The New Yorker staff writer Ava Kofman joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss her recent Profile of the iconoclastic right-wing blogger Curtis Yarvin. They discuss Yarvin's desire to end American democracy by installing a monarch, whether his provocations can be seen as trolling, and how his writings have found a receptive audience among conservative politicians and the tech élite. “Obviously, Yarvin's influence on the right is great, and maybe can't be overstated,” Kofman says. “But, at the same time, a lot of these ideas he's getting from having conversations with powerful people in Silicon Valley and with powerful people in Washington.”This week's reading: “Curtis Yarvin's Plot Against America,” by Ava Kofman “Democracy Wins a Referendum in South Korea,” by E. NB: Allerførst kommer lige et link til den eksklusive T-shirt fra Lykkeberg & Corydons spontant opståede, men dybfølte bevægelse 'Folkebevægelsen Mod Monokausale Forklaringsmodeller'.
We're starting 2025 way down in the hole, with a look back on one of the undisputed great TV series of our time. Our guest today is a storyteller responsible for shows like Treme, Generation Kill, The Deuce, The Plot Against America and We Own This City, but best known of course for The Wire – a show that began at a crime scene, with blood splattered across granite, police lights painting the pavement red, white and blue. It was here that audiences first met Detective McNulty, played by Dominic West, chatting with a murder witness. A kid had been killed for trying to rob a dice game – a stunt he tried to pull often. Usually, the kid in question, named Snot Boogie, got away with just a beating. This time, not so lucky. “I gotta ask you,” McNulty asks the witness. “If Snot always stole the money, why'd you always let him play?” The witness sighs, and the camera cuts to Snot's motionless body, gazing towards us from the floor. “Got to,” replies the witness. “This is America.”That line was the first clue that The Wire wasn't going to be like other television series. David wanted this police procedural, informed by his own experiences reporting on crime in the area as a journalist for the Baltimore Sun, to be more than another show about cops and criminals; it was to offer a microcosm of America itself. The Wire won no awards. Just 70,000 people tuned into the show's final episode, capping five critically and commercially overlooked seasons in 2008. Its creator didn't watch TV – David, in fact, pretty much hated the medium. And yet, The Wire has become recognised as one of the most important pieces of American pop culture of the millennium so far: a novelistic cross section of the Land of the Free, that bloomed from a tale about a phone-tapping team of lawmakers into an interrogation of media, education and everything in between. The spoiler conversation you're about to hear is a window into everything that is possible in the medium of television – and everything that's perhaps wrong with it right now, too. David was really candid about his struggles to get new work off the ground and onto screens in 2025 despite the enormous influence of The Wire. You'll hear how McNulty came to be, the real-life inspirations behind the show's most iconic character Omar, how far western society has come in addressing the systemic problems exposed in The Wire (spoiler alert: not very) and much, much more. And you'll also discover the lost season of The Wire that David devised, but that never made it to air.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. PUTIN'S PLOT AGAINST AMERICA by The Charles T. McDowell Center for Global Studies and Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center
Diezelfde Bill Clinton in 1996. Today's great political film is Frank Capra's Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1939), a much-loved tale of the little guy taking on the corrupt establishment. But there's far more to it than that, including an origin story that suggests Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) might not be what he seems. From filibusters to fascism, from the New Deal to America First, from Burton K. Wheeler to Harry S. Truman, this is a heart-warming film that still manages to go to the dark heart of American politics. To hear our bonus episode on Philip Roth's The Plot Against America (in which Burton K. Something different for our last episode on the Great Political Fictions as this time David talks to the person who wrote it: Tim Rice, the lyricist of the epic musical about the life of Eva Peron, Evita (co-written with Andrew Lloyd-Webber). David talks to the writer and broadcaster Helen Lewis about Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird (1960), one of the most widely read and best-loved novels of the twentieth century, and in the twenty-first century increasingly one of the most controversial. Is the book an attack on or an apology for Southern racism? How does its view of race relate to the picture it paints of class and caste in 1930s Alabama? Have you ever wondered what our world would look like if significant historical events had taken a different turn? That's the fascinating premise we explore on this episode of Dispatch Ajax, starting with Nathaniel Hawthorne's whimsical "P's Correspondence" and moving on to Castillo Holford's visionary "Aristopia." Imagine a North America founded on gold or a timeline where historical figures live on to shape the world in unforeseen ways. We also delve into Sir John Squire's anthology "If it had Happened Otherwise," with speculative essays from luminaries like Winston Churchill, inviting you to ruminate on the absurdities and profound possibilities of alternate histories.Harry Turtledove fans, rejoice! We dedicate a segment to his intricate series, from "American Empire" to "Settling Accounts," where the CSA's trajectory parallels post-WWI Germany. What would have happened if the CSA had bought Cuba or if a socialist uprising had transformed South Carolina? We also highlight other pivotal works, like "The Years of Rice and Salt," where Europe's depopulation by the Black Death leads to an entirely different global power structure. From the CSA's nationalist movements to a reimagined Second Mexican War, Turtledove's alternate timelines provide a rich tapestry of what-ifs.To round things off, we journey through other imaginative narratives such as "The Two Georges" and "The Plot Against America," examining worlds where the American Revolution never occurred or Lindbergh defeated FDR. We explore provocative scenarios where Homo sapiens never reached the Americas in Turtledove's "A Different Flesh," and the steampunk marvels of "The Difference Engine." Whether it's atomic punk, diesel punk, or the bizarre yet intriguing idea of populating the Mississippi with hippos in "American Hippo," this episode promises a thought-provoking and entertaining exploration of alternate histories and their creative potential. Tune in, and let's reimagine history together!
