In this probing episode of the #SiblingsToo podcast, host Nancy Morris explores the challenges of representing sibling sexual abuse (SSA) in television programs, joined by experts and survivors Brinn Langdale, Diane Tarantini, and Tanith McCulloch. Against the backdrop of media representations like HBO's White Lotus and the UK's Hollyoaks, they navigate the multifaceted conversations surrounding SSA and highlight the urgency for responsible and informed storytelling. The episode critiques the portrayal of sibling sexual behavior in popular media, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, sensitivity, and comprehensive research in storytelling. Drawing on experiences with Hollyoaks and its reflective storytelling approach, the guests discuss how programs can shed light on the realities of SSA without resorting to sensationalism. Central themes include the societal need to recognize the prevalence of sibling sexual abuse and the vital role of resources and compassionate narratives in media. Engaging in this sensitive dialogue, they call for narratives that not only entertain but educate and provide pathways to healing and understanding for audiences worldwide.   Guest bios: Brinn Langdale is a sibling sexual abuse survivor, a licensed therapist, writer, speaker, and host of the Wholistic Approach to Healing podcast. She's also the founder of Wholistic Approach, a transformational coaching program focused on healing the whole you. www.brinnlangdale.com   Diane Tarantini is a sibling sexual abuse survivor based in Morgantown, West Virginia. She is an accomplished author, having written a children's book "The Brave Knight" and a memoir "Everyone Was Silent". Diane also works as a body safety educator, delivering crucial educational programs to public schools. https://dianetarantini.com   Tanith McCulloch served as the Sibling Sexual Abuse Project Officer for SARSAS in the UK. In addition to her role as a counselor and supervisor, Tanith actively contributed to the sensitive portrayal of sibling sexual abuse in the British TV show Hollyoaks, assisting in script authenticity and accuracy.   Key Takeaways:   Prevalence and Awareness: Sibling sexual abuse is a significant issue impacting numerous individuals, yet it remains underrepresented in popular media narratives. Consent and Responsibility: Media portrayals often fail to adequately address the complexities of consent, particularly in instances involving drugs or alcohol, portraying behaviors as consensual rather than abusive. Social Media and Survivor Communities: The episode discusses how social media serves as both a platform for survivor voices and a space for misinformation, emphasizing the need for informed conversation. Healing and Resources: Highlighting the fight for accurate storytelling, the discussion addresses the importance of providing resources and support for survivors within media representations. Future of SSA in Media: Diane, Tanith, and Brinn delved into their visions for future media portrayals which should influence public perceptions and lead to greater societal change.   Notable Quotes: "In the survivor groups that I'm a part of... to have a loss of connection to your family is a huge part of sibling sexual abuse that I don't think is being talked about." - Brinn Langdale "We have to come away from that narrative that it is a fantasy...and branch it out so people are being seen and represented." - Tanith McCulloch "In a perfect world, I would love to see the survivor disclose and have a positive experience with that, like they're believed, they're supported." - Diane Tarantini "Bring all the storylines and then let's get together on these kinds of calls with lived experience people ... to really start to pull this apart." – Nancy Morris     Resources: SARSAS RAINN White Lotus Hollyoaks     Chapters   0:00 Sibling Sexual Abuse Representation in Media and Its Impact 4:49 Controversial White Lotus Scene Sparks Social Media Debate 8:07 Addressing Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Complex Impacts 12:49 Understanding Consent and Its Complexities in Media Narratives 15:15 Sibling Sexual Abuse Representation in Media and Its Challenges 23:58 Anticipation and Uncertainty in White Lotus' Final Episode 27:33 Understanding Sibling Sexual Trauma and Individual Reactions 31:23 Complex Storylines in Media and Their Impact on Audiences 33:19 The Debate Over Trigger Warnings and Their Impact 41:21 Diverse Media Representation of Complex SSA and SSB Experiences 44:58 Sibling Sexual Abuse and Family Dynamics in Media 49:21 Media's Role in Addressing Sibling Sexual Abuse Narratives

Today, Danny is joined by Lizzy Roper, a comedian, actress, DJ, the face of Aunt Bessie´s and more. Her grandfather was a Londoner, but her father was born in Spain. When the civil war erupted, they became refugees. Lizzy was born and raised in Whetstone. Lizzy´s career has included numerous stage roles and parts in 63 movies and TV shows, including Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road. As well as a significant period doing stand up alongside Lenny Beige, Matt Lucas, Sasha Barron Cohen, David Walliams and more. She shares some interesting stories, including why she had to learn Middle English to get her equity card, a funny Pink Panther story and tales of an eclectic mix of celebrities, including Tom Baker, John Hurt, Barry Cryer, Leo Sayer and Robbie Williams. