Understanding the Iberian Peninsula BlackoutPub date: 2025-05-12Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarization More than 52 years after EPRI was born as a result of a massive North American blackout, EPRI Current host Samantha Gilman speaks with Eamonn Lannoye, Director, EPRI Europe and Sean McGuiness Senior Technical Executive, EPRI Europe, to discuss the recent power blackout in Spain, Portugal and parts of France. The whole system went down in five seconds. What do we know about why it happened? What do we not yet know, and why can it take time to fully understand the root causes? Are observers jumping to conclusions before all the data is in? Lannoye has been a frequent contributor to international media stories about the event. He and McGuiness share their expertise on the series of events and caution about drawing conclusions too quickly. The Attenuating Puritan by Robert McGuiness Amazon.com Robertmcguinessbooks.com Embark on a contemplative journey with our altruistic hero, a reflection of purity in words and deeds, yet occasionally marked by ancestral toxins. With unwavering conviction, he dances under the world's weight, marching into the unknown, his steps marked by hope and staunch faith. Bound by a noble quest to restore the splendor of Eden, his every gesture is a sacrifice, a stride towards the pristine and divine. Amidst adversities, he stands a fortified pilgrim, mastering the shackles of mind and body, emerging as a triumphant victor, a mirror to us all daring to confront our reflections. He is the champion of tainted sacraments, a crusader against the clutches of heavy metal and forever chemicals, hinting that our destinies might be cradled in such hands. As we tread the path of love eternal, each step taken is righteous, a gentle move towards the boundless cosmos that binds us in love. In The Attenuating Puritan, every breath taken is a whisper of attenuation, every quenched thirst a sigh of grace, and every bounty received a step closer to the celestial, encapsulating a tale of hope, resilience, and the ceaseless quest for the divine amidst the terrestrial. Personal Life Robert McGuiness was born on February 8, 1954 in Bayshore, New York. He was the second oldest of five born to Margaret Jean Reidy McGuiness and Robert Eugene McGuiness. He attended school in Smithtown, New York and graduated from Smithtown High School in 1972. Satisfying a natural wonderlust he ended up in Arizona and after working through a winter backpacked in Arizona and then through the Sierra Nevada logging over a thousand mountainous miles. At the end of 1976 he returned to the west coast and has made Northern California home ever since. Living remotely and off the grid, he gained great satisfaction in being a part of “The Back To The Land” movement. He has two children, Jewel and Bob. Unfortunately their mother, Sandra was killed in an accident with a log truck in 1987. Bob was in the vehicle and before he was 21 months old was severely injured. Comatose with blood in the ventricles he was flown to San Francisco. He was hospitalized for several months and before he could sit we returned to the north coast. We moved into town and started a rigorous routine of therapy and rehabilitation. He developed seizures and had surgeries and braces throughout his formative years. Richard, his brother lived with them during those difficult times and was a tireless advocate for Bob. He developed lung cancer and remained in character until his passing in 2007. Thirty seven years later Bob still lives at home, with Marbles and his Dad, and though there are physical residuals he manages quite well. Jewel has blessed us with three grandchildren, and she and her family continue to make the north coast home.

It was announced that Raw will be going to back to two hours until they move to Netflix. Is this the right move and should they stay two hours after January? PWI released their annual top 500, did they get it right with their top ten this year? With the rumors of the Hurt Business becoming Elite, can they be a big deal or will they get lost in the shuffle of that already loaded roster? Jey Uso became the number one contender for the IC title, will he finally get his hands on a singles championship? Did the Bloodline actually look better without Solo? With Darby not getting his title shot at Grand Slam, does it make sense for Danielson to face off against Nigel McGuiness?