Air Date 7/20/2024 Extremism comes in many forms and we live in an era in which way too many of them are on display simultaneously, but it's not coincidence. The far right has been working toward an extremist Supreme Court for decades. Christian Nationalists have similarly been trying to impose their rigid view of far-right Christianity on the rest of us for a very long time. The far-right Heritage Foundation now deems this to be the time to attempt to radicalize the federal bureaucracy, and far-right calls for political violence and lax gun laws resulted in an environment where no one was really all that surprised about the assassination attempt against Donald Trump. Join Chris and Susan for an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at “Homicide: Life on the Street,” with journalist, author, writer, and producer David Simon. David delves candidly into how his award-winning 1991 book, “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets,” was translated to the screen, how he learned to write for teleplays, and how the real crimes and detectives from the book became the engaging stories and characters portrayed in the award-winning television series. David Simon is a Baltimore-based journalist, author, and television producer. He created and produced the celebrated HBO series The Wire, which depicts an American city's political and socioeconomic fissures. A former reporter for the Baltimore Sun, Simon is the author of two books of narrative non-fiction. His first book, Homicide, was the basis for the NBC drama of that name, and his second, The Corner, became an Emmy-winning HBO miniseries. Subsequent television credits include Generation Kill, Treme, Show Me A Hero, The Deuce, and The Plot Against America. His most recent project, We Own This City, is a six-hour, limited series chronicling the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force. It examines the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work. As Americans are being warned today about the rise of American Nazis and the attack on our Democracy, it's worth noting that this has happened before. Nazis marched down American main streets in the 1930s while flying swastikas and Old Glory and chanted "America First." PBS American Experience looks at the roots of American anti-Semitism and authoritarianism that we continue to wrestle with today.
Jesse Starcher and Mark Radulich present their The Plot Against America Miniseries 2020 Review! The Plot Against America is an American alternate history drama television miniseries created and written by David Simon and Ed Burns, based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Philip Roth, that aired on HBO from March 16, 2020, to April 20, 2020.The Plot Against America imagines an alternate American history told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey, as they watch the political rise of Charles Lindbergh, an aviator-hero and xenophobic populist, who becomes president and turns the nation toward fascism.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich
Are Christian politicians plotting to turn America into a theocracy? That's precisely what the woke media outlets want you to think, often accusing Christians of trying to violate the “separation of church and state". They also accuse Christians of trying to legislate morality. But if Christians and conservatives don't have the "right" to legislate morality, who does? House Speaker, Mike Johnson, was recently accused of being a theocrat in an article published by The Guardian titled 'Mike Johnson, Theocrat: The House Speaker and a Plot Against America.' In this week's podcast episode, Frank reviews the scathing article that was written by attorney Marci A. Hamilton who analyzes an old clip from Representative Mike Johnson. Frank will also address questions like: What is the true definition of a theocracy? Should principles found in the Bible be eradicated from all public policy? What objective source do Leftists and atheists have for public policy? Is the "separation of church and state" in the constitution and is it even an issue? Is there a difference between legislating religion and legislating morality? Were the founding fathers anti-religious? Does the Bible advise Christians to establish a theocracy? Listen as Frank addresses some of the erroneous charges made against Mike Johnson and unpacks some of the political, moral, and apologetic implications of Hamilton's accusations. Who exactly is the moral authority for non-Christians and those on the far left? All this and more will be discussed in this thought-provoking episode! Michael Goldfarb looks at five authors and their books on the receiving end of cancel culture in liberal America of the 1960s. Each author and the work being discussed was the subject of a controversy that altered their lives and deeply affected their careers. In this essay, he focuses on Philip Roth. Roth became permanently alienated from American Jews and even his own mother asked him if he was anti-Semitic. In light of his continuous production and the miraculous late flowering of his art, from The Counterlife to The Plot Against America, it's easy to forget that Portnoy's Complaint, despite its sales, nearly destroyed his career within his own community. It also coloured how he was seen until his death: as a misogynist who, depending on one's view, had to be forgiven because of his talent, or could not be forgiven, because of his talent. The irony is that while many Jews at the time would like to have had Portnoy's Complaint pulled from bookshops and libraries and pulped, his authorised biography, published in 2021, actually was pulled from sale and pulped because the author, Blake Bailey, was accused of sexual assault.

