending science with gaming, Raj and his team are making mental health support more engaging, accessible, and effective.tl;dr:* Raj Amin, CEO of Arcade Therapeutics, explains how gaming can be leveraged to treat anxiety.* Arcade Therapeutics' mobile game integrates a psychological technique clinically proven to reduce anxiety.* The company's business model relies on digital therapeutics, enabling insurance reimbursement for mental health treatments.* Raj discusses his superpower, creative problem-solving, and how it has shaped his career.* He shares actionable tips on fostering creativity, including context-switching and learning from diverse fields. How to Develop Creative Problem Solving As a SuperpowerRaj Amin's superpower is creative problem-solving. Throughout his career, Raj has applied his ability to connect different ideas and industries to create impactful solutions. "I would say that I have a creative side in how I think about new businesses," he shared in today's episode. "And I think I've applied that to the problems that I see in the world that I feel need solving."An illustrative example of Raj's superpower is his work with Arcade Therapeutics. Recognizing the stigma and barriers to mental health treatment, he saw an opportunity to use gaming—something millions of people engage with daily—as a platform for delivering anxiety-reducing therapies. "Gaming is something that people are already doing and it's engaging, but we can now apply that in a way that helps bring down stigma and improve access to earlier treatments for mental health," he explained. To develop creative problem-solving as a personal strength, Raj suggests:* Engage in context switching – "I might grab a guitar, play a song for 10 minutes, and then shift to a business challenge. The intersections between different activities often lead to new ideas."* Expose yourself to diverse fields – "Dive into new subjects. For instance, I explored AI and then thought about how it could be applied to mental health."* Solve problems you personally experience – "I created a mini AI-driven coach for myself to see how technology could be leveraged for mental wellness."By following Raj Amin's example and advice, you can make creative problem-solving a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Marcia Dawood, an experienced investor and advocate for small business capital formation, is on a mission to change that perception. In today's episode, she shared how equity crowdfunding has made it possible for anyone to invest in startups and drive meaningful change.Marcia has been an angel investor for over a decade and served as chair of the Angel Capital Association. She now sits on the Securities and Exchange Commission's Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee, working to ensure small businesses have a voice in regulatory decisions.During our conversation, she reflected on the transformative power of equity crowdfunding. "Back in 2016, when the SEC changed the rules, it became possible for anyone to invest in startups for as little as $50," she said. "But not enough people know about it. The potential for impact is enormous."Marcia's journey into angel investing began with a simple invitation to an investor meeting. At first, she assumed it was a world reserved for the rich and well-connected. But as she listened to entrepreneurs share their visions for changing the world, she realized she could be part of it. “I thought, ‘Where have I been?' I had no idea this was happening,” she recalled. “I started to see how powerful investing could be as a force for good.”Today, Marcia is committed to making investing more inclusive. She highlights that platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine have made startup investing transparent and accessible. "Everything is disclosed on the platform—CEOs can't have side conversations with select investors. That levels the playing field," she explained. One of her biggest concerns is the lack of funding for women-led startups. "Women make up about half the population, but they receive just two to three percent of venture funding. That has to change," she emphasized. By encouraging more people—especially women—to invest, Marcia believes equity crowdfunding can reshape the entrepreneurial landscape. For those hesitant to take the leap into impact investing, her advice is simple: start by observing. "Take your time, look around, and learn. See which companies align with your values. Then, when you're ready, take that first step."Marcia's message is clear: investing isn't just about financial returns—it's about fueling innovation and creating a better world. By lowering barriers to entry, equity crowdfunding is opening the doors for everyone to be part of that change.tl;dr:* Marcia Dawood discusses how equity crowdfunding is expanding access to capital for underrepresented founders and everyday investors.* She shares her journey into angel investing and how it has become a powerful tool for impact.* Marcia highlights the importance of transparency and accessibility in platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine.* She explains the need for more investment in women-led startups and the potential for crowdfunding to bridge the gap.* Marcia identifies decisiveness and resourcefulness as her superpowers, offering actionable tips for making better decisions and solving problems efficiently. How to Develop Decisiveness and Resourcefulness As a SuperpowerMarcia Dawood has honed two superpowers that have propelled her success: decisiveness and resourcefulness. "I've had people tell me that if they were in a crisis, they'd want to stand next to me," she said in today's episode. Whether in angel investing, business, or personal life, she has built a reputation for making quick, confident decisions and creatively solving problems. One of the most powerful examples of her decisiveness came during the pandemic. She shared the story of JoyLux, a startup whose CEO immediately pivoted when faced with financial uncertainty. Instead of waiting for conditions to improve, the company quickly adjusted its strategy, engaged investors, and ensured financial stability. "That kind of decisiveness can be the difference between survival and failure," Marcia explained. For those looking to develop decisiveness, Marcia offers practical advice:* Identify the Core Decision – Clarify what needs to be decided and focus on key factors.* Seek Input, but Don't Overanalyze – Consult trusted sources, but avoid analysis paralysis.* Take Ownership – Make a choice and commit to it, rather than second-guessing.* Learn from Decisions – Reflect on past choices to improve future decision-making.* Act with Confidence – Recognize that no decision is perfect, but moving forward is better than inaction.By following Marcia's example and advice, you can make decisiveness and resourcefulness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make them a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. On today's episode of Superpowers for Good, Jonathan shared how his team is reshaping cancer testing and leveraging equity crowdfunding to align with their mission. The company's flagship product, OneTest, offers multi-cancer early detection for as little as $200—far below the cost of competing tests. Recently, they introduced a convenient home collection option, allowing people to collect samples themselves, bypassing painful and time-consuming traditional blood draws. “We believe that cancer testing should not just be for the so-called worried rich. It should be for everybody,” Jonathan said. This philosophy extends to their approach to financing. Jonathan explained, “Just as cancer doesn't discriminate by income, we think cancer testing—and the opportunity to invest in innovations—should be available to all.” The company pioneered equity crowdfunding for biotech, raising $12 million from nearly 8,000 shareholders through Reg CF and Reg A campaigns. Now, they are hosting another offering on WeFunder to continue this democratized model.Jonathan's vision is deeply personal for many. He highlighted how shareholders often become customers and vice versa, strengthening the connection between the company's mission and its community.By focusing on affordability, accessibility, and inclusivity, 20/20 GeneSystems is setting a new standard—not just for cancer detection but also for how groundbreaking medical innovations are funded. Their journey illustrates the powerful impact of aligning purpose with action, offering investors and patients alike a chance to join a life-saving mission.tl;dr:* Jonathan Cohen's company offers one of only two multi-cancer early detection tests available today.