A captive breeding program has helped set California Condors on the path to recovery. But when biologists reviewed the family tree for the breeding program, they found a big surprise. Two chicks had DNA that linked them perfectly to their mothers but didn't match a single male. They arose through parthenogenesis, developing from unfertilized eggs without sperm from a male. These condors are the first known case of parthenogenesis in a wild bird species where the females had access to fertile males.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? The San Jose Barracuda (25-16-2-3) never trailed on Saturday night at the Mechanics Arena Bank, but it would take a third-period goal from Andrew Poturalski to finally put the Condors (20-17-5-2) away, 4-3. With the win, the Barracuda snapped a five-game road losing skid and improved to 2-2-1-0 against the Oilers' affiliate this season.

Friday afternoon means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to lead you into the weekend. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed Jeff Skinner's spot in the lineup, Viktor Arvidsson's goal against the Blackhawks, Noah Philp being loaned to Bakersfield, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about Jeff Skinner's spot in the lineup and whether he's doing enough to keep himself in the top six. Given that the winger has played well over the last handful of games, will that be enough for Kris Knoblauch? Or will the Oilers' coach continue to mix up his lines in the hopes of finding the perfect fit? As you'll hear, everyone is cautiously optimistic about Skinner's game, but everyone is still a little gun-shy based on his usage so far this season.Changing gears, we looked at Viktor Arvidsson's big goal against the Chicago Blackhawks and whether that beautiful snipe gave us some excitement that could get his offence going. Given that the Oilers paid him a bunch of money to score goals, having only seven on the year is certainly concerning, but that also means there's more there than we're seeing. We also touched on the Oilers loaning Noah Philp back to the Condors ahead of the 4 Nations break and how it's important that he keeps playing instead of sitting around here in Edmonton. We then looked at some recent quotes from Stan Bowman regarding his plans for the trade deadline. As you'll hear, it sounds like the Oilers are seeking depth as opposed to a major acquisition, but there's also no way that he's going to tip his entire hand. When asked about the goaltending, Bowman gave his vote of confidence for his goaltending tandem after there's been a lot of noise about upgraded that position. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of the podcast with a random collection of topics, including some prop bets for Friday's Oilers game against the Avalanche, some Ask the Idiots questions from listeners, and Hot and Cold Performers to recap the best and worst moments from the past seven days. As always, the boys were all over the map with their answers, but that's the joy of opening up the end of the podcast for a little bit of shenanigans.

This week on NAFC, Zea's recording might be corrupted, but trust us—she was definitely here, adding her usual flair even through the glitches. Mox kicks things off by dissecting every wild action sequence in the latest season of Castlevania Nocturne, then sharply contrasts it with the massive letdown that was the new Legend of the Condor Heroes. And because he can't resist a trip down memory lane, he also drops some nostalgic thoughts on the indie classic Recettear. Meanwhile, Izzy, still hobbling around from his leg injury, is wading through his never-ending movie and game backlog. He's deep into Undying—so engrossing he can't seem to put it down—and he throws in his takes on Paddington and Smile 2. Gibbs, ever the oddball, shares his quirky viewing experience of Jeopardy, where one contestant's last name left him uncomfortably unsettled. And just when you thought things couldn't get any more offbeat, the crew jumps headfirst into a review of Nosferatu. Expect plenty of sharp insights, awkward pauses, and the kind of banter that only NAFC can deliver. Support us on Patreon!

