What does it take to help channel one of the most singular voices in rap in an entirely new medium? Join us as we chat with novelist and screenwriter Aaron Philip Clark, co-author of the just-published thriller The Accomplice, written in collaboration with rapper and entertainment mogul Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Aaron is perhaps best known for his International Thriller Writers Award-nominated crime fiction series featuring Detective Trevor Finnegan (Blue Like Me, Under Color of Law), as well as for his standalone novels. His first book with 50 Cent introduces readers to Nia Adams, a New York-born, Texas-bred detective who always dreamed of becoming a Texas Ranger, who sets off on the tail of a hardened Vietnam vet bad guy who steals the secrets of the rich and powerful. In addition to writing fiction and screenplays, Aaron teaches creative writing at UCLA Extension, and he collaborates with a variety of public figures and luminaries. A brutal homicide sets an ex-cop and his former partner on the hunt for an enigmatic killer in a gripping thriller by the author of Under Color of Law.When former detective Trevor “Finn” Finnegan became a PI, he adopted a new mandate: catch the LAPD's worst in the act. While on surveillance in Venice Beach, Finn tails two potentially dirty cops: Detective Martin Riley and Finn's ex-partner, Detective Sally Munoz. Things take a deadly turn when an unknown assailant executes Riley and wounds Munoz. In an instant, Finn goes from private eye to eyewitness.Munoz needs Finn to help find Riley's killer, but doing so could blow his cover. She's an officer shaded by rumors. Maybe she's still a good cop—but maybe she's not. Finn's reluctance ends when his dear “uncle,” an ex-LAPD detective, is murdered, and it might be connected to Riley's death. To prevent more bloodshed and avoid becoming the next targets on the killer's list, Finn and Munoz will have to bury their complicated past, trust each other, and come face-to-face with painful secrets that could destroy them both.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Content warning: general discussion of police brutality against Black people. What if we told you that, at least partly, the reason that police brutality persists so strongly in America today is corruption in President Nixon's Air Force? Drunk Law School is back with the first episode of a special three-part series on qualified immunity, Under Color of Law, with the case that created qualified immunity as we know it: Harlow v. Fitzgerald (1982). Drinks: Gimlet and Gin Punch made in homage to Cato Alexander, the founding father of American cocktail making. The murder of George Floyd reinvigorated a national reckoning over police violence against Black people. And often, victims have no way to get justice. The reason? A hazy, convoluted legal doctrine known as "qualified immunity." Drunk Law School will return on Monday, July 20, with Under Color of Law: a special three-part series that explores the origin of qualified immunity and how it intersects with police brutality. In the meantime, the work of justice isn't finished. Breonna Taylor's killers are still free. Most U.S. cities have not passed meaningful police abolition. The United States still disproportionately kills and imprisons BIPOC, maintains segregation and unequal access to resources, and sits idly by while a global pandemic, largely controlled in nations with functioning governance, claims the lives of BIPOC at much higher rates than white people. The work continues. If you're new to the fight for justice, or if you're looking for reading material, places to donate, and materials with which to educate yourself, please see below. Here is the 53rd installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Joe Casey of Detroit-based post-punk band Protomartyr. I'm not going to lie, I dropped the ball on this one. My buddy Stephen told me about Protomartyr and their show at Live Fact in KL weeks before we were set to go there; but due to work and other commitments, I wasn't able to do much in the way of research. Luckily, Stephen joined us for the interview, and jumped in with his own questions - otherwise, this could very well have been a 5 minute long podcast. We discussed the history of Protomartyr, their songwriting process, and the origins behind some of their songs. We also discussed how the band's collaboration with Kelley Deal of the Breeders came about. My thanks to Joe for talking to us, to Stephen for keeping the conversation going, and to you for listening. TRACKLISTING: Machinist Man How He Lived After He Died taken from the album No Passion All Technique You Win Again taken from the Consolation E.P. Blues Festival taken from the Protomartyr/R. Ring split 7" Corpses in Regalia Here is the Thing taken from the album Relatives in Descent Come & See taken from the album Under Color of Official Right Why Does it Shake? taken from the album The Agent Intellect
Protomartyr: Detroit based musicians Greg Ahee (guitar) and Alex Leonard (drums) first began performing as a duo under the name Butt Babies. Soon they were joined by Joe Casey on vocals and once Scott Davidson joined the band on bass, Butt Babies transformed into Protomartyr. The band signed to Urinal Cake Records and released their debut album, No Passion All Technique in 2012 which was followed by 2014’s Under Color of Official Right in April 2014 via Hardly Art records. The critically acclaimed The Agent Intellect, followed in October 2015, as well as extensive touring throughout the US and Europe. After signing to Domino in 2017 their fourth effort saw the band make the long trek out to our shores to play a set of songs spanning their whole career. Recorded at the Foundry in Brisbane on the 15th of February 2018. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic.
