Boston Celtics Game Day Recap

Well, the 2022-2023 season has come to an end after a very tough loss to Miami in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. This off-season is going to be quiet and loud at the same time if that's possible. I don't expect there to be much movement for the core of this team and Brad has already made it clear that Joe Mazzula is going to remain in the Head Coaching role. In this podcast we break down the coaching situation, whether or not JB will get the Supermax or get traded and what moves might be on the horizon for the Celtics. The Celtics historical comeback falls short as they lose Game 7 103-84. This was truly a horrible showing from start to finish. The very first possession for the Celtics resulted in Tatum rolling an ankle and he was left grimacing all game long. With Tatum going down, all fans turn to JB and expect him to pick up the slack and then he comes out with an 8 turnover game on an extremely inefficient shooting night. The only Celtics player that showed up and played with heart was Derrick White and even he got hurt and missed the majority of the 4th quarter. The 3pt shot was the reason that we won 57 games this year and was a huge part of our identity but we came out here and laid an egg in this one. The Celtics started this game 0-10 from 3 and only ended the game shooting 9-42 (21%) from 3. Honestly, I liked most of the attempts that they had but nothing was falling. Brogdon, our 6th Man of the Year, was just coming off of an injury and only played in 7 minutes tonight but managed to do the impossible and was a -15 in those 7 minutes. Smart, who was exceptional through most of this series, was a nonfactor in this one. Horford didn't do much. Grant was a nonfactor. Timelord actually played really well in his minutes but his minutes were limited. That is the only major critique I have from Joe in this game. We should have seen more minutes from Timelord but outside of that, there's not much you can do about this from a rotation standpoint. Give credit to Miami for battling through this and winning a game that nobody expected them to win after nearly blowing a 3-0 series lead. CELTICS WIN!! CELTICS WIN!! Derrick White hits an incredible putback at the buzzer to win 104-103 forcing a Game 7 back in Boston!!! This was a game that the Celtics led by as many as 10 with just over 4 minutes left in the game and they started walking the ball up and forcing things and we watched Miami walk the lead down little by little. The Celtics found themselves up 2 with :16 left and then Horford fouled Butler on a 3pt shot. Butler, naturally, hit all 3 FTs taking a 1pt lead with just :03 left. During the inbounds, JB and Tatum couldn't get open so the ball ended up in Smart's hands and he immediately turns around, shoots and misses but Derrick frickin White was there for the putback at the buzzer!! It certainly wasn't a perfect game but it doesn't matter if you win by 1 or 21. A win is a win and with this win, we have now become the 4th team to ever force a Game 7 after going down 0-3. WOW!!! Celtics blow out the Heat once again 110-97 forcing a Game 6 back in Miami!! This was another flawless performance from the Celtics start to finish. It started with a 15-5 lead in the first 5 minutes because of their 3 early steals and that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Celtics got back to their roots and played phenomenal defense in this one. They had 13 steals in this one and ended up scoring 27pts off of Miami's 16 turnovers. This was a team effort on the defensive end. What was especially impressive was the defense played on both Jimmy and Bam. We held Jimmy to 14pts and Bam to just 16 but turned him over 6 times as well. Every time Bam put the ball on the floor, JB or Smart was there poking the ball away forcing turnover after turnover. On top of the excellent defense, we saw a really solid offensive performance. Marcus Smart was great in this one contributing 23pts on a super efficient 4-6 from 3. Derrick White was the leading scorer with 24pts on a ridiculous 6-8 from 3. Jayson Tatum, while the 3s weren't falling, was doing a great job facilitating. He ended the night with 21pts and 11ast. He was doubled a lot in this one, as he has been most of this series, but he did a great job of recognizing it early and finding the right guy. He was also much more aggressive getting into the heart of the defense. JB, who has struggled most of this series, shot his way out of the funk and looked really good in this one on both sides of the ball as well. The Celtics as a team shot 16-39 (41%) from 3. When you combine that with the defense that we played holding Miami to just 97pts, you are going to win a lot of games. The Celtics managed to take a 3-0 series and force a Game 6 after two convincing wins. Can they do it again on Saturday to force a Game 7? We shall find out soon! The Celtics blow out the Heat 116-99 and force a Game 5 back in Boston. The Celtics found themselves down 6 after the first quarter and at halftime thanks in large part to some horrible turnovers. The Celtics gave up 5pts on 5 turnovers in the first quarter and 10pts off 8 turnovers in the second but only committed 2 turnovers in the entire half which helped the Celtics climb back and then push their lead. While the Celtics took care of the ball on the offensive end, they also took care of business on the defensive end with 8stl and 8blk while also scoring 27pts on the Heat's 16 turnovers. The Celtics had a lot of guys step up in this game but you have to give a lot of credit to Jayson Tatum for picking himself up after a bad first half and going on to score 14pts in the third and 11pts in the 4th to really ice this game. On top of Tatum, we saw Grant really step up adding 14pts on 4-6 from 3 as well as a really good game defensively that was highlighted by a beautiful block on Butler late in the game. White played really well and kept the Celtics within reach at the beginning of this game while the Jays weren't playing well. Horford, who has been horrible from beyond the arc this series, also stepped up huge in this with 12pts 7reb 4ast on 3-6 from 3 and a team high +23. The Celtics won this game because of their incredible defense throughout but they also played to their potential on the offensive end shooting 18-45 from 3 while assisting on 28 of 43fgm. This is Celtics basketball and as great as it was to watch, there is a lot of work to be done as the Celtics still find themselves down 3-1 in the series. The Celtics fall to the Miami Heat 123-116 after an epic 3rd quarter collapse that resulted in the Celtics being out scored 46-25. To say the defense fell apart is an understatement. The most frustrating part of this game is that we out scored the Heat by 14pts in the other 3 quarters combined but that 3rd quarter deficit was just insurmountable. WOWWWW!!!! Jayson Tatum erupts for 51pts in the Mother's Day Massacre! 51pts is an NBA Record for most points in a Game 7. He was truly unstoppable in this one. What impressed me the most was that he was searching out Embiid in the pick and roll over and over and one possession he would attack him and get to the rim and the next it would be a stepback 3 in his face. He drew Embiid out to the perimeter so much that Philly opted to go into a zone just for Tatum to blow that apart as well! As good as Tatum was in this game, the defense was even better. The Celtics held the 76ers to just 88pts on the game including a 10pt 3rd quarter where the Celtics blew this game open. There was a 6 minute stretch in the 3rd quarter where we held them scoreless. A lot of credit needs to be given to Al Horford for this. Al had 2stl and 3blk and was as impressive on the defensive side as we've seen all year long. The Celtics did a great job as a whole making sure Al could stay on Embiid and not get lost in the pick and roll and it worked wonders. Guys were busting through screens staying with their guy on those motions which played a huge part. They all played with extremely active hands getting in all the passing lanes and the rotations were flawless. Joe had Timelord on Tucker but had him sagging off a lot for extra help defense and, while it hurt to start as Tucker had 3 quick 3s, Tucker isn't the guy that's going to sustain that. That extra help defense clogged up the lane making it very hard for Embiid to get going. James Harden and Joel Embiid combined for 24pts on 8-29 (27%) from the field compared to Tatum's 51pts on 17-28 (60%)! The Celtics take down Philly forcing a Game 7 after an excellent Marcus Smart performance. This was a game where Jayson Tatum was a no show for a large part of the offensive game scoring just 3pts after 3 quarters but he put on a show scoring 16pts in the 4th quarter alone including 3 