* 20/20 GeneSystems' OneTest uses protein biomarkers, providing an affordable alternative to DNA-based diagnostics.* The company's equity crowdfunding campaigns align with its mission of democratizing access to biotech investments.* During the COVID-19 pandemic, 20/20 GeneSystems pivoted quickly to become an early leader in testing.* Jonathan's innovative approach integrates AI and machine learning, modernizing cancer detection and expanding accessibility. How to Develop Creative Thinking As a SuperpowerJonathan Cohen's superpower is creative thinking. As the CEO of 20/20 GeneSystems, Jonathan has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to think outside the box to solve problems and innovate. From spearheading novel approaches to cancer detection to adopting unconventional business strategies, Jonathan's creativity enables him to navigate complex challenges and seize unique opportunities.During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jonathan's creativity shone when he led 20/20 GeneSystems to pivot quickly into COVID testing. With rapid antibody tests sourced from East Asia, the company was among the first in the U.S. to offer any type of COVID test. Later, they transitioned to PCR testing, adapting to market needs. This quick, strategic shift not only supported public health efforts but also drove substantial growth, earning the company a spot on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies.Tips for Developing Creative Thinking:* Pause and Analyze: Avoid following the crowd; take time to assess alternative approaches when everyone else moves in a single direction.* Leverage Technology: Use emerging tools like AI and machine learning to modernize older, proven methods.* Think Holistically: Combine diverse strategies, such as integrating different testing modalities for optimal outcomes, as Jonathan did with protein and DNA testing.* Engage in Public Policy: Collaborate with policymakers to align innovative solutionsBy following Jonathan Cohen's example and advice, you can make creative thinking a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. I think my superpower, if I have one, is that I will lean into things that scare me. I may appear fearless to other people, but I'm not. Trust me! I feel the fear, but I'm never going to run away from fear. I will lean into fear.Author's note: North Carolina, especially Asheville, but also including the broader region, was devastated by Hurricane Helene. Please consider joining me in making a donation to Rotary International, where the funds will be distributed locally where needed and will be matched by the Rotary Foundation. In today's episode, I had the honor of speaking with filmmaker Kerry David, who has dedicated her career to telling impactful stories through her lens. Her latest project, "Open Secret," delves into a difficult subject—systemic child abuse and the corruption that allowed it to continue in North Carolina schools. Despite the heartbreaking topic, Kerry finds and showcases the resilience of individuals fighting to make a difference.Kerry's journey with this project began unexpectedly when she moved to North Carolina. Initially hesitant to take on another heavy subject, Kerry ultimately decided to lend her talents to highlight a story of immense courage. “The film really is about the courage to challenge something in your community that isn't working despite this being detrimental potentially to your own self,” she shared. What makes this project truly unique is Kerry's decision to raise funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. This approach allows people from all over the country to participate in the movement against abuse in schools. “Allowing people everywhere to invest in this film is a way of helping to maximize your audience, maximize the impact, maximize the reach,” she explained. By involving the community, Kerry aims to spark a national conversation and prevent future tragedies. This opportunity to invest in a project that combines social impact with powerful storytelling is rare, and Kerry's passion shines through every frame of her work. If you're moved by this story, consider joining the effort to support change—just as Kerry has done.tl;dr:* In today's episode, Kerry David shared her experience transitioning from working at Paramount Pictures and with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman to starting her own production company and directing impactful documentaries.* Kerry discussed her latest project, "Open Secret," which explores systemic abuse in North Carolina schools and the courage of community members who fought against the corruption that enabled it.* Kerry emphasized her superpower of leaning into fear, recounting a challenging decision to change filming locations for safety during her previous project, demonstrating her ability to balance courage with prudence.* The episode highlighted Kerry's initiative in founding the nonprofit Over and Above Africa, which supports anti-poaching efforts and raises awareness through film.* Kerry explained her decision to use crowdfunding on WeFunder for her latest film to involve and empower communities nationwide to tackle systemic issues beyond North Carolina. How to Develop Leaning into Fear As a SuperpowerKerry's superpower is her ability to “lean into fear.” She doesn't ignore or try to eliminate fear—instead, she faces it head-on, refusing to let it control her decisions or actions. This willingness to confront fear, rather than shy away from it, allows Kerry to push boundaries and take on challenging projects that make a difference in the world. One powerful example of Kerry leaning into fear came during the production of her last film. She and her crew were scheduled to travel from South Africa to Uganda, but just days before, a nearby kidnapping involving three British citizens left her in a state of intense fear for her team's safety. Despite initially wanting to go ahead, Kerry made the difficult decision to pivot and film in Vietnam instead. This decision, rooted in both courage and concern for her crew's safety, ultimately kept them out of harm's way.To develop this superpower, Kerry suggests several actionable strategies:* Evaluate the consequences of not acting. Consider how avoiding a fearful situation could lead to missed opportunities or negative outcomes.* Honor your moral compass. When you know something is the right thing to do, face the fear and act anyway.* Start with small acts of courage. Practicing courage when the stakes are low helps build confidence for larger challenges.* Accept that fear is normal. Understand that feeling fear doesn't mean you're weak—it's an opportunity to show strength by moving forward despite it.By following Kerry's example and advice, you can make leaning into fear a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. “This is ancient knowledge and cutting-edge technology brought together into a product that is helping thousands of people all over the world,” says Anna Gudmundson, the CEO and co-founder of Sensate. She sits down with Alex Raymond in this episode to explore how Sensate is transforming stress management with its innovative technology. Sensate's device combines sound and infrasonic therapy to help users regulate stress and anxiety, and Anna breaks down how it works on a physiological level, particularly its role in improving vagal nerve tone—a key factor in managing stress and enhancing overall well-being. Anna also talks about her current fundraising strategy, highlighting Sensate's crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder. What makes crowdfunding such a powerful tool? It isn't just about raising capital; it's about building a community of engaged users and investors who are truly passionate about Sensate's mission. By opening up investment opportunities to everyday people, Sensate is creating a supportive ecosystem that democratizes access to the company's growth. Anna's approach blends traditional venture capital with crowdfunding, showing how a diverse