We LOVE to read comments so please leave a comment and subscribe to Our channel:  https://www.youtube.com/writerslifeorg Grab your free writer's toolkit by going to  http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ hi there welcome along to a writer's life experience coming up for you this time how to be a successful self-published author becoming a successful self-published author is possible it takes time effort and strategic planning but if you are willing to dedicate yourself to your self-published book success there's no reason why it can't happen for you here's how be sure that self-publishing is the right way to go being an indie author is no picnic before you assume self-publishing is the way forward really research and understand the process and what you need to do to make it happen asking yourself how much time you can dedicate to the process and how much you're willing to learn and take on board are both critical questions to consider before you press publish next decide how much you need or want some urn self-publishing if done well can be way more lucrative than the traditional model the money available to self-published authors is enormous and if you treat your book like a business and yourself as a brand you can come up with proper workable strategies to sell more books if you're happy to treat your book sales as a pleasant side income then that's okay too the point is you need to be clear with yourself about what your goals are so you can then figure out how to reach it's a good idea to think about your writing going forward also self-published authors don't just stop at one book so can you afford and do you have the time to write say 1000 words a day if you do you could finish around five books a year the more you write the more you'll have to sell and the more potential your business has for profit next write books that people want to read sounds simple right a no-brainer the point is that most writers don't really honestly consider what their reader is looking for they write their story because they are so passionate and desperate to have it heard if you are honest with yourself however you can be sure that there is an audience out there clamoring to read it probably not if you want to be a successful self-published author you need to look at what people are reading and trends in the market and so on then do your research learn about the genre follow the rules in the formulas and you can produce something that already has an audience ready and waiting to read it next gather your fans to be successful you need to gather readers you need to find ways to get people excited about your book before it even hits the shelves do this by building an email list getting active on social media having a great author website all of this takes time and preparation and needs to be done well in advance of publishing your novel next never stop once you publish your novel you need to keep working on it promote it continually keep researching where you could tap into new audiences and most importantly keep writing to a real writers job is finished there is always more you can do so work tirelessly and don't stop until you are achieving the kind of success you always dreamed of and don't forget if you're struggling to write or for this your book our free writers toolkit can help with it you'll learn how to overcome procrastination get organized stay focused find time to write and finally get your book published to get access to it now while it's still available simply go to   http://www.writerslife.org/toolkit that's it for now as always please give us a thumbs up if you liked this video and subscribe to our channel for more my name's Peter this is writers life and I'll see you next time bye for now

We LOVE to read comments so please leave a comment and subscribe to Our channel:  https://www.youtube.com/writerslifeorg Grab your free writer's toolkit by going to  http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ hello there is pizza here again from writers life and coming up today is being a perfectionist holding you back writers are well known for being perfectionist and why not writing a novel to be proud of takes considerable time and effort and wanting to get it absolutely right before you send it to publishers or share it with the world makes good sense however there is a downsides of perfectionism if taken to the extreme while it's great to be contentious and thorough in your work if you won't let it go until there's a hundred percent perfect you're going to come up with a rather significant problem the problem is no piece of writing is perfect that's the truth of the matter even the most well-received novels and celebrated writers don't write perfect stories and they certainly don't start out anything near that way if you keep holding on to the idea that you can make your story perfect you'll never ever finish it so how to recognize perfectionist behavior and what to do about it if you're too self-critical if you never share your work if you edit your work so much that you want even sure if you're making it any better you may well be a perfectionist here then are some tips to help you get past this first get your first draft written tell yourself that you can perfect your writing later and then focus all your energy on getting that first draft now if you can put aside your aspirations of perfection until your first draft is finished at least you've got the ground load without letting your factionism get in the way next be realistic expense rejection expect to feel uncertain expect to look back at something you've written and feel shocked and how bad it is this is all completely normal the reality is that most writers will experience rejection and criticism and that's okay if you can be realistic about this and not let the fear of it happening to you block you from getting your work out there you will at least be able to say you gave it everything be willing to learn there are always lessons to be learned when it comes to writing from tips on how to improve your prose to information about the writing industry be open to learning as much as you can perfectionists often struggle with feedback and advice so trying to open up to learning experimenting and absorbing input for others can