stepback 3s to secure the win for the Celtics. This was a game where the Celtics built a lead as large as 16pts and watched the lead collapse giving Philly hope before we stole their hearts! The Celtics journey to Banner 18 just became a little bit harder. They fall to Philly 3-2 in the series and now face 2 must win games. The Celtics fall to the 76ers 116-115 and the series is now tied 2-2. This was a game that Jaylen Brown absolutely dominated in early but nobody else got it going. JB scored 12pts in the first 8 minutes BUT also got in foul trouble so once Joe subbed him out, the 76ers went on a 12-4 run for the remaining 4:33 and ended the first quarter with an 8pt lead. Tatum was horrible in the first half making his first bucket with about a minute to go in the second quarter. He turned it on in the second half and was excellent the rest of the way. Offensively, this was a pretty solid game for the Celtics outside of that first quarter. They scored 31pts in the 2nd and 33pts in the third but that 19pt first quarter killed the Celtics. They fell down by as many as 16 in the 2nd quarter but give them some credit because they battled back in this one taking a lead down the stretch. A huge part of their comeback was because of our defensive intensity. Horford was a huge part of that with 3blks in that 4th quarter and Marcus Smart also came up huge on that end as well. He took a massive charge on Embiid while we were up 112-111 but was also a catalyst on the offensive end during that comeback. He hit 2 big 3s including one that put the Celtics up 102-98. The big blunder in this game was the Embiid double team by JB that left James Harden wide open for a 3 that put Philly up 116-115 with :19 left. James Harden is the last guy you want to leave wide open in this game. It took Embiid to play like an MVP and James Harden to put up 42pts to win by 1 in OT. At the end of the day, we lost. On the night that Joel Embiid receives his MVP trophy, the Celtics walk into Philly and smack them in the mouth 114-102. This is a very impressive win where we got contributions everywhere. Tatum led the way with 27pts 10reb 5ast with some clutch baskets at the end of the game and hopefully came out of the slump he was in. JB came out aggressive again scoring 23pts along with 7reb and 5ast on just 4 3pt attempts. After being laughed at when he called himself an elite 3pt shooter, Al Horford came out and destroyed Philly with 17pts 7reb 2ast 2stl on 5-7 from beyond the arch to shut up the haters from Philly. We alsosaw great performances from our 3 headed guard monster in Smart, White and Brogdon. All of them contributed at a high level throughout this game. Marcus Smart accumulated approximately 17 Tommy Points in this game making huge hustle play after huge hustle play. Brogdon, although quiet for most of the night added 7pts in the 4th quarter and hit a huge 3 to go up 100-92 after a big Philly run late. This truly was a team effort. Grant, while he didn't get on the scoreboard from a scoring perspective, was incredible defensively tonight forcing Embiid into a lot of tough shots. The game plan most nights when we face the 76ers is to let Embiid cook and shut down everyone else. Tonight we held Harden to 3-14 from the field, Maxey to 4-16 form the field and Harris to just 7pts on the night. It got to a point where we were in Harden's head so much that he was passing out of open floater attempts at the rim. Defensively tonight, we were fantastic. Offensively, the 3s weren't falling at the rate that we would like but the Celtics never seemed to slow down their offense and played with pace so they never got out of rhythm which has been their downfall a lot this year. This wasn't a perfect game, but it was pretty close. The Celtics now take a 2-1 lead heading into game 4. Can they make it 3-1 before heading back to Boston? WOW. The Celtics blow out the 76ers 121-87 in Embiid's return. This was a game where Payton Pritchard out scored Jayson Tatum too. Go figure. We'll start here and be done with negatives but Tatum was bad. He got in foul trouble early and never got into a rhythm. He only played 19 minutes tonight and scored 7pts on 1-7 from the field. Outside of him, this was as beautiful as it gets. JB got us going early with 13pts in the first quarter to start his 25pt night and was the steady hand for the Celtics most of the night. Our 3 guard trio was spectacular tonight. Marcus Smart was excellent on both sides of the ball and carried a lot of the scoring load at times when the Celtics really needed a bucket and was bodying guys in the paint. Brogdon scored 23pts in this one on 7-15 from the field and 6-10 from 3. He was unstoppable. Derrick White only scored 5pts on 1-4 from the the field but turned on the jets in the 3rd quarter and added another 10. JB, White and Brogdon combined for 28pts in that 3rd quarter alone and fueled a 35-16 quarter! Horford shot horribly but was excellent defensively in this one adding another 2blks and stl. Timelord also added 3blks in his 22min but the best big in my opinion tonight was Grant Williams. He played 29min in this one now that Embiid was back and we saw some really big lineups with Harris, Embiid and Reed and Grant feasted. He added 12pts on 4-8 from 3 along with 4ast and 1stl with an excellent defensive game as well. Last game we were crushed by the zone defense, and the high pick and roll with Harden. Mazzula completely switched up the game plan in this one and instead of running Tatum at the FT line extended to beat the zone, we had Brogdon, JB and Smart attack the heart of the defense off the dribble and it worked wonders. Defensively, instead of switching everything and leaving Horford stranded against Embiid, we fought through everything tonight and stuck with the matchups that we wanted. Offensively and defensively, this game was perfection. Time to carry this into game 3 on Friday night and take back home court advantage! The Celtics fall to the Embiid-less 76ers 119-115 and go down 1-0 in the 2nd round. The blueprint for beating Philly has always been "Let Embiid cook and shut everyone else down" and when Embiid isn't there, it's a little hard to implement that strategy. The Celtics were all out of sorts defensively and looked really bad. Offensively, the Celtics came out of the gates firing and looking like the best offense the NBA has ever seen but that cooled off as well. The Celtics scored 38pts in the first quarter on 17-20 from the field while getting almost all of their points in the paint off of great ball and player movement. A lot of that movement stopped in the remaining 3 quarters. Tatum was sensational in this one scoring 39pts with only 5 3pt attempts. He finally became more aggressive, as did most of the team and we saw that as we outscored the 76ers 66-42 in the paint. While the offense certainly cooled down after the first quarter, it was still pretty good throughout most of this game. The one negative from the offense was the ridiculous amount of turnovers and the timeliness of them. We gave up 20pts off our 16 turnovers including one of the biggest boneheaded turnovers in the world, after an already horrible possession, by Brogdon giving Maxey a wide open layup to go up 114-113 with :30 left. Defensively, our biggest issue was pick and roll defense once again. After getting torched that way by Trae in the first round, Harden comes out and puts on a masterclass scoring 45pts. As if that wasn't impressive enough, they also had guys like Melton who had 17pts in the first half and Maxey with 26pts in the game. There is still a lot that the Celtics need to prove on the defensive end but some of that might be fixed with simple rotation adjustments. After playing pretty well defensively, Timelord got little to no time in the 4th quarter and nothing down the stretch. Grant only played 4 minutes in this one and, even without Embiid, Philly is a big enough team where he should be getting more time especially in a game where Al's shot wasn't falling. Overall, this was a really tough game to lose without Embiid on the floor. Celtics look to bounce back Wednesday night and even up this series. The Celtics beat the Hawks 128-120 and are moving on to Philly!!! This was a nail biter through and through. The defense through 3 quarters was atrocious but the Celtics stepped up big time in the 4th and held the Hawks to just 20pts after 3 straight quarters of 33+. Trae Young cooked the Celtics in the first half with 25pts BUT the Celtics locked him up in the second half and held him to just 5pts!! This game was truly won by our trio of JB, Tatum and Smart. JB, to me, was the best player on the court tonight because he was super aggressive and was pushing the pace all night long getting easy buckets in transition. JB ended the night with