investor base can be built while driving the company forward. Anna reflects on her personal journey as a leader and the unique challenges of running a wellness startup. How can stress management be woven into the fabric of a company's culture? Anna shares her strategy of fostering mindfulness and resilience within her team, ensuring that Sensate's core mission is reflected not only in their product but also in their workplace. Quotes “I think stress is part of life, but many of us have a bit too much of it. So, it's really important to have a way to self-regulate.” (04:56 | Anna Gudmundson) “The reason this is really helping so many people is that they are feeling calm and relieved. They actually enjoy the experience, which makes it accessible even when people are feeling quite wound up. I think that's a really important part because then we begin to self-care, taking out our Sensate and using it when we need it. It's so important in life to be able to self-regulate during stressful moments.” (05:58 | Anna Gudmundson) “We are accepting money from VCs. We have several VCs that are already in, but we have also tried to allow our customers to invest as well. So our customers, practitioners, partners, and people who really care about the product are able to invest via the SPV on WeFunder under exactly the same terms. That's important, and it is very much part of our ethos.” (14:32 | Anna Gudmundson) “The nice thing about adding crowdfunding is that it democratizes around. Typically, at this stage, when we're at an $18 million valuation, it's usually larger investors who are able to participate. But this allows smaller investors to come in and really diversifies the cap table.” (15:02 | Anna Gudmundson) Links Connect with Anna Gudmundson: Website: https://www.getsensate.com/ Website: https://wefunder.com/sensate Connect with Alex Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/afraymond/ Website: https://amplifyam.com/ HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. And so that's something that has served me well, both in my past corporate life and then also in running a business. I think that being a good problem solver will take you far because there's only so much information you can actually know.On today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the privilege of sitting down with Lindsey Williams, the founder and winemaker of the Urban Wine Co. Lindsey shared the inspiring story of how she's transforming the wine industry, particularly in the South, by introducing diversity and a fresh approach to winemaking.Lindsey didn't take the traditional route to becoming a winemaker. Starting her career as a lawyer and then transitioning to investment banking, she learned firsthand how to handle high-stakes transactions. But a trip to Tuscany sparked her love for winemaking, and that passion evolved into a full-fledged business.Urban Wine Co. isn't just another winery. Lindsey imports grapes from renowned wine regions like California and Oregon and even from overseas, but the magic happens locally in the Carolinas. “We're making our wines here locally, and we're spreading diversity wherever we go,” Lindsey told me during the interview. She explained that her goal is to make the wine world more accessible to people from all walks of life, introducing wine to new communities that might not typically engage with it.Her ambition doesn't stop at making wine approachable—she's aiming to scale the business dramatically. Urban Wine Co. has already secured a partnership with Target, bringing their wines to 44 stores. Lindsey sees this as just the beginning, with a vision to grow the company into a multi-million dollar business.I was inspired by Lindsey's dedication to continuous learning, diversity, and growth. Her journey from corporate America to winemaking is a testament to what can happen when passion meets perseverance. The Urban Wine Company is raising capital from the crowd via Wefunder. I encourage you to visit the site to learn more.tl;dr:* Introduction to the Guest and Business: Lindsey Williams, founder and CEO of Urban Wine Company, discusses her unique winery concept in the South, where they import grapes and use modern fermentation techniques. Her mission is to diversify the wine world and make it more accessible.* Innovative Wine Production: Urban Wine Company imports grapes from various regions, including California, Oregon, and overseas. They're working on producing North Carolina-grown wines, with their process taking place locally in the Lake Norman area.* Lindsey's Background and Transition: Lindsey, a former J.P. Morgan investment banker and lawyer, became passionate about wine during her travels. She studied winemaking and transitioned into the industry, eventually founding Urban Wine Company.* Business Growth and Scaling: The company started small but gained popularity, now partnering with Target for a 44-store deal. They're raising funds to expand production and distribution.* Entrepreneurship and Problem-Solving: Lindsey shares advice for entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of learning, problem-solving, and adapting, particularly during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. How to Develop Problem-Solving As a SuperpowerLindsey's superpower is her ability to solve problems, a skill she developed during her corporate career, and that has been crucial in her entrepreneurial journey. Her approach to problem-solving has helped her navigate challenges ranging from regulatory issues in the wine industry to the everyday tasks of running a business.Lindsey shared how, early in her business journey, she faced the sudden closure of her wine-tasting room due to COVID-19. At the time, her business relied entirely on in-person sales. With no prior experience in online sales, she quickly learned the legal and technical requirements for selling wine online in North Carolina. By working with a vendor to meet compliance standards, Lindsey successfully transitioned her business to online sales, allowing her to continue serving customers during the shutdown.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Learn as much as you can: Every new problem is an opportunity to become an expert. Immerse yourself in the issue, whether it's marketing, sales, or regulatory compliance.* Write things down: Organize your thoughts by writing them down, using lists, sticky notes, or vision boards to map out potential solutions.* Prioritize issues: Focus on the most critical problems first and consider what you can control.* Get everything out in the open: Use tools like whiteboards to visualize all possible solutions before determining your approach.By following Lindsey's example and advice, you can make problem-solving a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. As someone unfamiliar with braids, I was eager to learn how her innovation could change the beauty landscape—and I wasn't disappointed.Lillian Augusta Beauty isn't just about braids. It's about creating "hair without harm," as Jannice put it. Synthetic braiding hair, made from low-grade plastic, not only exacerbates traction alopecia and causes allergic reactions but also contributes to a staggering amount of plastic waste. “Synthetic braiding hair results in about 98 million pounds of plastic just in the U.S. each year,” Jannice explained. Her solution? A sustainable, hypoallergenic, plant-based alternative that eliminates the negative effects of traditional braiding hair while supporting environmental health. “We are offering something that is certified hypoallergenic, ultra-lightweight, and compostable,” she added, describing her product's appeal to both clients and hairstylists alike.Jannice's journey to creating Lillian Augusta Beauty was inspired by her background in environmental science and her commitment to solving community problems. Her story of perseverance, from experimenting with plant fibers during her time at the University of Michigan to launching the product amid a pandemic, is both compelling and inspiring. As we discussed her ongoing WeFunder campaign, I couldn't help but feel excited about the potential impact her work could have—not only for the beauty industry but also for the environment. Jannice is truly making a difference, and I'm thrilled to share her story with you today.tl;dr:* Introduction to the company: Jannice Newson, the CEO of Lillian Augusta Beauty, introduces her company, which produces sustainable, plant-based braiding hair as an alternative to synthetic hair made from plastic.