In this episode, the Qulitcon Raleigh recap is here, and it was equal parts craft, culture, and conversation. In this episode, we take you inside Quiltcon in Raleigh, North Carolina, where modern quilting showed up loud, smart, and impossible to ignore. We're breaking down the momentseveryone'ss been talking about, including the viral quilts making the rounds on Threads. Yes, the political ones. These pieces prove quilting is not just cozy decor, it'ss visual storytelling with a point of view. We spotlight the most talked-about designs, what made them hit online, and why message-driven quilting is having a real moment right now.Plus, we sit down for a brief interview with quilter Charles Cameron, who shares what inspired his work, how he thinks about meaning in textile art, and what he hopes people feel (and question) when they see a quilt that speaks back. shares how he created his quilt through A Bee, a group of quilters across the United States who connect on Instagram and other social media. Members take turns writing a monthly prompt, others have 30 days to make blocks in response, and the prompt-writer assembles the finished quilt based on their vision. Charles describes coming to quilting from an engineering background, learning by studying improv quilts and experimenting by cutting and reassembling fabric using an inexpensive $80 Singer sewing machine. He emphasizes that quilting is not about having the newest tools, and advises beginners to "just do it," noting mistakes are fixable by undoing stitches and trying again. This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm joined by Matt Harr of Harr Craft Goods. Matt is a fourth generation quilter with a lifelong love of fabric and sewing. While building a career in dance and performing arts, his sewing skills stayed close at hand through costuming and creative problem solving. When the 2020 pandemic brought the performing arts world to a halt, Matt took a hard look at what was next and chose to pivot fully into sewing and quilting.During that time, Matt turned to TikTok, where his sewing tutorials quickly grew into a community. At a moment when so many of us were isolated, Matt helped create an online space where quilters could learn, connect, and feel less alone. That sense of shared experience continues to shape his work today. Now, Matt designs patterns, works at a local quilt shop, teaches workshops, and speaks at retreats and guilds. He also has a deep love for the fashion side of the quilt world, which led him to collaborate with the Modern Quilt Guild to create the very first fashion show at QuiltCon 2026. Matt hopes to keep curating and emceeing a space where quilted garments get the celebration they deserve, honoring the hours of love and labor that go into every piece. This conversation is fun, thoughtful, and a perfect way to ease back into everyday life after QuiltCon. Please enjoy my chat with Matt Harr, and be sure to check out his work at harrcraftgoods.com and on Instagram at Instagram @harrcraftgoods.Want to see more? Get ready for a burst of color and creativity as we visit with the amazing Mac! We dove deep into her transition from social work and paper crafting into the vibrant world of quilting, sparked by a life-changing trip to QuiltCon. Mac shared all the deets on her journey as a quilting influencer, traveling the country and building a fantastic community through her YouTube channel. From her love of rainbow color schemes to her signature nail art, Mac's passion for personal expression truly shines through. We even chatted about her favorite snacks, including a popcorn recipe that sounds like a total game-changer. It was a heartfelt session that perfectly captured the joy of making and the bonds we share through our craft! The fun didn't stop at quilting, as we explored everything from high-tech tools to adult LEGO building! We compared the magic of the Singer Memento and AccuQuilt machines while getting real about the struggle of balancing hobby time with "adulting." Mac also gave us a peek into her "modest" fabric stash and her tendency to collect patterns like they're going out of style. Between discussions on new applique techniques and a sweet closing poem about friendship, this episode was a total celebration of the maker spirit. We're so inspired by Mac's "old pro" energy and her love for all things bright and bold! Enjoy!Send a textFollow Leslie on Instagram at @leslie_quilts and Rochelle at @doughnutwarrior

This week, the girls catch up on Galentine's. Rochelle had 2, yes TWO, Galentine's Retreats back to back and they had quite the adventures! Meanwhile, Leslie's crushing it in the quilt kit business—she sold 60 kits in record time after Angela Walters told her to go big or go home. Rochelle dropped some serious wisdom bombs about fabric cutting efficiency, including the genius hack of using custom-cut plexiglass rulers from the hardware store (mind = blown). They geeked out over custom quilting projects, including Rochelle's challenge of writing entire Jelly Roll song lyrics in cursive on a quilt (harder than it sounds, folks). Leslie's grandmother's pixel quilt is getting the Proverbs 31 treatment with echo quilting techniques. Plus, there's drama at the dentist (nitrous oxide for the win), leopard print trench coats making their QuiltCon debut, and a 13-year-old designer getting an award. These two prove that quilting isn't just a craft—it's a lifestyle, a business, and a whole lot of fun! Enjoy!Send a textFollow Leslie on Instagram at @leslie_quilts and Rochelle at @doughnutwarrior