a team high 32pts on 13-25 from the field and 6-8 from 3. Tatum flirted with a 30pt Triple Double adding 14reb and 7ast including a monster block on Collins with :19 left that helped solidify this game. Smart got the Celtics started in this game with 7pts 2reb 2ast contributing to all 12 of the Celtics pts in the first 2:30 of the game and despite him missing 2 wide open 3s in the 4th, he hit a clutch 3 from JB to go up 124-116 with 1`:32 left and then hit another big layup to go up 126-119 with :59 left. That trio did it all tonight! We had plenty of guys step up in this one but one that we haven't talked about much in this series is Grant Williams. Credit Joe Mazzulla for making the adjustment and going with Grant for 17min in this one. His defense certainly paid off at times against Collins but he also had a huge steal at half court that led to a Brogdon floater and then took a charge on Collins. This was not a pretty game for the most part but down the stretch in the 4th quarter was excellent. This is how you finish basketball games. The Celtics were up with 111-99 with 5:24 left in this game and managed to lose 119-117. The Celtics did a great job all night of taking good care of the ball. They only had 2 turnovers at half, 4 after the 3rd quarter and then added on another 5 late in that 4th quarter. When the Hawks were making their comeback, Tatum throws the ball away and should've gotten called for a transition take foul which would've hurt us even more but then Trae hits a 3. Very next possession, Smart turns the ball over and Trae hits another deep 3 tying the game at 111. Then we get another moving screen from Smart followed by another dumb foul by Smart on Trae at halfcourt giving him FTs to go up 116-115. This was an all out collapse riddled with dumb turnovers and fouls after a full game of playing pretty well. What hurts even more about this loss is we had some guys that came in and stepped up to the pressure and it wasn't enough. JB was excellent in this one with 35pts 7reb 5ast on 15-23 from the field and was super aggressive getting to his spots all night long. Derrick White was great in this adding in 18pts including 2 clutch FTs to go up 117-116 with 7sec left right before Trae hit that dagger 3 with 1.8sec left. Horford, despite having another mediocre night offensively, stepped up again with 5blks alongside 5ast and a stl. I'll even give credit to Mazzulla who used his timeouts beautifully tonight, the rotations were great and even unexpected a bit. The Celtics became stagnant and watched the lead slip away a bit and he puts Blake in to insert some energy and the Celtics immediately go on a 5-0 run to extend the lead back up. Then the play call at the end getting Derrick White the ball to attack Trae was brilliant as well. There were so many things that were done well but the lead we built up wasn't enough to withstand the collapse we experienced late in the 4th. The Celtics beat the Atlanta Hawks 129-121 and take a 3-1 series lead! Mazzulla has talked all year about winning the margins and that is what the Celtics did tonight. After getting destroyed on the boards in Game 3, we saw the Celtics outrebound the Hawks 49-42. We also saw the Celtics beat them 18-8 in fast break pts, 56-44 with pts in the paint and 5-4 in blocks. Obviously winning the margins is important but having guys step up is just as important. JB started this game 1-9 from the field and then took his mask off and went nuclear. He ended the game with 31pts 4reb 3ast on 12-22 from the field and 3-4 from 3 so if you do the math out there, he was 11-13 from the field after taking his mask off. Tatum also had a tough start offensively but, like JB, also ended up with 31pts. The shooting splits were much less efficient than JB BUT he did go 11-12 from the FT line which made up for it. Tatum also put out an All Defensive performance with 3 highlight blocks in this one. Outside of the Jays, we had some really solid performances throughout. Marcus Smart was excellent once again with 19pts 4reb 4ast on a very efficient 8-14 from the field and 3-8 from 3 but also came up with a couple of massive defensive plays. Timelord was huge in this one adding 13pts and 15reb along with one of the biggest hustle plays of the night diving on the floor preventing a JB turnover and punching the ball right back to JB for a huge dunk to go up 123-113 late in this one. Derrick White and Brogdon both played really well in this one as well contributing at a super high level while also adding serious efficiency. Horford, despite going scoreless in tonight's game on his 2 failed shot attempts actually played pretty well also as he led the team in plus/minus (+17), assists (5) and steals (2). This was a really solid game offensively. Defensively, the Celtics came out really strong but, once again, really struggled defending Trae using drop coverage in the 2nd half. To put things in perspective, we held the Hawks to just 53pts in the 1st half and gave up 68 in the 2nd half. Celtics still have some stuff to clean up BUT they came away with a 3-1 series lead and a chance to wrap this series up in Game 5 on our home court! The Celtics fall to the Hawks 130-122 in a game where defense was nonexistent at times. Trae Young finally exploited the Celtics drop coverage and had a field day scoring 32pts alongside 6reb and 9ast. This game was lost on the defensive end and there's no ifs ands or buts about it. Offensively, the Celtics played pretty damn well. They scored 122pts on 44% from 3 alongside 31st which are both incredible. Derrick White and Jaylen Brown both got in foul trouble early and never got in a rhythm but other guys stepped up. After two straight DNP-CDs, Grant Williams got some early minutes because of JB and White's foul troubles and he took full advantage of them. He scored 14pts in just 18min on 4-4 from 3 and 2-2 from the FT line while taking 2 charges. He really made the most of his minutes tonight. Smart played great on both sides of the ball and scored 24pts alongside 8ast and 3stl while also shooting 42% from 3. Brogdon was also really solid with his 17pts 5ast. Tatum, despite a 29pt 10reb performance seemed off for a lot of the night. He only shot 40% from the field and 36% from 3 while turning the ball over 4 times. It wasn't his brightest game but there's no doubt in my mind that will change come game 4. The Hawks are a 27% 3pt shooting team that shot 44% tonight. The Celtics beat the Hawks 119-106 in another defensive masterclass. The Celtics actually came out of the gate looking terrible in this one finding themselves down big early and allowing 22pts in the first 6 minutes of the game. From there, the Celtics stopped sagging when Trae drove and defended him straight up and the entire team kicked it up a notch. After that 6 minute stretch, the Celtics held the Hawks scoreless for over 5 minutes and gave up just a single 3pt shot to Bogdanovic late in that first. To summarize, we gave up 22pts in the first 6 minutes and just 3pts in the final 6 minutes of the first quarter and the defensive intensity stayed high all night long. The team tallied 12blks and 10stls in this one and took advantage of it with 17 fast break pts. On top of the excellent defensive performance, we also saw some great offensive performances. Derrick White, once again, stepped up and played a major role with 26pts 7reb 2ast 1stl 3blk and really led the way with 14pts in the 4th quarter! Both of the Jays struggled as far as turnovers are concerned as they both had 4 but offensively, they were both pretty efficient from the field. Tatum had 29pts 10reb 6ast on 12-22 from the field and was 5-9 from 3 and was hitting stepback 3s in everyone's face. JB only had 18pts in this one but also had 3stl and 2blk while shooting 50% from the field and from 3. Brogdon led the way with 8ast alongside his 13pts and 7reb and was a beast on both sides of the ball. He struggled shooting but was doing an unbelievable job setting guys up for easy shots and creating offense from great defense all night. Smart and Timelord both played really well on both sides of the ball as well in this one. This was a really fun team win with great performances throughout as the Celtics take a 2-0 series lead! The Celtics beat the Hawks 112-99 and this was over as soon as it started. The Celtics found themselves with a 30pt halftime lead after an unbelievable showing on both sides of the ball. They held the Hawks to just 44 first half points and were on a string all night defensively. The Hawks were challenged on every shot and the Celtics were getting their hands in passing lanes the entire game. The first half offense for the Celtics was also as good as it gets. They were super aggressive getting into the body of both Trae and Murray and were getting easy