The Nats four game win streak was snapped in Sunday afternoon's 3-1 loss in Arizona.  Mark (From Phoenix) & Al open with DBacks Ace Corbin Burnes leaving the game in the top of the 5th due to a potential elbow injury.  Burnes will have a MRI on Monday just a few minths after signing a 6-year/ $210M deal.(07:30) James Wood was hitless, but both team doubles came from the new guys in Robert Hassell III & Daylen Lile.  Nathaniel Lowe's RBI single in the 5th was the only source of offense.(09:30) Mitchell Parker struggled yet again the bottom of the 1st and all three Arizona runs came in that frame.  Should the team experiment going with an Opener in future Parker starts to try and right the ship? Parker's ERA in the 1st inning is astonishingly over 10.50 this season and roughly 3.50 in all other innings.  (19:45) The three relievers used combined for three scoreless frames. Eduardo Salazar escaped a jam in the bottom of the 6th his first appearance since he replaced Jorge Lopez on the roster.(22:00) The Cubs come to D.C. on Tuesday and are tied for the best record in the NL.  The hosts note that Chicago is far ahead of Washington despite the two franchises beginning their rebuilds at the exact same time in the summer of 2021.(25:05) If the Nats are in the Wild Card hunt ahead of the Trade Deadline, will they be buyers? The Washington Nationals wrapped up a three-game set against the San Francisco Giants with a tough 3–2 loss on Sunday, unable to overcome early defensive miscues and a stellar outing from Giants starter Robbie Ray. Michael Soroka settled in after a rocky start, delivering six solid innings, but the offense couldn't capitalize until late. Despite a ninth-inning rally led by CJ Abrams and James Wood, the Nats came up just short, with Alex Call's defensive struggles and final at-bat proving costly. Still, the team showed fight, and manager Davey Martinez praised their resilience. Saturday's game was a bright spot, with Jake Irvin delivering one of the best starts of his career—eight scoreless innings of dominance. The win also showcased the promise of the Nationals' next generation, with James Wood going deep and Daylen Lile making a highlight-reel catch in his second big league game. Lile's polished plate approach and defense hint at long-term potential, while attention now turns to top third base prospect Brady House, who's raking in Triple-A. With young stars emerging and the team going 6–4 in their last 10, the Nats may be building something special on the fly.

The Nats came out on top in a seesaw affair as they walked off the Mets 5-4; snapping New York's seven game winning streak. Al & Tim have plenty to recap from the exciting evening in DC, including the Nationals pulling off a triple play for the first time in Navy Yard.(05:45) CJ Abrams scored the winning run in dramatic fashion as he came around all the way from first base on a James Wood single.  Abrams also tripled earlier in the game; his first hit since returning form the IL.(08:05) Dylan Crews had one of his best games yet as he scored three runs in the win.  Crews manufactured an early run by capitalizing on a mental mistake by Brandon Nimmo that unexpectedly put him in scoring position. Crews also tripled in the 9th as Juan Soto was unable to make the play in RF.(13:45) Jake Irvin was excellent as he pitched into the top of the 8th and did not allow a run through the initial seven innings. Irvin had a slow start to the season and has been able to drop his ERA down to 3.19.(18:00) Jose A. Ferrar allowed three runs after taking over for Irvin in the top of the 8th.  Kyle Finnegan gave up the big hit of the inning as Crews could not make a diving grab that led to a bases clearing triple by Mark Vientos.(26:00) Brady House hit his 4th homer of the AAA season and his OPS is at .877.

Tuesday was a fun one in Navy Yard as the Nats blanked the Orioles 7-0 to open the three game series.  Al & Mark heap plenty of praise upon Mitchell Parker, who  lasted eight frames for the first time in his career, and retired the final 17 Baltimore hitters he faced. Parker's ERA sits at 1.73 through five starts this season.(12:30) The offense broke out with 10 extra base hits and 14 hits overall.  Nathaniel Lowe & Dylan Crews each went deep and three players each had a trio of hits in the victory (James Wood, Keibert Ruiz, and Jose Tena). The team so far has hit 25 homers in 23 games, a more prolific pace than in years past.(18:30) Tena's big night leads to a discussion on the status of Brady House, who is playing 3B in AAA. House was the team's 1st Round Pick in 2021.(23:00) A brief recap of CJ Abrams' rehab assignment in Harrisburg on Tuesday night.(25:10) Colin Poche only faced the minimum three Orioles hitters even though he was pitching with a seven run lead.  Poche walked the first two batters he saw and that immediately forced Cole Henry to get up and ready in the bullpen.  Poche's ERA is currently at a staggering 15.00.(31:15) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, shares the latest from AAA.  Hear about lefty reliever Konnor Pilkington, who is having a good start to 2025.

The Nats have now won three in a row after defeating the defending World Series champion Dodgers 6-4 on Monday night in Navy Yard.  Mark & Al discuss MacKenzie Gore's solid outing where he only allowed a pair of runs in six innings of work.  Those two LA runs came off of a Shohei Ohtani 2-run HR, part of his evening where he was a double shy from the cycle.(10:00) Kyle Finnegan not only got the save, but took care of the final five outs.  He has recorded the final out in three consecutive days and in all likelihood will be unavailable on Tuesday.(17:10) James Wood homered for the first time this season to put Washington ahead 5-2. Wood was removed in the top of the 9th for defensive purposes by Jacob Young even though Wood was on deck if the Dodgers forced a bottom of the 9th.(22:10) Keibert Ruiz had a RBI double to extend the lead to 6-2.  Ruiz's strong start to the season continues as his OPS is currently at .981.(25:00) There were more instances of runners getting thrown out on base and three Nats have been tagged out at home in the past two days.  This has an ongoing issue over the past few seasons.(30:30) Brad Lord will start for the injury plagued pitching staff on Tuesday and Jackson Rutledge will likely come into relieve him. Lord was a starter in the minors and transitioned to a reliever during Spring Training.  This is a chain reaction to Michael Soroka getting placed on the IL shortly after DJ Herz did as well.(36:20) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the AAA-Rochester Red Wings, provides an update on Brady House, Robert Hassell III, Darren Baker, and more.