Hillary Goodwin has been a modern quilter from the early days of the establishment of the Modern Quilter Guild and has had at least one and often several quilts juried into every Quiltcon since 2015 (minus Quiltcon away when she was busy ER doctoring during the pandemic and didn't submit any). Before there were restrictions on the numbers of quilts juried into Quiltcon per person, she has had the most on record-8 of her own and 1 in a group quilt in 2017. She has a Best of Show Quilt from Quiltcon 2022 and she was also part of a group quilt that won Best of Show in 2019. She designed and made the Quiltcon Raffle quilt in collaboration with Rachael Dorr in 2020. Her work has been featured in the books “Why We Quilt”, “Quilt Out Loud” and “Country Cottages” and in multiple magazines including the cover of Quiltcon Magazine 2025. She was the featured artist at Quilt SanFrancisco in 2024 had a solo show at “Hello Stitch Studio” in 2019 and has had her work displayed in multiple group shows throughout the world. Lastly, her quilt “Nude is Not a Color”, a community project was acquired and is part of the permanent collection of The Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, Michigan. You can find Hillary's website right here: https://entropyalwayswinsblog.com/Quilter on Fire Website - https://quilteronfire.com/OLISO IRONS - Host of the Quilter on Fire Podcast Lounge each year at QuiltCon!BUY YOUR OWN OLISO MINI PROJECT IRON RIGHT HERESquare One Textile Art WorkshopJoin Brandy's email listFree Quilter on Fire Holiday Table Runner VIDEOSUPPORT THE PODCAST by becoming a Quilter on Fire Podcast Angel for as little as $3 per week.Support the showThank you for listening to the Quilter on Fire Podcast.
This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, my guest is Cole Whitaker of Cole's Quilts. Cole is an educator at Bellevue College in Washington, a quilt designer, and a custom longarmer whose work is as thoughtful as it is stunning.Cole learned to sew at the age of five from his grandmother, planting a creative seed that stayed with him throughout his life. After high school, he channeled that creativity into the world of cosmetology, spending twenty years teaching and mentoring students. Over time, physical limitations led Cole to step away and seek answers, eventually receiving diagnoses of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and autism. Leaning into his love of learning, Cole earned a Master of Science degree in Psychology and found a calling in supporting neurodivergent students in higher education.Throughout all of this, quilting remained a constant. Cole did not feel at home in traditional piecing and chose instead to trust his skills and pursue his own creative vision. That leap paid off in a big way. His quilt earned Best of Show at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, traveled to Houston, and later won second place for Piecing at QuiltCon. The experience was life changing and showed Cole that he could thrive in education while also creating quilts that deeply resonate with others.Today, Cole balances teaching with quilting. He designs quilt patterns, sells kits, hosts sew alongs, and provides custom longarm services. His love for the quilting community shines through in everything he does. Visit www.colesquilts.comto explore Cole's work and learn more about Cole's Quilts Academy. This is a powerful and inspiring conversation you will not want to miss.Want to see more? Kim Jamieson-Hirst is the founder of Chatterbox Quilts — a quilter, teacher, pattern-designer, vintage-machine lover, and — let's face it — delightful human being. She's the voice behind hundreds of YouTube videos, thoughtful blog posts, (she did a Q&A blog post with me back 2015) That's a decade ago! She hosts online courses designed to help quilters get past fear, perfectionism, and “the quilt police.” Kim believes quilting is more than perfect seams and matchy-matchy blocks. It's about joy, experimentation, and community. She's built an online membership — The Quilter's Way — where quilters from around the world learn, stitch, laugh, share mistakes, and grow together. This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm thrilled to welcome Bianca Springer, the creative force behind Thanks I Made Them. Sew Can You. (@thanksimadethem). Bianca has an incredible eye for transforming second-hand clothing and quilts into bold, unforgettable garments that celebrate creativity, sustainability, and skill. She's especially known for her striking dresses made from yoyos and discarded quilt tops, breathing new life into materials with history and heart. While Bianca is deeply passionate about upcycling, she's equally committed to teaching sewing skills so others can make, mend, and care for their own clothes with confidence. Bianca has taught workshops across the community and has even more planned in the year ahead. She'll be teaching at QuiltCon 2026, where she'll also have a quilt hanging in the show, and in July 2026 she'll be leading workshops at the Estelle Center for Creative Arts. For nearly five years, Bianca wrote and drafted bag patterns for Sew News. Now she's reclaiming ownership of those designs and re-releasing them under