The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico is on track to be the most expensive one ever for match-going fans. The cheapest general sale tickets for the final are four times as expensive as they were for the final in Qatar in 2022, and represent only a small proportion of total seats. We look at the reasons for this surge in prices. Also in this edition: solar power overtakes coal in the US, in spite of Donald Trump's policies.
Last Call - Gene offers up some final thoughts on Robert Kraft & the Buffalo Bills news from mandatory mini camp.

In the latest episode of the Kliq This podcast, wrestling legend Kevin Nash and his cohost dive into a wide array of current events and personal reflections. The duo kicks things off with some surprising financial candor, discussing recent market turbulence and the sheer unpredictability of cryptocurrency investments. The conversation smoothly transitions into the realm of professional basketball, where Kevin offers his seasoned takes on the NBA playoffs, evaluating the raw talent of rising stars like Victor Wembanyama against the legendary grit of past eras. The centerpiece of episode 205 tackles a bizarre and fascinating study regarding the intelligence of sports entertainment fanbases. Listeners will hear the hosts break down the jaw-dropping statistics claiming that WWE viewers hold surprisingly high IQ scores, with a specific focus on the astronomical numbers attributed to supporters of Roman Reigns. They question the methodology behind the data and explore what it really means to acknowledge the Tribal Chief, leaving fans to wonder where their own intelligence ranks in the grand scheme of the squared circle. Rounding out the show, the broadcast takes a hilarious detour into true crime and pop culture nostalgia. Kevin reacts to a pair of unbelievable headlines featuring a radioactive Florida local and a brazen gold scam, proving that reality is often stranger than fiction. The episode caps off with a trip down memory lane, touching on the unique innocence of the 1980s and the unforgettable cinematic moments of classic films, ensuring a wildly entertaining ride from start to finish. In this episode of The Gametime Guru, I sit down with Todd Smith, author of Relegated, to break down one of the most fascinating systems in global sports: promotion and relegation in English soccer. As an American sports fan, I've always been intrigued by the idea that a team can lose its place in the top league based on performance. In the United States, struggling teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS can have bad seasons and still remain in the league. But in English football, the stakes are completely different. If a club finishes at the bottom of the table, it can be relegated to a lower division, losing money, visibility, players, TV revenue, and even part of its identity. Todd Smith experienced this system firsthand while researching his book Relegated. He traveled across the English football pyramid, visiting Premier League stadiums, lower league clubs, small towns, gritty industrial cities, and passionate football communities to understand what relegation really means beyond the scoreboard. In this conversation, Todd and I talk about how relegation works in English soccer, why promotion and relegation creates real stakes every season, how football clubs impact local economies, and why soccer fandom in England is so deeply connected to identity, history, class, community, and pride. We also discuss whether relegation could ever work in American sports. Could the NFL, NBA, MLB, or MLS ever adopt a promotion and relegation system? Would American owners ever allow that much financial risk? And what would happen if a major franchise could actually lose its place in the top league? This episode is perfect for soccer fans, Premier League fans, MLS fans, sports business fans, and anyone interested in the cultural and economic impact of sports around the world. Make sure to grab a copy of Relegated by Todd Smith and follow his work: Website: toddsmithauthor.com Instagram: @relegatedthebook Subscribe to The Gametime Guru for more interviews with athletes, coaches, authors, sports figures, and leaders from around the world as I help you see sports through a different lens.

Send us Fan MailGetting told “no” can flip your whole mood in seconds, especially when you thought you'd at least get a fair shot. We start there, with a real-time reaction to a rejection and a bigger question behind it: how much of our disappointment is the outcome, and how much is the expectation we built around it? I talk through pride, emotional triggers, and the practical safeguards I use to keep feelings from turning into decisions I regret. Then we pivot into sports culture and the way modern sports debate shows drifted from analysis into performance. When hot takes get rewarded, the conversation becomes “you're wrong” instead of “here's why I disagree,” and fans learn less even while they watch more. We dig into how media incentives, league partnerships, and gambling attention can shape narratives, and why it's worth recognizing when you're being nudged toward a conclusion instead of being given tools to think. From there, the same lens goes to faith and history. I share what sparked my curiosity about early Christianity in Ethiopia, different biblical canons, and what gets emphasized or removed when institutions gain power. My goal isn't to hand you a final answer. It's to model a habit: hold conclusions in pencil, check multiple sources, and stay brave enough to ask questions even when it's uncomfortable. If you like conversations about critical thinking, media literacy, religion and history, and living with more freedom in a consumer economy, hit play. Duke University leaves millions of dollars on the table every year by giving away free tickets to the most sought-after game in college basketball. The bizarre ticket allocation system includes weeks of camping in tents, a 58-question trivia exam, border guards with air horns at 3 AM, and a 50-page student-written constitution with its own appeals court. In this special 20th-anniversary episode, EconTalk's Russ Roberts and returning favorite Michael Munger (appearance #51!) use the legendary Duke-UNC rivalry to explore the fundamental economics question: how do you deal with a world when there isn't enough of something to go around? Along the way, they ask why a university that squeezes students on every other margin, might deliberately forgo a fortune on ticket sales. The answer has everything to do with community, belonging, and the same psychology that bonds fighter pilots and elite military units.