Part One Jim DiEugenio Jim's Website Kennedys and King Maureen Callahan Goes over the Edge - Along with Megyn Kelly Read Part Three Jim wraps up his three part review of Maureen Callaghan's fictitious book, Ask Not. Read a detailed & shortened version of the reviews on Jim's Stubstack. Before publishing Ask Not, why didn't Callaghan or Kelly invest in a professional fact checker? Why wouldn't Megyn Kelly try to verify Callaghan's claims BEFORE Callaghan's interview? Callaghan relies on disinfo books written on the Chappaquiddick event by Paul Burke & Leo Damore. Unfortunately, Ted Kennedy's first wife, Joan, was unable to curb her alcoholism. Jim disputes Callaghan's claim that Ted Kennedy killed Mary Jo Kopechne. Ted Kennedy had never been to Chappaquiddick before July 18, 1969. Ted Kennedy rarely drove anywhere by himself, he was usually driven by a driver. Jim feels the accident was due to Ted Kennedy not knowing the Chappaquiddick roads or Dyke Bridge. On August 23, 1956 Jackie Kennedy gave birth to a premature baby girl, Arabella, who was stillborn. Although Arabella wasn't due for five weeks, Callaghan implies JFK was negligent by being absent. Diana de Vegh first wrote about her "affair" with JFK when he was a Senator, 60 years after the fact. Rosemary, daughter of Joseph & Mary Kennedy, born with mental health issues. In desperation, Joseph Kennedy gave approval to doctors to perform a frontal lobotomy on Rosemary. Jackie Kennedy was absent from the birthday fundraiser for JFK at Madison Gardens in NYC. Jackie wasn't fond of going to fundraising events, where she felt "for sale", asking people for money. Marilyn Monroe was just one of seventeen different entertainers at JFK's birthday fundraiser in 1962. Marilyn Monroe was married & divorced three times by age 35. Where is Callaghan's evidence that Marilyn was having an affair with JFK or RFK? How could JFK or RFK be responsible for Marilyn Monroe's death if they weren't with Marilyn? Jackie went to Europe with her sister, after the death of baby Patrick who died at just two days old. Jackie returned in time for JFK's trip to Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963. Dropped Calls by Robert McGuinessDropped Calls will ring like a lost phone and have you scrambling to pick up the call. Should water, food, and even the air we breathe become threatened? Providence assembles at the bugler's call. When democracy is under threat from our collective complacency, these words shall find meaning in the screaming echoes of two centuries past “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty”. In this work of fiction, the resonance of truth should challenge the reader's sagacity so that each person becomes the keystone to the solution. Just like Siddhartha, to read it once is a revelation, and immersed deep in its pages, understanding and enlightenment may develop. Robert McGuiness was born in Bayshore New York. Kristen McGuiness is a successful author of books such as her memoir 51/50: The Magical Adventures of the Single Life and her debut novel, Live Through This. She has also founded her own publishing company called Rise Books where her mission is to publish what she describes as “radical works of inspiration.” Kristen is also the daughter of Dan McGuiness – one of the largest and most consequential marijuana smugglers of the 1970s and 1980s. She describes him as “one of the architects of the modern drug trade.” His story and their relationship she detailed in an article for Rolling Stone Magazine called, Learjets, Mistresses, and Bales of Weed: My Dad's Life as Drug Kingpin. While TV and films often glamourize this existence, Kristen's life was one of missing a father who existed for her solely in weekend phone calls from the prisons that tried to keep him under lock and key for decades – Dan escaped three times – and the letters he would send home. Her relationship to his story and to his business and how it impacted her life is complex. There are no heroic apologies from Dan to Kristen. He expresses no real remorse for the lives that might have been negatively impacted by his drug smuggling. Kristen herself at times speaks poignantly about how much her dad had her deep love and devotion, and the other times, she labels him a sociopath. There exists a hard truth that comes through in our conversation and in her writings of what it was like to love her dad so much, even as he loved equally, if not more, the rush he got from being addicted to crime - "the juice" as she describes it. Her views of her life and who Dan McGuniess was are both heartbreaking and provocative; there is not the neat and easy good guy/bad guy trope that we usually expect from this type of story. Mostly, we find ourselves at the tip of the needle, dancing on a point that pricks our feet while we stay as upright as we can, clinging to dear life. It explores themes of trauma, love, marriage, motherhood, and female friendship, aiming to emotionally galvanize readers against gun violence in America. Storytelling is a Trojan horse, with our activism inside. It's a much gentler approach to guide someone to a wider lens of understanding, compassion and empathy. ~ Kristen McGuiness Have you ever felt “changed” by a book? Those who love to read–and write–know what it's like to become lost in a story, feeling along with characters and experiencing their trials and triumphs along with them. Kristen