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS By the age of 5 Lizzy was already imitating entertainers she saw on TV. She was born to act. In the late 80s, early 90s, London was still affordable, even for struggling actors. London is really a series of little towns that are patched together. In the West End, wherever you look, history hits you in the face. Once you have lived outside of London for a while you forget that the city has its own behavioural norms. The Gielgud Theatre had two previous names. The Regency Rooms was known for its cabaret comedy, but a lot of big bands also played there. Acting in a soap opera requires a different skillset. The insights Lizzie shares about how they make 2.5 hours of TV in under a week are fascinating. BEST MOMENTS “If I go back up there, they tell me I sound like a Cockney t**t.” “It took me a while to get London.” “Do you remember that wonderful word “profit share” that translates to profit loss?” “My acting career took off by going through the back door of Cabaret comedy stand up.” “When I met you, you were running the asylum at the time.” “I know I can do a bit of stand-up, but I could not be a street performer.” “There´s something magical about Liverpool.” “Hollyoaks, it's more dangerous than a Mexican drug cartel.” “I haven´t got the London code anymore.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1575301 https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/lizzie-roper HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. We had the pleasure of interviewing Grace Davies over Zoom video!Grace Davies unveils her latest single 'Another Night,' a masterfully crafted, feel-good pop anthem which showcases her remarkable vocals and creative talent within songwriting & music production. The track's infectious energy immediately captivates listeners, creating an irresistible and timeless soundscape that will leave you instantly hooked.Crafted in collaboration with producer Paul Whalley & topliner Ben Lythe, 'Another Night' draws inspiration from Grace's childhood musical influences, notably ABBA, infusing the track with a nostalgic, warm, fuzzy feeling that resonates deeply with us all. The production masterfully balances retro elements with contemporary pop sensibilities - creating a unique for current times, yet universally appealing sound that wraps listeners in a comforting sonic embrace. ‘Another Night' is a result of an unconventional songwriting approach for Grace – working backwards from melody to lyrics. "I never work like that, normally" Grace reveals. "I usually have a specific topic I want to write about, come in with lyrics pre-prepared, and then find a melody. This time “Producer Paul” had the piano part already in his voice notes and I just mumbled gibberish over the top that happened to sound like the words “Another Night”. It was really fun to imagine what the song could be about from a title, rather than picking from past experiences." Grace, Ben & Paul have become somewhat of a “dream-team”, in their own words, across the forthcoming project - with ‘Another Night' being their inaugural co-write together. At its core, 'Another Night' explores the delicate balance of relationships pushed to their breaking point. The track delves into the territory of paranoia in love, chronicling the moment when small grievances snowball into irreparable damage. The song's gradual build-up mirrors this emotional journey, culminating in a powerful revelation of vulnerability and regret. Yet, true to Grace's artistic vision, she transforms this heavy narrative into an uplifting dance-pop experience. When listening to Grace Davies' single ‘Another Night' she playfully notes, "You can't help but dance... ‘Dance Cry', my personal favourite genre!" This brilliant juxtaposition of emotional depth and catchy chorus, paired with the nostalgic melodies, creates a fun pop anthem that is not only relatable but encourages listeners to find joy and have fun, even in life's more challenging moments.About Grace DaviesGrace Davies is a 27-year-old singer, songwriter, musician and producer from Blackburn, Lancashire. Since the beginning of her career, Grace has scored huge success, with over 100M+ streams for her songs on Spotify alone, support across the board at radio and acclaim everywhere from The Sunday Times to the BBC. At the age of 18, Grace's first self-released project received national BBC Introducing support, was championed by BBC 6 Music and had a track remixed by Radio 1 Dance Music DJ, Danny Howard. In 2017, she was invited to appear on the X Factor and her audition video of original song ‘roots' went viral. In a first for the show, Grace shook up the format by showcasing her original material throughout the competition and triumphed as runner up - gaining a top 2 iTunes chart position and numerous top 10s. 2020 marked the start of a new era in Grace's career – her debut EP Friends With The Tragic reaffirmed her reputation as an exceptional songwriter. Following the closure of her former label SYCO, she self-released her second EP I Wonder If You Wonder in 2021, which was an even bigger success - with standout release ‘roots' (written solely by Grace), reaching the Top 3 in the UK iTunes Single Charts, the Official Charts Top 100 and the UK Big Top 40, as well as plays on BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, Heart & Capital FM. Her last EP, It Wasn't Perfect, But We Tried sees her at her most confident and in the producer's chair for the first time. As well as writing credits on all five songs, she co-produced three tracks, and fully produced two of the tracks herself, proving her a true multi-hyphenate. Grace's catalogue continues to gain in popularity for sync in international TV programmes, including Love Island, Britain's Got Talent, I'm A Celebrity (Get Me Out Of Here), Strictly Come Dancing, American Idol, Eastenders, Hollyoaks and many more. Grace is completely owning her sound and is never happier than being at the forefront of her projects, both sonically as well as creatively. As a result, she is blazing a trail for women in a male-dominated industry. Grace Davies has had a consistent stream of incredibly crafted music that deeply connects her to her listeners; part of that body work includes her previous single “A Wonderful, Boring, Normal Life'  generating acknowledgement from Clash Magazine, Equate Magazine and The Official Charts Company.  