How to Improve the Tunnel WalkAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
The guys break down the 2024 schedule, try to predict what's going to happen at Iowa, the coaching carousel, Minnesota backing into a bowl game, the problematic Tunnel Walk this season, what Matt Rhule's return to Twitter will look like, Nebrasketball's KenPom Average, relitigate The Dark Knight Rises, and fail to count well.
Of all the places one might expect to go for absolution, it's a fair bet that a volleyball match would be fairly low on the list. Yet, that's exactly what happened last Wednesday at the University of Nebraska's Memorial Stadium, though hardly any of the more than 92,000 people in the house realized that was what was happening at the time. All they wanted was to see their beloved Cornhuskers play host to Omaha. And they got that, as five-time national champion Nebraska won in three sets. But the crowd – the largest ever to see a women's sporting event anywhere on Earth – did more than take in a volleyball match. For one magical night, those players and that crowd helped in some small measure restore a note of nobility to college athletics, an industry sorely in need of cleansing. In case you hadn't heard – and if you haven't, you haven't been paying attention – the state of college sports resembles nothing less than a cesspool these days. From one corner of the nation to the other, long-time relationships and commitments are being torn asunder all in the name of money, which seems to run afoul of the lofty goals we ascribe to the hallowed halls of academia. In the latest chapter of the sad tale that college sports has woven in recent years, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford, having been cast adrift by eight members of the Pac-12 Conference, jumped aboard the Atlantic Coast Conference for admittance next year. You heard correctly. Two San Francisco Bay area schools with outstanding academic reputations, as well as Southern Methodist University in Dallas joined an association of schools that are mostly within a three-hour drive of the Atlantic Ocean. While Stanford and Cal are compatible academically with schools like Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and Georgia Tech, they have nothing in common with them geographically. Yet, in the world that college athletics have devolved into, Bears and Cardinal and Cavaliers and Tar Heels and Blue Devils and Yellow Jackets are all neighbors. Into that morass stepped the Nebraska-Omaha volleyball match. The Cornhusker program has been one of the shining jewels of college sports for decades. In 46 years, the Nebraska volleyball team has racked up over 1,350 wins, with 34 conference titles and those aforementioned five national championships. It's a legacy of achievement that sets the women of Lincoln apart. And while those women have tasted success at the highest level of their sport and booming attendance at their indoor facility, the one thing they haven't known is the feeling their football brethren have experienced regularly. That would be the Tunnel Walk into the bowl of Memorial Stadium in Lincoln having 83,000, the stadium's capacity, all clad in Nebraska red, screaming on their behalf. And so they did, only the volleyball team was able to do the football squad 9,000 better, as temporary seats were placed on the field to boost the capacity higher. College athletics has a long way to go to restore normalcy and decency after the cash grabs of the last few years. But for one warm August night in 2023, a big house on the prairie played host to a little dignity. And that's how I see it for this week. This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Greg and Jon will get caught up on the last few weeks of podcast off-season homework. If you missed those shows, here's a little recap of the assignments: The top former Huskers who no longer qualify for "once a Husker, always a Husker" status. You know what I mean. Either through decisions made on the field or off, they've brought a level of shame and disrespect to themselves and Nebraska. Secondly, we're taking another look at the Tunnelwalk, specifically the song to which our beloved Huskers take the field. The Alan Parsons Project's 'Sirius.' But in a world where Wisconsin jumps around and Virginia Tech welcomes the Sandman, what song options are out there that could fit Nebraska and appease the greatest number of fans? Jon wrote a beautiful country song he shared, entitled "Always Stay Winner, Herbie", which includes this incredible stanza: There's a whisper in the Nebraska breeze Reminding me of winning That whisper builds That whisper cries Winning in the morning skies ------------ The Chatterfields