Interview by Kris PetersKnown for their raw and stripped-back sound, Death From Above 1979 have been described as everything from noise punk to dance punk, embodying a DIY ethos that Rolling Stone described as “noisy hardcore, gritty synths, and earnest screams.” The duo's relentless beats, searing guitars, and ferocious energy practically summon you to the dance floor.Death From Above 1979 return to Australia for a run of shows this April, marking the first time the band have visited this country in almost a decade and a half, first coming in 2005 and then again in 2011 for Parklife. Don't miss your chance to experience the explosive energy and sheer power of Death From Above 1979 live on their 20th Anniversary tour for their debut album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine. It promises to be an unforgettable salute to a record that still pulses with the same intensity as it did when it first detonated in 2004.You're a Woman, I'm a Machine contained edge-of-your-seat classics including Romantic Rights, Blood On Our Hands, Black History Month and Little Girls, but let's face it, every track is killer. A perfect, 10 out of 10 review from back in the day via Drowned In Sound, stated "It's not just music you're hearing - sweat, blood, spunk and beer are all audible, splattering these 11 tracks like a Pollock…. It's so simple, just two dudes making a right ol' racket, done with such spirit and delivered with such a purity - magnificently filthy.” HEAVY spoke with drummer/vocals Sebastien Grainger ahead of the tour to get the rundown, at one point asking what had changed with the band since they were here last 14 years ago."We had just started playing again after being broken up for five years or so," he recalled. "So that was like a reunion tour for us. And we didn't have a new record, we only had that first record - and we didn't make a new record until 2014. So in that time, in those 14 years, that's basically the… It's this whole second phase of the band, you know, the whole second period of the band was between 2011 and now. So, yeah, I mean, we made three LPs and toured around the world and, you know, had families and more children and all kinds of stuff."In the full interview, Sebastien discussed the band's upcoming tour in Australia, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine. He reflected on the band's evolution, including the release of three additional LPs, and the challenges of adapting their music for live performances, highlighting the unique energy generated through audience interaction rather than a traditional frontman approach. The conversation included insights into the album title's origin, inspired by a misheard phrase from his girlfriend. We also ran through the creative aspect of writing and recording You're A Woman, I'm a Machine free from expectation or pressures and how it set Death From Above 1979 on the path to which they find themselves today and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Duo-Bands? Easy, wir auch! Death From Above 1979 oder Royal Blood! IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Toronto and Montreal based trio, American Lips, have just announced the release of their latest 3-song maxi-single Waste of Crime on Ancient Fashion Records. American Lips features Death From Above 1979 drummer Sebastien Grainger and prolific producer Adrian Popovich, also known for his time in legendary Canadian rock act Tricky Woo. In explaining their newest offering the bands' latest one-sheet asks you to ponder, “Ever wondered what it would sound like if The Art Of Noise produced a Plastic Bertrand record?” To clear up that question Popovich explains, “I spent a good chunk of 1988 listening to the Colors OST and the“Kiss”cassingle by The Art Of Noise and Tom Jones. This older kid Rob on my street who was into punk rock said “the Colors soundtrack is pretty cool but that Art Of Noise song is garbage!” As a nine-year-old, I'd yet to be called out on my questionable musical tastes. Rob made me a mixtape with songs by The Ramones, Misfits, Motorhead, The Buzzcocks and a bunch of other essentials. I'd never heard any punk music before and the impact it had on me was huge. Ffwd to 2022, when Sebastien unilaterally decided to add Fairlight sample horn arrangements to two new American Lips songs, the simultaneous feelings of glorious discovery and deep shame I felt in 1988 came flooding back”. Inspired by Wax Trax! Records, Shep Pettibone, Art Of Noise, and a hot cut from The Ghostbusters OST, American Lips shed the punky garage-wave of their 2017 debut LP “KissThe Void,” and take a hard-drive dumpster-dive, emerging with a kind of “sample-bank pop” -at once danceable, but stylistically hard to pin down (don't call it dance punk!). Double A-sides “Waste Of Crime” and “Labor Of Hate” are backed by extended dub remix“Labor Of Dub.” Fans of mid-80s Cabaret Voltaire, Ghostbusters OST, Decadent Dub Team, Rocket From The Crypt and Plastic Bertrand will rejoice in the exquisite peppering of influences in these new compositions.  WebSite: https://ancientfashionrecords.com/ D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/american_lips Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/americanlipsss Bandcamp: https://americanlips.bandcamp.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/americanlipsband Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5srNG8oK8FdG7qe9jiH7p7?si=mkAMZTuzQnO2CWxt4nrmpQ Brought to you by AIXdspShop now and get up to 50% off on all plugins.Website: HEREPledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca

In this episode of Influenced, we take a look into the careers of the always cool, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC). Formed in the late '90s by musicians Robert Levon Been and Peter Hayes (formerly of the psych rockers the Brian Jonestown Massacre). They wanted to combine a love of the classic heavy hitting blues of bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath with the more forward thinking sounds of artists like My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain. With a number of different drummers and musicians helping the band craft their sound (like Michael Been, Rob's Father and former frontman of the '80s classic band The Call) the band rose to the heights of the 2000s indie rock boom with artists like the Strokes, The Vines, and White Stripes. Unlike many of their peers in that scene, BRMC have continued over the decades influencing other bands that are drawn to the more psychedelic side of things like the Black Angels and Death From Above 1979. BRMC continue to push the envelope for alternative bands into the current decade and have already left an incredible career in their wake. Check out this episode of Influenced to go deeper on one of the coolest bands in the business. Follow Us Here: https://www.instagram.com/influenced.podcast/

Our guest this week is Toronto-based Juno-winning vocalist, songwriter, director, music marketing specialist and Syrian-Canadian - SALLY SHAAR! Sally studied with Canadian vocal legends Christine Duncan, Lorraine Lawson, Falconer Abraham, and Micah Barnes.  She has such an amazing voice and she's constantly pushing the boundaries of her voice both on stage and in the studio. Through her studies at Humber College's music program and an unfortunate bout of tonsillitis, Sally has become a veritable expert on vocal health and recovery.  Sally is a founding member of the alternative rock band MONOWHALES.  They recently won a 2022 Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year!  Sally has been the creative force behind numerous music videos, photos, and online marketing campaigns for the band.  That's right, Sally's ingenuity and forward-thinking approach to music marketing has helped MONOWHALES establish themselves as one of the most exciting new bands in Canada and the WORLD!  MONOWHALES' 2019 single RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down) broke the record for the highest-charting single by an unsigned Canadian band when it hit number two on the Mediabase Canada Alternative Rock Chart. They released their latest album DAYTONA BLEACH in early 2021 which included RWLYD along with Top 10 singles ALL OR NOTHING and OUT WITH THE OLD.  By the way, OUT WITH THE OLD has over 1 million streams on Spotify! Sally is no stranger to the stage, she has toured extensively with MONOWHALES.  Performances include Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Germany, Canadian Music Week in Toronto, Canada, Festival d'ete in Quebec City, Canada and Yellowknife PRIDE.  MONOWHALES has played in support of artists including K Flay, Our Lady Peace, Death From Above 1979, Marianas Trench, Sloan, I Mother Earth and many more. MONOWHALES were just on a cross-Canada tour with indie-rock band Mother Mother and they have a new album slated for release Fall of 2022. Fun Fact: Three MONOWHALES songs off 2018's CONTROL FREAK were featured in Season 1, Episode 5 of 2020 Netflix series SPINNING OUT, which also included a cameo appearance by the band. Dismantle your ideology, or we'll do it for you. Riffs, riffs, and more riffs. Anti-fascist protest punk duo that gets straight to the point. "KILL, THE ICON!" is an exploration of cultural icons and iconoclasts, viewed through the lens of pop culture. "Buddhist Monk" is an exploration of the self-immolation of Thich Quang Duc. Modern protests are often performative and derived for the aim of social clout. This song aims to tell the story of a protestor who put it all on the line. "Bourdain" rolls out the mission statement for KILL, THE ICON! - a short, sharp burst of drums and riffs. Tasting notes: Death From Above 1979, Protomartyr, Royal Blood, Soundtrack to the movie 'TRON'.