As the Washington Nationals prepare for the season, two young prospects, Robert Hassell III and Brady House, have been left off the Opening Day roster. While both players show promise—Hassell with a strong .370 batting average this spring and House improving his performance to .333—they still need more experience in the minors to fully develop. Manager Davey Martinez believes they could debut in 2025, but until then, they are expected to continue honing their skills at Triple-A, especially since established players like Jacob Young and Paul DeJong are currently securing key positions. In addition to roster updates, there are ongoing discussions about first baseman/designated hitter Josh Bell, who is expected to be a significant trade candidate this season as the Nationals continue to rebuild. Given his one-year contract and the team's challenges, Bell could attract interest from contending teams if he performs well. Meanwhile, young talents in the minors, including Hassell, could eventually step into vital roles like the DH position. The team is watching closely as the trade deadline approaches, keeping an eye on potential destinations for Bell and the development of their young prospects. Ready to snack smarter? Brady House, the Nationals' promising 21-year-old prospect, is generating excitement as he prepares for a potential major league debut this season. After experiencing some struggles last year with a career-low .699 OPS due to plate discipline issues, House took a step back during the offseason to refine his skills. Training with seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt helped him develop a better understanding of hitting, especially in managing full-count situations and recognizing pitches. House has changed his mindset to focus on making strong swings rather than simply surviving the count, which has shown improvements in his spring performance, boasting a .333 batting average and an .821 OPS. As the Nationals seek a long-term solution at third base following Anthony Rendon's departure, House's defensive skills and offensive potential have drawn comparisons to a young Ryan Zimmerman. Despite a rough season in 2024 that saw him fall off many top prospect lists, the team's decision to sign Paul DeJong on a one-year deal suggests they still harbor confidence in House's abilities. With 19 home runs last season and a focus on improving his plate discipline, fans are eager to see how he develops and contributes to the team's future.

The Nationals face a challenging offseason as they aim to bolster their lineup, particularly in addressing their significant power shortage, having ranked near the bottom in home runs for the past two seasons. With emerging talents like James Wood and Dylan Crews set to debut and the potential addition of 2021 first-round pick Brady House, there's hope for improvement in slugging. However, to truly enhance their offensive capability, the team will need to seek established power hitters through free agency, especially for the first base position, which has been a weak spot since Ryan Zimmerman's retirement and Josh Bell's trade.

Baker sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" at The Friendly Confines when he was a four year old child when his dad was the Cubs Skipper. (04:00) MacKenzie Gore was awful and allowed seven runs in under four innings on the mound. This start was a setback for the young lefty, who was coming off of three consecutive solid outings. The hosts look big picture at the situation moving forward with Gore as confidence in him being the Ace of the future is waning. (15:00) The bullpen had a heavy workload in the loss and Ildemaro Vargas got the call to pitch the 9th inning. Are you in favor a mercy rule to avoid such instances in the future? This is 5th time in the past few years that Vargas has been used in relief. (22:10) Trevor Williams made a rehab start for Harrisburg and will do so again on Sunday. The Nats lost 6-2 on Wednesday night at Citi Field for their fourth straight defeat. Al & Mark wonder if this latest stretch is indicative of where things are headed or just a tough portion of the schedule due to the lack of days off. (06:00) Derek Law continued his trend of not holding inheriting runners after taking over for Patrick Corbin in the bottom of the 6th. The hosts put into perspective how much Law has struggled under those circumstances this season. (14:00) Corbin is quantitatively the worst starting pitcher in the majors as he has the highest WHIP. Corbin allowed four runs and only lasted 73 pitches vs. the Mets. (19:00) Juan Yepez had a RBI single and has been consistently playing 1B since he and Joey Meneses swapped roster spots last week. Yepez is 7 for 24 since being promoted from Rochester. (24:00) Ildemaro Vargas got the start at 3B and Trey Lipscomb was given the night off. This is noteworthy because last week it seemed like 3B was Lipscomb's job until Brady House eventually makes his way to Washington. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats lost 8-3 to the Cardinals on a scorching Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital. Al & Mark begin the show by discussing how the pitching staff is clearly fatigued during this stretch of 17 games in 17 days. DJ Herz did not have a good outing as he allowed five runs in less than five innings of work. Herz was lifted after 102 pitches and four relievers were needed behind him. (14:00) James Wood singled and drew a pair of walks in the loss. Wood so far has been walked six times in seven games and this seems like this might become a pattern for the rookie. (20:00) CJ Abrams is the team's lone representative at this month's All-Star game. Abrams leads the Nats in almost every offensive statistical category including OPS at .859. Mark notes that CJ has been Washington's lead-off hitter for a full calendar year now. (24:00) Jake Irvin however was snubbed from the National League roster and Al points out how this is a mistake. Irvin ranks 4th in WHIP in the NL and is tied for 2nd in pitching WAR. (31:00) Brady House has been promoted to play 3B at AAA-Rochester one day after Trey Lipscomb was promoted back to the Nationals. Could House be on the 2025 Opening Day roster? (36:00) Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, join Nats Chat for the fourth consecutive year. Bob tells Tim about Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, the only female pitcher in Negro Leagues history. Mamie lived for many years in the DMV before passing away in 2017. Learn more about your ad choices.
