We begin our look back on the top stories of 2025, pretty much where we left off at the end of 2024, with the Browns and the team's planned move to Brook Park for a new covered stadium and mixed-use development. Over the course of the last year, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne battled the Haslam Sports Group over everything from the Modell Law -- which is meant to make it hard for Ohio teams to move from their home cities -- to the height of the stadium to a refusal to kick in public money. By December the fight was all but over, the Browns are moving to Brook Park, without county money but with $600 million from the state. The county remained steadfast in refusing to kick in any funding, and the Browns moved forward without it. The story begins our retrospective of the top local stories of 2025. We will cover the top statehouse stories in a year ender that will drop next week. The Akron Public Schools went through a rapid change of leadership in the spring after months of controversy and complaint about the actions and management style of Superintendent Michael Robinson. In April, the board accepted his resignation, after less than two years on the job. Then, it immediately hired his successor without conducting a search. East Cleveland had had three people serving as mayor in 2025. Brandon King, mayor when the year began, was convicted on public corruption charges in May and removed from that job. Before that, while facing trial, Sandra Morgan was appointed interim mayor. Once he was convicted, the charter called for Council President Lateek Shabazz to become the mayor. He was defeated in November by Morgan, who will return to the mayor's office. The mayor's office in Cleveland Heights was a revolving door this year. Voters recalled the city's first elected mayor, Kahlil Seren, in September. The recall vote resulted from a tumultuous period in Cleveland Heights City Hall that saw Seren and his wife accused of creating a hostile work environment. Seren denied those accusations. Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase, the superstar closer, and Luis Ortiz, a starter with promise, were suspended with pay in July as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into betting. By November, the pair had been indicted on charges they rigged pitches to help bettors win "prop" or situational bets. The two now face trial in May. Residents around the Shaker Lakes, who already saw Horseshoe lake drained, have rallied against a proposal by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to drain the remaining Lower Lake and turning, that, too, into parkland. The sewer district, responsible for spending on flood control, had planned to replace the lower lake dam, but said new data showed draining the lake would be the best, and most economical, flood control measure. The "Sound of Ideas" brought together stakeholders for a Community Tour discussion in August. "I don't care if you live in urban America or rural America, everyone wants the same thing," Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb said on the latest episode of How To Really Run A City. "They want a job they can get to in 15 minutes, they want a hospital or pharmacy within 15 minutes, they want a park or a grocery store or bars or restaurants, all within 15 minutes." Bibb went on to explain to our hosts, former Philly mayor Michael Nutter and former Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed, how he is turning his Ohio city into a convenient, accessible, bona fide 15-minute city — and what is needed to sustain that work. "People really want walkability," Bibb said. "They want safety and thriving neighborhoods and overall thriving cities. But we as mayors can't do this by ourselves. We need a federal government that's actually working. It has to be working with our governors and mayors." Bibb, a charismatic 38-year-old (and cousin to the first Black primetime newscaster in Ohio), will almost certainly be reelected next week, and both Reed and Nutter quickly picked up on his "get sh*t done" vibe. "A mayor is a reflection of their city," Reed said, "how it feels and how it will be there [for its people]." "Absolutely," Nutter said. Join us for an episode about a mayor who is laser-focused on making the lives of his constituents better in ways that anyone taking a stroll to the park can feel. Our conversation this week is with Tom Lix — founder & CEO of Cleveland Whiskey — on pushing the boundaries of convention while building on tradition to artfully blend science with craft to create unique award-winning Whiskey.Tom is a serial entrepreneur — prior to founding Cleveland Whiskey, he founded Public Interactive which he sold to National Public Radio, he served as President/COO of Yankelovich Partners, and as you'll hear later, Tom has always been a tinkerer through and through.Lix spent some formative years in the US Navy where in addition to some early bootleg distilling; he was cross-trained in nuclear physics and thermodynamics along with seawater/freshwater distillation. A college dropout who hitchhiked across the country fought forest fires in Alaska at the age of 17, and founded the first University-sponsored Motorcycle Club in America. He later earned his Doctorate in Business from Boston University.Originally published as episode #21 back in April of 2021, this conversation with Tom Lix is