And oh, yeah, he's the editor of Fire Island. We talked to him about how great the movie is and also asked some really dumb questions, as is our wont. He was great. We're really proud of this one — hope you enjoy! Next, we return to BBC/A&E/Nemesis, a.k.a. the miniseries with the pond in it. Lots of love, A+J+A

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore the influence of David Simon and The Wire, as the Baltimore-set opus celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Beginning his career as a police reporter for the much respected Baltimore Sun, David Simon eventually became disillusioned with changes being made at the paper and spent a year embedded with the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit. That resulted in the book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, which became the basis for the TV show Homicide: Life On The Street. Simon followed that with another book, The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood, which was adapted for TV as The Corner, and then created The Wire, which changed television forever. Simon has since been behind the shows Generation Kill, Treme, The Deuce and The Plot Against America. His latest project We Own This City sees him return to Baltimore, this time to tell the true story of the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption surrounding it. Ellen looks at the influence of David Simon's work with a focus on unconventional casting - Simon repeatedly casts non-actors, and people with first hand experience of the subjects he explores. She speaks with casting director Pat Moran, who has worked alongside Simon on several projects. She also talks to Ronan Bennett and Gerry Jackson. Ronan is the creator and writer of Top Boy and Gerry is the series' story consultant. Gerry is a fitness trainer but his knowledge of Hackney and connection to the local community helped Ronan to write Top Boy, and to find local talent to feature in the show, in an echo of The Wire. And Mark goes back 20 years to speak to someone who was there when The Wire began. Actor Clarke Peters was on the show for all five seasons, playing fan favourite Detective Lester Freamon and delivering some of the show's greatest lines. Mark also talks to Professor Liam Kennedy, editor of The Wire: Race, Class, and Genre - a series of essays exploring the show's portrayals of race, drug war policing, deindustrialisation, and the inadequacies of America's civic, educational, and political institutions. Also, Top Boy star Ashley Walters shares what he's been watching. Screenshot is Radio 4's guide through the ever-expanding universe of the moving image. Every episode, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode journey through the main streets and back roads connecting film, television and streaming over the last hundred years. Last week, John Durham, the special counsel currently investigating the alleged spying that was done against Donald Trump's campaign in 2016, submitted a new court filing that revealed the fact that the inspector general of the Department of Justice has been concealing crucial information from his investigation—specifically, information that's connected to a Clinton campaign lawyer, as well as to the former general counsel of the FBI. Meanwhile, while I was down in Texas, I had the opportunity to speak with John and Amanda Milius, who are together the producer and director of a film called “The Plot Against America,” and we discussed what it's like to bring the uncomfortable truth to light, as well as what it means for this country that you can use the facts to win in a court of public opinion, but not in a court of law. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch
George Soros recently shifted $125 million to his super PAC in order to help Democrats win as many congressional races as possible in November, and beyond. Meanwhile, the Biden administration recently announced an initiative to give away 1 billion COVID at-home test kits to American households for free. This sounds great, but many Americans throughout the country were rather surprised when they opened their mailbox, checked their government-issued COVID test, and learned that it was actually made in China.
