This week on Birds of a Feather Talk Together, we're revisiting one of our favorite episodes about the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher—one of North America's smallest, busiest, and most beloved songbirds. While John is off birding in New Zealand and Australia, we're taking a look back at this conversation about a bird that perfectly captures what makes birdwatching so rewarding. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers may be tiny, but their energetic behavior, buzzy calls, and constant movement make them unforgettable once you start noticing them. When we originally recorded this episode, we talked about how special it would be to spend a day surrounded by Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and how important it is not to take those moments in nature for granted. Recently, that exact experience happened again, serving as a reminder of one of the best lessons birding can teach us: slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the birds around you.In this episode, Field Museum ornithologists and curators of birds John Bates and Shannon Hackett join RJ and Amanda Pole to discuss Blue-gray Gnatcatcher behavior, bird identification, migration, habitat, nesting, bird songs and calls, and why these tiny birds are such favorites among birders. We also answer a listener mailbag question about vultures and condors, exploring the fascinating world of scavenging birds and their important role in ecosystems. If you love birding, birdwatching, songbirds, backyard birds, bird behavior, bird identification, vultures, condors, ornithology, wildlife science, and fascinating bird facts, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Here are links to our social and YouTube pages, give us a follow:YouTube InstagramTikTokBlueSky
Send us Fan Mail"At intervals the condor passed, huge as an ocean liner.” Henry Miller in Big Sur and the OrangesBesides marveling at the exceptional beauty and almost mysterious power of these amazing birds Joe Burnett and I discuss work in Big Sur and Monterey. We talk about the rebuilding of the Ventana Wildlife Sanctuary after the 2020 Dolan Fire, how the sanctuary supports releasing, feeding, monitoring and recapturing condors to test for lead poisoning—the leading mortality threat—using radio and GPS transmitters to track a flock of 113 birds, including wild-born untagged chicks. VWS outreach now centers on getting ranchers and hunters to switch to non-lead ammunition, which the program helps by providing free ammo, though non-lead .22 availability is a major hurdle. Joe describes vaccinating about 90% of the population against highly pathogenic avian influenza, ongoing disease and blood-lead testing, wildfire impacts, public engagement while tracking birds, and resources and documentaries available through the organization's website. Thanks for listening!Magnus Ventana Wildlife SocietyThe beautiful documentary Condor CanyonSupport the show_________________________________________________This podcast is a production of the Henry Miller Memorial Library with support from The Arts Council for Monterey County! We recently returned to Pinnacles National Park, a place we hadn't visited since our first trip in 2013. Situated about 75 minutes south of Monterey, California, Pinnacles is known for its dramatic volcanic rock formations, remnants of a once 8,000-foot volcano. When we first visited, Pinnacles had just become a national park, and we stopped there as part of our journey to visit all the U.S. national parks. This time, we had a different reason to return. Karen wanted to explore one of the park's talus caves. In this episode, we discuss our visit to the park, where we hiked into the lower portion of Bear Gulch Cave, then to Bear Gulch Reservoir, and finally into the high peaks. We also dive into the park's fascinating geology, its history as a national monument established by Theodore Roosevelt, and the role of the Civilian Conservation Corps in building many of the trails and structures still used today. And of course, no visit to Pinnacles would be complete without talking about California condors. Pinnacles is the only national park that actively manages a condor release site, and we explain how these remarkable birds were brought back from the brink of extinction. If you're planning a visit to Pinnacles, this episode is for you, as we also share practical tips to help you make the most of your time in the park. ----- Follow this link to join us on Patreon. This week, Eastern Condors takes us back into familiar territory with an artist we never tire of revisiting: Sammo Hung. After covering Mr. Nice Guy and Encounters of the Spooky Kind earlier in 2025, we arrive at our fourth Sammo film on the show—but this time the laughs are traded for gunfire, jungle sweat, and brutal combat. A stark departure from kung fu comedy and supernatural hijinks, Eastern Condors finds the magnetic Hong Kong giant tackling a grim war-action epic, showcasing yet another facet of his remarkable versatility as both performer and filmmaker. Dirty, dangerous, and unrelentingly physical, this is Sammo operating in full men-on-a-mission mode. Joining us for the discussion is again Nick Langdon, helping us break down the film's intensity, themes, and place within Sammo's ever-expanding legacy. Is this the last time Sammo Hung marches onto the show? Not a chance. And stick around—next episode, we're ringing in the season with A Christmas Carol starring George C Scott. Thanks, as always, for listening—and locking in.
The Andean Condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world. With a wingspan that can stretch over 10 feet across, the condor doesn't flap so much as sail, using rising thermals to glide across the Andes for hours. Once revered in Inca mythology as a messenger of the gods, the Andean Condor now graces the coat of arms of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador. But like many scavengers, condor populations are declining due to threats like lead poisoning and habitat loss.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? The Sharks and Barracuda both went winless this week. The Sharks would get thumped by the Hurricanes and the Mammoth while being unable to solve Tristan Jarry. The Barracuda's offense also went silent against a Condors team that they had scored 7 goals on just one week ago. Other Topics include: The Sharks make some roster moves, including players going to the IR, a waiver claim, and a minor league trade. Videoboard message has people some upset, while others say "that's not what it meant", behind a shit-eating grin. Everyone wants to sacrifice some children in order to get a Sharks win. And more!