buckets at the rim whenever they wanted. They still shot the ball well from deep (9-16) but it was the 36 points in the paint that was super impressive. Derrick White was probably the star of the game ending with 24pts 5reb and 7ast on a super efficient 7-13 from the field and 4-7 from 3. On top of a stellar night for White, both of the Jays played really well on both sides of the ball as well. Tatum ended the night with 25pts 11reb while JB finished with 29pts 12reb. Both of them had their highs and lows but overall it was an impressive night. Tatum had 21pts in the first half and only 4 in the second. Despite JB's great night, he also had a team high 6 turnovers. Neither of these are things that mattered in the grand scheme of things. We also saw some really good performances throughout the 8 man rotation we saw tonight. Smart had, arguably, the best defensive game we have seen from him in months including 3stl and 2blks but was also moving the ball really well offensively with his 7ast. Horford, who was quiet on the offensive end, hit a big 3 to go up 15 after a big Hawks run but also had 2 huge blocks on Murray at the rim. Timelord was a force to be reckoned with as well ending the night with 12pts 8reb 1stl 1blk all while being 6-6 from the field. This Hawks team might not be great BUT they were the highest scoring offense in the Eastern Conference all year averaging 118.4PPG and the Celtics held them to just 99. This win certainly wasn't perfect as the Celtics scored just 38pts in the second half but they pulled off the first win of the series taking a 1-0 lead and are now just 15 wins from raising Banner 18! The Celtics beat the Hawks 120-114 in the final regular season game of the year. This was a game where none of our normal rotational players played outside of Grant Williams and Derrick White. White realistically only played 5 minutes just so he could say he played all 82 games lol. Regardless, this was a fun game to watch. Pritchard, Hauser and Muscala went off and formed the Bus 1 Big 3. Pritchard had 30pts 14reb and 11ast and was very efficient from 3. Muscala contributed 27pts 8reb 2ast on 9-13 from the field and 4-7 from 3 including 18pts in the third quarter! Hauser added 26pts 5reb 6ast as well. Those 3 guys were unstoppable tonight which made this win a little more fun. The Celtics ended the season 57-25 and became just the second team in NBA history to rank top 2 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. The other team to do it was the Warriors when they had, arguably, the greatest team in NBA History. With that, there are a lot of guys that are potentially claiming end of season accolades. Tatum should be a lock for an All NBA team and JB should absolutely be up there too. Then you've got Brogdon as the leading candidate for 6th Man of the Year, rightfully so, as Quickley has had his best games as a starter for the Knicks. Smart, White, Horford, JB and Tatum have all made serious cases for an All Defense team as well. I know there are some people who are going to say none of this matters and all we should focus on is the Finals win and, while that is true, I also think it is important to celebrate the little things on the journey. With the playoff starting next weekend, It's also important to talk about playoff rotations! Obviously, we know what we're getting from our top 7 guys (Tatum, JB, White, Smart, Horford, Brogdon and Timelord) but it's once we get to the end of the bench guys where it gets harder to find time for. Grant and Hauser will likely be switching for that 8th spot depending on matchups. Hauser will likely be a good candidate for the Miami series (assuming they beat Atlanta lol) and after that, the size of both Philly and Milwaukee could be more Grant heavy. Past that, we've seen several moments of this year where Grant has complained too much or left his role and we saw Blake Griffin provide some very meaningful minutes so I also wouldn't be surprised to see him contribute 5 minutes every other game. We've already talked about 10 guys at this point and these last couple games have shown that we really have Muscala and Pritchard who we could rely on for good minutes as well. Muscala obviously serves as a great stretch 4 alternative that can play in lineups alongside Timelord if Horford gets in foul trouble as well. Pritchard is another guy who could serve as a Blake Griffin energy type player who can flat out shoot. People will want to complain about rotations once the time comes but no team in the NBA ever rolls out a 12 man rotation come playoff time and there are 12 legit guys that can provide minutes for this team so Joe has his work cut out for him! The Celtics blow out the Raptors 121-102 in a game run by the Celtics role players. Hauser probably played his best NBA game finishing with 26pts on 10-16 from the field and 6-12 from deep. Obviously we are used to the 3pt shooting Hauser but we also got to see him flex on the crowd with 3 thunderous dunks in this one. Pritchard, in his first game back, feasted on the Raptors matchup that he loves so much and went out and scored 22pts along with 4reb (2oreb) and 5ast as well. On the night that his shoes went on sale, Jayson Tatum goes out there and feasted at the rim scoring 21pts in just 20 minutes and was 7-7 from 2 including 3 And 1 plays at the rim. I loved his aggressiveness in this one. Derrick White continued to shine and while the scoring figures are low, he went out there and controlled the game with 10ast. Timelord was back to his super springy self adding in 8pts 9reb 2ast 2stl and 3blk and fortified this Celtics defense making things at the rim extremely hard for this Raptors team. Horford even stepped in with 3blks of his own and hit some big shots as well. On top of those guys, we also saw some really good minutes from Muscala and Blake Griffin. Muscala was 4-8 from the field with 11pts and 7reb and Blake continues to make every hustle play imaginable. This was a really fun game to watch as a C's fan. The ball and player movement was off the charts. They ended the night with 37ast on 45fgm on the night and it wasn't even a night where they shot the ball particularly well from 3 but they were hitting the Raptors with backdoor cuts all night which led to easy bucket after easy bucket. Defensively, these guys were on a string for most of the night getting hands into passing lanes and blocking the rim with Horford and Timelord. Very impressive game overall for these guys. The standings are now locked and the Celtics will go on to face the winner of the 7&8 matchup which is going to be Atlanta and Miami. It's okay to cheer for Atlanta because Miami may be more physical but either way, as a team with championship aspirations, you should never be scared of a first round matchup. The Celtics beat the Raptors 97-93 and officially lock up the 2 seed with 2 games remaining in the regular season. We played this one with Tatum, Smart and Horford and saw a starting lineup with Hauser and Muscala in it and still pulled off the victory. The White & Brogdon tandem was at it again in this one. Brogdon led the way with 29pts alongside 5reb and 3ast and hit 2 clutch FTs to ice the game tonight but was hitting big bucket after big bucket. White was also really impressive despite a tough shooting night but he added in 17pts 4reb 2ast 2stl and a block. Both of these guys continue to step up in big spots and is going to make a huge difference in this playoff run we are about to watch. With Tatum out tonight, I was expecting JB to really step up and have a big game and while the shooting splits might not look impressive, I think he still played within the rhythm of the game and wasn't reverting to iso ball at all in this one. He was still super aggressive getting to the rim and getting to his mid range spot. I think we saw some really good minutes from Muscala as well in this. Him and Brogdon were really the only 2 players on the team that shot the 3 well. Muscala ended the night with 12pts 6reb and was 3-5 from 3 and had a pretty solid game on both sides of the ball. Hauser shot horribly in this one (1-8 from 3) but still managed to lead the team with a +11 and funny enough, it was because of his playmaking and defense. He ended the night with 4ast 2stl and a block. The Celtics really struggled to shoot in this one. they shot 42% from the field and just 29% from 3 and still managed to pull this one off. It wasn't a perfect game but it was a win that locked up the 2 seed for us. With 2 games left in the regular season, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a very lengthy injury report next game and then watch the Celtics come back full strength during our last game but play limited minutes since these games don't matter. The Celtics fall to the 76ers 103-101 in a game