are here bringing these topics and more, but we've made it to July and we're all still alive and drinking various strengths of kool-aid. Recent findings from a Twitter User indicate that Nebraska Cornhusker athletics from the big three respective male and female sports (two basketballs, football and volleyball, baseball and softball) are the highest national average for attendance. Most loyal and best overall fanbase in the country...that's us! Also, I've been thinking about the Tunnel Walk recently. Alan Parsons Project's “Sirius” has been the song to which the Huskers take the field since 1994. But did it have to be Sirius? Has anyone ever quoted the Joker in the past 15 years and asked “Why so Sirius?” (The Dark Knight came out in the summer of 2008.) Wisconsin starting jumping around in 1998 and Virginia Tech started bumping the seismometer to Metallica's “Enter Sandman” in 2000. So why did Nebraska take the Tunnel Walk so Sirius-ly (I regret nothing)? And we'll jump in our time machines, go back to 1994, and see if there were any other songs better suited for the future national champions. Learn more about your ad choices. Greg, Todd and myself get together for another episode of the Five Heart Podcast. The longest podcast episode EVER. This is my fault for bringing up Thor Heyerdahl and Kontiki. In this episode we cover: The latest transfers in football - Stephon Wynn Jr. and Marcus Washington and how they fit into Nebraska's football team. Baseball transfers - five players have already entered the transfer portal. Lat Mayen not returning to Nebraska basketball. Then there's Husker traditions. Greg has a list of Husker traditions; we discuss whether we'd keep them or not and what adjustments we'd make. Did you know that years ago Husker fans threw oranges on the field? No? Well, they did. They threw oranges in the end zones every time we scored to symbolize our desire to get to the Orange Bowl, the most prized season-end destination for years. Then one day that tradition ended. ENDED. The 1982 Nebraska - Oklahoma game was very cold. The oranges people had became frozen. Someone threw a frozen orange that struck an official in the back of the head, permanently disabling him. That tradition ended right there. No one shit themselves about it. Why? Because it was a pretty stupid tradition. The Tunnel Walk tradition began in 1994. It just started. Husker fans accepted it rather quickly and it became a great way to recognize that the team was coming on the field so you'd better get your ass in your seat to see the opening kickoff. No one shit themselves about it. Do you know why? Because nobody can remember what we did before the Tunnel Walk to recognize the team coming onto the field. It was a good idea. Now we have the balloon tradition going away. Many people are shitting themselves. Do you know why? I don't either. Apparently they'd like to keep a tradition where we pump shit tons of litter into the air and don't give a damn about where it ends up. Anyway, give it a listen. IF YOU DARE. Two games won. In a row. A rarity in the Scott Frost Era.Scott and I were in Memorial Stadium on Saturday to witness the Huskers' 28-3 victory over the Buffalo Bulls. It was hot. Really hot. And it was emotional, as we remembered the terrorist attacks of 9/11 on it's 20th Anniversary. Damian Jackson led first responders and the team onto the field in a memorable Tunnel Walk, while the team galvanized around a gutsy defensive performance to send the fiesty Bulls home with their first L of the 2021 season. Then we switch gears to discuss the impending doom that seems to await the Huskers in Norman next Saturday, when they face off against the highly-ranked Sooners. We finish the show with another Fun Fact segment featuring Legos and a past memorable experience in Memorial Stadium. We hope you enjoyed the show, and would love for you to contact us with questions, comments, or suggestions. If you are loving or hating the music at Nebraska events including football, basketball or volleyball then you can thank Chris Pankonin. Chris also played the major role behind the scenes for video production for both volleyball and baseball games. He was kind enough to give us his time as he gave us a peek behind the curtain. We talked about how the music is chosen and why timing is so important. Remember in 2016 when Andy Janovich ripped off that 55-yard touchdown against Wisconsin and then they started playing “Let Me Clear My Throat” and the players started dancing to it and it turned into a big thing? That was Chris Pankonin. We talked about No Sit Sunday, which he played a major part in keeping the crowd into the game throughout. He considers No Sit Sunday