Too often, legal departments are on their heels defending litigation and managing unwieldy litigation budgets. Legal departments can generate an ROI for their companies by engaging in affirmative litigation. But who has the budget for that? At 20 years old, Eva Shang figured out how to turn litigation into investment returns and is now running a tech-enabled investment firm focused on litigation funding. Legalist, the company she co-founded with Christian Haigh at Y Combinator, now manages $1.5 billion in alternative investments in litigation funding, bankruptcy, and government receivables. In this episode, Eva, now the firm's CEO, shares how litigation funding works, how Legalist's "truffle sniffer" technology sources litigation cases for her team of in-house attorneys to underwrite and evaluate for investment. Eva shares insights on how to evaluate cases and "pick a winner", how to get litigation counsel to set and stick to a budget, and how her team that a "win" will be collectable at the end of the day. And as a bonus, Eva shares insights of what the CEO wants from their lawyers. Turns out, mitigating risk isn't at the top of the list.

That's just an expression, the thing about sniffing glue, and I doubt many UVA sports fans actually partake, but whatever the vice is, you're probably doing more of it now, with your football and basketball teams partying like it's 2009. My effort at helping you find healthier ways to deal with your anxieties is this podcast. The topics: UVA Football: How bad have things gotten, really? An examination SMU left its starting quarterback in to throw a TD pass with 1:42 to go up 33-7, which should p— you off, if you're a UVA Football fan, because SMU doesn't need the style points, since the win here on Saturday puts the Mustangs into the ACC title game, and in control of its own CFP destiny. UVA Football: Tony Elliott isn't interested in your opinion on who should be his QB UVA Footballcoach Tony Elliott has clearly had enough of you idjits who didn't call the plays for Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence as Clemson was winning natties trying to tell him who to play at quarterback. Inside the Numbers: Simplified game plan, play-calling doomed UVA Football offense The UVA Football offense never had a chance on Saturday against SMU, and it started with the game plan, the coaching given to the quarterback, and the play calling. UVA Basketball: The analytics of how bad that trip to the Bahamas was Last week's 70-point night against Villanova in Baltimore seems like a fever dream for UVA Basketball fans, who have the nightmarish 42-point throwback to the 2023-2024 ‘Hoos that ran Tony Bennett out of the sport fresh in their minds. Fair or not, Ron Sanchez doesn't have a lot of time to figure things out Ahead of this week, UVA Basketball hadn't lost back-to-back games by 22 or more since 2008.

What to listen for:In today's episode of K9 Detection Collaborative, our hosts Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing discuss the keys to cleaning up your dog's behavior chain to help them stay on track and avoid distractions in the field. When it comes to reinforcing behavior, it's just as important to get clear on when not to train particular habits. Their rule of thumb? Avoid reinforcing tactics during moments of frustration in your dog. It's important to be systematic when training for search & rescue scenarios, setting clear boundaries and expectations for your dog, all while respecting their autonomy so that they can make snap decisions with confidence in high-stakes situations. With Deb Jones's Focus Unified Field Theory as their guide, the Dames of Detection navigate the complexities of canine focus in four areas—external, self, trainer, and task focuses. Understanding these focus types is crucial for managing distractions and maintaining a dog's attention during challenging search tasks. They dive into strategies that build a strong reinforcement system, allowing dogs to handle complex searches without becoming overwhelmed. They also explain why it's crucial to actively train blank areas with the intention of striking a balance between engagement and overwhelm for both handler and dog. Finally, Robin, Stacy, and Crystal define “self-employing” actions, and why it's a good idea to steer clear from reinforcing such behaviors, as well as the keys to nurturing understanding when building on and optimizing your dog's behavior chain.Key Topics:Why You Shouldn't Try Reinforcing Behaviors During Moments of Frustration (00:00)Systematic Searching and Maintaining Your Dog's Autonomy (05:51)When and When Not to Praise Your Dog (10:53)Four Types of Focus (17:52)The Importance of Actively Training Blank Areas (25:50)“Don't Reinforce Them For Self-Employing” (29:30)Building the Desire to do the Job Right (35:13)Building Understanding (41:03)Dames of Detection Takeaways (50:48)Resources:Deb Jones and the F.O.C.U.S Dog Training System: https://k9infocus.com/shiny-new-thoughts-on-focus/ | https://k9infocus.com/Join Robin for her winter webinar series!FENZI WebinarsFENZI CampWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. In today's episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara breaks down the latest updates on Donald Trump's security concerns, focusing on reports of suspicious activity near his New York rally. Initial claims of explosive devices were quickly disputed by Nassau County police, but Sara highlights the heightened stakes after multiple assassination attempts on Trump. The discussion shifts to Ryan Routh, the man behind the recent attempt on Trump's life. Sara dives into Routh's criminal history — over 100 charges and 74 arrests — revealing his repeated presence on the FBI's radar since 2019. Despite his serious offenses, Routh has never faced significant jail time, raising suspicions of Deep State involvement. Sara and her guests explore unsettling parallels between Routh and notorious figures like Lee Harvey Oswald, questioning how a man with such a dangerous background remains free. The FBI's handling of Routh's case, especially in liberal jurisdictions, suggests a troubling pattern of leniency toward criminals with potential agency ties. The episode also takes aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, who dodged questions about inflation and national safety all while admitting she feels safe under Secret Service protection. Sara calls out the hypocrisy, pointing out how the political elite enjoy safety while pushing policies that leave everyday Americans vulnerable. Sara exposes the growing immigration crisis in places like Springfield, Ohio, and Charleroi, Pennsylvania, where illegal Haitian immigrants are overwhelming communities. From eating pets to overwhelming schools, Sara underscores the dire consequences of the Biden-Harris administration's immigration policies. The episode wraps up with a critique of the New York Times tech workers' strike threats, showcasing the absurdity of their demands and revealing the growing disconnect between media elites and real-world challenges. Sara is joined by Blaze Media investigative journalist Steve Baker and Jason Buttrill, chief writer and researcher for Glenn Beck. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A new study suggests that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs may have originated from the outer parts of the solar system. And, invasive spotted lanternflies often lay eggs on vehicles and shipped goods. Now researchers are training dogs to sniff them out before they hatch.Asteroid That Killed The Dinosaurs Was A Carbon-Rich RockAround 66 million years ago, an asteroid slammed into the Earth, blasted debris everywhere, plummeted the planet into cold darkness, and ended the age of dinosaurs. (Though birds survived, of course.)It might be the most famous disaster in our planet's history, but scientists still have plenty of questions about it. Like, what was the asteroid made of? And where did it come from? A new study in the journal Science offers up some long-awaited answers.Guest host Rachel Feltman speaks with study author Dr. Mario Fischer-Gödde, a geochemist at the University of Cologne in Germany.Training Dogs To Stop The Spread Of Spotted LanternfliesIn 10 years, the spotted lanternfly has gone from non-existent in the U.S. to being established in at least 16 states. They're quite distinct: The adults measure about an inch long, they've got striking red and black markings, and are, as the name suggests, spotted. And they've got a worrisome tendency to chow down on certain plants, including grapevines, and some fruit and hardwood trees.Spotted lanternflies are able to spread so effectively in part because they tend to lay eggs on things that travel from state to state: shipping supplies, vehicles, and lumber. There's a new tactic to detect spotted lanternfly eggs before they can hatch: training dogs to sniff them out. Guest host Rachel Feltman speaks to two researchers behind this project: Dr. Nathan Hall, director of the Canine Olfaction Research and Education Laboratory at Texas Tech in Lubbock, and Dr. Erica Feuerbacher, associate professor of applied animal welfare and behavior at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.Read the full story here.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
