Griffin Warner and Lonte Smith talk college football betting for Week 2. The Week 2 preview of the College Football Podcast on RJ Bell's Pregame network opened with energy, emphasizing fast offense, swarming defense, and relentless hustle. Griffin Warner and Lonte Smith immediately addressed Week 1 results, acknowledging that it wasn't the strongest start but pointing to process over outcome. They stressed closing line value as a long-term indicator, comparing it to stock market performance, and noted that Week 1 was dominated by unders, with many offenses struggling to find rhythm. Quarterback uncertainty remained the headline, with Arch Manning's rocky debut sparking debate. Warner went as far as to call him potentially the most overrated quarterback of all time, while Smith defended him by pointing out the caliber of Ohio State's elite defense. The discussion then shifted to broader conference takeaways. The ACC impressed in Week 1, particularly Florida State's big win, while Clemson's struggles stood out. Cal's freshman quarterback also earned praise for a breakout performance. The panel agreed that the top of the ACC looks strong with Florida State, Clemson, Duke, and Georgia Tech, while the bottom remains unsettled. From there, the show broke down marquee Week 2 matchups. SMU versus Baylor set the stage, with Baylor's defensive front and ability to stop explosive plays highlighted as key factors. Despite SMU entering as a small favorite, Smith leaned Baylor's way, questioning whether SMU had shown enough balance to justify the line. Next, the heated Iowa–Iowa State rivalry came into focus. The history of low-scoring slugfests made the under 41.5 an attractive play. Smith backed Iowa State's improved offense under Rocco Beck but insisted the real value lay in expecting another defensive battle. Illinois against Duke was another spotlight game. Both teams leaned on defense, but Duke's elite secondary and Manny Diaz's blitz-heavy schemes tilted the panel's confidence toward the Blue Devils. Warner emphasized that road favorites early in the season are often overvalued, making Duke's home underdog status particularly appealing. The nightcap, Michigan versus Oklahoma, focused on defensive dominance. Brent Venables' track record of confusing quarterbacks and Michigan's conservative freshman game plan pointed to another under. Smith's best angle was the first-half under 23.5, predicting a slow start with heavy ground games, limited big plays, and quarterbacks trying to settle in against relentless defenses. The show wrapped with best bets. Smith locked in Florida minus 17.5 against South Florida, pointing to mismatches in the trenches, Lagway's deep-ball ability, and Florida's familiarity with the spread concepts USF runs. Warner sided with the Iowa–Iowa State under 41.5, banking on punts, field position battles, and Kirk Ferentz's trademark conservative approach. Overall, the podcast captured the essence of early-season handicapping: balancing small-sample overreactions with long-term process discipline. Week 1 brought surprises, quarterback drama, and defensive dominance, but Week 2 promised opportunities with sharp numbers, classic rivalries, and critical matchups that could shape conference races. Whether it was Florida's talent edge, Duke's defensive identity, or the under trend in rivalry games, the conversation blended data, betting insight, and storytelling, giving listeners a comprehensive game plan heading into Saturday. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy We kick off football season with a review of a new film by prolific Christian director Jason Campbell. WE BELIEVE, which even features a cameo by former Superman actor Dean Cain, takes an impressionistic look at a real high school football community in St. Mary's, West Virginia, centering on the inspirational story of coach Jodi Mote. Grounded in fact, the film makes odd leaps into seemingly fictional storylines about St. Mary's students, an attempt to introduce conflict while staying inoffensive to the community. That tension becomes the film's biggest weakness. WE BELIEVE was cowritten by Campbell, Jodi Mote, and his wife Brandy, so the Motes clearly have a personal stake in telling the story of Jodi's sudden stroke, which left him unable to coach the St. Mary's Blue Devils during a crucial season. He was temporarily replaced by Bill Hanlin, a local legend remembered for coaching an undefeated season in 1963. The film's action drifts between Mote's recovery (as his team and special ed students miss him), Hanlin instilling Christian values in the Blue Devils, and contrived side plots: a Danish freshman exchange student turned field-goal kicker, and a troubled teen named Trey whose broken home pushes him into drinking and sexual temptation. The Danish subplot is especially bizarre, since actor Addison Dattilo, tattooed and visibly closer to 28 than 14, plays the role with the vibe of a California surfer instead of a homesick exchange student. In general, it is disappointing that the only conflicts (underage