Friday afternoon means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio has been recorded and edited and is ready to carry you through the weekend. This week, we discussed Wednesday's loss to the Golden Knights, Evan Bouchard's rough start, Connor McDavid's early return to the lineup, and much more.We started the Friday episode of the podcast by discussing the Oilers' defensive pairings and whether it's time to change things up. Seeing as the Oilers had some very real struggles against the Golden Knights on Wednesday, it's fair to wonder if Knoblauch should try a different look or two with his defensive units.Changing gears, we looked at the new line combos the Oilers iced at practice. Mattias Janmark is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, which means there could be a path for a player like Noah Philp to rejoin the big club after spending the week with the Condors. We also touched on Matthew Savoie blocking a shot down in Calgary and how the fear of him being out has seemingly been squashed since he ended up in the lineup the next night. Finally, we wrapped the podcast up by answering your questions with another round of Ask the Idiots that covered some Oilers talk and some nonsense mixed in there as well. From there, the fellas dove into Hot and Cold Performers to recap everything that's happened over the last seven days. Needless to say, this week's episode had plenty of hockey talk mixed with a little bit of nonsense.
Last night's game against the New Jersey Devils was a tough one for the Edmonton Oilers, which meant an irritated cast on the Tuesday episode of Oilersnation Radio. On today's podcast, we looked at Connor McDavid's recovery, Monday's shutout loss to the Devils, a minor-league trade, and more.We started the Tuesday podcast with a delicious debate about the letter grade everyone would give the Oilers after three games without Connor McDavid in the lineup. With a 2-1-0 record without their captain, the fellas gave their notes on what's been happening over the last three games and why they assigned the grades they did. Changing gears, the conversation turned toward the Oilers' special teams and how they're losing games because of areas where they've been solid historically. Put another way, if ever you were going to make a list of the issues the Oilers might have during the 2024-25 season, there's no way anyone would have included the power play. Getting into the news from the week, we started with a discussion about when Connor McDavid will return to the lineup after being cryptic about whether or not he'll be available for Saturday's game in Vancouver. Is McDavid coming back the reason that the team loaned Drake Caggiula to the Condors? If McDavid does come back for Saturday's game, does that mean Derek Ryan might hit the waiver wire? Finally, we wrapped up the Tuesday episode of ONR by looking ahead to tomorrow's matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights. One of the weirder things about Vegas' season is that they're currently undefeated at home but have yet to win on the road. It's one of the stranger stats you will ever hear, but the goal of the podcast is not just to entertain but also to teach the audience a few things from time to time.
To finish off SpooOoktober, we're looking at huge birds that devour the ickiest stuff around: the giant, majestic and critically endangered California condor. Condorologist Dr. Jonathan C. Hall's work helps monitor populations, tracks flight data, and keeps tabs on how well this small population is rebounding after going extinct in the wild in 1987. There's nothing better than a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio to guide you through the final hours of the work week with an hour of Oilers talk. The guys kicked off this week's episode of ONR with a delicious debate about whether or not Noah Philp will be on the Oilers' opening night roster. With Derek Ryan listed as day-to-day, the door is open for Philp to slide into that 4C spot, but is that the right decision for night one? There's also an argument to be made about sending Philp to the Condors and letting him play big minutes in the AHL.Changing gears, we looked at the price of Oilers jerseys after a user on Reddit noted that you can buy a new jersey and spend an additional $10 to get their sponsor patch on the front. While the guys were talking about jersey prices, Tyler interrupted the conversation by chatting about a new post on Connor McDavid's Instagram account that implies he will be doing some kind of food play.Next up, the guys spent a few minutes looking at the Jeremy Swayman contract situation in Boston and wondered how/if that will impact future negotiations with Stuart Skinner here in Edmonton. Seeing as Swayman and Skinner are basically the same age, wouldn't a massive contract for the former in Boston lead to one for Stu here in Edmonton? Finally, we wrapped the podcast up by answering your questions with another round of Ask the Idiots before diving into Hot and Cold Performers to recap everything that's happened over the last seven days. With the pre-season kickoff just around the corner, the boys had plenty to talk about this week for the first time in forever. Needless to say, this week's episode probably had the most hockey talk that we've had in a while, and it feels good to know that the NHL is almost back for another season.Website: https://oilersnation.com/https://twitter.com/ONradiopodcasthttps://www.youtube.com/@Oilersnationdotcom/ https://www.facebook.com/OilersNation/https://www.instagram.com/onradiopodcast/https://www.tiktok.com/@oilersnationSHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!Powered by @bet365. I've been looking forward to today's episode for a really long time - and for two great reasons. One, it's about wildlife forensics, which is an immense field that requires knowledge of everything from wildlife behavior and morphology, to DNA, to crime scene investigation, to policy and the law. I've always been a bit of a generalist who likes to deep dive into topics on occasion…so this is a field true to my heart. And the second reason I've been looking forward to it is the guest - forensic wildlife biologist Ashley Bray. As you'll hear, Ashley - in addition to being a forensic wildlife biologist - is also a podcaster. And her podcast is a slant on human/wildlife conflict - with - as you might expect from a forensic biologist - with a true crime twist. Oh - it's called Get Out Alive - be sure to check it out.Today we take a broad look at what forensic wildlife biology entails, and the surprising connections it reveals, such as the connection between wildlife crimes and drug and human trafficking - and organized crime in general.Ashley has a few nice case examples that we review. And hold tight - you're going to learn about a super cute animal called a vaquita. So, get ready for a wide ranging discussion with forensic wildlife biologist Ashley Bray. Have you ever wondered what it takes to bring a species back from the brink of extinction? Today, we're diving into the front lines of one of the most challenging and inspiring conservation efforts of our time, with Sophie Osborn as our guide. This episode unravels the incredible stories of the Peregrine Falcon, Hawaiian Crow, and California Condor—three iconic birds with a common thread of survival against the odds. We'll explore the daunting threats these birds have faced, and surprisingly, how those same dangers continue to impact us all. Take lead ammunition, for instance—it's a well-known hazard to wildlife like the Condor. But did you know that the tiny fragments left behind in game can be ingested by people, leading to serious health risks? You'll find a striking X-ray image in our show notes that drives this point home. But this isn't just a tale of challenges—it's also a story of hope. Sophie shares the hard-won successes and the relentless dedication of biologists who are making a difference. Sophie discussed all of this and much more in her new book, ‘Feather Trails'. It's a beautifully crafted narrative that blends humor and suspense, along with Sophie's personal journey alongside these remarkable species.