her own brand. She's also the author of the powerful embroidery book Represent!, which offers techniques and motifs that uplift people of color while centering allyship and community. Bianca is a true bright spot in the sewing world. Be sure to follow her work at @thanksimadethem, and enjoy this inspiring conversation.Want to see more? Welcome back, everyone! We're diving in and this one was a festive mix of holiday chaos and serious stitching insights! The girls kicked things off with a wild discussion about the Elf on the Shelf and that age-old dilemma of needing last-minute gifts, which led to a brilliant hack for turning Moda quilt panels into personalized pillows—genius! They also got real about the ups and downs of long-arm quilting, including an epic tale of accidentally quilting a bobbin into a custom project, proving even the pros have "oops" moments. But hey, managing mistakes and mastering tension with a new gauge just means more lessons learned! But the fun didn't stop there! The group zipped right into planning mode, catching up on the latest buzz about QuiltCon—fire and all—and sharing exciting details about upcoming retreats, including one in sunny Hawaii. Also get the scoop on some heartwarming personal stories, like the quilter who unexpectedly picked up three new custom jobs after attending an hour-and-a-half-long San Antonio wedding! It's not all business, though; they wrapped up with cozy talks about family holiday traditions and the highly anticipated unboxing of a charcuterie-themed quilt board! This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, I'm so excited to finally sit down with Joshua Dunn of Lifting and Stitching, a maker who blends strength, science, and stitching in the coolest way possible. Joshua and I have spent plenty of time chatting behind the scenes, bonding over vegan food, lifting weights, and all the unexpected ways our creative lives overlap. His quilting inspiration often comes from the universe itself, using stunning images of space to spark bold, movement-filled designs. His quilt Red Giant, which hung at QuiltCon 2025, is just one jaw-dropping example of his cosmic creativity. Joshua also shares an exciting project for this year's Quiltmas Spectacular quilt-along, where he's one of the featured block designers! His candy cane–inspired block is rooted in a sweet childhood memory of hanging candy canes on the Christmas tree with his family, sentimental and festive all at once. With even more exciting projects on the horizon and inspiration that truly reaches beyond our home planet, Joshua is a maker you'll definitely want to keep an eye on. My guest today is Karlee Porter of Karlee Porter Designs! She's known for inventing Graffitti Quilting and she will invite you into her community with open arms to explore your free motion quilting potential. Karlee is a lifelong artist who transformed her passion into a quilting career. I met her a few years ago for the first time at QuiltCon. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about building a quilting business with my guest Michelle Cain. Michelle tried rather hard not to become a quilter. After growing up outside of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and having a mom who began quilting in the 1990s, this was a formidable challenge. A chance encounter with Denyse Schmidt's work, however, introduced Michelle to the world of modern quilting and convinced her there might be a place for her in it. She made her first quilt in 2013 and hasn't looked back. Wanting to connect with other makers, Michelle became active in the New Hampshire Modern Quilt Guild and started blogging about her quilting adventures as From Bolt to Beauty in 2014. In 2020, she formally launched From Bolt to Beauty patterns. Her projects have been featured at QuiltCon and in magazines like Curated Quilts and Love Patchwork & Quilting. In a previous life, Michelle wrote marketing copy and edited books, magazines, and websites. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, two teenage sons, and two naughty Golden Retrievers. Michelle lives not far from me and we were luckily able to record this interview in person in my studio. +++++ This episode is sponsored by The Academy for Virtual Teaching. My guest today is psychologist and lifelong knitter Nicole Nehrig, author of the book WITH HER OWN HANDS: Women Weaving Their Stories In this timely and powerful exploration, Nicole uncovers how women across centuries and cultures have used textile arts—knitting, weaving, embroidery—not only as creative outlets, but as tools of resistance, expression, survival, and connection. As a new generation rediscovers fiber arts for mindfulness and meaning, Nicole reclaims the intellectual and emotional legacy behind every stitch. This book touches on subjects such as feminist history, modern crafting culture, the neuroscience of making, and the stories we literally weave into the fabric of our lives.Quilter on Fire Website - https://quilteronfire.com/OLISO IRONS - Host of the Quilter on Fire Podcast Lounge each year at QuiltCon!BUY YOUR OWN OLISO MINI PROJECT IRON RIGHT HERESquare One Textile Art WorkshopJoin Brandy's email listFree Quilter on Fire Holiday Table Runner VIDEOSUPPORT THE PODCAST by becoming a Quilter on Fire Podcast Angel for as little as $3 per week.Support the showThank you for listening to the Quilter on Fire Podcast.