* Problem with synthetic braiding hair: Synthetic hair causes traction alopecia, allergic reactions, and environmental harm, contributing to 98 million pounds of plastic waste annually in the U.S. alone.* Sustainable solution: Lillian Augusta Beauty provides hypoallergenic, ultra-lightweight, and compostable braiding hair that is better for both users and hairstylists while addressing environmental concerns.* Entrepreneurial journey: Jannice, with a background in environmental science, began developing the product at the University of Michigan and overcame challenges to make the product in her basement during the pandemic.* Business outlook and crowdfunding: The company has launched and is running a crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder, aiming to revolutionize the $2.5 billion Black haircare industry and expand into a $100 million business. How to Make Being a Person of Action Your SuperpowerJannice Newson's superpower is her ability to take action, no matter the challenges. She embodies a mindset of determination and resourcefulness, always finding ways to move forward despite obstacles. Whether it's developing innovative solutions or driving her business, she refuses to let circumstances hold her back. This superpower allows her to create opportunities and achieve success even in the face of adversity. An excellent example of Jannice's “person of action” superpower is her journey of creating plant-based hair for Lillian Augusta Beauty. She began by cutting plants with garden shears on her college campus and experimenting with fibers in a basement workshop. Despite making one braid an hour, she persisted through challenges like the pandemic and limited resources, driven by her determination to create a sustainable solution for synthetic braiding hair.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Courage to Fail: Don't be afraid to take risks and fail. Jannice's success comes from her willingness to try, even when the odds seemed against her.* Take Initiative: Look for opportunities where others see obstacles. Jannice took action when others might have stopped.* Complain Constructively: Identify things that bother you and seek solutions. Jannice started Lillian Augusta Beauty because she complained about the negative effects of synthetic hair.* Seek Unexpected Solutions: Explore unconventional resources and partnerships. Jannice found unexpected funding opportunities through avenues like the Regional Transportation Authority.By following Jannice Newson's example and advice, you can make being a person of action a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Based on the Chicago southside, LAB promises hair without harm: no more allergic reactions, heavy braids, or plastic waste from tossing out synthetic braiding hair. LAB was founded by two Black female scientists who started this company because of their own troubles with allergic reactions from synthetic hair. Usually, they'll sit back and say, “Well, if only this existed, we could solve this problem. If only that existed, we could solve this problem.” I'm one of those people who does sit around and say, “if only.” And then I go make it happen. In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the pleasure of welcoming back a dear friend and visionary entrepreneur, Luni Libes, the CEO of Africa Eats. Luni is not only an inspiring leader but also a key investor in the super crowd. His innovative company, Africa Eats, is on a mission to end hunger and poverty in Africa through a unique for-profit model, currently crowdfunding on WeFunder.Luni shared the story of how Africa Eats operates differently from traditional non-profits and government initiatives. "We're jumping in as a for-profit company to lower hunger and to literally pull people out of poverty," Luni explained. This approach allows Africa Eats to scale its impact sustainably and efficiently. The company has invested in over 20 enterprises across Africa, focusing on enhancing the food and agriculture supply chain. Luni highlighted how Africa Eats supports small-scale farmers by aggregating their produce and selling processed food in urban markets, thereby doubling the farmers' incomes. "We've seen it grow from a few hundred farmers to thousands of farmers," Luni shared, illustrating the substantial growth and potential of these ventures. One of the most compelling aspects of Africa Eats is its commitment to reducing food loss. By managing the supply chain professionally, the company cuts down food loss from the typical 30-40% to just 5-6%, making a significant impact on both food security and economic savings for the continent.Luni's vision extends beyond just a few companies. He envisions replicating this model across sub-Saharan Africa, empowering more entrepreneurs and scaling operations to new heights. "We could replicate this. We can either bring this company to the next country over or find another entrepreneur in another part of the continent that wants to do the same thing," Luni said, underscoring the vast potential for growth. The journey of Africa Eats is a testament to the power of combining profit with purpose. As Luni confirmed, "When you are doing good profitably, the good becomes infinite."Watch all of today's episode to hear more about Africa Eats' transformative work and how you can be part of this incredible mission.Tl;dr:Introduction of Luni Libes and Africa Eats:* Luni Libes is an investor and recurring guest on the show, currently involved in a crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder for Africa Eats, a company he founded to combat hunger and poverty in Africa.Mission and Approach of Africa Eats:* Africa Eats operates as a for-profit investment company, supporting over 20 companies in Africa's food and agriculture supply chain. By purchasing from small farmers and reducing food loss, they increase farmer incomes and save costs on food imports.Success and Impact:* Since its inception, Africa Eats has significantly grown its portfolio companies, demonstrating substantial increases in revenue and farmer support. For example, Peniel Meat Processing in Rwanda grew from $30,000 to over a million dollars in revenue, becoming a major chicken processor.Funding Strategy:* Africa Eats combines traditional funding from accredited investors with crowdfunding campaigns to democratize investment opportunities. The goal is to eventually make Africa Eats a public company, allowing widespread participation in its growth and impact.Luni Libes' Superpower and Vision:* Luni's "if only" superpower involves identifying unmet needs and making them a reality. He emphasizes the importance of networking, having built a network of over 21,000 contacts to support his ventures. His next goal is to establish market makers in Africa to enhance liquidity and capital market functionality. How to Develop “If Only” As a SuperpowerLuni's superpower is his ability to take ideas that begin with "if only" and turn them into reality. Rather than waiting for others to solve problems, he identifies needs and takes action to address them, creating impactful solutions.Luni noticed that African stock markets lacked market makers, which are crucial for liquidity and efficient trading. Seeing this gap, he founded the first market maker in Mauritius, developed a business plan, secured funding, and built the necessary technology. This initiative addressed a critical need and demonstrated his proactive approach to solving problems that others overlook.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Identify Needs: Constantly look for gaps and unmet needs in your environment.* Take Initiative: Don't wait for others to act; take the first steps to address the problems you see.* Network Extensively: Build a broad network of contacts and maintain those relationships. This can help you find resources and support when needed.* Document Contacts: Keep a detailed record of people you meet and reach out to them when you need advice or assistance.* Embrace Entrepreneurship: Be willing to start new ventures and projects, even if they seem daunting.* Hire Strategically: Hire individuals who can manage day-to-day operations, allowing you to focus on big-picture visionary work.