be so helpful keep practicing the more you write the better you get but also the more you write the more you will become used to the imperfections in your writing keep producing material keep tweaking it keep adjusting and reworking and editing and learn and grow as a writer and editor as you do so learn when to stop accepting that a perfect piece of writing doesn't exist is the first step it's usually important to work on our manuscripts until we've created the world the caring system the plot that we feel does our story justice it's essential to redraft and edit to these processes take time and effort and can be very challenging however this hard work is not to be confused with perfectionism knowing when to stop when you've done enough and when you can be proud satisfied with what you've achieved is so important as JK Rowling once said failure gave me an inner security that I had never been said by passing examinations failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way embrace failure accept your flaws and let go of perfectionism and you'll be a more productive and happier writer for it and don't forget if you're struggling to write or finish your book our free writers talking can help with it you'll learn how to overcome procrastination get organized stay focused find time to write and finally get your book published to get access now while it's still available simply go to http://www.writerslife.org/toolkit that's it   for now be sure to give us a thumbs up and to like this video and be sure to subscribe to our channel for more I'm Peter and I'll see you next time bye for now

to  http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Hi I'm Jodi from WritersLife.org and today we'll be talking about expert rules for writing fiction today we'll be looking at advice given by the experts Elmore Leonard says using adverbs is a mortal sin never open a book with the weather if it's only to create atmosphere and not a character's reaction to the weather you don't want to go on too long the reader is apt to leap ahead looking for people there are exceptions if you happen to be Barry Lopez who has more ways than an Eskimo to describe ice and snow in his book Arctic dreams you can do all the weather recording you want avoid prologues they can be annoying especially a prologue following an introduction that comes after a foreword but these are ordinarily found in nonfiction a prologue in a novel is back story and you can drop it anywhere you want there is a prologue in John Steinbeck sweet Thursday but it's okay because a character in the book makes the point of what my rules are all about he says I like a lot of talk in a book and I don't like to have nobody tell me what the guy that's talking looks like I want to figure out what he looks like from the way he talks keep your exclamation points under control you are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words never use the words suddenly or all hell broke loose this rule doesn't require an explanation I have noticed that writers who use suddenly tend to exercise less control in the application of exclamation points don't go into great detail describing places and things unless you're Margaret Atwood and can paint scenes with language you don't want descriptions that bring in the action the flow of the story to a standstill try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip think of what you skip reading in a novel thick paragraphs of prose you can see have too many words in them Margaret Atwood says hold the reader's attention this is likely to work better if you can hold your own but you don't know who the reader is so it's like shooting fish with a slingshot in the dark what fascinates a will bore the pants off be you most likely need a thesaurus a rudimentary grammar book and a grip on reality this latter means there's no free lunch writing is work and it's also a gamble you don't get a pension plan other people can help you a bit but essentially you're on your own nobody is making you do this you chose it so don't whine about it you can never read your own book with the innocent anticipation that comes with that first delicious page of a new book because you wrote the thing you've been backstage you've seen how the rabbits were smuggled into the Hat therefore ask a reading friend or two to look at it before you give it to anyone in the publishing business this friend should not be someone with whom you have a romantic relationship unless you want to break up don't sit down in the middle of the woods if you're lost in the plot or blocked retrace your steps to where you went wrong then take the other road or change the person change the tents change the opening page Roddy Doyle says do be kind to yourself fill pages as quickly as possible double spaced or write on every second line regard every new page as a small triumph until you get to page 50 then calm down and start worrying about the quality do feel anxiety it's the job do give the work a name as quickly as possible own it and see it Dickens new Bleak House was going to be called Bleak House before he started writing it the rest must have been easy do restrict your browsing to only a few websites a day don't go near the online bookies unless it's research Helen Dunmore says finish the day's writing when you still want to continue listen to what you have written a dud rhythm in a passage of dialogue may show that you don't yet understand the characters well enough to write their voices reread rewrites reread rewrites if it still doesn't work throw it away it's a nice feeling and you don't want it to be cluttered with the corpses of poems and stories which have everything in them except the life they need Esther Freud says a story needs rhythm read it out loud to yourself if it doesn't spin a bit of magic it's missing something editing is everything cut until you can't cut No or what is left often springs into life find your best time of the day for writing and writes don't let anything else interfere afterwards it won't matter to you that the kitchen is a mess don't wait for inspiration discipline is the key trust your reader not everything needs to be explained if you really know something and breathe life into it they'll know it to never forget even your own rules are