McGuiness, founder of Rise Publishing and author of Live Through This, believes in the power of storytelling as a tool to create understanding and change while building alliances for the greater good. An activist against injustice from a young age after losing her father to a long prison sentence, Kristen believes in storytelling as a way to share experiences and encourage others to see a different point of view. Here at Brilliantly Resilient, we believe that broadening perceptions to include those of others is part of building resilience. When we are willing to look through a different lens, we learn and grow, as well as create alliances with others. Tune into this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast to hear more of Kristen's wisdom and pick up your copy of Live Through This. Be sure to listen for these additional bits of brilliance: Books aren't banned because people are ‘afraid of turning gay,' for example. They're banned because we recognize that story connects us and the fear is that a perspective will be changed and you'll become an ally of something others don't like or endorse. If we have the desire to write, we are often writing from a place of pain or hardship, and of someone who has had to overcome that. That is always a story of justice to me and of justice being served in some way. The systems in which we live, like a five day work week with only two days off, can keep us from feeling we have the time to be socially active. We need to make a choice to build more justice in this world. We can make change. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, Mary Fran & Kristin

Tara Dawson McGuinness, founder of the New Practice Lab at the New America Foundation and co-author of the newly re-released book, Power to the Public: The Promise of Public Interest Technology, joined Paul Taylor, Noelle Knell and new permanent co-host Ashley Silver for a discussion of the state of our digital union. The discussion centers on the evolution of digital government, not merely as a technological shift but as a nuanced change in systems and problem-solving methodologies that prioritize citizens. Show Notes The episode provides eight essential takeaways: Tara Dawson McGuiness discusses the future of digital government, emphasizing it should be citizen-centered, rather than purely technological. McGuiness has experience in the Obama White House and founded the New Practice Lab to foster cross-sector collaborations. The pandemic highlighted the importance of implementation in government services, such as the vaccine rollout, making citizen experience a key focus. McGuiness identifies a "renaissance" in local and state governments enabled by federal funding but notes challenges such as underinvestment and workforce retention. Local governments are often more in touch with human-centered design due to their closeness to the communities they serve. Technology alone is not a solution for complex social problems; it should be part of a broader, problem-solving approach. Visibility is critical; a working policy or system is irrelevant if it's not easily accessible and experienced by citizens. McGuiness's New Practice Lab provides "sprint teams" to government bodies to help them rapidly implement solutions, with the aim to inform and improve future policies. I'm also gonna share with you a live concert from the Maggie McGuinness Pub. The most-Irish of Irish pubs that are NOT in Ireland. The first band was Kinnfolk. I tried 2 or 3 different show names. I bounced the format around. I did an interview. I shared tips for visiting County Mayo, Ireland. I linked the podcast more tightly to my newsletter. I even shared a Countdown of Celtic music favorites from 2022. It felt to me like I didn't have a direction. And to a large degree, I didn't. As always, I love having this podcast and opportunity to talk about what's new and promote what's coming up. I love sharing stories about sustainability and how to protect our planet. I love sharing stories from my travels. I enjoyed interviewing people. I also know that I don't have a ton of time for this podcast, especially because I have the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. That's my main show. It's the one I promote. It's tough promoting multiple shows. But this podcast serves a very special audience, you, the Gunn Runners who enjoy my music. So the show will continue in a very similar fashion… without the constant show name changes. Whether Pub Songs & Stories is a misnomer or a reflection of my love and appreciation of public house music… folk music for people, it's gonna continue in a similar fashion. I have a list of about 40 things I'd love to talk about. They include shows about sustainability and climate change, stories from my recent trip to Ireland, making better choices for your community, staying healthy with exercise, looking to the future to make things better, and of course, I'll share the stories behind each of the songs I write or have written. Plus, I still want to highlight my fellow musicians, Celtic or otherwise. Because that's just what I do. So we're gonna do that right now with a funny track from the band Fire in the Glen. Rod hosted show #611 of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast and shared a story for Star of the County Down in this podcast. 