Quant on fait une émission consacrée au rock, notamment progressif, mais même plus généralement  inspiré des 60 / 70's, on ne peut que constater la raréfaction tout autant progressive des talents à l'origine de ce courant, inéluctablement de saison en saison et cette dernière en aura été cruellement exemplaire… Mais reste cet héritage sans cesse remis sur le métier par de compétences, le numéro de ce soir en est donc encore un exemple frappant. Commençons donc par l'hommage : née David Palmer, sexuellement réassignée en 2003 pour devenir à l'état civil DEE PALMER, l'ex claviériste-arrangeuse de JETHRO TULL a donc à son tour rejoint notre Emile pour aller "torcher le cul du firmament" cette semaine. Dee avait une formation de musique classique, et l'on sait à quel point le rock progressif est friand de ce genre de talents. Ainsi avant même l'acte de naissance officielle de ce courant musical, Ian Anderson faisait appel aux compétences d'arrangeuse orchestrale de Dee sur le 1er album du groupe "This Was" en 1968, collaboration qui restera systématique puis évoluant vers le poste de musicienne de session pour finalement accéder à celui de co-claviériste officielle et membre à part entière du groupe entre les albums "Songs From The Wood" (1997) à "Stormwatch" en 1979 et dont je vous propose un extrait ici. Par la suite, Dee sera arrangeuse pour divers projets dont cinématographiques. Outre sa participation à Jethro Tull, je retiens de son talent le magnifique album de collaboration entre les membres de Yes (époque 1993 avec Jon Anderson, Steve Howe et Bill Bruford de retour ponctuel) et le London Philarmonic Orchestra pour le magnifique  "Symphonic Music Of Yes". Dee Palmer avait 88 ans. Mais on en a encore sous le coude, et à commencer par TIMELESS dont je vous présentais le premier album il y a seulement quelques mois alors que les deux membres de ce duo sont des musiciens expérimentés, chacun ayant suivi son chemin indépendamment car séparés par l'océan l'Atlantique, ce qui n'est pas rien ! Mais par la grâce des technologies actuelles, nos sages et expérimentés amis Tim Taylor aux USA et Les Shaw en Angleterre ont donc produit ce bel ouvrage que je vous recommande chaudement : " The Wolf Of Time", pas mal du tout pour des p'tits jeunes !! Et comme j'avais envie à mon tour de faire plaisir au très sympathique Les (à l'écriture et au chant de Timeless), avec lequel j'ai pu avoir quelques échanges au cours desquels il évoquait un titre de FAMILY sur le second album de la bande à Roger Chapman (Family Entertainment de 1969), je lui dédicace donc bien volontiers ce titre, d'autant que le plaisir est partagé ! Roger Chapman qui s'est illustré cette année par sa participation aux concerts du Tribute Band espagnol OPUS ONE, un projet consacré au Maestro Mike Oldfield et qui à déjà fait appel aux voix emblématiques utilisées par Oldfield telles que Maggie Reilly, Anita Hegerland ou encore Barry Palmer et même la fille du regretté Kevin Ayers ! Le seul défaut d'Opus One est de ne pas quitter la péninsule ibérique. Va falloir que je descende moi-même ?!          Autre anglais devenu familier d'Amarok : RICHARD ANTHONY BEAN. Rappelez vous en fin d'année 2025 je vous présentais son nouvel album "Geostrophic Pathways". J'avais par ailleurs diffusé l'extrait "Luminous". Ce soir je reviens sur ce titre dans une version alternative parue cette année en single, avec arrangements et jeux de guitare de PAUL LANDRY. Nos deux amis ont la même appétence pour ces musiques atmosphériques et j'ai toujours plaisir à faire connaître à mon modeste niveau ces deux illustres musiciens anglais tellement sous représentés de ce côté-ci de la Manche !     "Octane" est un carburant (comportant 8 atomes de carbone pour X etc...ne m'en demandez pas trop quand même !!) et ce chiffre 8 correspond aussi à l'ordre chronologique de sorties des galettes fabriquées à base de pétrole par SPOCK'S BEARD. Alors la photo d'une pompe à essence sur la pochette est plus que justifiée ! Au-delà de ces considérations esthétiques, l'album de D'Virgilio, Morse and Co paru en 2005 proposait un son assez "rock" (vous me direz on est la pour ça ! ) mais un rock plus direct et sans doute plus accessible en tout cas, toujours plaisant à écouter aujourd'hui !    Et puisqu'on est dans la branche "metal" du rock progressif, permettez moi de vous représenter une nouvelle fois cette formation venue de Tours :  ELEMENTS. Un son musclé certes mais également accessible, s'approchant parfois de la pop et leur 1er album "Nouvelle Ere" par en 2023 inaugure sans aucun doute une nouvelle scène française progressive avec laquelle il faudra compter et avec grand plaisir ! Ils seront de passage à Nantes dans le cadre du PROG NIGHT au Floride ce 26 juin, aux côtés d'Unsquare et d'HamaSaari, qu'on se le dise ! Notre régulier détour italien nous emmène cette fois en Sicile avec ALCANTARA, un groupe que je découvre avec ce 2ème album "Tamam Shud" sorti l'année dernière. Un album qui se mérite, il faut en effet quelques écoutes pour s'approprier son contenu dont la musique croise les routes du Rock Progressif, psychédélique et du blues. Le groupe revendique des influences chez Pink Floyd et Riverside notamment et considère, à juste titre, qu'il se parcours de façon immersive et non comme on écoute une playlist ou une compilation. Je valide et souscrit ! Un album dont les écoutes au casque vous rendent assez vite addict et si vous tombez sous le charme italien, sachez qu'un album live sera publié dès demain vendredi ! Chouette, j'ai tout l'été pour m'y plonger !  En 1978, THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT publiait son 3ème opus : "Pyramid", qui après "The Tales..." et "I Robot", prenait un virage plus pop préfigurant l'orientation du groupe dans les 80's à venir mais toujours avec cette exigence ne serait-ce que la pour la qualité de production irréprochable ! Faut dire que MR PARSONS avait quelques expériences enrichissantes sur son CV, notamment auprès de George Martin et des Beatles (on le voit même presque encore gamin sur le toit de "Apple" lors de ce célèbre et ultime concert sauvage des "Fab Four" en 1969). Quant à "Pyramid", il s'agit d'un album concept autour des pyramides de Gizeh. Peut-être a-t-il été inspiré par l'art-work de la pochette de "Dark Side Of The Moon" dont il reste sans doute l'ingénieur du son le plus envié de la profession !  J'espère qu'à part Amarok, vous écoutez plus généralement la radio, surtout SUN bien sur et notamment l'émission SUN MUSIC ADDICT ! Il s'agit d'un programme permettant à des talents régionaux émergents de jouer en live dans nos beaux studios nantais avec, cerise sur la gâteau, de la vidéo !  C'est à l'occasion de l'une de ces séances que vous avez alors peut-être entendu (et vu)  .RESSAC. pour la première fois. Une belle fusion, une musique introspective qui, pour ce qui me concerne, n'est pas tombée dans l'oreille d'un sourd ! Si j'évoquais en début d'émission ces artistes qui le temps passant partent les un après les autres, ils restent éternels par leurs œuvres bien sur mais je crois aussi par l'héritage qu'ils laissent. Alors en voyant émerger ces quatre copains nantais talentueux que sont Simon, Charles, Nicolas et Ewen fondateurs de ce groupe .RESSAC. , je suis rassuré ! Non seulement ils perpétuent l'âme de leurs prédécesseurs mais renouvelle ces musiques offrant peut-être à Amarok quelques beau jours et surtout nous offrent autre chose que le "mainstream" des sentiers battus de la star'ac !  