Vera Chok narrates An Yu's eerie novel full of dreams of talking mushrooms and heartbroken musicians. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss the story of Song Yan, who lives with her husband and mother-in-law in a Beijing apartment. Everyone tells her she should be happy, but she exists in a fog of loneliness. The mystery of the novel begins when a package of unusual mushrooms arrives at her home. Now Song must find out who sent them—which leads to the discovery of the home of a famous musician who went missing many years ago. Chok's performance skillfully evokes the rising gloom and desperation that Song experiences throughout the story. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. This week we are delighted to welcome the fantastic Vera Chok to the show. Vera is currently starring as Honour Chen-Williams in Hollyoaks, but when she isn't filming for the show you will often find her involved in improv in some way, shape or form. During this very varied chat Iain and Vera cover all sorts of topics from culture to comedy, and there's even an unexpected discovery of a mutual love of Australian soap 'Home & Away'! Vera started out as an actor who didn't think much of improv, but find out what happened to change that opinion and how it ended up becoming a true passion. It's time to sit back, relax and find out Vera's true story of making stuff up.

Welcome back! We're so happy to be back and regaling you with all sorts of nonsense as well as a few recommendations! Rhiannon tells us about the fight for uni degrees for women in the play ‘Blue Stockings' in a tangential discussion of her recent move. Alex divulges her obsession with the charming and sentimental ‘Anne with an ‘E'' after Rhiannon entertains us with Dawn French's warming novel ‘Because of You'. We touch on the Women's Prize and firmly assert that trans women are women in the wake of a recent and abhorrent open letter. We both talk about some of the cozy fiction we've been enjoying and we discuss the shame that can sometimes creep up when talking about comfort reads. Alex has been reaffirming her love for Dolly Alderton and ‘Sex in the City' in a new podcast whilst Rhiannon has been immersed in the true crime drama, ‘The Serpent'. As is, by now, firmly traditional, the first episode of the new season of the podcast finds Charles Adrian chatting to Vera Chok, who is neither fancy nor a storyteller. They talk relatable self-help, a book to make you cry and an early Renaissance guide to health. Clarification 1: The audio version of Brené Brown’s Rising Strong that Vera mentions having listened to is, in fact, a recording of a talk given by Brené Brown called Rising Strong As A Spiritual Practice. There is also an audio version of the book, Rising Strong, read by Brené Brown. Clarification 2: “The Tacuinum Sanitatis is a richly illustrated guide to health. Made in Padua in the 1450s, it contains 130 miniatures illustrating substances and activities conducive to health and happiness, ranging from food and drink to singing, sleep and sex. Its scribe and artists enjoyed the patronage of a circle of humanists who flourished in the Veneto in the 1450s and 1460s, including the Venetian governer of Padua, Jacopo Antionio Marcello, and his great friend King René of Anjou. A window into the everyday lives of affluent Italians in the fifteenth century, the Tacuinum Sanitatis brings to life the fascinating domestic arena of the early Renaissance.” (From the back cover of Tacuinum Sanitatis: An Early Renaissance Guide to Health by Alixe Bovey.) Episode image is a detail from the cover of Tacuinum Sanitatis: An Early Renaissance Guide To Health by Alixe Bovey, published to accompany an exhibition of miniatures from the Liechtenstein Tacuinum Sanitatis at Sam Fogg, 15d Clifford Street, London, 1-29th July, 2005. podcast homepage: http://www.pageonepodcast.com/   Book list: Rising Strong by Brené Brown A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara Tacuinum Sanitatis: An Early Renaissance Guide to Health by Alixe Bovey
