There's a geography of limitation that exists not on any map, but in the quiet territories of our own making. Stories that whisper: this is as far as you'll go. Today, we are talking with Mary Marantz - a woman who understands that our beginnings are not our boundaries. Growing up in a single-wide trailer on the tippy top of Fenwick Mountain, she learned something profound: that grace isn't about erasing your history, but making peace with it. Imagine a young girl watching the world from that precipice, learning that survival isn't just about enduring, but reimagining. Mary's journey from that trailer to Yale Law School isn't a bootstrapping narrative of triumph, but a meditation on grace, on the way unexpected paths unfold when we listen carefully to the whispers of our own potential. How do we create space between who we were told we could be and who we are actually called to become? How do we recognize that the most revolutionary act might be showing up, day after day, for the work that won't let go of us? Mary writes about fear like an old friend - not something to vanquish, but to understand. She knows that the stories we tell ourselves are powerful, that they can either keep us small or become the very ground from which we grow. So join us as we walk through those stories together - not as a roadmap, but as an invitation. Here's my conversation with Mary Marantz.Mary Marantz is the bestselling author of Dirt and Underestimated, as well as the host of the popular podcast The Mary Marantz Show. She grew up in a trailer in rural West Virginia and was the first in her family to go to college before going on to Yale for law school. Her work has been featured on CNN, MSN, Business Insider, Bustle, Thrive Global, Southern Living, Hallmark Home & Family and more. She and her husband Justin live in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut, with their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed and Atticus. Are you looking to elevate your authority, grow your business, and foster deep, profitable relationships through your podcast? In this episode of Podcast Talent Coach, I dive deep into the undeniable power of becoming a published author, and how your podcast is the perfect springboard to make it happen. BENEFITS OF BEING PUBLISHED A book isn't just a collection of words; it's the foundation of authority, visibility, and influence in your niche. Whether you've been podcasting for a year or have hundreds of episodes under your belt, you already have a treasure trove of content that can be repurposed into a high-impact book. I'll walk you through why having your name on a cover instantly elevates your credibility, opens new doors for speaking gigs, and sets you apart in your field. Let's face it... everyone wants to stand out, but not everyone knows how to do it strategically. In my conversation with book coach and editor Susan Crossman, we break down how you can curate your podcast episodes into a well-structured book. PUBLISHED WITH SUSAN CROSSMAN Susan Crossman is a book coach and editor who helps mission-focused coaches, consultants, and innovators write and publish compelling books that make a difference in their businesses and their world. She believes a well-written book can be a powerful force for good in our world and she takes delight in assisting her clients to greater author-ity. Susan's journey is as inspiring as her expertise. From her childhood dream of writing while perched in an apple tree to overcoming loss and transforming her own story into five published books, she shares actionable insights every aspiring author needs. We also tackle the big question: should you self-publish or pursue a traditional publisher? Susan cuts through the confusion, helping you decide what aligns best with your business goals and personal aspirations. Don't fall into the trap of thinking "if you write it, they will come." As we explore in this episode, writing a book is only 20% of the journey. The real impact comes when you masterfully market and leverage your book as part of your broader content strategy. Susan and I share real-world examples, from business leaders like Tony Robbins to rising entrepreneurs who found their true calling and built movements after publishing their first book. And yes, we get honest about the pitfalls of poor quality, AI-generated books and why investing in professional editing, structure, and heartfelt writing delivers results your audience will respect. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES The benefits of being a published author extend far beyond the book itself. We delve into the speaking opportunities, media exposure, and industry recognition that come with being a published author. Susan recounts how one of her clients, an accountant-turned-author, became a sought-after speaker and leader in her field - all by articulating her value and experience in a quality book. We also talk candidly about best-seller myths, the importance of audiobook versions, and how to avoid the embarrassment of a rushed, unpolished book. If you want your message to stick and your book to stand the test of time, this episode gives you a clear blueprint. GET PUBLISHED Ready to get started? Susan is hosting a powerful three-day event, "Write With Impact," specifically for coaches, consultants, and change-makers who want to create books that make a difference. #865 Do you have a stream of ideas you've never put into practice? Are you stuck consuming information and accumulating knowledge without ever taking action? That's where most of us are these days. Learning has become a substitute for doing. Because it feels productive, we mistake gathering hacks and strategies for actual creation and work. That's why I wrote my upcoming book, Lean Learning. With my kids heading toward adulthood, I don't want them or anyone else falling into this trap. I want you to invest in just enough quality instruction, take action, reflect, and repeat. I want us all to escape the kind of growth that lives in our heads but dies in our hands! Your way out is the just-in-time information that finds you right when you need it. This is your key to progress and success without distractions! Please help me spread this message by pre-ordering Lean Learning, and listen in on this episode to achieve more by learning less! Send us a textBirthday reflections hit differently when you're staring down 36 years of life experiences, complete with all the messy, beautiful, and sometimes downright painful moments that shape who we become. My journey has been anything but straightforward. I've navigated divorce, blended family dynamics, pregnancy loss, and the death of my daughter's father—all while battling anxiety, CPTSD, and coming to terms with being neurodivergent. The constant struggle between wanting acceptance and needing to be authentically myself has finally reached a tipping point where I'm choosing the latter, even when it's uncomfortable.Through the chaos, I've somehow managed to create a podcast, meet fascinating people from Olympians to professional fighters, write a book, buy a camper, and raise amazing children. These achievements didn't happen because life was perfect—they happened despite life being imperfect. That's what I want you to take away from this episode: you're still here, still fighting, still creating, and that alone makes you a warrior. As I enter this new year of life, I'm setting my sights on performing stand-up comedy, finishing my memoir, recording music, and traveling in our camper while homeschooling the kids. It's a tall order, but if there's anything these 36 years have taught me, it's that life is just a set of experiences—and I'm determined to make each one count.Join me in this raw, unfiltered birthday reflection where I peel back the layers of social media perfection to show you the real, sometimes struggling, but always determined person behind the microphone.