D'ailleurs vous pourrez les voir très prochainement en sortie de résidence, non pas au Château de Dammarie-Les-lys mais au FERAILLEUR à Nantes ce mardi 23 juin, avis à la population ! En attendant, un nouvel extrait de leur premier EP éponyme dans ce numéro. Pour clôturer cette émission, retour en Angleterre et sur un album sorti il y un peu plus d'un mois mais tellement apprécié que j'avais envie de m'en resservir une tranche et de vous en faire profiter aussi ! THE PARADOX TWIN a publié son 3ème album (après un premier essai très réussi et d'ailleurs justement acclamé par la presse en 2018, essai transformé ensuite pour le 2ème opus ! ). "A Romance Of Many Dimensions" tout juste sorti des presses à CD est produit par John Mitchell (d'Arena notamment) qui a les oreilles aussi bien affutées que celles de Spock ! J'espère que vous aimez le saxophone ! A l'occasion de la présence de l'excellent JOHN HELLIWELL, LE saxophoniste de SUPERTRAMP durant tout ce week-end à Blain (44) dans le cadre du festival MOVIES ON THE ROCKS, la 1ère partie de ce numéro est consacré au Maître de Cérémonie des super clochards. Sans doute l'ultime occasion de voir cette légende dans la région !  A L'origine de ce festival, le nantais ALAN SIMON entre autres cordes à son arc, auteur-compositeur et réalisateur. Donc bien légitime pour organiser cet évènement alliant 7ème Art et rock ! L'occasion de vous faire quelques toiles (dès ce vendredi soir avec "Woodstock") et d'assister à des concerts, notamment de notre John et son "Big Tramp" qui reprendra les grands standards de Supertramp à la sauce jazz, mais aussi CALI et pour la fin en apothéose dimanche soir : Excalibur, le fameux concert mythique (5 albums au compteur depuis sa création par Alan en 1998, qui a réuni autour de la Table Ronde un grand nombre de Ladies et Chevaliers souvent issus de la scène progressive et souvent entendus dans cette émission ! ).  Durant la première demi-heure de cet épisode d'Amarok on retrouve donc John et son instrument sur un extrait live (histoire de vous mettre dans l'ambiance ! ) de SUPERTRAMP, le fameux enregistrement au Pavillon de Paris en 1979 avec un titre vocalement interprété par le regretté Rick Davies, le co-fondateur de la formation qui nous a quittés il y a quelques mois (je vous renvoie au replay du numéro d'Amarok du 11/09/2025, 2ème numéro de la saison qui lui était en grande partie consacrée.). Puis John avec sa formation jazz pour une reprise du répertoire de ses anciens collègues sur l'album "JOHN HELLIWELL' Supertramp Big Tramp" paru l'année dernière. Depuis plusieurs années, John se produit et sort des albums de jazz, avec un son tout à son image sereine, flegmatique à l'anglaise et pour l'avoir rencontré à quelques reprises, charmant et accessible. Bref, il ressemble à sa façon de jouer !  Je ne pouvais pas évoquer ce festival organisé par ALAN SIMON et qui se terminera dimanche soir par des extraits de sa fameuse saga Excalibur, sans vous en proposer un bel exemple ! J'ai choisi un titre issu de l'album le plus récent de l'épopée, le volume V : "Moves, Cry, Act, Clash!" sorti en 2021. Sur cet extrait, John, of course, mais aussi Jesse Siebenberg au chant (le fils du batteur de Supertramp Bob Siebenberg et qui avait rejoint le groupe aux côtés de son père il y a quelques années). Enfin, le magicien de la six cordes , ex-Genesis : STEVE HACKETT himself !  Cette première partie se termine avec PINK FLOYD, dont le guitariste David Gilmour avait été invité sur le titre éponyme de l'album "Brother Where You Bound" de Supertramp paru en 1985. Une fresque déjà incroyable mais que Gilmour avait sublimée ! Le nouveau patron du Floyd invitera à son tour John pour le nouvel album du Floyd "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" en 1987 et qu'on retrouve donc encore ici. A notez pour l'anecdote que ces deux albums évoqués sont particuliers pour chaque groupe : premier disque sans Roger Hodgon pour l'un et sans Roger Waters pour l'autre …  Laissons John reprendre son souffle pour le festival de Blain.  