Hey hey, we're covering The Monkees! As you'll discover, this was an LP that Rick borrowed from his cousin 20 odd years ago and he hasn't quite managed to return it yet - eek! Rick's now expecting a message from cousin Dave requesting its return, but secretly hoping that he no longer owns a record player so he'll be given the nod to keep it! Kate was researching this one and being a 'Best of...' there wasn't a lot on this particular version of the album itself. The episode is therefore more of a focus on The Monkees and the story of their crazy formation in two seperate guises - firstly the actors who played the struggling band in the TV show, and secondly becoming an actual band in their own right. They sold a hell of a lot of records, often referenced The Beatles and reportedly outsold the Fab Four in america in 1967. They had some fantastic singles too, including Last Train To Clarkesville, I'm a believer, Plesant Valley Sunday, and Daydream Believer. As we've covered 1981 before (Soft Cell's 'Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret), Kate left the usual film, TV and chart analysis this time round and focused on a few 1981 news stories which turned in to a mini chat about tennis and in particular John McEnroe. On the continued countdown of Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 500 songs of all time, we cover numbers 35-31 featuring Rock 'n' Roll royalty in Little Richard and Chuck Berry, The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, The Notorious BIG, and one of the greatest live acts of all time - The Rolling Stones. Kate is somewhat sceptical about Mick Jagger's explanation of what their top-50 rated song is all about! Rick's single of the week is from 2006 (although it didn't chart in the UK until 2007) by Brazilian 'nu-rave' band CSS - 'Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above' reached #39 in the UK singles chart in May 2007. Watch the video of the single here: https://youtu.be/7agPOt1XZz8 Kate's single of the week is a little further back in time. Kate's version of The Wombling Song is from 1974 and she thinks is the first 7" she ever bought. A fine start to her vinyl collection! Steve and Remfry start proceedings this week by going into a very strange tangent inspired by the Sky Arts documentary Allen V Farrow (sorry about that). In the news, Vinyl sales look set to eclipse CD sales in the UK since 1987 and Roger 'Man of the People' Daltrey is releasing his own branded Champagne.  New releases reviewed this week include Is 4 Lovers by Death From Above 1979 (25:37) Tonic Immobility by Tomahawk (52:09) OH NO by Xiu Xiu (64:49) the self-titled album by Black Spiders (78:19) and Serj Tankian's Elasticity EP (90:28) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Originally on Patreon (May 5th 2020) Steve and Remfry dissect the 2004 debut album from Canadian rock duo Death From Above 1979. Just catching the tail end of the Garage rock revival, 'You're a Woman, I'm a Machine' was released to very positive reviews, particularly amongst the indie press (5/5 on Alternative Press, 10/10 on Drowned in Sound, **** in Mojo and Uncut). The boys discuss their experiences seeing Death From Above live, their split, their resurgence and comeback almost a decade later.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. On this week's episode, we correct things we got wrong, sit down and look at some different responses to the whole beer name and respect issue, talk about how an early San Francisco craft brewer is coming back and why their move feels similar to Widmer's recent moves and explore the idea of Black Friday Counter Programming the Goose Island Bourbon County Frenzy. We stop by the library to get Drew's recommendations on books for brewers and why Denny doesn't have time to read anymore. In the brewery, Drew talks about a stubborn brewery imperfection that he's got to solve and Lallemand's new dried "New England IPA" yeast. Then we sit down in the lounge with Kevin Osborne of Cellador Ales to talk about running a fermentorium, his giant next door neighbor, how he looks to build sour flavors and hold onto house cultures. And then of course we answer some questions and Denny goes back to basics before Drew leaves you a new podcast exploring old crime. Ultra-tight jeans, thumping four-to-the-floor rhythms, and caterwauling screams didn't just define Christian's teenage years, they also define 2000's Dance Punk, the focus of this episode. Chrisitan and Wyndham will talk about the music that dragged lead-footed punks and rockers back onto the dancefloor after nearly a decade of post-grunge balladry. Christian explains the innovations and influences that shaped the genre and chats with Wyndham about the cultural underpinnings of dance and punk coming together in New York City. The two also jump into details about the bands that led the way, including The Rapture, !!!, LCD Soundsystem, The Faint, Hot Hot Heat, Q and Not U, CSS, Death From Above 1979.