* Push Beyond Comfort Zones: Even if you're an introvert, push yourself to meet new people and expand your network.By following Luni's example and advice, you can make "if only" a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Kimberly's vision for her company is revolutionary, offering a women-centric rideshare and community mobility service. This innovative concept prioritizes women's safety, comfort, and empowerment, setting it apart from industry giants like Uber and Lyft.Kimberly's journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving her ample time to ensure product-market fit and problem-market fit through extensive customer discovery. After a successful soft launch in 2022 and a hard launch in 2023, Just Her Rideshare has seen impressive growth with thousands of sign-ups, many of which came organically from places they never marketed. One of the most compelling aspects of Just Her Rideshare is its dedication to creating a safe space for women. Kimberly shared, "Nearly 40 percent of women have had to report uncomfortable encounters, including serious sexual crimes and, yes, even murder. So to us, one assault or one woman made to feel uncomfortable is more than enough for us to want to create a safe space for them." This focus on safety and community has resonated deeply with both drivers and riders, leading to a remarkable 78 percent ride repeatability rate. The company also ensures better economic opportunities for its drivers by paying them more generously than other rideshare services. "Currently, we are in early adoption deals where our drivers earn 75 percent of every fare. That is a huge difference from industry standard. But again, we wanted to invest in them because we knew that it would create more loyalty and less churn," Kimberly explained.Kimberly's vision extends beyond Charlotte, North Carolina, with plans to expand into other cities such as Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C. The potential for growth is vast, especially given the significant market of women riders who often avoid ridesharing at night due to safety concerns. As Kimberly and her team continue to build and expand, the future looks incredibly promising for Just Her Rideshare. Their commitment to safety, community, and empowerment not only fills a crucial gap in the ridesharing industry but also paves the way for a more inclusive and secure transportation option for women everywhere.tl;dr:* Introduction and Business Overview: Kimberly Evans is the CEO of Just Her Ride Share, a women-centric ride-sharing and community mobility company prioritizing women's safety, comfort, and empowerment. The company aims to create a safe space for women by employing female drivers and serving female passengers.* Business Development and Growth: Just Her Ride Share started during COVID, allowing time for market research and development. The company launched in 2022 with a soft launch and a hard launch in 2023. It has seen significant traction with thousands of sign-ups, high customer retention, and repeatability rates despite minimal marketing expenditure.* Community and Customer Focus: The company emphasizes community and treats both drivers and customers as part of a supportive network. This approach has resulted in customers willing to pay a premium for the service and drivers receiving 75% of every fare, higher than industry standards, fostering loyalty and reducing churn.* Market Potential and Expansion Plans: The ride-sharing industry has significant market potential, especially among women who often avoid ride-sharing at night due to safety concerns. Just Her Ride Share plans to expand beyond Charlotte, North Carolina, into cities like Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C., driven by word-of-mouth demand.* Capital Raising and Future Vision: Kimberly Evans highlights the importance of raising capital to scale the business, improve market visibility, and expand into new cities. The company is using Wefunder for crowdfunding and aims to increase brand awareness and customer acquisition through strategic investments in marketing. How to Develop Servant Leadership As a SuperpowerKimberly Evans's superpower is her servant leadership. She prioritizes building genuine human connections and fostering a community over transactional interactions. This approach drives her mission to serve others and create a supportive environment for both her team and the users of Just Her Rideshare.Kimberly exemplified her servant leadership by routinely taking time each month to support other entrepreneurs. Despite her own overwhelming schedule, she reaches out to her founder friends to offer assistance, helping them tackle their top challenges. This selfless act not only alleviates her own stress but also strengthens her network and community.Tips for Developing Servant Leadership:* Be Intentional: Set specific goals to serve others regularly, such as monthly or quarterly.* Build Genuine Connections: Focus on creating meaningful relationships rather than transactional ones.* Offer Help Proactively: Reach out to your network to see how you can support them, even with small tasks.* Embrace Vulnerability: Understand that being open and supportive does not mean being weak; set boundaries to prevent exploitation.* Shift Focus: When overwhelmed, redirect your energy to helping others find relief and gain perspective.By following Kimberly Evans's example and advice, you can make servant leadership a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Guillory, the dynamic CEO and founder of Nap Bar. Despite her high-energy demeanor, Khaliah's secret to maintaining such vigor lies in something deceptively simple: napping.Khaliah's journey to creating Nap Bar, the world's first black queer woman-owned luxury sleep suite, is rooted in her personal practice of prioritizing sleep. From her early days in corporate America, she scheduled daily naps, often finding unconventional spots like unused conference rooms or her car to recharge. This habit not only kept her energy levels high but also laid the groundwork for Nap Bar.One striking statistic Khaliah shared is that one out of every two Americans is sleep-deprived. This widespread issue underscored the need for a dedicated space where people could get quality rest. The data is compelling: a NASA study found that a 26-minute nap could increase productivity by up to 34% and alertness by 54%.Khaliah's vision for Nap Bar goes beyond providing a place to sleep. She aims to create eco-friendly, luxury sanctuaries where people can experience restorative sleep, even in the hustle and bustle of an airport. With partnerships with brands like West Elm and Lululemon, Nap Bar offers a home-away-from-home feel, complete with bamboo pajamas and high-quality sleep gear. Her recent success includes securing a ten-year contract at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, showcasing the growing recognition of the importance of sleep. Khaliah's commitment to raising awareness about sleep health extends to her Wefunder campaign, a crowdfunding effort to expand Nap Bar's reach and impact.Khaliah's story is a testament to the power of prioritizing rest and the transformative impact it can have on productivity and overall well-being. As she continues to advocate for sleep health, her journey inspires others to invest in rest, ultimately leading to healthier, more productive lives.Nap Bar is currently raising capital on Wefunder.tl;dr:1. Introduction of Khaliah O. Guillory and Nap Bar: Devin introduces Khaliah O. Guillory, the CEO and founder of Nap Bar. Despite being a very high-energy person, Khaliah emphasizes the importance of sleep and naps for maintaining her energy levels.2. Importance of Napping and Rest: Khaliah highlights the benefits of naps and restorative sleep, citing a NASA study that supports increased productivity and alertness from even short naps. She shares her personal routine of scheduling naps and the impact it has had on her success.3. Founding and Success of Nap Bar: Khaliah explains the inception of Nap Bar and its growth, including securing a ten-year contract to open a luxury sleep suite at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. She discusses the challenges and successes in the journey of establishing Nap Bar, including MVP testing and adapting during the