with no JB and no Timelord and Embiid needed 50pts to pull it off. This is exactly why I am not worried about Philly come playoff time. Our game plan against Phill is very simple. Let Embiid cook and shut everyone else down. We held Harden to just 20pts and besides them, Tucker was the only one who had double digit pts with 11. The issue tonight wasn't the defense but the offense. With no JB, I was fully excpecting Tatum to step up and score 30+ but that was simply not the case tonight. He scored just 19pts on 7-20 from the field and 2-8 from 3 while also missing 2 of his 5 FTs. On top of his poor shooting night, his shot selection was bad in this one as well reverting back to a lot of iso ball in moments where the Celtics offense looked great. White and Brogdon were spectacular once again in this one. White was clearly the alpha tonight scoring 26pts to go alongside 7reb 4ast and 2 blks on 50/40/100 shooting splits. He also had 15 of his 26pts in the 4th quarter so stepped up when it mattered most. Brogdon also played really well adding 18pts 4reb 3ast. Outside of them, I think Grant played a solid game up until his technical giving Harden to extend the lead to 7 with 2:00 left but then he made up for it with a huge offensive foul drawn on Embiid giving the Celtics a chance to tie/win it with :02 left. Smart made a couple dumb plays but also added 17pts 4reb 4ast including a huge And 1 where he got his own missed FT that led to a huge White 3 making it 103-101. Some guys stepped up and some didn't but in a game where we played without JB and Timelord while also giving up 50pts to Embiid, only losing by 2 isn't the worst thing in the world. The Celtics are now 3GB the Bucks for the 1 seed and have a 2 game lead over Philly for the 2 seed with only 3 games left. The Celtics beat the Jazz 122-114 in another full team effort. Derrick White was the player of the game in the first half, Brogdon probably was in the second half and Tatum played great throughout. Derrick White had 15pts at halftime and was super efficient getting to the rim and then was slow in the second half. Brogdon was slow in the first half with only 4pts at half but he ended the game with 19pts 7ast including one of the best 4 possession swing we have seen in a long time. Right when the Jazz went on a run in the third to bring our lead down to 72-68, Brogdon goes out and hits back to back 3s, then drives and dishes to Grant for an open 3 and then hits another 3 of his own the next possession so 12pts in 4 possessions all because of Brogdon. Tatum was really good throughout this game though. He ended the night with 39pts 11reb 3ast 3stl and was super efficient from the field once again. He shot 12-17 from the field and 5-8 from 3 all while hitting 10-11 FTs. These last two games from Tatum have been MVP level performances. Outside of those 3 guys, Blake played really well in that starting role bringing a ton of energy to the court as well as adding 6pts 12reb and 5ast. His passing was off the charts in this one. Grant played a really solid game as well. He played the exact role we want him to be playing. Excellent defensively and shooting really well from the field. Smart was a little trigger happy in this one and JB was just off. It was not a great night for either of them but the Celtics pulled through it all for a big win getting within 1.5 games of the Bucks for the 1 seed and not quite but pretty much locked ourselves in a 1 or 2 seed now that we are 2.5 games up on Philly and also have the tiebreaker. The Celtics play the best game of basketball we have seen in years and blow out the Bucks 140-99. This game was over as soon as it started. the Celtics outscored the Bucks 34-26 in the first and then 41-21 in the second giving the Celtics a 28pt halftime lead. Then, to pound it in even more, the Celtics outscored the Bucks by 39-27 in the third and even 26-25 in the fourth despite sitting all of our stars. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown went OFF in this game combining for 70pts!!! JB came out of the gate firing with 17 first quarter pts and was putting on an absolute clinic. What I love about JBs game is that only 9 of his 30pts came from 3s. He was very aggressive getting downhill once again. Jayson Tatum scored 40pts in just 31min and was on fire from deep which is a nice change of pace. He shot 8-10 from 3 and also was 8-8 from the FT line. Both of these guys were super efficient and led this team to an incredible victory. This was truly a perfect game from the Celtics as a whole. The defensive game plan that Joe put together for guarding Giannis was perfect. There was a line of guys at the rim forcing Giannis to kick out to guys on the wing OR take a ridiculously hard shot all night long. He still ended up with 24pts but he was 11-27 from the field and outside of him, Middleton and Portis were the only ones in double figures. The defense in this one was top notch. Horford looked great hitting 4-6 from 3. Smart got back to his facilitating role I've been begging for and put up 10ast. Brogdon also played a huge role adding 14pts 4stl and 5ast. Timelord also looked great in this onewith 7pts 7reb (4oreb) and 4blk!!! This was a team effort and gave Joe the ability to rest the starters the entire 4th quarter before the second night of a back to back! Celtics are now just 2GB the Bucks for the #1 seed BUT we now have the tiebreaker. It is still a huge uphill battle with only 5 games left but there's still a chance! The Celtics got embarrassed by the Wizards 130-111. The Celtics fell down by as many as 23 with over 9:00 minutes to play in the 4th quarter and Joe just emptied the bench. The starters weren't hitting wide open shots or defending at all and pulling all the starters sparked something but the comeback was short lived. The bench got it down to 12 before the Wizards went on another big run to close out the game. Some people will complain about the Celtics taking too many 3s but I will say they were absolutely wide open for a large majority of them. There is a big difference between taking too many 3s and creating 3s and the Celtics created a ton of open 3s in this game but they just weren't falling. As poorly as the Celtics shot from 3 (11-44), that wasn't the only reason behind this loss. The Celtics were a revolving door at the rim giving the Wizards whatever they wanted. Porzingis torched us with 32pts 13reb and got whatever he wanted at the rim. The Celtics, for whatever reason, had Horford guarding Avdija while Smart, Brogdon or White had the matchup on Porzingis most of the night and Porzingis bullied himself to a good spot on the floor creating easy shots all night long. The Celtics are smarter than that but it didn't show in this one. After 3 straight blowout victories, I thought the time of us playing down to competition was over but here we are. The Celtics blowout the Spurs 137-93 in our 3rd straight complete domination. JB was as unstoppable as we've seen in a long time. He ended the night with 41pts 13reb and 3ast on 18-29 from the field and 2-10 from 3 meaning he was 16-19 from inside the arc. This was the picture perfect game from JB that ended in a standing ovation from the fans in Boston. While JB was truly unstoppable, this was a complete performance and a lot of others stepped up as well. Our 3 guard trio of Smart, White and Brogdon were great in this one. Smart was ejected in the third quarter after getting 2 technical but was playing a solid game prior to that. Brogdon was huge with 20pts and a team high 9ast. White continued his hot streak with 19pts alongside 8reb on a super efficient 7-11 from the field. Timelord put together another dominating effort with 11pts 8reb and 1blk in just 19 minutes. Horford was really solid with his 6pts 9reb and 4ast as well. Outside of our core rotation guys, we also saw solid minutes from Muscala who was 3-4 from deep and JD Davison even had some great garbage time minutes as well. This is very much a team we should beat but this is 3 straight games where the Celtics played a near perfect game and won by 20+ in all 3. The Celtics blow out the Pacers 120-95 making it 2 straight dominating complete game performances. Robert Williams was phenomenal tonight in his second game back from injury. He only had 4pts but he added 8reb 3stl and 3blks and was an instant energy boost for this team on the defensive side of the ball. We also saw both of the Jays go off in this one too. Jayson Tatum added 34pts and was super aggressive getting downhill and his shot selection was great tonight as well. There were still a couple of his superstar heat checks but overall, this was a much more balanced game for him. JB also contributed 27pts but it was also his passing that set him apart in this one. He only had 4ast in this one BUT he