Mais le dernier titre de cette première partie de l'émission est encore du PINK FLOYD (veinards ! ). Cela dit j'aurais préféré me passer d'avoir à rendre cet hommage. En effet, vendredi dernier, le 22 mai, Dick Parry s'en est allé… Les fans du Floyd savent la contribution que ce saxophoniste a pu apporter sur quelques uns de leurs albums et concerts des 70's : "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here" et son retour sur l'album "The Divison Bell" en 1994 ainsi que sur le live consécutif "Pulse". J'ai eu la chance d'assister à l'un de ces concerts de 1994, quoi qu'on en dise sur le Floyd post-Waters, c'était fabuleux !  Et puis pour clore cette partie saxo de l'émission, sachez qu'un grand musicien nous a quittés cette semaine : SONNY Rollins (qui s'était illustré aux côtés et entre autres de Miles Davis, Charlie Parker ou encre John Coltrane, nous a quitté ce lundi à l'âge vénérable de 95 ans (le souffle ça conserve !)    Pour la seconde partie de l'émission, on commence avec une plongée les 70's avec CAMEL, vu les températures, voilà un groupe de circonstances, hydratez vous !! A ces fins, je vous ai choisi un extrait de "Rain Dances" de 1977 et l'occasion d'évoquer encore un peu l'instrument guest de la 1ère partie de l'émission puisque cet album est marqué par l'arrivée de Mel Collins au saxo, qui pour expérience sur son CV, peut s'enorgueillir d'y inscrire King Crimson. Collins qu'on retrouvera notamment chez Alan Parsons Project dans les 80's et qui surtout sera demandé par tous les plus grands. On le retrouvera alors dans une liste de collaborations plus grandes que mon bras, et pourtant j'ai le bras long !! L'exploration de l'excellent "Out Of Step" des non moins talentueux ESTHESIS se poursuit avec cette fois, un instrumental, titre de clôture de l'album. Et si Aurélien Goude est à l'origine du projet Esthesis, son auteur-compositeur, ce titre a la particularité d'être co-signé avec ses musiciens talentueux qui font partie de l'esthétique sonore du groupe. Bravo à Arnaud (batterie), Marc (basse), Rémi (guitare) et Mathilde (vocaux) car Aurélien, outre ses capacités d'écriture, a aussi ce talent de réunir les gens compétent nécessaires pour faire fonctionner son projet, comme je vous incite à le constater le 26 septembre prochain à l'Alhambra de Paris 1ère partie des cultissimes IQ  ! Avertissement pour le titre suivant : SUNO est à la manœuvre. Normalement pour moi c'est un gros mot ! Il s'agit en effet du célèbre logiciel de création par IA. Et par principe j'évite d'en diffuser. Toutefois, l'histoire de DICK DER HEIJDE est particulière. Né en 1963, ce musicien néerlandais fut victime d'un AVC à l'âge de 28. Totalement paralysé, cet amateur de rock progressif ne pourra s'exprimer que par clignement de l'œil pour communiquer puis interagir avec un ordinateur. Il deviendra critique musical ayant ,de fait, du renoncer à la pratique musicale.  Mais la technologie apportée par l'IA vient de lui changer la vie en lui permettant par un usage intelligent (humainement), d'exprimer musicalement ses émotions et notamment son syndrome d'enfermement. Alors oui, la production, les instruments et même le chant sont crées artificiellement, mais l'émotion exprimée est bien humaine. Alors après réflexion j'ai décidé de diffuser un extrait de son 1er album, fort justement intitulé  "Locked In". Je n'encourage pas dans Amarok l'usage de l'IA aux fins de création mais dans ce contexte bien précis et touché par l'histoire de Dick,  j'avais à cœur de relayer les émotions qu'il à légitimement souhaité (et je pense réussi) à y véhiculer. Savez-vous que la Lorraine est hardie !! Je sais elle est facile ! En revanche le musicien suivant qui en est originaire est exigent et compétent ! Dans tous les domaines :  production, ingé-son, multi-instrumentiste (même si la guitare reste son jouet de prédilection),  ayant collaboré avec nombre d'artistes tels que Aurore Reichert (Mira Cetii), Ange (et aussi l'ex-Ange Caroline Crozat). D'ailleurs séraphin Palméri,  le nouveau claviériste de la formation qui m'est chère, à participé aux synthés sur le nouvel album de JEAN-PASCAL BOFFO : "Inner World'". Comme sur le précédent opus, Fred Kempf était également de la partie. Encore une très belle réussite de Jean-Pascal que j'ai grand plaisir à vous recommander !  