Dylan Jones – writer, former editor of i-D, Arena and GQ - was 15 in 1975 and dressed like Henry McCullough of Wings (“a lot of denim and silk scarves”), a time he thinks had enormous influence on the following five decades. There are many highlights in his latest book ‘1975: The Year The World Forgot', a lot of them discussed here with David and Mark, including … … the lasting impact of the cover of Patti Smith's Horses. … the “frightening” Millie Jackson, 50 years ahead of her time. … why Blood On The Tracks was the first middle-aged rock album. … the information black-out and the value of the ‘70s rock press - particularly Street Life – for such experimental music. … how the sarcasm of Steely Dan still feels contemporary – “Donald Trump is a figure they could have made up 50 years ago”. … the three key rhythms of the ‘70s – Fela Kuti's afro-beat, James Brown's funk and Klaus Dinger's Neu!-beat. … the reason Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby is 17 minutes long. … how Brian Eno's accident led to the birth of ambient music. … “writing about pop music allows you to write about anything”. … how the sophistication and intellect of the mid-‘70s was pilloried in Punk's Year Zero. … the Quiet Storm genre - aka “foreplay music” – from Sade to Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. ... the unrecognised power of the female record-buyer and the sexism of the rock press. … and the greatest record of 1975! It's a return trip down the Media Path for Vicki and John and this time Bob is along for fun, games and Cowsill family lore! We welcome back Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who recently joined us to talk about their collaboration on a new album of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill, 'Long After the Fire', plus fellow founding Cowsills member, Bob Cowsill joins the conversation. We start at the dawn of Vicki's Cowsills journey, as a fan who became a friend who became a spouse. A seven-year-old, Vicki's big sister Debbi said, “You know, there's a girl your age in this band.” Vicki was instantly sold and she spent her allowance savings on the We Can Fly album. In 1977, when Vicki learned that a friend of a friend knew Bob's Cowsill, Vicki gave him a call to talk vocal harmonies. Vicki and Debbi were still bubbling under as The Bangs and they went to see The Cowsills perform at a local club. Just a few years later, Bob found himself invited to The Bangles Platinum party and John recounts his meet-cute with Vicki, right before his marriage to someone else!We test the Cowsill/Peterson crew on self-knowledge with a game we like to call 'Are You Better Informed Than Google?', Vicki and John share what took them two married decades to work together and Bob gives his perspective on John and Vicki's new album of Billy and Barry Cowsill covers.Bob and John share how their generational split affected their musical influences and experiences within the band and we hear about the earliest days of the Cowsills, their father Bud's early clash with brother Richard, performing at Brown frat parties as young kids and their first demo song recordings. And the games continue as everyone takes on some Cowsills Trivia Roulette from Becky Presley's Cowsills site!In recommendations--Fritz: Book, Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie CourogenWeezy: Hulu Series, Devil in the FamilyPath Points of Interest:The CowsillsBecky Presley's Cowsills PageVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookBecky Presley TriviaMiss May Does Not Exist: The Live And Work Of Elaine May, Hollywood's Hidden Genius by Carrie CourogenDevil in the Family
Lecture one of a series on the 'Doctrine of Atonement', delivered by Dr. Mildred Bangs Wynkoop during the fall of 1979 at Nazarene Theological Seminary. Dr. Wynkoop was a remarkable voice in the Church of the Nazarene—a writer, pastor, missionary, and theologian whose influence still resonates today. Her most celebrated works are Foundations of Wesleyan-Arminian Theology and A Theology of Love: The Dynamic of Wesleyanism, both of which continue to shape contemporary Wesleyan thought. Her ministry journey spanned the globe and the academy. She pastored churches in California and Oregon, taught at George Fox Evangelical Seminary, and served as the founding president of Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary. She also taught in Taiwan before returning to the United States to serve as Professor of Theology at Trevecca Nazarene College (1966–1976) and later at Nazarene Theological Seminary (1976–1979). Throughout her century-long life and ministry, Dr. Wynkoop met Phineas Bresee, studied under H. Orton Wiley and Olive Winchester, and left a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues across four Nazarene institutions—having studied at Point Loma Nazarene University and Northwest Nazarene University, and having taught at Trevecca Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary. *These recordings, captured initially in 1979, have been substantially restored. While Dr. Wynkoop's voice has been clarified, student questions during Q&A segments may be difficult to discern. Her responses, however, remain clear and impactful.* Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning

Step aside, Mona Lisa—Birkenstocks tried to take a step into the art world, but Germany's high court wasn't buying it—literally! This week on Wisdom from the Wardrobe, we unpack the legal battle where Birkenstock argued their shoes were art, only to be told they're just… shoes. (Ouch!) Love them or loathe them, the case had us wondering: when it comes to this iconic (yet divisive) footwear, is it frumpy or fabulous? And more broadly—is all fashion art, or just function? Then, we trade footwear for follicles as Kat, "The Queen of Kutz" from Salon 8 in Bellevue joins us to talk Spring/Summer 2025 hair trends. Say goodbye to cool, icy tones and those trendy but tired mushroom blondes—this season, it's all about warmth! Think sun-kissed soft blondes, rich chocolatey brunettes that add glow to your skin, and an effortless, polished vibe that says “put together” without screaming high maintenance. As for the cut of the moment? The Pixie is back! With sharp lines that lift the face, it's a bold, fresh look making waves. And for the gents? It's all about intentional grooming—because looking effortlessly sharp takes a little strategy. Tune in for style, sass, and expert hair tips that will keep you ahead of the trend curve. Sarah roped Susie into watching Love is Blind and now they have to talk about it (even though Susie is mad about it). We discuss the particular hellscape that is a reality tv reunion and the trauma it provides. We discuss why bangs are never the answer and you should never get a tattoo when you're in the throes of life's worst moments. Sarah talks about Belle Gibson who became a successful influencer, cookbook author, and lifestyle blogger based on a lie that she had terminal cancer she was treating homeopathically. We find out why young people aren't getting romantically involved and debate whether that's a bad or good thing. And we hear why reality tv causes insecurity in men and women in different ways. Plus, Susie explains what a "bed party" is and why people are spending lots of money for an instagram picture celebrating their kid going to college.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get 20% OFF by going to https://www.honeylove.com/braincandy! #honeylovepodGet up to 35% off PLUS 2 free gifts using code BRAINCANDY at https://shopbeam.com/BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

While you were watching the Super Bowl, Mark was in studio introducing Nicole and the Dark Minions to 2 glittery new friends he made in 2023: Bangs the Clown and comedian/astrologer Kristy Belich Bangs talked about her path to being the Bettie Page of clowns, as she was a 2nd generation clown whose mother dressed her up to march around her in parades, leading her to enroll in clown school where she learned to trust her instincts which have led to her being one of the sexiest clowns on the burlesque circuit. She talks about the hazards of eating glass and spitting fire as well as not impressing the jaded tourists at Morongo Casino even though she was walking barefoot on broken glass (!) Kristy grew up in Washington DC, where she took care of horses by some of the most powerful people in the world and she got dismayed by the process of legislating as well as working on scientific research for animals and humans. She got into comedy as a way to cope with her PTSD from what she saw and started astrology as a result of an unusual reading of her vagina. She also relates the awful (and wet) consequences that can occur when you touch an audience member in West Virginia. Kristy also brought her Tarot Cards and gave readings to Bangs and Nicole who appear to have bright and prosperous futures ahead of them. Bangs photo by Celia Sanchez. It's been a minute since I've put out a new show, and so I thought maybe I'd let you in on what has been keeping me so busy. A couple years ago, I started working on an oral history project funded by the city- appropriately titled The Olympia Music History Project. We (myself, Mariella Luz and Kelsey Smith) have since broken off from the city into our own nonprofit organization, and I'm excited to announce that we are launching olympiamusichistory.org on New Year's Day, 2025! So let me tell you about what this is: I was a part of a team that interviewed 30 people who were doing significant things in Olympia's legendary indie music scene between 1980-2002. We spoke with folks from globally revered bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and The Gossip, as well as hometown heroes including Young Pioneers, The Noses, Fitz of Depression, even Olympia's only known ska band of that era, Engine 54. I've learned so much working on this project- and I've heard all the interviews several times, because I'm the guy who edited them. Have you ever seen that T-Shirt that says “Reading is Sexy?” That was designed by Sarah Utter, the singer and guitarist from The Bangs. Allegedly Patrick Swayze lived here at some point, but I don't know if he ever got out to any punk shows. And yeah, Nirvana was a part of our scene for a while too, I forget what happened after they moved to Seattle. And there were all these festivals- International Pop Underground Convention in 1991, The YoYo A Go Go festivals after that, Ladyfest- which became an international series- and a groundbreaking, grassroots rock opera called The Transfused. All these things happened in that 22-year window. My interview with a guy named John Foster focuses on a couple of crucial things happening, that the scene- at least in part- owes its existence. The first one is the enactment of the Green Line Policy at KAOS- that's KAOS, 89.3 FM, Olympia- a game-changing move making it against the rules to play any less than 80% independently released music. That had a huge impact on a lot of creative people that tuned in. The second is the publication of OP Magazine, a dense zine focused on independent music of every kind, and featured contributing writers like Matt Groening, Eugene Chadbourne, Jonathan Richman, on and on. This magazine was globally distributed from right here in Olympia, and served as a regularly updated encyclopedia of indie music- and where to get it. Basically, it was like a precursor to something in-between Pitchfork and Bandcamp, in the pre-internet dark ages. John Foster was at the helm for both of these endeavors, and he was one of the people I interviewed for the Olympia Music History Project, and here is our conversation, recorded in the historic Rockway-Leland building downtown.