created 2 open 3pt shots because of his drive that he got a "hockey assist" and created a couple other opportunities where guys got fouled. Derrick White came up with another unbelievable performance adding 22pts and a team high 9ast on another super efficient 3pt shooting night. In a game where Brogdon missed, we even saw some good minutes from both Grant and Hauser. Grant added 12pts 6reb and Hauser contributed 9pts 5reb as well as a beautiful steal that led a White transition 3. This team was doing everything right. We outscored them in all 4 quarters and held them under 25 in the final 3. We shot the ball really well, moved the ball really well, rebounded really well and protected the rim really well. This is the Celtics playing basketball to their potential instead of down to their competition which a breath of fresh air as we near the end of the regular season. The Celtics destroyed the Kings 132-109 in a very balanced attack. This was a game where Derrick White completely dominated. He had 20pts 7reb and 11ast and was making all the right plays all night long. The only negative from his night was a lone turnover but even after that turnover, he sprinted back on defense and blocked Harrison Barnes in transition and turned that into a bucket on the other end for the Celtics. He was really good in this one but he wasn't alone. JB continued his hot stretch with 27pts 5reb 4ast on a super efficient 10-16 from the field and 4-7 from 3. Tatum still drove me crazy with his 2-7 shooting from 3 and 6-11 from the FT line but I will give him credit for being much more aggressive getting to the rim in this one. Tatum is not a very good 3pt shooter and I said this when he was named to the 3pt Shooting Contest but he is PHENOMENAL getting to the rim. He needs to focus on that part of his game much more often. This wasn't a perfect game overall but it was pretty close to it. The Celtics shot 40.9% from 3, had 33ast on 49fgm, only tuned the ball over 6 times, outrebounded them 43-42 and scored 21pts off their 14TOs. You can't really ask for much more but the Celtics even delivered more. They held the highest rated offense in NBA history to just 109 pts and matched their pace. The Celtics fall to the Jazz 118-117 in a nail biter. This is, once again, another game where the Celtics held a 19pts lead and watched it slip away as fast as it came. We out scored the Jazz 34-24 and were rolling. Started the 2nd quarter hot and built up that 19pt lead and then proceeded to get outscored 33-30 in the 2nd, 31-27 in the 3rd and 30-26 in the 4th. We lost 3 straight quarters and gave up 30pts in all 3 of them. The part of this game that is most frustrating is the fact that the Celtics offense looked great tonight. Tatum had another horrible game scoring just 15pts and missing 2 huge shots down the stretch but outside of him, the offense was great. We shot 43% from 3, had 30ast on 42fgm and only turned the ball over 8 times. You should win a game where you play like that every day of the week. The big reason we lost this game was because of offensive rebounding and defense. The Celtics gave up 17 offensive rebounds in this one that led to 20 second chance pts. The Celtics shot themselves in the foot. Obviously in a game with no Horford, Timelord or Smart you are going to regress defensively and from a rebounding perspective but there's no excuse for playing how they did on the defensive end. This team is filled of very capable defenders and tonight wasn't a good depiction of that. I will give Grant a lot of credit for a great game alongside our bench. Every single bench player ended the night with a positive +/- while every starter was a negative. The Celtics beat the Trail Blazers 126-112 in a pretty impressive win. The offense was buzzing tonight and the shot selection was much better. For the people out there seeing 42 3pt attempts, I will say that 90% of those 2s were created from penetration and kick outs so they were great shots. We weren't simply settling for 3s but creating those 3s. Tatum still went 2-11 from 3 so I would like to see that number go down a bit but even he was super aggressive getting to the rim and it shows as he was 16-18 from the FT Line. JB continued his "scorch the earth" stretch and added 27pts 6reb 5ast and 2stl on a super efficient 12-23 from the field and, like Tatum, most of his makes were at the rim. Al Horford led the way tonight with 10ast and was getting people involved left and right and Marcus Smart had, arguably, his best game since coming back from the injury. He ended tonight with 15pts on efficient shooting while also adding 6ast and 4stl including a huge strip on Damian Lillard while Portland was a big run that led to a JB transition bucket to go up 11 with 2:00 left. We saw some really good contributions off the bench as well from Blake, Kornet and Hauser. This wasn't a perfect win but it was definitely a good one. Dame went off for 25pts in the 4th quarter alone and made this game interesting for a bit but when Portland got it down to single digits, the Celtics responded with a punch to the throat which is exactly how you want a team to respond. The Celtics beat the Timberwolves 104-102 in a rollercoaster of a game. JB absolutely dominated this game from start to finish. He had 35pts 10reb including 15 of those pts coming int he 4th quarter. He was 12-24 from the field and 5-8 from 3 and couldn't be stopped. He was super aggressive getting downhill in this one and came up huge down the stretch in this win. Jayson Tatum had another off night shooting BUT was much more aggressive getting downhill and it resulted in him going 14-16 from the FT Line. With that being said, he was still 4-16 from the field and 0-8 from 3 so to say he struggled is an understatement. This was a game where the Celtics won because of JB and the defense. Holding this Timberwolves team who averages 115 to just 102 on 44% from the field and 33% from 3 which are both well below their team averages is impressive. Every single starter for the Celtics chipped in a steal with Tatum and Smart having 2 each. Then you have White and Horford with 2 blocks each and Tatum joining that party with one of his own. This was a really strong defensive game through and through. The Celtics still need to get out of the iso game which did plague them a bit in this one but most of the reason we ended the game with just 20ast is actually because the Celtics just shot soo poorly (40% from the field and 30% from 3) and not necessarily because of the iso ball. Guys just weren't hitting shots tonight which makes this win even more impressive. The Celtics have just 12 games left in the regular season and have a lot of issues to address come playoff time. The Celtics fall to the Rockets 111-109 in another embarrassing game. JB came out and was simply unstoppable in this game. He scored 43pts on 16-25 (64%) from the field and 4-10 (40%) from 3 and, as good as he was all game, went off for 17pts in the third quarter. Jayson Tatum on the other hand was absolutely brutal in this game. He had 22pts and 4TOs on 8-22 (36%) from the field and 2-10 (20%) from 3. After a horrible first half, Tatum comes out and puts up 11pts on 5-7 from the field with both of his misses coming from 3. He was aggressive getting downhill and it looked like it may have been a tipping point. It was not. The 4th quarter came and he went into his shell missing all 3 of his shot attempts including the potential game tying basket at the buzzer. Outside of JB, Malcolm Brogdon really did play excellent in this one with 20pts along with a couple of huge plays on both sides of the ball down the stretch. Besides JB and Brogdon, nobody put together a good performance. In fact, if you take their numbers out of the 3pt shooting (7-15 combined for 46%) the Celtics shot 20% from beyond the arc. They only had 19ast on 39 makes which is also a huge issue with tonight's game. The Celtics truly got outplayed in this one. We were outrebounded by 10, gave up 15oreb and allowed 22pts off our 14TOs. This was truly a bad showing and as the postseason nears, one would hope the Celtics would start playing their best basketball of the season but they seem to be moving backwards. The Celtics rolled the Hawks 134-125 in a game where the Celtics played as well as you could ask offensively but just as bad defensively. We saw Tatum put together a solid overall performance with 34pts 15reb and 6ast but the shot selection left a little to be desired. He ended the night 5-14 from 3 which I think is far too many 3pt attempts from 1 person. Outside of the shot selection, he had a really solid game. JB was spectacular in this one scoring 24pts alongside 5reb and a team high (tied with White) 7ast. This was one of the best games we have seen from him as far as rim reads