Many view the fact that they are here, experiencing the world, as something insanely improbable... but what if it were instead entirely inevitable? The philosopher Arnold Zuboff walks us through a mind-bending argument, which he calls universalism (aka open individualism), where the improbability of your existence vanishes. It doesn't matter which sperm met which egg, or how your ancestors got together, or how anything at all in the past unfolded, because wherever there is first-person experience, there is the same “I." Zuboff's new book "Finding Myself: Beyond the False Boundaries of Personal Identity" features a foreword by Thomas Nagel (author of “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?”), who says that many will view the claim as “incredible, even outrageous” — but says it is too well argued to be ignored and an "important contribution." We discuss why Zuboff sees universalism as resolving many of the core quandaries of consciousness that are puzzled over, and why he's entirely certain it's the right view. Other topics include: how universalism ties into views of a multiverse and the anthropic principle; how it ties into ideas of religion and a higher power, and more. If you've ever lain awake at night wrestling with the sheer weirdness of being alive at all, you'll want to listen to this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

One reason many scientists reject evolution is that it's impossible to explain even the simplest of the incredible designs we find in creation as the work of a mindless, impersonal force. Imagine the challenge of explaining the many specialized features of the honeybee as the work of no one!The honeybee has compound eyes that enable it to navigate by the sun even on cloudy days because it has a built-in polarized light filter. The honeybee's antennae contain both their sense of smell and sense of touch. For this reason, they must be carefully cleaned. So the honeybees have special grooves in their front legs that are perfectly designed to clean them. The honeybees also have hairs on their body to collect pollen and baskets on their rear legs to carry it. And they have special glands for producing, shaping and cleaning off wax. When one returns home with news of a good pollen source, the honeybee has a language that it can use to tell the others about it!Not only is the honeybee a huge collection of special features united together, but they also live in a hive that unites thousands of individuals so that they all work together like a single organism! It simply goes against everything we know from science to suppose that millions of years of unplanned accidents could design and build the honeybee!Psalm 113:5-6"Who is the LORD our God, Who dwells on high, Who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in the heavens and in the earth?"Prayer: I thank You, Lord, that some who are called by Your Name work in the sciences. I ask You to protect them, make them bold in their witness to the truth. I know that for You, Who so wondrously made the honeybee, this is an easy task if Your people are willing to serve You above all things. Amen. The first "January Lion" of 2026 has arrived. Join Mark Longo and Carley Garner of DeCarley Trading as they kick off the new year with a high-octane look at the futures options landscape. From the aftermath of a historic 2025 to the geopolitical shocks of the first week of January, this episode breaks down why the "old rules" of the commodity markets are being rewritten. In This Episode: The 2025 Retrospective: A look back at a "once-in-50-year" event in the metals complex. Carley provides a candid "humbling" on the massive surge in gold and silver, and why 2025 was the year of the devoted trend follower. The Silver Beast: Silver dominated last year with a 140%+ gain. Carley and Mark discuss the "Reverse 2020" effect, the impact of triple-leveraged ETFs, and why trading Silver options right now requires nerves of steel and a massive margin account. Movers & Shakers: * The Light Side: A continuation of the metals rally (Silver, Platinum, Palladium) and a surprising 5% YTD surge in the Russell 2000 ($RUT). The Dark Side: Energy struggles as WTI and Brent lead the losers, while Natural Gas faces a "trap door" at the $3.60 pivot. Equity Index Analysis: Why the "Mag 7" dominance is yielding to a Small-Cap catch-up play in the Russell. Plus, a strategy for "tail-risk nibbling" using deep out-of-the-money March and June puts. Energy & Geopolitics: The team breaks down the "Maduro effect" and why Venezuela's supply won't be a quick fix for the crude markets. Carley explores the possibility of a capitulation move in oil toward the low $40s. Viewer Q&A: The blurring lines between "trading" and "betting" as CME and FanDuel move closer together. Market Volatility Snapshot (CVOL) Treasury Yield Vol: Pinning the needle at 78.9 (High for the week). Energy CVOL: Popping to 60.6 as geopolitical tensions rise. Metals CVOL: Easing slightly to 31.0 despite massive moves in the underlying.

Carolina Confidential is back, and Gerrell Wheeler is still heated after the Panthers' gut-punch 20–17 loss to the Saints on Sunday—complete with a season sweep by a New Orleans team playing spoiler. Gerrell breaks down how Carolina let a must-win slip away (penalties everywhere, the late hit that everyone's talking about, and missed chances long before that final drive), plus the frustrating reality of a true .500 team that looks playoff-ready one week and completely lost the next. Now the math is simple: the Panthers have made life harder, but the path is still there—beat the Buccaneers twice, handle business, and punch a ticket to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
Michael Iavarone's done what most horse people only dream about, he's won the Kentucky Derby. He's been in this game at the highest level, from Big Brown taking him to the presipice of racing to many G1 wins, but he didn't grow up in it. He came from a working-class family, started out getting crushed at the betting windows, and somehow figured out how to buy the right horses at the right time. This one's full of wild stories, buying million-dollar horses days before a race, flying around the world to race in Hong Kong and Dubai, and the highs and heartbreaks that come with it. But what stuck with me most is how much Michael still loves the game. Even after all the pressure, all the wins, all the money spent, he's still out there watching morning works like it's the best part of his day. Key Topics we discussed: Why Michael only buys horses that have already raced, and how that's helped him win bigThe story behind Big Brown and how it felt to win two legs of the Triple CrownWhat it's like to wire a million dollars for a horse just days before the Breeders' CupWhy elite horses have to be mentally tough, not just talentedHow horse racing pulled him back in after he stepped awayFollow Michael on Instagram: @michael.iavaroneSubscribe and follow Horse People Podcast for more cross discipline content and stories from equestrians all around the world. @horsepeoplepodcast

We also check in with Maine Democratic primary voters on their U.S. Senate race, which is shaping up to be one of the biggest proxy wars in the Democratic Party in 2026 and is telling us a lot about what Democrats are more willing to tolerate from candidates, as long as they fight. To what extent does the course of history turn on the force of individual personalities? It's a question that looms large when examining the unlikely alliance forged between Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union that ultimately triumphed over the Axis powers in the Second World War. Danny Bird speaks with author Tim Bouverie to explore the complex, often uneasy rapport between Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt and Josef Stalin. Tim delves into the secrets, suspicions and towering ambitions that defined this remarkable chapter in wartime diplomacy, revealing how the fragile unity among these three leaders not only shaped the path to victory but also laid the uneasy foundations of the postwar world order.