pandemic.4. Expansion and Business Models: Khaliah details various business models for Nap Bar beyond airport rest stops, including partnerships with West Elm and Lululemon and potential collaborations with airlines, hospitals, college campuses, and sporting venues. She mentions efforts to scale Nap Bar through innovative solutions like the Metasnooze virtual reality experience.5. Crowdfunding Campaign on Wefunder: Khaliah talks about the ongoing crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder, emphasizing its importance in making the company visible and accessible even in the context of limited VC funding for black women founders. Devin provides details on how viewers can participate and support the campaign. How to Develop Prioritizing Rest As a SuperpowerKhaliah's superpower is her commitment to prioritizing rest and sleep. By integrating restorative sleep practices into her daily routine, she maintains high energy levels and productivity, enabling her to tackle the demands of entrepreneurship effectively. In 2017, while working in corporate America and facing high stress and long hours, Khaliah decided to change her bedtime habits. She moved her phone away from her bedside to avoid the temptation of checking emails first thing in the morning. This small change significantly improved her mental well-being, demonstrating how prioritizing rest can lead to better performance and a healthier mindset.Tips for Developing the Superpower* Schedule Naps: Make napping a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.* Bedtime Ritual: Establish a consistent bedtime ritual to signal your body it's time to sleep.* Limit Caffeine: Cut out caffeine ten hours before bed to avoid sleep disruptions.* Avoid Late Meals: Refrain from eating or drinking alcohol three hours before bedtime.* Work Cut-Off: Stop working at least two hours before bed to let your brain wind down.* Reduce Screen Time: Avoid screens and social media one hour before bed to minimize blue light exposure.* Skip the Snooze: When your alarm goes off, get up immediately to avoid grogginess from disrupted REM sleep.By following Khaliah's example and advice, you can make prioritizing rest a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Her story is a testament to resilience and the power of community in shaping successful ventures.SamreensVanity is a luxury cosmetic line dedicated to elevating South Asian representation within the beauty industry. Samreen identified a glaring white space: despite 2.1 billion South Asians worldwide, there wasn't a single cosmetic line aimed specifically at their inclusion. She saw this as an opportunity to create something transformative."Our brand is made for the community, and it's founded by the community," Samreen said. This philosophy guided her decision to launch a Wefunder campaign, choosing community-backed investment over traditional venture capital. She wanted her investors to feel a personal connection to the brand, ensuring that their contributions would lead to meaningful impact.Samreen's journey to founding SamreensVanity is as unique as it is inspiring. Despite facing postpartum depression and not having a background in makeup, she taught herself the craft at the age of 30. Her resilience shone through when she applied seven times for a job at a high-end retailer without success. This rejection fueled her determination to create a brand that represents minority women and immigrants like herself. With only nine SKUs, SamreensVanity has already made significant strides. Their innovative dual-ended lipsticks caught the attention of major retailers like QVC and Costco. Now, as part of the Tower 28 Incubator Program, Samreen is gearing up to pitch to top retailers and expand her brand's reach.Looking ahead, Samreen envisions SamreensVanity becoming an international brand, serving markets in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, where there is a growing demand for products that reflect their cultural values and needs.I am continually inspired by entrepreneurs like Samreen, who not only identify opportunities but also create solutions that empower and uplift their communities. SamreensVanity is not just a beauty brand; it's a movement towards greater inclusivity in the industry. In our conversation, Samreen's passion and dedication were palpable. Her vision for the future of SamreensVanity is bright, and I have no doubt that she will continue to break barriers and set new standards in the beauty industry.tl;dr:1. Introduction and Business Overview: Samreen Arshad, the CEO and founder of SamreensVanity, discusses the inception of her luxury cosmetics line aimed at elevating South Asian representation in the beauty industry. She recognized a market gap and launched her brand during the pandemic with initial products like eyeliners and dual-ended lipsticks.2. Product Line and Strategy: Samreen explains that her brand currently offers nine SKUs, including innovative products like dual-ended lipsticks. Starting with eyeliners to test market needs, her strategy has been to grow slowly and steadily rather than flooding the market with products. This approach has led to partnerships with QVC and potential opportunities with Costco and Shark Tank.3. Incubator Program: Samreen is participating in the Tower 28 incubator program, which is a ten-week initiative founded by Amy Liu. The program includes classes led by industry leaders, and it concludes with the opportunity to pitch to major retailers like Sephora and Ulta.4. Vision and Growth Plans: Samreen envisions international expansion for SamreensVanity, citing interest from regions like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. She emphasizes that her brand, which has a strong customer base and minimal returns, is poised for significant growth once it ramps up marketing efforts.5. Wefunder Campaign and Investor Relations: To support the community-driven ethos of her brand, Samreen opted for a crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder where individuals can invest. She highlights the backing of Backstage Capital, founded by Arlan Hamilton, and encourages potential investors to participate, emphasizing the collective potential for significant returns. How to Develop Connecting with People As a SuperpowerSamreen's superpower is her exceptional ability to connect with people. This natural talent allows her to build genuine relationships, fostering trust and collaboration that drive her success as an entrepreneur and influencer.Samreen exemplified her superpower when she connected with Arlan Hamilton, the founder of Backstage Capital. Without any immediate intention to seek investment, Samreen genuinely engaged with Arlan, showing interest in her work and attending her events. This authentic connection led to Arlan eventually offering to back Samreen's fundraising efforts, illustrating the profound impact of building sincere relationships.Actionable Tips for Developing this Superpower:* Be Genuinely Interested in Others: Focus on learning about people rather than trying to impress them. Show genuine curiosity about their stories and experiences.* Be Open and Vulnerable: Don't be afraid to share your own strengths and weaknesses. Openness and honesty foster deeper connections.* Voice Your Admiration: When you're impressed by someone, let them know. Acknowledging others' achievements builds rapport.