Two guests this week, as we're joined by the co-hosts of the literary nonfiction podcast I'll Find Myself When I'm Dead. Though Elena and Justin are also quite accomplished nonfiction authors in their own right. Justin St. Germain is the author of the memoir Son of a Gun, and more recently a book-length essay about Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. Elena Passarello is the author of the essay collections Let Me Clear My Throat and Animals Strike Curious Poses. The book they chose for us to read is a collection by Donald Hall, former U.S. poet laureate, called Essays After Eighty. We talk about the occasional essay as a form, what makes an essay an essay--as opposed to a random assortment of thoughts--and lots, lots more. Today's guest is Jess Lilly. Jess is a Heart-Centered Leadership Coach and coach trainer who is committed to creating a world full of empathetic, courageous leaders that understand it's way more effective to play "heartball" than "hardball". She lives in Washington, DC with her loyal steed Aidan the dog, whom I've met and he is adorable. There's a lot in this conversation that hasn't been covered in other episodes. I love that we talk about the difference between therapy and coaching, because I get this question a lot. We dive into how experiences don't define who you are, how we are meant to be interconnected, but not codependent, and how we humans think there's a version of life where there's no pain. And her Grandma Shirley makes an appearance as well. You will love Grandma Shirley. Quick reminder, for community and camaraderie, Come join us in the Fine is a 4-Letter Word Facebook group. DJ Kool is an American DJ and rapper born in 1958 who, in the late 1980s, produced several popular rap singles. Born in 1958 in Washington, D.C., his influence from his years of working the go-go and rap circuits became apparent in his music. He recorded with creative funk music from 1988 to 1992 he was then picked up by CLR records in 1992 he was then picked up by American recordings in 1996 and released the chart topping single “Let Me Clear My Throat,” which peaked at #8 in the UK Singles Chart in March 1997 and in 1996 in the U.S. The song prominently featured a sample of “The 900 Number” by DJ Mark the 45 King, (that song featured a sample from Marva Whitney's “Unwind Yourself”,repeated over a breakbeat for six minutes). The song also began by sampling “Hollywood Swinging” by Kool and the Gang. The song is a recognizable dance floor-filler, and the track remains popular to this day. DJ Kool was featured on Mýa's 2006 single “Ayo!” from her 2008 album Liberation. He was also featured on two tracks on Will Smith's 2005 album Lost and Found.

This week's reading is an essay by Elena Passarello about birdsong. But it's also other stuff! We talk about writing that make you look at the world a bit differently, and writers who can make you care about things you never thought you cared about. In the second half of the show, we discuss a recent Twitter kerfuffle over writing and money and whether publishing a book can (or should) change your life. The essay we discussed, "Of Singing," was published in The Iowa Review, but is also available in Passerello's 2012 collection, Let Me Clear My Throat, from Sarabande Books. If you are loving or hating the music at Nebraska events including football, basketball or volleyball then you can thank Chris Pankonin. Chris also played the major role behind the scenes for video production for both volleyball and baseball games. He was kind enough to give us his time as he gave us a peek behind the curtain. We talked about how the music is chosen and why timing is so important. Remember in 2016 when Andy Janovich ripped off that 55-yard touchdown against Wisconsin and then they started playing “Let Me Clear My Throat” and the players started dancing to it and it turned into a big thing? That was Chris Pankonin. We talked about No Sit Sunday, which he played a major part in keeping the crowd into the game throughout. He considers No Sit Sunday to be the one of his best days at Nebraska. I also had to ask about the Tunnel Walk. He gave us some background into how those decisions are made. Chris tells us about his next job which will be with the Oregon Ducks. Why would you leave his current job with the Nebraska Cornhuskers to go work for Ducks? Well he has a pretty good reason. Before leaving we chatted about the upcoming basketball season and you can tell we are all pretty excited for what we hope is coming. To end we did our top five cover songs. We hope you enjoy this weeks episode and don’t forget to tell your friends about us. Let Me Clear My Throat's first episode. Interview with Kejal Vyas.
From Farinelli, the eighteenth century castrato who brought down opera houses with his high C, to the recording of "Johnny B. Goode" affixed to the Voyager spacecraft, Elena Passarello, in Let Me Clear My Throat dissects the whys and hows of popular voices. There are murders of punk rock crows, impressionists, and rebel yells; Howard Dean's "BYAH!" and Marlon Brando's "Stella!" and a stock film yawp that has made cameos in movies from A Star is Born to Spaceballs. The voice is thought's incarnating instrument and Elena Passarello's essays are a deconstruction of the ways the sounds we make both express and shape who we are—the annotated soundtrack of us giving voice to ourselves.

Cheekyboy, 2006 — This is genius: what happens when you put DJ Kool’s classic Let Me Clear My Throat in a darkened room with Hillary Duff and some eggnog and peppermint schnapps? Holiday Magic™, that’s what. (Taken from the 2006 mash-up record Santastic II: Clausome.)