Now with her latest single 'Another Night,' she channels her artistic excellence into a nostalgic pop anthem that proves Grace Davies is back better than ever, ready to dominate both playlists and dance floors across the UK.We want to hear from you! Nigel's guest today is Andrew Hayden-Smith. Andrew rose to fame on the cult kids' TV show Byker Grove in the late 1990s and early noughties and went on to be a pretty much permanent fixture on kids' TV for many years. He was the poster boy for countless teen magazines and ended up hosting Children's BBC, the most wholesome of telly jobs. So when Andrew decided to come out as a gay man at the age of 21 in the pages of Attitude Magazine it caused quite a splash. But thankfully this didn't stop him from going on to star in popular TV shows like Hollyoaks, Dr Who and Cucumber. This series is a celebration of a beautiful queer community; people of all ages, people who have had to tread their own path to live their real truth, who have fought with their emotions and emerged victorious, who inspire, who aspire and always entertain. Hosted by Nigel May. Every week, Nigel speaks to a person from the LGBTQ+ rainbow to hear their story; one person, one life, one conversation. We are back with episode 434 of the Geektown Radio podcast and Matt from Entertainment Talk joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews! It's been a few weeks since Matt has been on the show, but we begin with a discussion about some massive changes in a (nearly) 30-year-old British institution... 'Hollyoaks'... (and yes, it is that old!) While Dave hasn't watched for years, Matt brings some news of the utter craziness going on with that soap, including a huge time-jump and the axing of over 20 characters. Outside of UK soaps drama, he also reviews the Paramount+ series 'Yellowjackets', and Netflix animated series 'The Dragon Prince'. Meanwhile, Dave has been spending hours (...and hours) building factories in the utterly brilliant 'Satisfactory', which released into 1.0 this week. He also reviews new BBC drama 'Nightsleeper', and the final outing for Clarkson, Hammond and May, in 'The Grand Tour: One For The Road'.Moving over to the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including the stalling of 'Good Omens', ITV booking more ‘Red Eye', and the BBC still having 'Daddy Issues'. We also discuss the the surprises (and no surprises) at the 2024 Emmy Awards, a new horror from Ryan Murphy, and a new comedy from Jon Brown and Armando Iannucci. On our latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Corrie shown between the 26th February and the 1st March 2024 (Episodes #11198 - 11203). The truth is out about Tommy and Tracy's affair, and it was only a matter of time before Steve found out - though we must admit, we weren't admitting that part to come so soon! The trouble is, how are we supposed to care about it if the characters themselves don't even seem to? Meanwhile, Jenny and Daisy have a close call this week as Carla comes close to stumbling upon the truth about them using her stolen money to buy the Rovers - and that's not even the half of Daisy's problems this week thanks to the publication of a certain salacious magazine article. Also this week, Dee-Dee does her best to move on from Joel, Bobby raises his concerns about Lauren's disappearance to the police, and Adam hits a snag with Harvey's appeal - we just hope for his sake he's got plenty of free minutes with his phone contract, what with all those calls to the prison he's making! Quite a bit to go over in The Kabin this week, including a truly terrifying Coronation Street eBay listing and rumours that we're going to be seeing a certain Corrie redhead enter the Big Brother house next week. We also weigh in on the news that Hollyoaks is being cut to three episodes a week - no doubt it's terrible for everyone who's allegedly being made redundant, but could it lead to a better show, and would it work for Corrie? We round off the podcast with more of your feedback, including one reader's question about which recent episode of Corrie we'd show a first-time watcher. How we doing gang? Keeping cosy as the night draws in even quicker? We hope so. After last weeks cracking conversation with Neil Forsyth, we leave deepest Soho and head out of London to sit down with acclaimed actor, award winning fighter (more of that in the episode) and all round good bloke, Warren Brown.  You'll be familiar with Warren's work on television over the years: Hollyoaks, Good Cop, The responder and of course as DS Justin Ripley in the BBC show Luther.  Craig and Warren talk about beginnings in the North of England, travels around the world with Muay-Thai boxing and how a job can take you to go and live down under.  We're so chuffed to welcome Warren into our final countdown as it's been a longtime coming.  Get that brew, pop those feet up and enjoy.  Craig Parkinson  If you've enjoyed listening to this episode then please click through to patreon.com/twoshotpod to make a donation to the running costs of the show.