What's up Bros? We had so much to talk about with RHOSLC this week, that we decided to break this up into a 2 parter. In Part 1, Lisa and Heather recap the trip to Palm Springs. Heather is still implying that she was not invited to the trip, even though we watched Bronwyn extend a (somewhat backhanded) olive branch. Heather has somehow decided that she is the 'bouncer' of the group, and uses last years experience with Monica as a defense when it comes to accepting newbies into the group. We get to see more Todd and Bronwyn and in our personal opinion, we do not care for how Todd is continuing to speak to her. Its condescending and feels more like a father reprimanding a child than it does a spouse speaking to their partner. Again, Todd, this is a housewives show, she HAS to mix it up and throw some shade. However, in her confessionals, it does seem like Bronwyn is aware of the dynamic and isn't happy with it herself. Angie K has an emotional scene with her dad discussing her late mother and her struggles with alcohol. In a year full of shows and castmembers dealing with substance abuse problems, this is an important scene that does humanize alcoholism. It shows the damage it does to those involved, and also the struggle of recognizing its an illness and the work it takes to forgive. Mary plans an Audrey Hepburn party to distract from her own struggles with Robert Jr. and we will get into the whole party in part 2! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
What's up Bros? Welcome to part 2 of our RHOSLC recap, and this episode is all Audrey Hepburn party. There is a lot of tension in the group lingering from the Palm Springs trip. But more importantly, the theme of this party has a goal, Mary wants to see everyones style. Meredith steals the show with what can only be referred to as either a toupee or Ali-Ba-bangs. Lisa copies Mary and wears her fit from WWHL. The drama begins at lunch when Mary gives a toast and Heather decides to call out Bronwyn immediately and thanks Mary for 'not leaving anyone out'. Again, the whole thing is trivial considering Bronwyn DID invite Heather. Regardless of what Bronwyn says, Heather takes issue with it. Bronwyn calls out Heather for spinning literally everything she says, and we watch in real time as Heather does just that. Britani arrives late and after witnessing a 'kumbaya' moment with Heather and Bronwyn, she wants her own moment. But before we can get there, she originally has beef with Bronwyn but sets her sights on Angie K for bringing wine to her Mormon party. Even though she drinks every episode and is currently involved with 3 men. No judgement here, but that seems contradictory. She ends up giving an apology to Bronwyn who is skeptical to say the least. Meredith finishes off the drama by threatening (not according to her) Angie that if she wants to go low it wont be good for anyone. She is still yammering on about this podcast episode Shawn was on, and when she tries to play the episode, Whitney grabs her phone. Mary tries to deescalate and warns everyone involved, if you cant play nice then get out. Meredith wastes no time and leaves claiming that she was kicked out. So dramatic... But what an episode, what a season, what a cast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In what may be one of the most entertaining episodes of any Real Housewives franchise, we bear witness to several mic drop moments from women who have honed skills of verbal battle. Early on, we see our gruff Tater Todd, arms folded, and delivering a stern performance review of "did not meet expectations" to his direct report. Then, a fairytale presentation of Mary's Breakfast at Tiffany's event is littered with butlers, decor, and vitriol as the women address beefs old and new. Despite wearing thick winter garb, Heather comes in hot and aiming for Bronwyn, Angie and Meredith face off, Meredith and Whitney have a run in, everyone comes for Meredith's unique hairpiece choice, and Britani continues to look for love and attention in all the wrong places. Dylan is back for one more episode this week, and he starts with the tea (or rather, the scoop) from a very silly Bravo event in NYC this week. Then, he reacts to the Southern Hospitality trailer, and looks ahead to the packed Bravo lineup for the beginning of 2025. Then, he heads to SLC in 17C, recapping this week's episode from top to bottom. How are you doing? Are you okay? Are you staying connected to the other people in your life who share your values and are feeling the same way that you are right now?On today's podcast, we're starting the process of picking up the pieces. We're taking care of ourselves, we're finding reasons to stay hopeful, and we are NOT getting trauma bangs! We were so grateful this week to be joined by Connie Schultz. Connie is a writer, journalism professor, and the wife of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. The last time she was on the pod, she said she was “built for happy” and her Substack is called Hopefully Yours… needless to say, her uplifting energy was exactly what we needed. And don't misunderstand - she and Sherrod were disappointed and heartbroken by the results of last Tuesday, both in the presidential race and in Sherrod's own. But she had so much wisdom to share about how she's processing the election and the perspective of age. We've been through hard things before and found a way to keep moving forward, and we'll do it again. It's what we do.If you need a comforting voice or advice for how to talk to your kids or friends about what happened, we hope you'll find a little help and hope in this episode. For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue.