drinking, divorce, high school politics) are fictionalized; meanwhile the true story is flattened. The film would be far more compelling if it explored Mote's actual challenges. What did loneliness and frustration feel like for a devout Christian man whose body had failed him? To admit weakness, however, would cut against the film's purpose: flattering its collaborators. The 2024-25 Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Jordan Jones joins this week's episode of Not Even D2. The Florence, South Carolina native recently signed an overseas contract to play in the Slovenska Basketball League (SBL) in Slovakia. After a great college career playing at multiple levels, Jones now has set his aspirations to one day play at the highest level of basketball. Jones committed to Coker University (D2) out of high school. The 6'0 guard would spend three seasons playing at the Divison 2 level before Coach Sellers and Central Connecticut State began recruiting the All-SAC player. Jones with two years of eligibility left, committed to CCSU on his first official visit. Year 1 with the Blue Devils started with Jones coming off of the bench. Later that year, Jones became one of CCSU's best players and an all-conference player as a top 10 NEC scorer. Transitioning to year 2, Jones took a big leap in most statistical categories while leading his team in points and assists. He was a finalist for the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year award and was awarded the NEC Player of the Year. Jones finished his career with over 1,500 points and just under 500 assists. This episode gets into a great conversation with Jones about his future within basketball, what Coach Sellers has done to make CCSU a top team in the NEC, and the honor he holds of being awarded NEC Player of the Year. #dukefootball #goduke #duke #ddmf #theacc #acc #cfb #collegefootballOur old friend Steve Wiseman stopped by to bring us up to speed on where Duke is at this point in "fall camp". (I know you can't call it a "summer camp", but it's August - let's be serious.) Before we get into the Blue Devils, Steve talks about his recent promotion, how you can subscribe to Inside Sports and our kids and college tours. After that, Steve takes us through the position groups at Duke and what to expect from each this season. Sounds like there's some depth at key spots which is a good thing. And we've got a new quarterback who may be pretty darned good. After we wrap up the football talk, we cover how things fell apart for Duke in the Final Four. You've been warned. And if that weren't enough, Steve makes a big announcement about a project he's working on. And speaking of big announcements ... As I mentioned last year, I will be cutting back on podcast episodes. And while I planned to do fewer episodes this season than in the past seasons, I decided to cut back on them even more significantly. Doing a weekly podcast during football season, along with all the work associated with it by myself, takes up a lot of time. Between work and obligations to my children (they both play fall sports), I need to cut back. What that means for this season is that I'll probably do a season prediction episode, another one around one of the bye weeks and then an end-of-year wrap-up episode. After that, I'm not sure. Doing this podcast has been a privilege and an honor. I appreciate the fans and friends of the pod I've made over the years. Thank you for your support and for your time. I can't wait to see you guys at Wallace Wade this season. Please call the pod (540-632-0160), leave a message and you'll get in an episode.Let me know what you think about what we think in the comments, on Mastodon, on Reddit, on Instagram, or on Bluesky. As always, Go Duke!
Consistency is the key to success in any sport and without a doubt Duke has been pretty darned consistent in hoops. The same hasn't been the case in football which has seemed like an after thought in years past. Times change and the need to be successful on the field as well as the court go hand in hand. Mike Elko helped move the program out of the 'it's just good enough' phase and now Manny Diaz is upping the game. Special guest, Conor O'Neill the publisher of Devils Illustrated joins ACC Nation to provide a preview of the upcoming season. O'Neill points out that Diaz is moving the offense from a limited delivery system into one that will keep defenses on their toes. Find out why Tulane QB transfer Darian Mensah along with select players from the portal will begin moving Duke into the upper tier of the conference. Duke Depth and experience are key factors on the defensive side of the ball as well. It takes time recruiting and dipping into the Transfer Portal to bring a solid product together. Last year's record of 9-4 may be more of a challenge to match as most of the ACC is also building programs of note but it will be clear to fans and definitely opponents that the Blue Devils have chosen not to snooze. Listen, like and subscribe to ACC Nation podcast, streaming radio and YouTube for more conference content.