Pour terminer ce dernier numéro du mois, retour sur le JETHRO TULL des années 70, plus précisément en 1971 avec "Aqualung", ici dans sa version dépoussiérée par un savant remixage opéré par Steven Wilson. Si Ian Anderson a relancé l'entreprise il y a quelques années avec de nouveaux musiciens, on a plaisir ici à retrouver un Martin Barre en forme à la six cordes, Maître du barré qui fût d'ailleurs l'un des fameux chevaliers de la Table Ronde de la saga Excalibur d'Alan Simon évoqué en début d'émission ! Ayons tout de même une pensée pour Mick Abrahams, décédé fin 2025. Il était le guitariste d'origine mais ne joua que sur le 1er album du groupe ("This Was" en 1968). AMAROK, chaque jeudi, à 20h

A ne pas louper le 16 mai : le BREIZH PROG REUNION, évènement breton qui réunira deux excellentes formations de la région à St Nolff (Morbihan) et qui pour l'occasion ont ouvert et fermé ce numéro. Pour commencer, honneur à SAQUARRAH, les ainés nés en 1992 et qui joueront à domicile. Depuis leurs débuts, avec quelques changements de line-up ils ont  produit un EP et trois albums. Le dernier opus en date remonte à 2024 et si vous avez loupé les diffusions d'extraits du très bon "The Runaway", séance de rattrapage dans ce numéro ! Avis aux amateurs de sons floydiens.  La clôture (en beauté ! ) de cet épisode a été confiée à PRYZME, l'autre groupe du BREIZH PROG REUNION, qui vient du département de l'Ile et Vilaine. Une formation qui s'est installée sur pas mal d'années au cours de la dernière décennie pour aboutir à un 1er album "Four Inches", lequel a d'ailleurs également fait les belles soirées de cette émission en 2021. Pour les avoir vus sur scène, je peux vous assurer de la compétence de nos gaillards bretons ! Leur second album "True Stories … And Other Lies" est sorti il y a un an et j'espère bien que vous n'avez pas loupé les extrait diffusés dans Amarok ! Nouvel extrait en fin d'émission, avis aux mêmes amateurs de musiques floydiennes avec également des influences de Yes ou Pat Métheny. Un album d'une grande richesse musicale qui mérite son écoute en immersion ! Entre ces deux groupes dont vous me donnerez des nouvelles, une belle surprise, également hexagonale : ESTHESIS. Rappelez-vous le 26 juin, en toute fin de la dernière saison, je vous présentais le premier single "The Frame" du nouvel album "Out Of Step" alors à paraître à la rentrée. Depuis, cet excellentissime 3ème opus du projet d'Aurélien Goude accompagne la saison 2025-2026 (et elle n'est pas terminée !). Or, une nouvelle version de ce single est parue hier, bien différente de l'originale. Réalisée par Vincent Blanot, cette alternative se veut plus lourde et frontale que celle de  l'album (plus hypnotique). Comme l'exprime Vincent, les deux faces d'une même pièce ! Vincent Blanot a pour l'occasion réenregistré bon nombres d'instruments. D'ailleurs ce n'est pas la première fois qu' Aurélien et Vincent collaborent, l'un sur un album de l'autre. Ah oui parce qu'il faut vous préciser que Vincent a aussi son projet, vous vous en souvenez sans doute car il a également été largement diffusé ici en son temps : BERLIN HEART, avec deux albums à son actif. Je dois avouer que j'étais assez dingue du 2ème "The Low Summit" sortie en 2022. Alors j'ai deux bonnes nouvelles concernant ces deux formations. ESTHESIS se produira à l'ALHAMBRA de Paris le 25 septembre et BERLIN HEART finalise son 3ème album. Vous pensez bien que je suis tout cela de près pour vous, vivement la prochaine saison ! En bonus, voici la vidéo de THE FRAME, BERLIN HEART REMIX ! Autre nouveauté mais cette fois totale pour moi car je ne connaissais pas DIFFERENT LIGHT. Formation à l'origine maltaise lors de sa création en 1994 et puis son fondateur Trevor Tabone s'est installé en République Tchèque, mettant en pause le projet pendant près de 10 ans. Il y reformera le groupe en 2008. En 2020 sort "Binary Suns Part 1 ", fort bien accueilli par la critique et il y a une dizaine de jours est parue la suite, "Binary Suns Part 2 - The Singularity" dont je vous présentais un 1er extrait dans ce numéro. Un rock progressif accessible, tirant vers la pop de bon goût. Une très belle découverte ! Ah au fait, sur leur CV, la première partie de Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets quand même !!   