The Unpopular Opinions strand is all about ranting - and today we look at the travesty that is books written in the 'Business Parable' style. These simplified narratives, lack depth + nuance, ultimately failing to engage readers. They often feel contrived + preachy, and we discussed the importance of real-world applicability in business literature.  But in the third part of the show, Sean reveals a dark parable secret he's been keeping. Join us for a discussion about how to use storytelling in your business and career. Sean Platt is Founder of Sterling & Stone and Co-Founder Invisible Ink Media. One of my favorite parts of this interview was the framework he teaches to small business owners so that they can sell their services. Reflecting on storytelling and narrative Sean shares his background as a writer, noting how his wife encouraged him to start writing and how he discovered the power of storytelling. He discusses the importance of narratives, how they shape our experiences, and how being intentional about the stories we tell ourselves and others can lead to better outcomes. Applying storytelling to business and leadership We explore how effective storytelling can be leveraged in business and leadership contexts. They discuss the importance of crafting compelling narratives that resonate with and empower your audience, rather than making yourself the hero. They also touch on the dangers of performative vulnerability or shallow stories. Niching down in business to capture attention When you niche down in your business you are able to capture people's attention. If you write emails and copy on your site that is geared toward everyone you don't gather anyone's attention. In this interview he talks about his story telling framework that helps you create content for your niche audience. Systematizing storytelling and capturing insights Sean emphasizes the value of being intentional about collecting and cataloging the stories that arise in one's business and life. He suggests regularly reflecting on the "best stories" from a given week or period as a way to build up a robust narrative toolkit that can be applied to various situations. This week Trudi Jaye talks to Indie publishing personalities Johnny B. Truant and Sean Platt from the Story Studio Podcast (previously the Self Publishing Podcast) about their experiences in self publishing in the last few years, from the early days when they didn't know as much about writing or marketing their books to their experiences with non fiction and creating the Smarter Artist community of authors.   They also talk about why we should call ourselves simply publishers instead of self publishers (ie our aim should be to be indistinguishable from traditionally published books), how to find people to help you achieve your publishing dreams (instead of trying to do it all yourself), and why readers are the most important part of an author's career (of course!). It's a fun episode with loads of takeaways that you'll be able to use in your own writing journey.

Ep#40: Self-Publishing Advice Podcast: Indie Author Fringe Highlight with Sean Platt and Johnny B Truant of Sterling & Stone believe the key to writing better is to write faster. Here they talk about their creative process, how planning helps authors to write a better story in less time, even if they're "pantsers", and their new story-planning app. A lot of indie publishing is frontier thinking. Sean and Johnny have been figuring the best way to approach their writing process, and in this podcast they share some lessons and techniques they’ve learned along the way. Here are three elements from this podcast that really resonated with me: Understanding your genre foundations. Know your characters. The importance of cover design for your readers, and you. Want to know why some books sell more than others? This information is out there and accessible to anyone who wants to take the time to understand their genre better. At the end of the day, if you want to sell more books, you have to write books that appeal to the genre’s core audience. When Johnny and Sean first started writing together it was as simple Sean coming out with a very simple outline and then Johnny turning it into a book. Along the way, David Wright joined the writing team, and they developed a systematic way of writing together that allows them to establish core relationships with the characters. At the end of this process, there’s enough information for each of the writing team to be able to picture the locations and know the characters. They have a connection with all of them, and this is one of the elements that allow them to write their stories faster. The Cover Design topic never gets old! But what was interesting was hearing about Sean and Johnny’s writing process. For Book 1 in the Invasion series, they commissioned the book cover before they started writing, and it provided some creative inspiration for their story details. During their cover design discussion, Johnny and Sean also discussed the importance of genre conventions in the cover process. Yes we all want our book to stand out in our genre, but if you design against the established conventions, especially in the major genres, you may end up getting passed over rather than stand out.  Our weekly Self-Publishing Advicebroadcast is brought to you by ALLi, the Alliance of Independent Authors. Sean Platt is a pioneer and innovator in the business of fiction. He has a proven track record of doing what's never been done before, and with great success. He ran the second most successful fiction project in KickStarter history, and proved that fast writing can be good writing when he and his partner wrote a book in 30 days, live in front of 1,000 people. That's just part of it. Today, Sean talks about what's to come, both for him and for the fiction industry at large. Key Points At 5:03 - Even though they had great success with serials, Sean talks about why they've stepped away from them, and why other authors should look for another strategy. At 6:40 - Sean talks about one of his reimaginations that earns them the name 'hack writers,' but explains why that's not the case at all. At 14:00 - Sean talks about the concept of Open Source Fiction as yet another reimagination in fiction. At 16:10 - Subscriptions are becoming more common, and Sean has found a way to integrate it into his publishing company, but do it in a way that provides enormous value to his readers. At 19:20 - Sean's final reimagination that includes world class narration, and a new model that could be very disruptive to the publishing industry. Enjoying the podcast? Help us spread the word! Kobo Writing Life Director Mark Lefebvre interviews Johnny B. Johnny's evolution as a writer – specifically, how Johnny's first novel, The Bialy Pimps, described as “Clerks” in a bagel shop, took him twelve years to publish it; compared to the incredible weekly word count he is currently producing (ie, 270,000 words for the Fat Vampire series in a single year)  Giving oneself permission to simply write fast  Johnny's first collaborative novel project (along with Sean Platt) entitled Unicorn Western, and the hilarious origin story of how the series stemmed from a research argument on the Self-Publishing Podcast that led Dave to crack a joke about unicorns appearing in a western. The Beam, an intellectual science-fiction series that Johnny is co-writing with Sean Platt How outlining, or creating “beats” for a story helped Johnny to write fast Johnny's continuing experiments with his writing, including the layout and placement of the tools, such as keyboard, monitor, etc Eminem as Johnny's “go-to” musical artist to listen to while he is writing  Johnny's evolving philosophy on pricing strategies and funnels for writers, including making the first book in various series free The call to action including choice of links to the other books and bundles in a book published as part of a series. How the product image for The Beam books one through six is a three dimensional image conveys something one might normally only see when holding or looking at a physical boo How there is no instant fix or easy solution, but that being successful requires thinking long term, being patient and involves a lot of hard work The satisfaction of helping other writers that Johnny receives from producing the Self-Publishing Podcast For this episode's side-bar note, Mark speaks about social media strategies, including how it's not about “broadcasting” a message (such as “please buy my book”) but, rather, engaging with and participating and adding to a community (with a reference to Episode 004 with Mitch Joel) OTHER LINKS/RESOURCES Johnny's books on Kobo The Self Publishing Podcast Episode 003 of KWL Podcast (with Johnny's podcast pals Sean Platt and David Wright)
