The Washington Nationals are quietly building one of the most intriguing runs in baseball — stacking road series wins, getting elite-level production from CJ Abrams, and navigating the growing pains of Dylan Crews while still finding ways to win. In this episode of Nats Minutecast, we break down a gritty 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays and what it reveals about the Nationals' evolving identity under Blake Butera. What We Cover: The Nationals push for their fifth straight series win and sixth straight road series win How CJ Abrams is emerging as a true All-Star level impact bat Why Dylan Crews' stat line is misleading — and what his xwOBA (expected weighted on-base average) really says about his future The real issue behind Crews' struggles: chase rate (swings outside the strike zone) and plate discipline How the Nationals bullpen survived a high-leverage Tampa Bay game despite heavy usage Andrew Alvarez's key start and why pitch sequencing matters against disciplined lineups Why this roster is starting to show traits of a legitimate competitive team rather than a rebuilding club Farm system update: Brady House, Harry Ford, YoYo Morales, and more continue forcing roster pressure Key Stats Explained in Episode: AVG (Batting Average): Hits divided by at-bats OPS (On-base Plus Slugging): Overall offensive production metric wOBA (Weighted On-Base Average): Value-based hitting metric xwOBA (Expected Weighted On-Base Average): Statcast projection based on quality of contact BB (Walks): Plate appearances ending in four balls K (Strikeouts): Batters retired via three strikes IP (Innings Pitched): Outs recorded divided by three ERA (Earned Run Average): Runs allowed per nine innings Big Picture: This isn't just a hot stretch — it's a team starting to develop identity. The Nationals are winning in multiple ways: bullpen resilience, timely power, and improving defensive consistency. The question now isn't whether they can compete in individual games… It's whether this version of the Nationals is sustainable over a full season. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Gavin Fien Explained & Defining Success for the Washington Nationals in 2026

The Washington Nationals are leaning into a new philosophy — and Gavin Fien is the clearest signal yet. In this episode of the Nats Minutecast, we break down why model-driven teams love Gavin Fien, what the data says about his elite bat speed, contact ability, and power ceiling, and why traditional scouting concerns about his swing and batted-ball profile are still very real. This isn't about what Fien is today — it's about whether the Nationals' new development infrastructure can unlock a potential core bat for the future. Then, we zoom out to the 2026 Nationals outlook and answer the uncomfortable but necessary question: what does a successful season actually look like? With the Nats unlikely to contend, success hinges on development — from James Wood, Dylan Crews, Brady House, CJ Abrams, and Harry Ford, to breakout arms like Cade Cavalli and the next wave coming through the farm system. This episode focuses on player development, rebuild strategy, and long-term upside, not just wins and losses — and why 2026 may be more important than the standings suggest. The Rangers trade Marcus Seimen to the Mets for Brandon Nimmo. a.I wrote 1000 words about the deal to our Patreon members. What did you think of the deal?b.We just talked about the Mets last Sunday and I don't know if this clarifies things or makes it more muddled. We will look at both the infield and outfieldc. We discussed Josh Smith getting time in the outfield last week, but assuming they don't sign anyone, he should open as the starting second baseman. Thoughts on Josh Smith at second?2.The Blue Jays made noise by signing Dylan Cease for 7-years and $210 million. WOW. That's a lot of scratch. Did you like the signing?3.The Orioles finally spend a little bit of money, signing Ryan Helsley to a 2-year, $28 million contract. It takes a big closer arm off the board. Your thoughts?Segment 3 – Fantasy Questions of the NL East – NationalsWashington Nationals1.James Wood hit 31 home runs last season, but only 7 in the second half. He's the ninth outfielder off the board. Is that something that appeals to you?a.We will look at other outfielders going around him2.Dylan Crews – sigh.a.2026 stat line – AB, HR, SB, and BA3.I liked Brady House in the minor leagues and have him in one Dynasty League. I'm worried that his poor approach is catching up to him. In 74 MLB games, he walked eight times. a.Is this a growth stock or someone who will start the season in the minor leagues?b.The NFBC drafters are not bullish as he's the 46th third baseman off the board (ADP of 598). Is that worth a pick in the low 30s in D&H Leagues?4.Daylen Lile showed flashes last season, posting a .299 batting average with nine home runs and eight stolen bases in 351 plate appearances.a.The NFBC drafters seem to think he's a growth stock as he's the 50th outfielder off the board. Is a strong #4 starter feel right or is that a bit too rich?5.Out of the Nationals starters, which pitcher intrigues you the most?6.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)Segment 4 – Fantasy Questions of the AL East – Orioles and Red SoxBaltimore Orioles1.After winning 91 games in 2024, the Orioles lost 87 games in 2025. Do they bounce back in 2026? How many games do they win?2.Samuel Bassalo – 2026 stat line - AB, HR, BA3.Gunnar Henderson hit 37 home runs in 2024 but only 17 in 2025. Exit velo is still 92.1 MPH (down slightly from 2024 – 92.8) but still in the top 10 percentile of the league. Over/Under 30 home runs in 2026?4.Nobody seems to be buying Coby Mayo's late home run surge as his ADP is 480 and he's the 31st first baseman off the board. Are you buying it?5.Trevor Rogers was a revelation last season, posting a 1.81 ERA in 18 starts. However, his xERA was 3.41 and he only struck out 8.8 per nine. The Nats lost on Friday night 6-5 at Dodger Stadium to open their nine game West Coast Road Trip. Mark (From LA) & Al discuss MacKenzie's Gore subpar's outing where he gave up five earned runs in over five innings of work. Gore issued four walks and only recorded four strikeouts, keeping him behind Boston Garrett Crochet for the MLB lead in strikeouts.(09:45) The offense slugged a trio of homers but was only 1 for 8 w/ RISP. Riley Adams ended an 0 for 32 slump in emphatic fashion with a solo HR in the top of the 5th to cut the deficit to 4-2.(18:00) Luis Garcia Jr. had a clutch pinch-hit 2-run double to trim the Dodger lead to 6-4 in the top of the 7th.  Amed Rosario got the nod at 2B (and homered) and Garcia replaced Andres Chapparo at DH for the pinch- hit opportunity.(21:10) Paul DeJong had four hits on Friday night in his rehab assignment with AA-Harrisburg. It is looking like DeJong will serve as an utility infielder for Washington as Brady House is now occupying 3B.(23:40) A quick look at what we know about the contractual situations for both the Manager and GM.

Will a major change happen soon in the clubhouse?(16:00) Cole Henry was the main culprit for the Rockies avalanche in the top of the 7th as he allowed four runs without a recording a single out. Jackson Rutledge also struggled in that frame as he ceded back to back homers.(20:05) Michael Soroka lasted six innings, but did issue three "hit by pitch". Soroka gave up a pair of homers and has given up ten in just nine starts this season.(24:00) The offense totaled six runs, but most of that came later after already trailing 10-1. House looked comfortable defensively and Davey Martinez said pregame that House will be the everyday 3B.(14:40) Daylen Lile hit his first career MLB homer in the bottom of the 5th in his first game since returning from AAA.