* Start Building Relationships Early: Don't wait until you need something to start connecting. Build relationships well in advance of when you might need support.By following Samreen Arshad's example and advice, you can make connecting with people a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Ralf's innovative approach to equity crowdfunding is reshaping how we think about and engage with investment opportunities.Ralf's journey into equity crowdfunding began with his fascination for "Shark Tank" and the potential of crowdfunding to democratize investment. "When Howard Marks of StartEngine told me about equity crowdfunding in 2015, it was like a light bulb went off," Ralf shared. "I realized you could raise funding from the crowd, not just accredited investors, which was a game-changer."This realization led Ralf to develop NextPitch.tv, an interactive platform where viewers can engage with crowdfunding campaigns in real-time, much like "Shark Tank," but with a crucial difference. "Unlike 'Shark Tank,' you can actually invest in the campaigns you see," Ralf explained. "It's about creating a dynamic where the viewers can build their own portfolios and rate campaigns themselves."One of the most compelling aspects of NextPitch.tv is its ability to aggregate campaigns from various platforms, allowing users to explore a wide array of innovative projects. Ralf emphasized, "The important part is not the platform; the important part is the innovation of the campaigns."Ralf's vision extends beyond just showcasing campaigns. He aims to create a sense of urgency and excitement around these opportunities. "If we can build a big enough audience, it creates a dynamic where there are only a limited number of opportunities, and if you want to invest, you better grab it while you can," Ralf said, drawing an apt metaphor with a pizza being quickly consumed. This interactive and participatory model not only democratizes investment but also leverages the collective wisdom of the crowd. "The crowd has a remarkable ability to do due diligence. Everyone scrutinizes it in a different way, creating a comprehensive evaluation of the opportunities," Ralf noted. As we discussed the future of equity crowdfunding, Ralf's optimism was palpable. He sees the industry not just growing but fundamentally changing the landscape of small business finance. "Crowdfunding could occupy a majority of the small business finance space, making it literally hundreds of times bigger than it is today," he agreed.NextPitch.tv is not just a platform; it's a movement towards making equity crowdfunding accessible and exciting for everyone. Ralf's innovative approach and passion for this space are truly inspiring, and I look forward to seeing how NextPitch.tv will shape the future of investment.tl;dr:1. Ralf Mandt is developing an innovative platform, NextPitch.tv, which aims to integrate the excitement of shows like Shark Tank with the interactive nature of equity crowdfunding, allowing viewers to invest directly in startup campaigns they find compelling.2. Ralf's experience spans over 12 startups, highlighting his passion for entrepreneurship and his keen interest in digital solutions to scale businesses, such as transitioning from traditional inventory-heavy businesses to tech-driven models.3. Despite early setbacks, including a cannabis-related crowdfunding campaign that was halted, Ralf's persistence in the equity crowdfunding space underscores his belief in its potential to democratize investment opportunities for startups beyond the traditional venture capital route.4. NextPitch.tv seeks to showcase innovative equity crowdfunding campaigns in a user-friendly format where audiences can build custom portfolios and contribute to their favorites, focusing on the innovation of campaigns rather than the platforms that host them.5. With the growth of equity crowdfunding showing significant potential, Ralf is actively seeking support through a "Test the Waters" campaign on Wefunder, aiming to aggregate sufficient interest to launch a full-scale Reg CF campaign and further solidify NextPitch.tv's place in the industry. How to Develop Passion and Experience As a SuperpowerRalf's superpower is the potent combination of his deep passion for startups and his extensive experience in entrepreneurship. This blend fuels his ability to navigate the complexities of launching new ventures, particularly in the equity crowdfunding space, and to mentor others through the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship.Ralf exemplified his superpower during his work with Alpha Biz, a company that aimed to create a marketplace for small businesses to sell their ventures. Leveraging his passion for startups and his technical expertise, Ralf helped develop a software solution that provided early traction for the company. This experience underscores how his passion and experience work together to drive success in innovative projects.Tips for Developing Passion and Experience:1. Pursue What Excites You: Find areas that genuinely ignite your interest and enthusiasm. This passion will sustain you through the inevitable ups and downs.2. Embrace Continuous Learning: Accumulate practical experience by engaging in various entrepreneurial ventures. Learn from each success and failure.3. Identify Genuine Needs: Focus on real market needs and strive to meet them with innovative solutions.4. Be Resilient: Prepare for the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow.5. Adapt and Evolve: Recognize that different stages of a startup require different skills. Be willing to grow and adapt as your venture scales.6. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. But I guess I'll say my superpower is probably grit.Finding the right senior housing for loved ones is often a daunting and stressful experience. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Bennett Kim, the CEO and founder of ZNest, who is on a mission to transform this process. Bennett shared his professional journey and the personal motivations that led him to create ZNest, a platform designed to democratize senior housing options and streamline the search process for families.Bennett's career in senior housing began over two decades ago with a private equity firm, Apollo, which owned the largest private assisted living operator in the country at the time. His experiences with Apollo and the challenges he faced finding care for his aging parents deeply influenced his decision to start ZNest during the pandemic. One of the most compelling aspects of Bennett's work is his recognition of the systemic issues within the senior housing industry. He identified that existing referral companies often prioritize profit over genuinely helping families, leading to a lack of transparency and limited options for those seeking care. ZNest aims to change this by providing a comprehensive, free directory similar to Zillow or Apartments.com, allowing families to see all their options without being steered by hidden incentives.Bennett explained, "We need to have kind of this democratized data and allow families to know what all their options are. So we say our model is a little bit more akin to a Zillow or an Apartments.com for senior housing where there's a free consumer-facing side and we just monetize through tools on the back end."In addition to revolutionizing the search process for senior housing, ZNest is also addressing another critical issue in the industry: labor shortages. Bennett highlighted that the pre-boarding process for new hires in senior housing facilities often takes several weeks, causing many potential employees to opt for quicker employment opportunities like fast food or gig economy jobs. To combat this, ZNest is developing tools to keep job seekers engaged through text-based communication and detailed community profiles, which also serve to inform families about their potential new homes.Bennett's innovative approach to solving these dual challenges in the senior housing industry not only aims to make life easier for families but also seeks to improve operational efficiency for housing providers. His vision for ZNest is a testament to his commitment to creating meaningful change in a space that affects so many lives. For those interested, ZNest is currently raising funds on Wefunder. You can learn more about their mission and support their efforts at wefunder.com/znest.tl;dr:1. Introduction and Guest Background: The show opens with host Devin welcoming guest Bennett Kim, an entrepreneur from ZNest, a company aiming to revolutionize how people find senior housing. Bennett is motivated by both personal and professional experiences, including senior housing development and his parents' aging.2. Career Catalysts and Pandemic Insights: Bennett explains that his extensive experience in the senior housing industry and his parents' ages prompted him to start ZNest, especially during the pandemic. He wanted to create something meaningful in the latter part of his career and saw the existing senior housing search processes as problematic.3. ZNest's Mission and Technology: Bennett outlines ZNest's mission to democratize data for senior housing. Unlike existing referral companies, ZNest aims to provide a comprehensive directory akin to Zillow or Apartments.com for senior housing, allowing families easier access to their