In episode nine of the Write It Scared podcast, we discuss our common writing enemy, the inner critic, and how it can derail us and what we can do to prevent that from happening.I share an example of a writer who'd made great progress yet struggled with self-doubt to the point it nearly stopped them. We dig into the importance of tapping into one's inner wisdom to combat the critic and offer strategies to counteract that negative internal voice. We highlight the necessity of self-awareness, good habits, self-love, and gratitude and share tips for cultivating a relationship with one's inner writer's wisdom, including getting still, journaling, and asking for guidance. While the inner critic will never fully disappear, writers can learn to control its influence by fostering their inner wisdom, thus becoming their best allies in their writing journey. Lastly, I talk about my small group coaching programs as an option for writers seeking community, guidance, and support as they plan and draft their novels.00:00 The Struggle with the Inner Critic00:35 Overcoming the Inner Critic with Inner Wisdom01:09 A Personal Story of Battling the Inner Critic03:45 Introducing the Concept of Inner Writer's Wisdom05:23 Practical Tips for Cultivating Inner Wisdom06:32 Conclusion: Embracing Your Inner WisdomGroup Coaching: Novel Planning and Drafting Support with certified book coach Stacy Frazer of Write It Scared Recommended Reading: Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead by Tara Mohr This show note contains an affiliate link to bookshop.org. Jennifer Locke joins the podcast today, where we’ll discuss strategies for uncovering your voice and focusing in on your story.
Learn 3 practical tips for dealing with the situation if you are struggling to get any writing done when you tune into this episode of Indie Author Weekly... For today’s episode, I want to talk about that ever-present issue that we all face: struggling to get any writing done. I’ve addressed this topic here on the podcast before and I’m sure I’ll address it again from other angles many more times in the future, because honestly, this is one of the biggest problems that any author, whether you’re an aspiring author or an active author, faces. Writing can be such a wonderful experience, and sometimes it flows freely… and other times, it’s just a struggle. So today’s episode is a little pep talk on the subject. A lot about “sitting down and getting the writing done” is all in your head. We struggle with writing because we’re afraid of failure or success, we’re putting pressure on ourselves to get it perfect, we’re uncomfortable about being vulnerable and baring our soul, and so on. The good news about that is that when we reframe the writing process and retrain our brain, writing is less of a struggle! However… if your office isn’t conducive to your writing style, or if you don’t know anything about your characters, or if you have no idea how to put a story together, then it doesn’t matter how much you’re “in the writing zone”—you’re probably still going to experience some struggles with the process along the way. In other words... Writing is a mindset, but only after you have all the pieces in place. Writing a book is like parenting. We think we'll write a book, but really the book also writes us -- and changes us in fundamental ways. Amy and Katherine talk about how that happens. By her own (skewed) estimation, Katherine Quie has been writing her memoir for five billion years, but now here she stands, on the verge of launching Raising Will: Surviving the Brilliance and Blues of ADHD. At this milestone for her book (intimately tied to her parenting journey), Katherine and Amy reflect on all the ways she's progressed so far, and Katherine's hopes for this work going forward -- not just a book anymore, but a mission. What are some effective and practical ways to differentiate reading comprehension strategies for English learners? How does motivation, relationship building, and autonomy impact student growth? How might family engagement strategies like home visits help provide actionable insight leading to better reading comprehension and perhaps more importantly, a joy in reading? We discuss these topics and much more with Larry Ferlazzo. Larry teaches English, Social Studies and International Baccalaureate classes to English Language Learners and mainstream students at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California. He has written nine books, the latest of which is titled The ELL Teacher’s Toolbox (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski). He and Katie are presently, editing a series of practical classroom books for Social Studies, Science and Math teachers. They are also preparing a second edition of our The ESL/ELL Teacher’s Survival Guide. In addition, he is writing a fourth book on student motivation, Building Intrinsic Motivation in the Classroom: A Practical Guide. Larry has won several awards, including the Leadership For A Changing World Award from the Ford Foundation, and was the Grand Prize Winner of the International Reading Association Award for Technology and Reading. In the past, he has taught courses in the teacher credential program at California State University, Sacramento and the University of California – Davis. Larry also writes a popular education blog, a weekly teacher advice column for Education Week Teacher and semi-regular posts for The New York Times and The British Council. His articles on education policy appear in the Washington Post and in publications such as ASCD Educational Leadership, Social Policy, and Language Magazine. In addition, he hosts a weekly radio show on BAM! Education Radio. Larry was a community organizer for nineteen years prior to becoming a public school teacher - which is where we begin our conversation in this episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/highest-aspirations/message

We LOVE to read comments so please leave a comment and subscribe to Our channel: https://www.youtube.com/writerslifeorg Grab your free writer's toolkit by going to http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello its Peter here a game from writers life and today can you really be a part-time writer when it comes to writing we all hear those stories of famous writers you know the ones who are ate slept and breathed writing those who would guess over three am shaking with passion and a fierce unstoppable desire to write all their thoughts down those who couldn't think of anything other than writing who would spend their days holed up in their study perhaps a quirky just filled share the bottom of their garden and not see daylight or eat for days on end because their work was so consumed well that might be all well and good but for most of us the idea of being a full-time writer is a bit of a luxury we all know how hard it is to get published so how much time can we realistically spend on our writing while still making sure we have a roof over our heads also it's okay not to want writing to be the only thing you do with your life writers seem to carry immense amounts of guilt around with them they beat themselves up for not doing enough for not being good enough in fact often we are so down on ourselves and put so much pressure on ourselves it's a wonder we find any joy in writing at all sure being a good writer requires dedication and commitment and discipline there's no doubt about it but one can be a part-time writer and still progress still see targets and still achieve our writing dreams when did being a writer mean one has to be bleary-eyed neglects our friends and families and live on crusts of bread and water for weeks on end it's like we have to be ashamed if we are practically killing ourselves to achieve our writing goal there's a myth that unless we are waking up in the middle of the night and slowly becoming reclusive in order to write that we can't possibly be passionate enough about it or dedicated enough for it to be a success writers need to give themselves a break at the end of the day while it's important to work hard for what you want in life it's also important to enjoy the process so if writing part-time works for you and allows you to write at your leisure while also enjoy everything else that life has to offer that's fine in fact achieving a balance between your writing life and your actual life is healthy and something which should be encouraged we don't need to have a sob story we don't need to cripple ourselves and end up a stressed-out exhausted shell of a person to follow our dreams that's not to say that being a full time writer couldn't be brilliant but it needs to be because that's the right move not born out of some sort of guilt ridden weird idea that you're not a real writer unless you dedicate every inch of your being to it it's essential for writers to stop and ask ourselves is this working for me am i enjoying this writers don't have to be tortured sleep-deprived soars it's okay and possible to be a part-time writer and still be successful it's just that it may tell you a little longer to get there that's all and don't forget if you're struggling to write or finish your book our free writers tool can help with it you'll learn how to overcome procrastination get organized stay focused fine times are right and finally get your book published to get access now while it's still available simply go to http://www.writerslife.org/toolkit that's right as writerslife.org forward slash toolkit that's it for now be sure to give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel for more I'm Peter and I'll see you next time.
