How you spend your “down-time” matters to your well-being and creativity. Do we still partake in activities because we simply enjoy it? I have been fascinated by the growing allure of hobbies during quarantine - the “gentle pursuit of modest competence”. What happened to trying activities that are not directly related to your career? In this short episode, Alex talks about his podcast (Time for Your Hobby) and the why it’s important to have hobbies that you enjoy. In this episode, you will learn: The importance of picking up a hobby for your mental health & well-being. Why it feels like you’re listening to a broken record with the rhetoric: “just get started” on what you want to build or create What is the best part of podcasting? Alex has always enjoyed activities and projects that have an audio component to them. Alex started his journey as a rapper. Creating lyrics that uplifted people on their own personal path. And as he got older, he decided to play around with music production programs. Alex focused on building skills and created his musical melodies from scratch, in the genres of classical, hip hop, R&B, and Lo-Fi. And as much as he you enjoyed music, he wanted to explore other avenues of creativity that other people could enjoy. As you will (or have already) notice, Alex has the PERFECT radio host voice. His peers encouraged him to get into radio and as much as I liked the idea, he didn't just want to be on the radio just because he has a deep voice. Alex wanted to make something productive valuable. He had the equipment from his music production days and just went for it. Now, he has an amazing podcast called Time For Your Hobby. He has interviewed over 100 people on his show from across the world, which you can check out here. When I was working full time in a 9-5 day job, I was conflicted. I both enjoyed my job and was grateful for it, but I still wasn't entirely fulfilled. And only when I heard Liz Gilbert describe the distinction between your job, your hobbies, your career and your vocation, did I realise that was ok. So in this podcast episode - I'm going to give you permission to not love your job, and even go so far as to say that it's okay to hate it because it's just a job. It's not your vocation, it's not your career, it might even be your hobby, it might just be a job. And that is completely fine. Listen to find out more about the difference between your job, your hobby, your career and vocation and hear the three questions you should be asking yourself if you're not entirely fulfilled by your current job. This Where Are They Know? episode is kind of a crossover, if you will, because we originally talked to this guest on the Smart Passive Income Podcast. In Episode 311, “How to Build an Audience with Your Hobby,” we talked to Phil Lichtenberger from Scanner School. For this episode of AskPat, we explore finding more time in your business to level up success. If you enjoyed today's episode and you love the format of this show and helping other entrepreneurs, can you help me convince others to listen too? In this week's episode, we explore my newest hobby, ham radio. Featuring interviews with ham operators, a prepper, and a podcaster fascinated by hobbies (not me), we will dive in the deep end to discover what ham radio is all about. It may seem like an outdated technology from a bygone era, and like stamp collecting or knitting sweaters, is a pastime that really serves no purpose today beyond some mental stimulation. While this couldn't be further from the truth, we will investigate these topics in depth. This week we've got a special crossover episode, starring Alex of Time For Your Hobby, which is a podcast about peculiar hobbies and pastimes. Much like our own show, What Makes You Happy?, Alex finds friends, neighbors and acquaintances with unusual hobbies and asks them about the specifics of their chosen pursuit. Today he's with us to talk about his own chosen hobby, podcasts themselves. In this rather meta episode of What Makes You Happy?, prepare to learn a little bit about the world of podcasting.