options without biased referrals from companies prioritizing their profit margins.4. Employment Issues in Senior Housing: Another focus of ZNest is addressing labor shortages and high attrition rates in senior housing. Bennett's team developed tech solutions, including a texting-based engagement service to keep job seekers engaged during the lengthy pre-boarding process. These profiles serve dual purposes: aiding in both employment and housing searches.5. Crowdfunding and Future Directions: ZNest is raising funds on Wefunder to further develop its platform. They aim to reduce the reliance on costly referral fees and provide a more transparent and efficient process for both housing seekers and employers in the senior housing industry. Bennett encourages the audience to invest in ZNest via their Wefunder campaign. How to Develop Grit As a SuperpowerBennett Kim defines his superpower as grit. He attributes his success to his ability to persist through challenges and maintain his commitment to his goals, even when faced with significant obstacles. Despite not always being the smartest or most charismatic person in the room, his unwavering determination has enabled him to overcome difficulties and achieve his objectives.Bennett shared an anecdote illustrating his grit during the early stages of building ZNest. He recounted multiple instances where the company was on the brink of running out of cash, leaving them with only a couple of months' worth of funds. These moments were filled with uncertainty and doubt, but Bennett's relentless perseverance and constant effort to pivot and adapt kept the company afloat. His ability to "keep on pounding" and "claw back" during these tough times exemplifies his superpower of grit.Tips for Developing Grit:1. Daily Reflection: Spend time each day reflecting on why you are pursuing your goals. This can be the first thought in the morning or the last thought before bed.2. Passion Alignment: Ensure you are genuinely passionate about your work. Passion helps sustain motivation during challenging times.3. Discipline: Develop a disciplined approach to your tasks. Commit to taking consistent steps forward, no matter how small they may seem.4. Introspection: Regularly evaluate your progress and adjust your strategies as needed. Being introspective can help you stay aligned with your goals and make necessary adjustments.By following Bennett Kim's example and advice, you can make grit a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileBennett Kim (he/him):CEO, ZNestAbout ZNest: ZNest is “Zillow meets Glassdoor for senior housing.” The monetization for the initial phase is a labor platform (job board, analytics, salary transparency) connected to a free consumer-facing senior housing directory. It would be tolerance for pain.In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lorde Astor West, the dynamic CEO and Technical Founder of RadHash LTD. Astor shared her inspiring journey and the groundbreaking innovations her company is bringing to the startup ecosystem. Astor's passion for democratizing software development and automating startup processes stood out as a central theme of our conversation. RadHash's unique approach integrates all the challenging aspects of launching a software startup, making it more accessible and efficient. As Astor explained, “We've taken all of the things that are really difficult about starting a software startup, and we've kind of meshed them all together.”One of the most compelling aspects of RadHash's technology is its potential to revolutionize the capital-raising process. Astor highlighted how their system provides real-time data to investors, enhancing their confidence and willingness to invest early. “By having that data and that embedded funding feature as a part of our ecosystem, investors are getting real-time data that are linked to the performance of that startup's software,” she said. This transparency and accessibility can significantly reduce the risks associated with early-stage investing. Moreover, RadHash's platform is designed to be inclusive, addressing historical biases in the venture capital industry. Astor pointed out, “When you can rely on numbers and you see things in that investment portfolio that make sense, there's less opportunity to bake in those historic issues that permeate our systems.” This commitment to equity can level the playing field for marginalized groups, offering more opportunities for diverse founders.Astor's own story is a testament to perseverance and innovation. With over two decades in software development, she has built RadHash to empower solo founders and small teams by providing a comprehensive, no-code platform that standardizes and simplifies software creation. For those interested in supporting this transformative venture, RadHash's campaign can be found on Wefunder. As Astor put it, “Build your system, get your platform funded, hire your team all within one thing. And if you're a solo founder, it's a really good way to get started because you really don't need anyone but yourself.”Astor's vision and RadHash's innovative solutions are set to make a significant impact on the startup landscape, fostering a more inclusive and efficient ecosystem for future entrepreneurs.tl;dr:1. Introduction to RadHash Platform: Lorde Astor West explains RadHash, a platform designed to democratize software development and automate the startup ecosystem. It aims to simplify the capital raising process for SaaS entrepreneurs by integrating real-time data and reducing bias in investment decisions.2. Benefits of RadHash for Investors and Entrepreneurs: The platform provides real-time performance data, enhancing investor confidence and enabling investments across a diverse ecosystem of industries and founders. It aims to level the playing field for marginalized groups by focusing on data rather than biases traditionally ingrained in venture capital processes.3. Astor's Journey and Experience: Astor shares her extensive background in software development, starting from the early 2000s, and highlights how her experiences shaped the creation of RadHash. She emphasizes her passion for automating systems and processes to optimize business operations.4. Unique Features of RadHash: Unlike typical no-code builders, RadHash allows users to build software without technical expertise and launch systems within their own private cloud, ensuring intellectual property ownership. The platform also features tools for creating diverse business models, hiring teams, and setting up funding exchanges.5. Superpower and Entrepreneurial Insights: Astor discusses her superpower of "tolerance for pain," essential for enduring the constant pressures of entrepreneurship. She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to develop mental toughness, perseverance, and the ability to roll with setbacks while staying focused on long-term goals. How to Develop Tolerance for Pain As a SuperpowerSummary of Superpower: Astor West's superpower is her remarkable tolerance for pain. This strength allows her to endure the constant pressures and setbacks inherent in entrepreneurship, maintaining focus and perseverance despite significant challenges.Illustrative Story: Astor described her entrepreneurial journey as one marked by relentless pressure, comparing it to the irritation of a persistent rug burn. She shared that this ongoing stress, both internal and external, is a reality for all founders. Despite experiencing moments where everything seemed to fall apart, Astor's ability to endure these hardships and keep moving forward exemplifies her superpower of tolerating pain.Tips for Developing This Superpower:1. Roll with the Punches: When something unfortunate happens, let it slide off your back. Don't dwell on it or give it undue attention.2. Fix and Prevent: If an issue is significant, find a way to fix it or ensure it doesn't happen again.3. Be Unflappable: Cultivate the ability to stay calm and composed, even when facing your worst nightmares.4. Persevere: Develop the diligence to keep going, knowing that challenges will come but they can be overcome.5. Embrace Resilience: Accept that failure is part of the journey and be prepared to start again if necessary.By following Astor West's example and advice, you can make tolerance for pain a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses.