We're back with DBR Bites #113, where we had plans to continue our discussion of some news items...until breaking news came down. Donald and Jason begin their discussion with the report from a few days ago that power conferences had agreed to a deal that would allow for the clearinghouse created by the House settlement to proceed with approving more deals by NIL collectives. However, a few minutes into that discussion, news broke of a new order that would turn that agreement on its head. We react to the breaking news and what it could mean for the whirlwind that is the NIL marketplace. After the break (and a chance to collect our breath), we get into some new rules changes by the ACC that are meant to curtail court/field storming and the influence of gambling in the game. We end with a fun exercise on college football programs and their perceived valuations if they were pro teams. Stick around to see where Duke end up on that list. Make sure you're following us! We are back with DBR Bites #111 as we have some small news to cover before we get to our summer overanalysis of short video clips! Donald and Jason quickly go though a couple of news items, beginning with Cooper Flagg. After dropping 31 points in a Summer League game, the Dallas Mavericks decided to shut him down for the rest of the summer. It's not a bad thing at all, and we discuss why it's okay that he's getting some rest. We also recap the latest episode of The Brotherhood Podcast, where Nik Khamenia was the featured guest. After the break, Duke Men's Basketball dropped some video highlights from a scrimmage they had over the weekend, and it's time to overanalyze it. We probably spent way too much time on the 3.5 minute video, but we're happy to break down what we saw as we get more video on how this Duke team is coming together. Make sure you're following us! Episode 738 is here, and after we get to some Duke updates, we begin our review of the results from the DBR Podcast Basketball Fan Survey! First, Donald and Jason discuss Justin Robinson getting a player development job with the Los Angeles Lakers, followed up by Kara Lawson leading Team USA to gold at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup. Both are big time accomplishments and we celebrate their success. We wrap up the news portion of the pod by highlighting Nik Khamenia's finish at the U-19 World Cup. After the break, we start to review the results from our Duke Basketball Fan Survey that over 1300 people filled out! We will be breaking up the results into a few episodes, and on this one we deal with the fan questions. How long have most DBR Podcast listeners been a fan? Which team is the most popular of all time? Which Duke players are considered the fan favorites? We break down those results for you all and we tell you how we answered the questions! The NBA Draft is in the books, and we celebrate Sion James and Tyrese Proctor hearing their names called in the 2nd round on Episode 737! Sion James made a surprise leap into the first 3 picks of the second round, and he'll join Kon Knueppel on the Charlotte Hornets. Tyrese Proctor had to wait a bit longer, but the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the 49th pick. Donald and Jason talk a bit about how they will fit with their teams and the fact that both are set up to potentially receive guaranteed multi-year deals. After the break, we get into some general thoughts on the NBA Draft and how to make it a bit better and more exciting and thought provoking. We heard it three times in the top ten of the NBA Draft... Adam Silver uttering the words "...from Duke University." Cooper Flagg, Kon Kneuppel, and Khaman Maluach live their dreams and heard their names called at the top of the 2025 NBA Draft. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down what the moment meant to each of these beloved Dukies and how they fit in their new NBA homes. Of note, each of them head to teams that are already loaded with members of the Brotherhood, which should make the transition just a little bit easier. After the break we dive into some other fun stuff including the outfits worn by the NBA draftees and word of a couple cool scheduling items for the 2025-26 Blue Devils that will provide interesting chances to see the team in Cameron. In our final draft preview episode prior to the 2025 NBA Draft, ESPN's Paul Biancardi gives us his take on the lottery prospects out of Duke; Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach. Plus, some of his favorite players who were not in his top 100 out of High School, and his outlook overall on the Hornets franchise. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We continue our NBA Draft previews on Episode 733 as Jay Bilas helps us analyze Khaman Maluach's potential in the NBA! ManMan is a player that could go as high as 3rd in the draft or as low as the end of the lottery, but no one doubts his abilities on defense. Jay thinks the real upside comes on offense, where may think that if he can continue to add to his game, he will be a force for years to come. After Jay's comments and predictions on Maluach, Donald and Jason give their takes as well. We saw what he did at Duke and how much he improved in just one year. The sky's the limit for Khaman Maluach in the NBA. After the break, we get into some of the rules changes that are coming to college basketball, particularly the addition of the coach's challenge. We discuss whether it's good for the game and we get into some of the other rules changes we would bring to make the games more exciting and limit the delays. Donald and Jason hear once again from Jay Bilas, who gives his thoughts on Proctor's game in the NBA and what kind of role he can create for himself. We discuss what he needs to improve and of course, Jay predicts where he will be taken in the NBA Draft. After the break, we react to Jay's thoughts on Tyrese Proctor and his NBA prospects, giving our own draft predictions. It's that time of year again! The NBA Draft is upon us and we welcome Jay Bilas back to the DBR Podcast to break down the 5 Duke Blue Devils who could hear their names called. On Episode 731, we begin our series by reviewing Sion James. Before we get to Sion's chances, Jay first gives us his thoughts on the overall draft. It's viewed as a deep draft, but Jay discusses some of the things to watch as the draft unfolds as well as how the current state of college basketball may have affected the draft eligible pool. We then get to Sion James and what he brings to the table. What do NBA teams like about him? Where can he improve at the next level? What kind of role can he play? Jay provides his analysis on all of that and predicts where in the draft Sion James could go. After Jay gives his thoughts, Donald and Jason recap it all and provide their own predictions on where in the draft Sion could hear his name called. The cool thing about the summer is that when we get any nuggets about how the team is shaping up, we get to overscrutinize it! Thanks to some intel we received from K Academy, we're able to discuss some notes about the first practices of the summer on DBR Bites #108. Jason received some tips about how some of the Duke players did in a practice done behind closed doors, so he and Donald go through some of the information we received. We discus the buzz around Isaiah Evans and Nik Khamenia, how Cameron Boozer is looking early on, and updates on Maliq Brown's recovery from the shoulder injuries that plagued him in the back half of last season. And finally, there is a report on the newest commitment, Sebastian Wilkins. Sounds like this team is coming together! Make sure you're following us! The Southeastern 16 crew of Graham Doty, Jay Greeson and Chris Lee analyze the draw in the Athens Regional of the 2025 NCAA baseball tournament. Topics include: Georgia might have more power than any team in the country; the Bulldogs had a staggering eight players bash double-digit homers in the regular season. First-team all-SEC pick Slate Alford provides a steady, veteran presence at third, Robbie Burnett (20 HR, 17 SB) was one of the SEC's best all-around outfielders and first baseman Ryland Zaborowski is back after injury and at full strength, could be the best of them all. Georgia struggled to find answers on the mound when it came to bullpen depth at times, but the Bulldogs have a ton of power arms and a starting duo of Leighton Finley and Brian Curley that give them a chance to beat anyone. Duke's inclusion in the regional adds more big power to scene this weekend at Foley Field, with Ben Miller (18 HR) the biggest threat among a lineup and bench that can take teams out of the yard throughout. Reid Easterly, Ryan Calvert and Mark HIndy have been the Blue Devils' most effective arms; the Blue Devils have trouble keeping opponents inside the yard but are talented enough to advance. Could Oklahoma State be a sleeper? The Cowboys weren't considered an NCAA tournament team until season's end, but coach Josh Holliday had his team peaking at the right time. OSU is one of the better teams in the tournament at preventing home runs and Harrison Bodendorft (2.77 ERA) is a legitimate starting ace, while Sean Youngerman (2.08) was tremendous out of the bullpen and Nolan Schubart (17 HR) provides some of the biggest power in the college game. Binghamton arrives in Athens after winning the America East tournament. The Bearcats will need good things from starter Hayden Tarsia and big tournaments from power bats Evin Sullivan (13 HR) and Freddy Forgione (14) to compete.
