Wowie! So many excellent fragrances to get your noses around in this episode, it was difficult to know where to begin. But with so many to explore we started with a recap of the recent barnstorming success of Barnes Fragrance Fair...We talked through Suzy's choices for her sold-out talk with Alice du Parcq (and if you couldn't go or were there but missed any of the talks: never fear! They were all recorded and will be on the Barnes Fragrance Fair YouTube channel when they're all edited. We'll let you know when they're up, but meanwhile you can watch last year's talks there, including the ‘Top of the morning' show we so loved doing.)Suzy chose:Shloksha Soapy HeartBased in Tunbridge Wells, founder Jay says “Moving from India to the UK in mytwenties, I do miss the immersive sensory joys found in everyday Indian culture.Sourcing and working with traditional Indian materials connects me to mychildhood—scented trips down memory lane!”Opening notes - red mandarin and grapefruitHeart notes - jasmine, ylang ylang, green grass and saffronBase notes – sandalwood, fruity musk, oudh“You slip on your fine silk robe, gorgeously patterned with tropical birds, andquietly pad along the hallway to the bathroom. Your life is very busy and demanding, and you get few opportunities to indulge yourself. Infused with caramel, tonka, vanilla, and benzoin, this creamy haze lends the amber structure an irresistibleand unforgettable signature. A fragrance that draws you in… and keeps youclose."‘With Ambre Latte, Jordi Fernandez offers a unique and exquisitely refined takeon indulgence. The fragrance unfolds in a vaporous cloud of almond milk, delicately infused with roasted tonka bean. Indulgence settles in — irresistibleyet perfectly controlled — as a luscious dulce de leche caramel melts into theenveloping softness of vanilla, benzoin and white musks.Very soon, the fragrance reveals its duality. Beneath the milky caress emergesan intensely addictive woody-amber alchemy. Ambrofix, Georgywood,Akigalawood and white sandalwood structure the composition, infusing it withdepth, sophistication and modernity. They extend the trail with sensual richness, leaving an unforgettable imprint — the perfect balance between gourmandiseand addiction.'Escentric Molecules Cologne OneSuzy described this as feeling like a Cologne that's been whizzed up in a SodaStream machine! The brand says: ‘Cologne One captures the freshness of a ginand tonic in a single, sparkling gesture: effervescent, bright, unmistakably clean. The fragrance lives in its top notes: juniper for the gin, lime and citrus for lift, atouch of bergamot and mandarin, a whisper of ginger for a delicate spiciness, and a hint of cucumber's neutrality to enhance the crispness without becomingliteral. It is freshness concentrated, transparent, and immediate. The heart remains understated: iris, rose, and hedione offer just enoughstructure to support the top note, allowing the bright citrus and juniper to linger. The dry down is linear, calm, and unobtrusive: Ambroxan, Iso E Super, and atrace of musk. Nothing competes, nothing distracts.“We have a very different approach to fragrance, so our first cologne capturesthe very unique and wonderful freshness of a gin and tonic. I think it's quite newwith that sort of freshness. It's the idea of the sparkling, effervescent gin andtonic first scent, this sort of your nose in the drink,” says perfumer Geza Schoen.Cologne One is a cologne reimagined by Escentric Molecules: 15% concentrationfor lasting freshness without leaving an overwhelmingly fragrant impression. It isrefreshing, refined, and gender-neutral....

Sniffing a whale's breath doesn't sound all that appealing. But a recent study suggested that a good sniff could help scientists analyze a whale's health. The study looked at North Atlantic right whales—among the most endangered of all whales. In fact, they're called “right” whales because they were just right for whalers: they're slow, they stay close to shore, and they have a lot of blubber, so they float after they're killed and they yield a lot of oil. By the early 1900s, they'd been hunted to near extinction; the population might have dropped to just a hundred or so. Today, the population has rebounded to about four hundred. Scientists are trying to find ways to protect those whales and help the species grow. One way to do that is to keep a close eye on the health of the whales. And that's what the study was all about. Scientists watched whales in Cape Cod Bay, in Massachusetts, during the spring foraging seasons from 2016 to 2024. Drones carrying petri dishes hovered above the whales' blow holes. When a whale exhaled, the drone snagged a sample. Scientists then analyzed the microbes in the whale's breath. They compared those samples to other measures of the whale's health. They found that healthier whales had higher levels of helpful bacteria in their breath. Less-healthy whales had higher levels of nasty bacteria. The study suggests that it might be possible to measure the health of a right whale just by sniffing its breath. The post Whale Breath appeared first on Marine Science Institute. New Zealand tech firm Scentian Bio has developed a digital nose that can be used to detect the tiny chemicals associated with everything from fruit ripeness to sickness in human breath. It's based around sensors which use insect smell receptors .. which are thought to be a thousand times more sensitive than a sniffer dog. Here to tell us more about it is Scentian Bio's Chief Executive Jonathan Good.
Today we've got a whole lot of misbehaving people in store for you. First, the badly behaving foreigners in the form of Pattaya bar fights and lazy Phuket travelers, Then, the badly behaving monks in the form of a 50-year sentence for temple embezzlement not to mention the ones drinking and sniffing glue! After that we've got ladyboys getting naughty and then getting fined over viral Songkran videos. Finally we've got a funeral gone wild as a family honors a man's final wish to have exotic dancers at the ceremony.

