60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: Do You Write What You Know or What You Know About?

Hello to you listening in Brockville, Ontario, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.Question: What is the difference between knowing something and knowing about something? The distinction is important because people often write what they know about based on what social media tells us whether that's politics, sports, entertainment, social justice, and so on. Social media also tells us how come what we know about is important to us. As a result what we know about often doesn't matter that much. The disconnect shows up in our writing, as if maybe AI generated it.What we know comes from lived experience. What we know is a clue to what matters to us. For example, I might know about the grinding defeat of poverty; but I know from lived experience the defeat of betrayal. When we write a heartfelt story about something that we know we are pulling on imagination, sensations, memories, feelings, and emotions. Those universal story elements are shared by every other human being. When we write from that place of knowing we more easily connect with, engage and inspire our readers and listeners to action.CTA: Curious to learn more? 334: The Writing Tip Every Kid Needs (that I Learned in Bulgaria)

The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast | Education

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2024 4:08

The late afternoon sun filtered through the windows of our tiny department office as I ran in to grab the papers I'd just printed. As I waited for them to finish, I examined the old books stacked on the shelf above the printer, brought to our school in  Bulgaria by another ex-pat teacher many years ago, judging by the dust. One caught my eye - William Zinsser's guide to writing nonfiction - On Writing Well. I snagged it with my papers and headed upstairs. Little did I know, I had just picked up my new favorite writing book, and the one that would give me my most consistent improvement for my own writing. It's the switch that made me start this podcast with “The late afternoon sun filtered through the windows” instead of “It was late one afternoon.” Did you spot it?  Welcome to the Thursday edition of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast, a podcast for English teachers in search of creative teaching strategies. Today we're talking about a simple but highly impactful piece of writing advice you can give to every student. I heard it first from William Z all those years ago, and now I want to share it with you. OK, here's the simple rule. Students need to watch out for the verb “To be.” Sure, it's useful. I just used it. But it's actually too useful. It can quickly become the driver of any piece of writing with constant lines like: “He was bored,” “they were hungry, “she was late,” “we're tired.”  When we see writing like this, we might be tempted to launch into a fairly complex explanation of show don't tell. But it's even easier to give students a highlighter and ask them to find all the “to be” verbs in their piece. Have them highlight “was,” were,” and “are,” then pause to take in the fact that their whole piece is now bright yellow. Then show them how to flip the switch. Let's take “he was bored” as our model. How can a kid write “he was bored” without the “to be” construction?  How about this: “After six hours of waiting at the airport gate, Ben had finally mastered the art of sleeping standing up.”  Or we can try “They were hungry,” switching in “Jen and Jenny felt sure they could eat a dozen of the salted caramel cream donuts immediately. Each.”  As you can see, in general the switch away from “to be” leads to far more specific descriptive writing. It's like a game, shifting writing from black and white to full color.  Will there still be times when “to be” makes sense? For sure. You don't want kids to change it every single time. But making them aware of the potential can make a huge impact on their writing. I know it has on mine over years of writing for you!  If you're looking for a way to help students remember this tip, try spending fifteen minutes on a poster project. Invite every student to create a poster featuring a boring “TO BE” sentence in black and white, with the “To be” verb construction in red. Then have them make a second poster for a new version of the sentence with more vivid description matched by more vivid, colorful imagery. Put the best ones up on your wall as a reminder of this tip, then refer back to your models when students are editing their writing.  Such a simple rule, but it makes such a big impact. Remind your students that “to be” can BE boring, and you'll help them level up their writing game across genres.    Go Further:  Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation

Brainstorming . . . Even the word sounds a little creepy. Like there is a storm inside your brain. It sounds... It sounds sort of violent and hazardous and windy. In this podcast, we talk about the storms inside our brain and how those storms can become story ideas. Five Ways To Get Story Ideas Some authors have a really hard time just getting an idea for a new story. They burn out. They can't find anything that they think is 'good enough.' They just don't know where to start and that lack of a start makes them blocked. This is so sad! There are ways to fight it. One Way To Storm is BY Admiring Other's Work Think about ways that other people's stories influence you. If you're an Outlander fan, think about why. If you were to write your own kind of time travel story would it be like that? With a lot of spanking and stuff? Or something totally different. How would it be different? Another Way to Incite a Hailstorm of Questions Ask your self questions. It's all about 'What if?' What if Trump wasn't president in 2018? What if everyone had blue hair? What if the earth had two moons? What if dogs were really space aliens? Pogie the Dog: Wait. You mean they aren't? Carrie the Human: No, buddy... I mean... I don't think so? Third Way Where the Wind Is So Strong It Pushes Images into you Some of my best ideas have come on a treadmill watching the country music network or MTV or some random YouTube channel with the sound off and just seeing images. Eventually, an image will hit me so hard that I have to write a story about it. The happened with my story, Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape). Fourth Way Of Icy Understanding Figuring things out. This is sort of like Another Way, but instead of deliberately asking yourself off-the-wall questions, ask questions about things that matter to you. A lot of my stories are because I don't understand something. Tips on Having a Gay (Ex) Boyfriend was because I couldn't understand a hate crime that had happened. I mean, you can never understand that kind of hate, but this one incident was so bizarre that the only way I could deal with it was to write my way through it. Fifth Way—An Emotional Blizzard Get emotional. What is it that always makes you laugh, cry with joy, weep with anger? What are the situations that pull at your heartstrings? Think about that as story. Write. Dog Tip for Life Inspiration is just attention. Notice what's around you. Then ideas will come. Writing Tip of the Pod Once you have your seed of information and your brain has successfully stormed, don't second guess your idea. Write it down. If you are a plot-first writer, think up the questions to flesh out your idea - who is the protagonist. What is she up against? What's her goal? How is she going to get it? Write it down. Do it. Don't block yourself. RANDOM THOUGHT LINKS APA article NPR SHOUT OUT! The music we've clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License.