one of my personal favorites! Tom is a deep eloquent orator, with an eclectic entrepreneurial background, and is one of the best and most engaging storytellers I know, making for one of the most entertaining conversations so far! Cleveland Whiskey continues to push the boundaries of Whiskey's conventions as they've racked up award after award since our original recording and break ground on their new distillery and restaurant planned at the Flats South Bank in the Malcom Building, home to the Consolidated Fruit Auction company more than 100 years ago. Todd Goldstein — Founder & CEO of Whoa DoughIn 2008, Todd co-founded LaunchHouse with the mission to invest, develop, and foster promising idea-stage startups in Northeast, OH through Community, Education, Coworking, and Investment — and through LaunchHouse, has helped grow a diverse portfolio of 65 companies that collectively raised more than $30 million in follow in funding.Todd's most recent endeavor — among his many as a serial founder, entrepreneur, investor, and advocate for intellectual property rights — and where we'll spend most of the conversation today, is Whoa Dough, which he founded back in 2019 in the aftermath of discovering his 3 boys were diagnosed with severe gluten intolerance and now sells millions of healthy snack bars per year. The reality is that 32 million Americans suffer from food allergies, of which 5.6 million are children — a number that has grown drastically over the past few decades. At first, Todd thought he and his family's cookie-dough-eating days were over, but he quickly realized that he was intolerant of that too and took it upon himself to create a snack-happy, natural cookie-dough that could satisfy his family's sweet tooth without wreaking havoc on their bellies. Two years and many dozens of recipes later, Whoa Dough was born — and today is a growing brand that Todd and his team have grown to boast distribution in brands like American Airlines and participation in Mondelez' Snackfutures program all while creating a gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, plant-based, kosher, non-GMO, Vegan, natural product!Really enjoyed learning about Todd's journey, passion for building this out in Cleveland, and the momentum of Whoa Dough going forward!-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. Gerald Hetrick (CEO of Bezlio & Professional EOS Implementer) Gerald has been on the show once before; those of you who've been with Lay of The Land from the beginning may recall Gerald as one of the first entrepreneurs to make an appearance back on Episode #6, which I'd encourage anyone interested in learning Gerald's personal and entrepreneurial journey co-founding and leading two companies from inception to exit — spanning his time building Vox Mobile and Able — to take a listen to that episode… Gerald's an incredible storyteller and sets a great stage there for our conversation today where we pick up on where we left off and cover what's transpired in the years since. And it's pretty incredible how much has changed in this interim period and how impactful Gerald has been in driving that change. As CEO of Able, Gerlad led the organization through five years of 100% Year-Over-Year growth, a $7 million Series B fundraise, and ultimately a successful exit in early 2022 to Bullhorn, a leading software platform for the staffing and recruiting industry. With the time and space to reflect post-acquisition, Gerald resolved to be retrospective and learn from the lessons of his failures and successes over his 25 years of entrepreneurial experience. In this time, he came to the conclusion that he loves building great companies and that so many of the issues he struggled with in the process of building great companies were self-inflected, recognizing how much more impactful he could have been if he had prioritized running on a consistent business operating system, like EOS, and that ultimately these operating systems provide leverage, and not overhead.Collectively, these realizations amounted to Gerald becoming CEO of another Cleveland growth-oriented technology startup called Bezlio, and starting his own EOS implementation practice, coaching other growth-minded leaders willing to invest in making their visions reality and their teams as healthy as possible! At Bezlio, Gerald is focused on ensuring manufacturing shop-floor employees know what to do next and how to do it right, believing deeply in Bezlio's opportunity to significantly drive middle-market manufacturing growth and prosperity. To that end, Bezlio recently closed a $4.5 million seed round to invest in massive product improvements to its cloud-based mobile ERP (Enterprise resource planning) platform, their go-to-market strategy, and customer relationships. This was a really fun and candid conversation, understanding how Gerald has evolved as a leader, closing Able's chapter, starting Bezlio's chapter, building his coaching practice in service of other founders trying to build great organizations, his approach to dreaming big and operating practically, and many other reflections along the way.