This week we are taking a look at a Hong Kong action classic- Eastern Condors! Directed by and starring the legendary Sammo Hung, this wartime, martial arts thriller is one of the most unique and technically well executed entries in Hung's extensive filmography. With some phenomenal cinematography, an overall visually stunning aesthetic, and absolutely mind-blowing martial arts sequences, this film has a little bit of something for everyone. Listen in as we break down why you should watch this film, what we love so much about it, and surprisingly enough… what we DON'T like about it! A captive breeding program has helped set California Condors on the path to recovery. But when biologists reviewed the family tree for the breeding program, they found a big surprise. Two chicks had DNA that linked them perfectly to their mothers but didn't match a single male. They arose through parthenogenesis, developing from unfertilized eggs without sperm from a male. These condors are the first known case of parthenogenesis in a wild bird species where the females had access to fertile males.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? With the win, the Barracuda snapped a five-game road losing skid and improved to 2-2-1-0 against the Oilers' affiliate this season.

Friday afternoon means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to lead you into the weekend. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed Jeff Skinner's spot in the lineup, Viktor Arvidsson's goal against the Blackhawks, Noah Philp being loaned to Bakersfield, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about Jeff Skinner's spot in the lineup and whether he's doing enough to keep himself in the top six. Given that the winger has played well over the last handful of games, will that be enough for Kris Knoblauch? Or will the Oilers' coach continue to mix up his lines in the hopes of finding the perfect fit? As you'll hear, everyone is cautiously optimistic about Skinner's game, but everyone is still a little gun-shy based on his usage so far this season.Changing gears, we looked at Viktor Arvidsson's big goal against the Chicago Blackhawks and whether that beautiful snipe gave us some excitement that could get his offence going. Given that the Oilers paid him a bunch of money to score goals, having only seven on the year is certainly concerning, but that also means there's more there than we're seeing. We also touched on the Oilers loaning Noah Philp back to the Condors ahead of the 4 Nations break and how it's important that he keeps playing instead of sitting around here in Edmonton. We then looked at some recent quotes from Stan Bowman regarding his plans for the trade deadline. As you'll hear, it sounds like the Oilers are seeking depth as opposed to a major acquisition, but there's also no way that he's going to tip his entire hand. When asked about the goaltending, Bowman gave his vote of confidence for his goaltending tandem after there's been a lot of noise about upgraded that position. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of the podcast with a random collection of topics, including some prop bets for Friday's Oilers game against the Avalanche, some Ask the Idiots questions from listeners, and Hot and Cold Performers to recap the best and worst moments from the past seven days. As always, the boys were all over the map with their answers, but that's the joy of opening up the end of the podcast for a little bit of shenanigans.

Friday afternoon means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio has been recorded and edited and is ready to carry you through the weekend. This week, we discussed Wednesday's loss to the Golden Knights, Evan Bouchard's rough start, Connor McDavid's early return to the lineup, and much more.We started the Friday episode of the podcast by discussing the Oilers' defensive pairings and whether it's time to change things up. Seeing as the Oilers had some very real struggles against the Golden Knights on Wednesday, it's fair to wonder if Knoblauch should try a different look or two with his defensive units.Changing gears, we looked at the new line combos the Oilers iced at practice. Mattias Janmark is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, which means there could be a path for a player like Noah Philp to rejoin the big club after spending the week with the Condors. We also touched on Matthew Savoie blocking a shot down in Calgary and how the fear of him being out has seemingly been squashed since he ended up in the lineup the next night. Finally, we wrapped the podcast up by answering your questions with another round of Ask the Idiots that covered some Oilers talk and some nonsense mixed in there as well. From there, the fellas dove into Hot and Cold Performers to recap everything that's happened over the last seven days. Needless to say, this week's episode had plenty of hockey talk mixed with a little bit of nonsense.