goes. He was super aggressive tonight cutting constantly, creating easy baskets and finding guys for wide open shots after his drives. He didn't shoot well from 3 (1-5) but didn't seek that shot very much. Outside of the Jays, White and Brogdon both chipped in 18pts and kept the ball flying around all night. We also saw Sam Hauser hit 4-5 from beyond the arc and Blake Griffin contribute 8pts 5reb 1ast 1stl 1blk in his 15 minutes and provide a huge spark off the bench. Horford, while the stat line might not show it, played really well tonight too. He hit a huge 3 down the stretch countering a Hawks run and then had a huge block on Johnson that led to a Brogdon transition layup to go up 8 so a huge 4pt swing late in the game. Overall, the Celtics played really well offensively, shooting 47% from 3 and collecting 35ast on 52fgm. This wasn't a game where they were chucking up 3s. They were creating 3s and that is when they are at their best. Their interior defense was a mess tonight which led to 72pts in the paint for the Hawks as well as 13oreb so there are still quite a few things to clean up but good overall win for the Celtics! The Celtics beat Portland 115-93 and finally give us fans a night off from having a heart attack. The Celtics had a double digit lead most of this game and finally closed it out giving our starters (minus White) the entire 4th quarter to rest. Tatum looked great in this one with 30pts and 7reb on 6-10 from 3 so it was good to finally see him hitting these 3s. White stepped up big in this one with 21pts 5reb and 7ast including a couple big baskets in that 4th quarter to push the Celtics lead back up to 19 after the Trail Blazers got it down to 14. Horford looked 10 years younger once again having a big night with 17pts 6reb 5ast on a super efficient 7-11 from the field. JB and Brogdon weren't necessarily on their game tonight but Brogdon was especially bad in this one. He ended the night with just 5pts on 2-13 from the field including 1-7 from 3. He missed 4 layups and got a 5th one blocked and had a couple of wide open 3s that were nowhere close. He did contribute 9reb but it was definitely a tough night overall for him. This was a much needed win to get the Celtics back on track mentally as well following that 3 game stretch of blowing double digit leads. The Celtics improve to 46-21 and are now 2GB the Bucks for the 1seed and have a 2 game lead over Philly as well. They now go on to a 6 game road trip against a pretty easy schedule so hopefully the Celtics can go on a nice little run here leading up to our game against Milwaukee which will determine a lot seedings wise. The Celtics fall to the Cavs 118-114 and blow their third straight double digit lead in this one. The Celtics played 3 quarters of brilliant basketball. We outscored the Cavs in all of the first 3 quarters and had a 14pt lead going into the 4th. The Celtics built this lead with excellent 3pt shooting and an unbelievable night from JB (32pts 14reb and 9ast) and Malcolm Brogdon (24pts 4reb 5ast). The ball was flying around and guys were cutting creating open shots. On top of that, the Celtics were playing hard on the defensive end forcing a ton of turnovers that led to easy opportunities. After going into 2OT yesterday the Celtics looked exhausted going into this 4th quarter and was evident as most of their shots came up short. I'm not using that as an excuse because it is inexcusable to lose a 14pt lead in a 4th quarter. The ball stopped moving the way it was in the beginning and after out 13-26 start from 3, we ended the night 16-48 so from the 3rd quarter on we shot just 13% from 3. With all of that being said, the Celtics had the ball with 6 seconds left in a tied game and Pritchard flew up the floor and Grant Williams gets fouled on the putback attempt. He had an opportunity to win the game by hitting just 1 FT and missed both of them forcing an OT and at that point the Celtics were toast. They made just 1 FG the entire OT which was JB splitting a crazy double team and the only other pts were 3 FTs from JB. The Celtics fall to the Knicks 131-129 in 2OT on the front end of a back to back... No Brogdon or Timelord in this game and we saw Hauser and Muscala play limited minutes because of their inability to hit shots. They combined to shoot 2-7 from 3 in 32 minutes and forced Joe to rely very heavily on the starting 5. We saw Tatum play 49 minutes and JB play 47 and are expected to bounce back tomorrow against a tough Cavs team. This game was certainly exciting and we saw stretches of great basketball but we also saw the Celtics blow another double digit lead. As well as Tatum played at times, his shot selection was atrocious once again. He ended the night with 40pts 11reb and 6ast but he was 12-30 from the field and 6-17 from 3!!! When he is aggressive, the Celtics play their best basketball and we didn't see that for most of the night. JB hit a couple of huge shots including the massive And 1 to tie the game at the end of regulation and was much more consistent getting downhill. Horford showed that he ages like fine wine adding in 20pts on 6-10 from 3 in one of his better performances of the year. Grant stepped up and played great in this one. The shots weren't falling for him as he was only 1-5 from 3 but he was 4-4 from the FT line including some clutch ones in OT and his defense was excellent in this one but all of those performances went wasted in a tough loss. The Celtics lost to the new look Nets 115-105 in a game where they once led by as many as 28pts!!! The Celtics came out firing early in this one and led 37-15 after the first and were doing everything right. They were getting downhill, getting to the FT line, hitting their 3s and defending at a very high level. Then everything changed and we saw the intensity slip on the defensive end, the pace slowed down and we saw more iso ball. We were outscored by 13 in the 2nd quarter, 14 in the 3rd quarter and 5 in the 4th quarter... Obviously losing a 28pt lead is frustrating but the thing that frustrates me the most is the fact that we still outplayed them in several aspects of today's game. We shot a higher % from the field, we outrebounded them, had more assists, more fastbreak pts and way more pts in the paint and we still lost. The 3pt shooting killed us but the play of Jayson Tatum was the real killer. He just seemed disinterested in this game which is odd considering it was his birthday. He shot 0-8 from 3 today and had 4 boneheaded turnovers. If you take out his 0-8 from 3, the Celtics shot 40% which will win you a lot of games in the NBA but Tatum's shot selection was horrible in this one. JB (35pts 5reb 4ast 3stl) and Derrick Whites (16pts 4reb 3ast) were the only real bright spots in todays game. The Celtics cruise past the Cavs 117-113 and I know that doesn't seem like "cruising past" but this game was not as close as the final score. Celtics were up by 20 late in that fourth quarter and there certainly was a massive collapse because guys reverted to iso ball and they slowed the pace which you cannot do against this Cavs defense. They are one of the best halfcourt defenses in the league with Allen and Mobley and the Celtics were at their best tonight when they dictated the pace and it showed with out 16 fast break pts. Tatum finally caught his post all star break hot streak after a tough start but he ended this one with 41pts 11reb and 8ast after starting the game 1-4 from the field and only 2pts in the first quarter. He caught fire and never cooled down. Speaking of never cooling down, Al Horford went off for 23pts 11reb on 6-8 from 3 and was hitting big shots all night long. We also saw Timelord look like Timelord again. This was probably the best we have seen him look in quite some time. He ended the night with 11pts 11reb 1stl and 2blk and was a force down low. We're used to seeing our bench step up and perform at such a high level but tonight was a game run by the starters and despite JB struggling from the field, the starters combined for 105pts. The Celtics fall to the Knicks 109-94 and are officially behind the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Standings percentage points wise. This was an ugly game through and through. The Celtics shot an abysmal 9-42 (21%) from 3 and refused to take it hard to the rack drawing free throws instead. The Knicks shot 34 free throws compared to our 14. On a night where JB was out, one would expect for Tatum to step up but that didn't happen either. Tatum scored just 14pts on 6-18 from the field and 1-9 from 3. He is in a serious funk coming off of the All Star Break. In his last 3 games, he has shot a combined 36% from the field and 24% from 3. He needs to get his mojo back and he needs to do it quick. We did see solid performances from Brogdon and Horford