-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Burton D. Tracy Strobel — CEO of the Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL)Tracy Strobel was appointed Chief Executive Officer of CCPL in July 2019 after serving in the Deputy Director role for nearly 15 years. CCPL has 27 branches that serve the 610,000 residents of 47 communities in Northeast Ohio. CCPL has earned the prestigious five-star rating in Library Journal's Index of Public Library Service for the last decade; and received the publication's highest overall score among America's largest metropolitan library systems for 10 consecutive years (2010-2019).Tracy's career in public libraries began with a focus on technology at Medina County District Library (1996-1999) and Cleveland Public Library (1999-2005), where she developed the nation's first 24/7 virtual reference service. Prior to becoming CEO, she led its 27 branches, Information Technology, Technical Services and Literacy & Learning divisions. Her major accomplishments at CCPL include leading the largest capital improvement program in the Library's history, which included the replacement of twelve branches and several renovation projects over a period of ten years. From 2011 to 2013, Tracy served as the U.S. representative to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's International Network of Emerging Library Innovators. She was a member of the Public Library Association (PLA) Board of Directors (2016-2019) and the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Information Technology Policy Advisory Committee (2015-2019). Tracy served as chair of the ALA 2020 Census Library Outreach and Education Task Force (2018-2020) and is currently a member of the PLA's Continuing Education Advisory Committee. In February 2020, Tracy was appointed to the board of The Center for Community Solutions, a nonpartisan think tank focused on solutions to health, social and economic issues. She also serves on the board of Youth Opportunities Unlimited and chairs their Community Collaboration Committee. This was an amazing conversation — we cover Tracy's childhood dream of being a librarian, the history of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, the business and operations of libraries, their responsibility and role as a civic institution and bastion for education & the robust exchange of ideas, their evolution and relevance in ever dynamic and technologically enabled world, offering opportunity as a product, lesser-known and unexpected services of libraries, and ultimately, Tracy's vision for the future of the Cuyahoga County Public Library! If you can't tell, I am personally a huge fan of libraries, and as Tracy and I will discuss, I think they are of the most underrated public institutions we have, so it was a real treat to hear from Tracy about her experience leading the Cuyahoga County Public Library!-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. Michael Sirpilla, co-founder and CEO of Society Brands.Under Michael's leadership as CEO, Society Brands has raised $205 million in capital to continue their rapid consolidation in the e-commerce sector with many completed and successful acquisitions since inception. Society Brands, based in Canton, Ohio, is a tech-enabled consumer products company that acquires e-commerce native brands and powers them with a global growth platform, scaling and evolving them into household brands. They provide meaningful liquidity for the founders of each acquisition while allowing those founders to stay on board at Society Brands, building out a community of entrepreneurs who help one another reach new heights. In addition, these founders have the ability to roll equity into Society Brands' parent company so that they can enjoy a second exit down the road that may likely be even larger than their first.Michael, who grew up here in Ohio, has been in and around retail his whole life with extensive M&A experience throughout his career and has been part of multiple business ventures where he's primarily focused on organic growth. He founded a financial services wholesale agency with a team of 40 and built it into a multi-million-dollar business, and in addition, he led a population health management business and scaled it from $0 to $150 million in revenue within five years. This was an awesome conversation — Michael does an excellent job explaining what the world of e-commerce looks like, how it has evolved over time, Society Brand's role to play within this goliath market, and the way he's been able to rapidly scale this organization over time.-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. Mike Schroeder, Founder & President of Roundstone.Mike founded Roundstone Insurance in 2003 — when they launched the first Group Medical Captive of its kind, and have since revolutionized the self-insurance industry. Roundstone's captive approach to insurance allows small and mid-sized businesses to take advantage of the benefits of self-funded insurance that previously only larger enterprises could enjoy — such as plan flexibility & control, transparency, and cost savings. By banding smaller companies together in a shared-risk community, those companies are protected from volatility and can be rewarded with extra savings — in practice, since its inception, Roundstone has distributed over $72 million dollars back to its captive participants – money that, in the fully insured model, would be pocketed by the insurance carriers instead. This idea, which began with an entrepreneurial vision of creating a better life for his family and for his employees, has since evolved under Mike's leadership into a thriving 