In “Sniffing Out American Truffles,” Gravy reporter Irina Zhorov explores truffle production in the U.S.—and how the South is emerging as a hub. Truffle production in the U.S. is a young industry. Commercial cultivation started in the 1980s. Truffles are a complicated business. When you're farming truffles, what you're really growing is trees. The truffles are fungi that grow on tree roots. The tree and the fungi work synergistically, the tree providing sugars to the fungi for nourishment and the fungi helping the roots reach further into the soil to absorb more nutrients. For this relationship to work well, and for truffles to flourish, the type of tree and fungi must be a good match, the soil ought to be of sufficiently high pH, and weather and moisture need to be suitable. Europeans, particularly in Italy and France, figured out the formula to make this complex system function. Truffle orchards once abounded on the continent. World Wars I and II, as well as changing land use, destroyed many of those operations, but the industry there is still established. When American farmers began to seed their truffle orchards, most of them imported European truffle varieties on European trees. European truffles are big and delicious, and want-to be growers knew that system worked. But European trees have struggled in North America; they lack defenses for local pests, and many of the early orchards have died out. An operation in North Carolina, Burwell Farms, tried something different. They inoculated native loblolly pines with the European bianchetto truffle variety. They're now the most productive truffle orchard in the United States, but they still can't keep up with growing demand. As the industry matures, there are also attempts to cultivate native truffle varieties, like the Appalachian truffle, the Blue Ridge truffle, and other newly discovered species. And there's growing interest in foraging for native truffles, too. The industry is becoming increasingly attuned to local varieties and possibilities to make this luxurious product our own. In this episode of Gravy, Zhorov visits Burwell Farms and follows their dogs at work harvesting truffles. We hear from Burwell Farms' Jeffrey Coker; Margaret Townsend, president of the North American Truffle Growers Association and owner of NewTown Truffiere; chef Joe Kindred on what excites him about local truffles; and North Carolina extension agents Katie Learn and Jeanine Davis on local varieties. In 1692, Brother Lawrence’s work The Practice of the Presence of God was first published. In it, he described how he invited God into his mundane daily activities. Brother Lawrence’s words still challenge us to prayerfully seek God in everything we do, like mowing the yard, getting groceries, or walking the dog. Each day, I take our dog, Winston, for a walk. My goal for him is to exercise. Winston’s goal? Sniffing everything. Calling this time “a walk” is a generous fiction. More often, we’re going for a . . . stop. Lately, instead of getting frustrated by a lack of forward progress, I’ve been asking God to help me see these moments as a reminder that life is a lot like walking a dog. We experience God’s presence as we faithfully obey Him in life’s everyday activities, including their unexpected interruptions. In Proverbs 6, Solomon offers a similar lesson, using the everyday, humble example of the ant to call us to work faithfully: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise” (v. 6). Solomon used ants as an example of everyday, patient labor (vv. 7-8). Our relationship with God needn’t be compartmentalized into designated “spiritual” times alone, like church or a quiet time. Instead, as we faithfully obey Him, God invites us to see His divine fingerprints throughout each day.

Pack your bags (and maybe a clothespin for your nose) because this week on Hysteria 51 we're going interplanetary and intestinal.First up: luxury travel has officially left Earth. A startup is taking reservations—yes, real money—to be among the first guests at a proposed hotel on the Moon. We're talking deposits that can range from “casual quarter-mil” to a full $1,000,000 just to hold your spot, with the total trip potentially climbing far beyond that once you factor in the whole “rocket commute” situation. It's space tourism with a side of “do they validate parking in low gravity?” Then we come crashing back down to Earth with science that sounds like it was invented in a middle-school cafeteria: the idea that “sniffing farts” could help protect your brain. Under the jokes is a real research thread around hydrogen sulfide (the “rotten egg” gas associated with flatulence) and how it may help protect brain cells in Alzheimer's-related mouse studies—less “weaponized crop dusting,” more “biochemistry doing something weird and promising.” So if you like your weird news with equal parts sci-fi dreams and “please don't say that out loud,” this episode is your perfect storm: moon hotel reservations, space-tourism absurdity, and the unexpectedly serious science of stink.Links & Resources

Leaking barrels have been a problem for whisky makers going back generations, and just finding the bad barrels is the biggest part of the problem. Now, a test project involving Royal Barkla, a Boston Robotics robot dog equipped with an ethanol sensor, is underway at the John Dewar & Sons Poniel maturation campus near Glasgow. The robotic dog alerts its human operators when it discovers a leaking barrel, and so far, the test has been a success. We'll talk with Bacardi's Angus Holmes about the project on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, no layoffs are expected from the shutdown of the Jim Beam Distillery in Kentucky for 2026, while Scotch whisky global sales are down for the third straight year.