to be the one of his best days at Nebraska. I also had to ask about the Tunnel Walk. He gave us some background into how those decisions are made. Chris tells us about his next job which will be with the Oregon Ducks. Why would you leave his current job with the Nebraska Cornhuskers to go work for Ducks? Well he has a pretty good reason. Before leaving we chatted about the upcoming basketball season and you can tell we are all pretty excited for what we hope is coming. To end we did our top five cover songs. CLARIFICATION…Hoss hates current Herbie. It was an accidental conversation that got brought up while we were talking about Hoss’ new hat purchase. “New season. New coach. New hat.” He didn’t get me one…I forgot to even bring that up. Classic Herbie. That’s Hoss’ bread n butter. We also talk about the Tunnel Walk, throw a shout out to our friends at the Big Red Cobcast, and talk a little recruiting ahead of next week’s episode. Next week, the Firm of Hoss and Hooch returns with a new Cross Examination of our Director of Recruiting, Rick Cone. If you like the show, tell your friends. Jack talks with the still anonymous creator of Tunnel Walk of Shame about the origins of the online comic strip, the unexpected reaction, the unique nature of being a Husker fan and what's went wrong with it, and what's next for TWOS during the Scott Frost. **CONTAINS A FEW SWEAR WORDS**
There’s a lot to discuss after last week’s Spring Game. How did the quarterbacks perform? How about the running backs? How much combined muscle mass did Zach Duval put on Devine Ozigbo and Mikale Wilbon? How electrifying was Greg Bell? Who stood out on the defense? What are some of Hoss’ guilty pleasure songs, and why does Greg have a special place in one of his five hearts for musicals of all varieties? What sweep option play had Hoss completely baffled to the point that he sought wisdom from the Twittersphere? I thought this was just Power Read when I was in the stadium yesterday. Martinez is reading the EMOL for the give/keep and we’re looking to trap the 4i. I’ve never seen this before in CFB. Good way to threaten the edge & control the midline. pic.twitter.com/0wjtzWHXZy — Ryan Reuter (@HossReuter) April 22, 2018 Over all, how did the Huskers look on Saturday? How did Scott Frost handle himself and his team in his first Spring Game in Lincoln since the Spring of 1997? Since there has been talk of changing the song for the Tunnel Walk, the guys offer their suggestions and show how old they really are. And for the life of me, I don’t remember how I made a Homestar Runner reference, but I did. And in case you wanted to be cheaply entertained, please watch this video. So that’s the show. Hope you enjoyed it. We had a blast recording it. And we do it for you. So keep that in mind when you head to the comments section. ESPN's Mitch Sherman joined Joe Quinn and Nick Handley Friday afternoon to talk about the latest with the Shea Patterson news and how it could affect current Husker Breon Dixon. Then Mitch gives his opinion on the perhaps changing of the Husker Tunnel Walk music.
On the third hour of Omaha Sports Insider with Joe Quinn and Nick Handley, the guys react to more of the Husker spring game and then the Huskers came out to a different song for the tunnel walk. Should they look to change from the song "Sirius?" Then Greg Smith of Hail Varsity joins the show to update us on how recruits enjoyed their weekend in Lincoln.
When I hear or see “scorched earth,” I immediately think of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s “March to the Sea” in the Civil War. But after the overtime loss to Northwestern, it was time for Hoss Reuter to go scorched earth. The only problem is that after six days, even that was tempered a bit. While Hoss believes the end of the Mike Riley era is nigh, his scorched earth approach was quite mild. I’m no historian, but if Sherman would have marched to Savannah like Hoss railed on the coaching staff, the North may have been turned away in Macon. That being said, we believe a change is in the air. And after talking about the loss to the Wildcats, we discuss the “rumor and innuendo” that surrounds the Husker football program. And what can be done to get the best in-state athletes to play for Big Red, so that the Noah Fant’s of the world rip apart Ohio State while wearing the Scarlet and Cream? Also we hit up the Facebook page and talk about the Tunnel Walk and playing for pride, if nothing else. And stick around to the end to find out how to win a FREE box of food from Hello Fresh! Lots going on this week and we do appreciate you listening and sharing the show with the Husker fans in your life. Here are the links! Subscribe on iTunes!