140-person company with more than 700 employers participating in Roundstone's Group Medical Captive, saving participating companies 20% on average relative to traditional insurance plans; With more than twenty-five years of management experience and recognized by EY as a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year in 2022, Mike has a proven track record of growing Roundstone with a 30% CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) over the last two decades, which has earned Roundstound recognition as one of the fastest growing companies in America by Inc. 5000 for five consecutive years as well a Northeast Ohio Top Workplaces — all while remaining a fully independent, family-owned organization. In our conversation today, we explore how Mike's experience as a practicing attorney and a property and casualty insurance expert inspired his application of self-funding and captives to employer health insurance; we talk about what captives and self-funding even are and how they compare to traditional and fully insured coverage, we unpack the biggest challenges in the employer healthcare system today and how misaligned incentives encumber attempts to solve those challenges… and importantly, how Roundstone is trying to explicitly align those incentives. This was an amazing and wide-ranging discussion — Mike is a formidable builder and leader and has built an inspiring organization with Roundstone, based here in Lakewood, Ohio.-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. David Levine — Co-Founder/CEO @ Wireless Environment (Acquired by Ring, Acquired by Amazon) & Co-Founder/CEO @ My Home Park Having made a career of invention and serial entrepreneurship, in 2005 David Co-Founded Wireless Environment to revolutionize the lighting industry with a belief that off-grid, wireless, LED lighting would be the future of lighting. Over the next 13 years, David proved that thesis as he lead the organization as CEO to over $30 million in sales on just $1.1 million in equity raised and ultimately to acquisition by Ring in 2017 and subsequently to Amazon in 2018 — and there are some truly incredible stories that David shares about this entire experience building, growing, and exiting Wireless Environment.Post-acquisition, with the time now to reflect and to focus on what challenge to tackle next and to think through what he ultimately wants to provide the world, David shifted his focus to natural habitat restoration and his longtime fascination with bees — whose populations are waning and whose endangerment is highly consequential to our food supply and plant. In the spirit of this problem, David joined forces with his co-founder Wyatt Shell to start My Home Park in 2021 to revolutionize how people view their yards and empower them to use their yards to restore the environment. My Home Park is a platform that creates curated gardens delivered right to customers' doorstep, taking the guesswork, effort, and frustration out of landscaping with native plants. For people who want to do something beneficial for the environment, planting native plant gardens is the highest-order impact you can have on the environment per dollar spent — knowing that in just 100 square feet, native plants feed up to 2,000 pollinators per day, conserve 2,300 gallons of water per year and provide 16x greater soil stabilization — and My Home Park facilitates this whole process.David is an inspiring entrepreneur and this conversation is packed full of wisdom!-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. Bill Manby, Founding & Managing Partner at Interstate Fusion Ventures. An entrepreneur at heart, Bill grew up in NEO and has always been passionate about working every day to make his home better through investments, philanthropy, and whatever else it takes. In late 2016, this vision led to the creation of his first fund – Akron Fusion Ventures (later rebranded as Interstate Fusion Ventures). While Bill knew the benefits of living in NEO and the strong entrepreneurial spirit, he felt he needed to build relationships with partners on the coasts. So, he set out on a cross-country road trip to introduce this vision to venture capital partners and investors in Silicon Valley. Along the way, this vision grew to not only seed opportunities for NEO-based startups, but also, get on the cap table of some of the best coastal startups, who benefit from access to NEO. It also allowed fund investors the ability to gain access to unique, and otherwise inaccessible, investment opportunities.Bill founded Interstate because, for years, he witnessed many local organizations chart escape routes from the Midwest — observing a pattern of businesses, talent, ideas, and capital that leave for established coastal tech hubs, under an impression that doing so was the only path to success. With a belief that success can be achieved here, Interstate Fusion Ventures is the vehicle to prove it Connecting the Coasts to NEO by building an innovative “two-way street” where capital, talent, and knowledge can flow continuously attracting more investment and focus on startups in Northeast Ohio.I really enjoyed learning more about Bill's unique perspective and approach to tackling some of the challenges and supporting the local ecosystem-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. John McKenna, CEO of Peachtree VA, a virtual assistant staffing organization & President of The Emerald Group, a premier mortgage recruiting firm.Based here in Cleveland, John acquired Peachtree VA early in 2022 to grow their vetted virtual assistant offering in the wake of a flourishing virtual assistant industry where entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, nonprofits, executive directors, and other business models are often stretched thin, and using a virtual assistant can gain back some of their time, reduce cost and streamline their business.John points out that engaging virtual assistants can alleviate the exhaustive hiring process for companies, citing surveys showing that traditional hiring can be 78% more expensive and exponentially higher if an employee does not work out. Research also suggests that direct replacement costs can be as high as 50% to 60% of an employee's annual salary. Then there's the price of turnover with a traditional hire, with costs ranging from 90% to 200%of their annual salary. We cover a lot in our conversation today — from the ins and outs of entrepreneurship-via-acquisition and what that looks like in practice, to the nuance of this quickly evolving virtual assistance space — how to effectively delegate, the implications of the gig economy, supplementing exhaustive and costly hiring processes, and what comes next for Peachtree VA as John continues to the grow the business from here, helping their clients focus on what matters most!-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. Mitch Kroll, co-founder & CEO of Findaway (acquired by Spotify).Mitch started Findaway back in 2004, a time when audiobooks were available only on CD and cassette, in order to revolutionize this business of audiobooks, connecting storytellers with listeners at scale. With this vision of audiobook democratization in mind, Mitch led the company over the next 17 years to sell over 6 million units of its Playaway audiobook device and through a honed focus on innovation, became the global leader in digital audiobook distribution and trusted self-publishing platform for independent authors around the world. From a solidified position at the center of the audiobook industry, Findaway earned the attention of the world's largest audio streaming subscription service and was ultimately acquired by Spotify for nearly $120mm, announced at the end of 2021.Still operating out of their Solon headquarters here in Northeast Ohio, Mitch led Findaway through this acquisition where the team continues their work at Spotify to push the proliferation of audiobook adoption, leveraging the same innovation and platform that Spotify used to disrupt music and podcasts to power content distribution to hundreds of millions of users across the world!Mitch is a shrewd builder, deep thinker, and really just a lot of fun to learn from — I learned a great deal from our conversation today, which spans everything from the history and future of audiobooks to how Mitch thinks about culture, to professional and life lessons, to the Cleveland startup ecosystem. Please enjoy my conversation with Mitch Kroll!-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and Berea Mayor Cyril Kleem, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and others are due to make one or more big announcements starting next week that will include the lakefront football stadium, the Browns' Berea campus, mixed-use developments around both plus a relocated Shoreway. The announcements will be about changes intended to activate the downtown lakefront by the end of this decade in ways it hasn't been since the 1930s and to create a year-round fan-friendly village around the team's suburban headquarters and practice facility, according to two sources familiar with the developments. There are still many unknowns at this early stage. But between now and when the venue formerly known as FirstEnergy Stadium (reverting back to Cleveland Browns Stadium) is rebuilt, many of the team's and Haslam Sports Group office staff will be temporarily relocated from their Berea headquarters to makeshift offices at the stadium and to remote working.During the renovation of the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, the Browns offseason training programs may have to be relocated for up to one year. Expansion of the campus will take longer — more than one year and may be carried out in phases depending on financing and city approvals. The expanded campus will reportedly include a new hotel, restaurants, shops, conference facilities. The Haslams and the city have already acquired more than 30 acres of land and demolished many homes and a church for this massive expansion of the Browns' Berea facilities. It isn't publicly known yet where the Browns will play, but Columbus is a likely location. The Haslams already have a presence there with their Columbus Crew Major League Soccer club. Its venue, the two-year-old, soccer-specific Lower.com Field, seats only 20,371. When the Browns played their first Orange & Brown Scrimmage on Aug. 7, 2015, they played to 49,734 fans at the Ohio State University's 102,734-seat Ohio Stadium (aka The Horseshoe). It was the highest attendance for any Browns open practice or Family Day since at least 2005. The Browns would like to regain their fan dominance in Ohio's capital city, taking attention away from their AFC North Division rivals Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
