Bek Andersen received an MFA in photography from the Yale School of Art in 2017 after working for several years as a fashion and entertainment photographer in New York City. A queer spiritualist raised by devout Mormon parents in a suburb of Oklahoma City, Andersen’s work is concerned with the fictive and performative identities of power, gender, sex and the mythologies through which the present claims authenticity. This background situates the work between a variety of technologies and attendant politics of display. Her photographs and installations present visions of truth as a provocation to look more closely at the narratives that shape our worldview. Derek Fridman, design partner at Work & Co, talks about his background in street art, specifically wheatpasting—poster graffiti applied with a homemade glue made of flour and water. He also talks about a close shave with Lucasfilm, the failings of the InstaPot and how “The Mandalorian” succeeds as episodic, appointment television.
Caledonia Curry (aka Swoon) is a classically trained, Brooklyn-based visual artist and printmaker, and easily one of the best-known street artists in the world! Caledonia sits down with Conrad Benner to talk about her career and her retrospective open now at the Contemporary Arts Centre in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Season One of the Streets Dept Podcast is brought to you by our sponsors at The Navy Yard and Indy Hall! Episodes are mixed and edited by our Producer Mike Mehalick.)
Pod Sequentialism with Matt Kennedy presented by Meltdown comics
Meltdown Presents: Pod Sequentialism with Matt Kennedy #06 - Newsprint to Wheatpaste: How Comics Influenced Graffiti The rise of street art parallels the rise of the superhero. Is this a coincidence or are the two somehow related? Mason Booker joins Matt again to look at the history of graffiti, the influence of comics on spray can art, and the possibility that comics erase barriers that no other medium can. Produced by Mason Booker. Engineered by Mason Booker Theme music "Rumble" provided by www.Bensound.com Logo design by Joshua Geisler www.selfuno.com.