and we saw sparks of brilliance from Smart at times but it just wasn't enough. This isn't a game that should have fans freaking out because it was an anomaly but it certainly wasn't a fun one to watch. This was one of the few games where I was really upset with rotations. With the Celtics missing so many 3s, you are forced to EITHER stop shooting 3s and start getting to the rim OR switch up your personnel and Joe did neither. This would've been a good game to get Muscala more minutes (he didn't check in till midway through third and actually played pretty well) and Pritchard some time but that didn't pan out. The Celtics beat the 76ers 110-107 after a clutch 3 from Tatum off of a beautiful ATO from Mazzulla. Tatum struggled for most of this game but hit the big shot when it mattered most. Despite Tatum's struggles, we were able to win this game because everyone stepped up. JB was phenomenal in this one scoring 26 including 10 in that 4th quarter and just kept hitting big shot after big shot. Al Horford single handedly brought the Celtics on a 9-0 run in the third quarter when we were down 15 and then hit another 3 to make it 12pts in that quarter. Derrick White continued balling at a high level with his 18 and Timelord even added in 14pts and was much more aggressive getting shots up at the rim instead of passing out for a 3. The formula for beating Philly has been pretty simple. Let Embiid get his and shut down everyone else and that is exactly what we did. Harden was fine in this one and Harris was great in the first quarter but after that we stopped him completely and nobody else hurt us. This formula has set us up for win after win against Philly which is beautiful to see. One of the major things that jumped out to me in this one was the rotation. We saw Joe play just 9 guys and Hauser was one of them but he only played 1:57 so we essentially saw an 8 man rotation in this one. This could be indicative of the playoff rotation we are going to see. Either way, big win for the Celtics as they remain the best team in the NBA! The Celtics beat the Pacers 142-138 in OT and improve to 43-17 on the year! This was a fun one to watch because it was so back and forth but it was too close for comfort over a bad Pacers team. We saw the return of our preferred starting 5 and against a Pacers team that runs a very small lineup, it wasn't ideal. I will give credit to Joe for adapting and going smaller while limiting Horford to just 34min and Timelord to just 26 and letting guys like Brogdon and White get some much deserved time. Offensively, this game was great for the Celtics. The ball movement was great and the offensive rebounding was even better. The Celtics had the opportunity to win this game with 2:15 left as they were up 4 but then Tatum got crossed from Haliburton who hit an easy 3 and then you saw JB miss 2 of 3 FTs keeping only a 2pt lead. Then Tatum goes and misses a layup and turns the ball over in back to back possessions and then we see another JB turnover. The Celtics should've had this one wrapped up but let it slip away. Fortunately they pulled it off in OT thanks in large part to 7 straight pts from Smart and a huge OREB that led to a Tatum putback to ice the game. The Celtics blow out the Pistons 127-109 and we finally saw the return of Marcus Smart! Smart may have missed the last 11 games but he didn't miss a beat. He came out as the best version of himself with 9pts 7reb 6ast and 6stl!!! Defensively, he was an absolute monster in this one and offensively he only took 6 shots with 2 of them being wide open layups after a steal lol. This was the perfect Smart game. We also got to see our other 2 PGs in Brogdon and White play excellent and contribute 6ast apiece. It is an absolute luxury to have 3 legit starting caliber PGs on your team that can go out and create offense for other. As good as those 3 were, Jayson Tatum stole the show in the third quarter with a career high 24pts in an overall 38pt 9reb 7ast night. He was excellent in this one and, besides the last 2 minutes when he was really searching for that 40pt night, he played within the flow of the offense and wasn't forcing anything. The Celtics really won this game because of the defensive effort for 3 of the 4 quarters (3rd quarter was horrible) and the 3pt shooting throughout. The Celtics continued their hot shooting stretch tonight hitting on 21 of 45 3pt attempts (46.7%) and are slowly getting their 3pt% back up after a tough stretch. This was a fun way to head into the All Star Break and with today's win, the Celtics secured the best record in the NBA heading into the break! The Boston Celtics fall to the Bucks 131-125 in OT. They played this game with no Smart, JB, Tatum, or Al and only played Timelord 13 minutes as they were monitoring his minutes. Most people would automatically write this game off as a loss but the Celtics battled showing the entire NBA what we have been seeing all year and that is our depth is going to be a killer this year. We saw Derrick White continue his torrid stretch of destroying teams but we saw everyone else step up as well. Muscala has already scored twice the amount of points that Justin Jackson scored for us in just 3 games. Brogdon was big at times in this one. Hauser hit a 35ft 3 in Middleton's face to force OT and we saw Blake and Grant play phenomenally on the defensive end. This was the most fun I have ever had watching the Celtics lose. We saw excellent ball movement and timely doubles forcing tough shots or sending Giannis to the FT line and it worked time and time again in this one. The hospital Celtics have no business keeping up with a fully healthy Bucks team but we did and it was incredible to watch. We still have a .5 game lead in the Eastern Conference but there's still a lot of time left. Time to handle business in Detroit and get healthy over the All Star Break. The Celtics beat the Grizzlies 119-109 on Super Bowl Sunday. We played this one without JB, Smart or Brogdon and similar to last game, Derrick White stepped up big with another double double. This time 23pts and 10ast and was a huge key to the Celtics win because of that much needed playmaking. Sam Hauser continues an impressive hot streak with 20pts on 6-11 from 3 and is really looking like early season Hauser once again which is amazing to see. This was very much a team win as we saw 8 guys all in double digits and only 9 guys played in this one. Once again, Mike Muscala is showing Celtics fans that he can fit in seamlessly into this offense and contributed 10pts and 5reb in 17 minutes. This was the perfect pickup at the deadline for Justin Jackson, who, again wouldn't find himself on the floor at all in 99% of the games we play and 2 second round picks! Overall, this was a fun one to watch. Ja Morant can be must watch TV at times with his high flying tendencies but it was the Celtics who walked away with the win. This one came down to 3s and the Celtics outscored the Grizzlies by 27pts from beyond the arc with their impressive 21-51 (41%) shooting. Everybody contributed on that end including Pritchard who scored 12pts on 4-7 from 3. The only one that really struggled from beyond the arc was Jayson Tatum who was 1-8 from 3 on the night but he really struggled offensively in general. The Celtics beat the Hornets 127-116 in an offensive masterclass led by Derrick White. Derrick White had a regular season career high 33pts alongside his 10ast 1stl and 3blks!!! Derrick White came out of the gates scorching hot scoring 26pts at halftime on 9-11 from the field and 7-9 from 3 and simply couldn't miss. During the second half, the Hornets keyed in on him defensively and he adjusted and had 7 of his 10 assists in the second half. This was a masterclass. This was also another super impressive performance from our MVP Candidate Jayson Tatum who ended the game with 41pts on very efficient shooting as well. As good as both of those were, a lot of eyes were locked in on newly acquired big man Mike Muscala who had an excellent debut with the team. Despite not having any practices or film sessions with this team, he went out there and played 16 minutes and contributed 12pts 1reb and 2ast on 4-8 shooting from 3. This was a very impressive debut and a couple things stood out to me. The first, and most of us already knew this was going to be the case but this dude can flat out shoot, Second, at 6'11", this dude can and will run the floor on every possession and that led to a couple of great looks. Third, for not being acclimated to this group whatsoever, he seemed like a pretty seamless fit on both sides of the ball. Overall, very impressed with his debut. This is a good win over a pretty bad Hornets team but this one had trap game written all over it and the Celtics came out firing which is great to see.