Comme l'actu était riche pour cet épisode, peu de rock prog de 1ère génération mais quand même, j'ai trouvé une petite place pour RENAISSANCE avec un extrait de "A Song For All Seasons" de 1978. Un album respectable et courageux alors que déferlait les vagues punk et new wave ... Faut dire que la production en avait été confiée aux bons soins de David Hentschel (Genesis, Peter Hamill, George Harrison, Elton John, Mike Oldfield, et j'en passe ! ). L'extrait que ce numéro était même parvenu à se faire une belle place dans les charts britanniques !  Notre ami canadien ALEX HENRY FOSTER revient avec une "presque" nouveauté. Un single comme le précédent, enregistré live lors de sa tournée européenne (cette fois en Belgique à Bocholt, le 16 novembre 2025) et également paru sur vinyle "fait maison" par notre artiste qui a plus d'une corde à son arc créatif ! Pourquoi "presque nouveauté" ? Parce que ce titre avait été écrit par Alex pour son ancien groupe Favorite Ennemies (qu'il a quitté en 2016). Vous pouvez donc en écouter une version différente sur l'album "Beetween Illness And Migration" sorti par la formation en 2014.  Cunégonde continue de se dévoiler tout au long de la saison. A moins de découvrir cette émission ce soir, vous n'êtes pas sans savoir que je parle évidemment du dernier album de notre groupe emblématique du rock progressif français : ANGE. Christian Décamps, vénérable membre fondateur de la formation a quitté la scène (avec brio) sur  celle de l'Olympia l'année dernière et s'il reste présent sur ce nouvel opus c'est surtout à l'écriture, la voix de l'Ange étant désormais confiée principalement à la relève, dignement représentée par son fils Tristan. Le titre proposé dans ce numéro est particulier. "Un Passage De Rêve" est le seul titre dont le texte ne soit pas au moins co-écrit par Christian (d'ailleurs sur la longue carrière du groupe, les texte non écrits de sa main se comptent sur les doigts d'une seule ! ) Si la musique est signée du guitariste et vocaliste Hassan Hajdi et de Tristan, les paroles sont de la plume d'un certain Michel Buzon, poète précoce (1er écrits publiés à l'âge de 19 ans en 1976) , également chanteur à texte et journaliste. Un titre fort émouvant interprété avec toute la sensibilité de Christian Décamps. Un petit tour en Pologne avec le 3ème opus de RIVERSIDE, le groupe, sans doute le plus représentatif de la scène de cette contrée si éloignée des légendes anglaises et pourtant tellement imprégnée ! Nous sommes en 2007, le groupe publie "Rapid Eye Movement" dont je vous proposais un extrait ce soir. Pour l'anecdote, seulement deux ans plus tard, l'album sera republié avec des titres en bonus dont un reprenant un extrait de "Shine On You Crazy Dimaond" de Pink Floyd, pas très cool pour les fans qui ont du remettre la main à la poche … Une dernière fraicheur dans ce numéro, le 1er album d'un groupe allemand : "Home" par BLOSSOM CULT. Attention, on entre ici dans un univers très métal prog ! Je vous ai choisi un titre relativement "soft" pour y aller doucement ! Mais ne vous y trompez pas, ce ne sont pas des fous furieux non plus, la couleur de leur musique ne les empêche pas d'exprimer un panel d'émotions ! La polarisation politique, l'accélération technologique et la perte de repères sociaux sont les thèmes que se propose d'aborder les Blossom Cult sur leur premier opus, à écouter bien chez soi : "Home" !  