10:52 - Fire in the Glen “From Amish to Irish” from Cutting Backen 14:23 - JOIN THE GUNN RUNNERS CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. He is also the author of a new book, Building Great Leadership Teams: A Practical Approach for Unleashing the Full Potential of Your Team. We talk about the benefits of having a great leadership team, how to build trust inside a team, and why leadership is not about having all the answers. --- Build a Great Leadership Team with Jack McGuiness Our guest is Jack McGuiness the founder of Relationship Impact co-founder of Relationship Impact a consulting firm focused on helping great leaders build great leadership teams. He is the author of a new book, Building Great Leadership Teams. Sounds very similar, which was recently released on Amazon. So, Jack, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me, I appreciate it. No, it's great to have you, and I'm very curious about this book and all the things that you're gonna share with our audience. So let's start with your journey. How did you become a leadership team coach? And what was the road that led you here? You told me about management consulting, your entrepreneurial venture. So, give us an overview of your journey, please. So as I'm sure with a lot of your guests, it wasn't a straight line, and it wasn't necessarily intentional, but it's kind of worked out for the better or the good, I think. So I'm a, I graduated in West Point. So I had an immediate experience being a leader, 22 years old of a bunch of infantry troops with the 10th Mountain Division, which was an amazing experience. Learned just a tremendous amount about myself. Some things I like, some things I didn't like so much. And, and learned from some, some non-commissioned officers that were just really top-notch leaders. And I learned how to be a good platoon leader. And there's a lot of lessons I've learned from that that have been foundational in my career, no matter whatever turns it took. As far as my entrepreneurial adventure, I got fortunate right out of business school. I went to business school right after I got out of the army and looking for a job, as we all did. And I got very lucky. It was a guy that was consulting to my brother at Verizon. He was a senior executive at Verizon and had worked with him for years. And he was a partner at Deloitte, started his own consulting firm. And I became one of his first employees and had the fortunate experience of doing two things, learning how to be a management consultant as an engineer with an MBA and some leadership experience as a platoon leader. But I learned the ins and outs of being a good management consultant as well at an early age from a guy that was a great mentor and a great consultant himself. But I also learned how to build a firm with him and some others from nothing. And that was a very cool experience too. We built a very cool management consulting firm that competed with the likes of Deloitte and McKinsey sometimes and others that we often lost to but we had our share of wins too. And so I learned how to build the infrastructure of a consulting firm, learned how to manage the financials of a professional service business, which was a challenging endeavor of the fits and starts of growing any firm. And so that experience at a early age, I think I was probably 26 or 27 when I got there and it was just, has been foundational for me, for sure. What about your next business? I wound up becoming the chief operating officer at this consulting firm, which as a side note, sold to Accenture a few years ago. I missed out on all that, unfortunately. But I had an itch, sort of an itch to own my own thing and take the principles that I had learned in helping other businesses and build my own. So I, with a couple of passive investors, I bought a contract packaging firm that provided packaging services, mostly club store kind of services for big consumer product companies like Unilev...
On this week's PreserveCast, we'll head back to the 19th century to explore the landscapes and sites associated with Frederick Douglass and talk with Jeffrey McGuiness about his photographic journey to document these sites for his new book published by The St. Michael's Museum, Bear Me Into Freedom: The Talbot County of Frederick Douglass. Jeff McGuiness is a photographer and writer fascinated by history, politics, art, and photography. He lives in St. Michaels on Maryland's Eastern Shore. For the past five years, he has worked on a photographic essay of the place where Frederick Douglass was born and lived for eleven years enslaved—Talbot County, Maryland. His photobook, published in November of 2022 by the St. Michaels Museum Press, is entitled Bear Me Into Freedom: The Talbot County of Frederick Douglass. McGuiness was born in California and grew up in suburban Washington, D.C. After graduating from college with an art degree in 1969, he spent the next four years in the U.S. Air Force as a photographer during the Vietnam conflict. He then worked for a commercial photographer in St. Louis for a time before deciding to pursue a law degree. McGuiness was a practicing attorney in Washington, DC, for more than four decades, concentrating on public policy and managing non-profit organizations. These days, McGuiness does what he enjoys most. An avid boater, he explores his beloved Chesapeake Bay in his powerboat while using his varied experiences to pursue photography and writing projects through his company, Bay Photographic Works.