Enfin, THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT, l'autre formation 70's de ce numéro, également en 1978 avec  un extrait de leur 3ème album "Pyramid". Une actu marquée par l'anniversaire de la première production de ce projet co-fondé par l'ingé-son d'Abbey Road Alan Parsons avec le musicien et parolier Eric Woolfson. Cet été marquera en effet le cinquantième anniversaire du premier album d'APP : "Tales Of Mystery And Imagination" paru le 2 juillet 1976. A cette occasion plusieurs albums du groupe sont réédités en vinyle comme en CD.  Par ailleurs un ouvrage biographique de la fille d'Eric Woolfson (décédé en 2009) est sur le point d'être publié en espérant une traduction française  !  Thierry Joigny AMAROK, chaque jeudi, à 20h  

Duncan Mackay spent the 1970s at the keyboard of British popular and progressive music, often invisibly, yet seldom far from its most defining moments. MacKay first built a reputation in South Africa which brought him back to England where he joined Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, just as ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)’ reached number one, and it was at Abbey Road during those sessions that he first encountered producer Alan Parsons. That relationship drew him into the Alan Parsons Project and, through the same circle, into the studio with Kate Bush, on whose first three albums he played. He later joined 10cc after an impromptu jam with Rick Fenn led to an invitation to Strawberry Studios South, arriving in time for ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ and another number one. He also recorded with Camel and served as musical director for Elkie Brooks while maintaining a solo career. Now based in South Africa and working in his home studio he is free to undertake the most enjoyable recording project of his career, his new album with Mauritz Lotz, A Beautiful Madness. Scottish pop-rock legend David Paton is one of the most quietly influential musicians of the past fifty years. Born and raised in Edinburgh, David made his mark as the founder, lead singer, bassist, and chief songwriter for the 70s pop band Pilot — the group behind the timeless hits “Magic” and “January.” These catchy, melodic tracks flew up the UK Singles Charts in 1974 and 1975, cementing Pilot's place in the classic pop-rock hall of fame.Pilot began when David, fresh from playing in local Scottish bands and even a short stint with the Bay City Rollers, teamed up with the late Billy Lyall, a fellow ex-Bay City Roller and brilliant keyboardist. Alan Parsons cut his teeth as an assistant on the Beatles' Abby Road, and by 1973 he was the main engineer for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. Producing was the next step and, in 1975, the Scottish band Pilot had a top five it with the song "Magic". Parsons joined with songwriter and keyboardist Eric Woolfson and arranger Andrew Powell and, with Pilot and a number of session musicians vocalist, produced Tales of Mystery and Imagination in 1976. What was originally a one-off collaboration began a full studio band, stripped down for their first hit album I Robot and even further for the third album, Pyramid. Though pretty much an overlooked album in Parsons's catalogue, it features excellent songwriting by Eric Woolfson and the first vocal performances of bassist David Paton and former Zombies vocalist Colin Blunstone on one of the Project's records.

I first met Alan Parsons in 2004, when I interviewed him for Tape Op issue #42. We've been lucky enough to work together on Recording Academy presentations and meet up socially a few times after that, and I always thought we'd have fun doing a podcast, and as it was now 20 years later, it felt like a good time. Alan had also built his ParSonics Studio on his ranch in California, and a deluxe box set reissue of the Alan Parsons Project's Pyramid album was coming out soon, so we had quite a lot to talk about.
