Continuing with our theme of Wilderness Medicine in Ultra-Endurance Events, we are joined by Steph Gaskell, Sports Dietician and Researcher at Monash University, to focus on the sports science and self- management / practicalities of fueling for the long run. Steph takes Doc and Goose through fueling for an Ultra, characterizing the event (the goal) and common pitfalls, importance of “training the gut”. She also takes a deep dive into her area of research; Exercise Induced Gastrointestinal Syndrome “Runner's gut”, and the current thinking around mechanistic pathways, and how to work out for the individual athlete strategies to mitigate common problems. Taking lessons from experiences, both positive and negative, is key to growth. In this Episode Kellie Wilkie explores what she learned as a competitive swimmer, and junior physio and how that helped shape the way she wished to practice. Kellie has gone on to establish herself as a world leading physio for rowers, ribs and lower backs. We also explore what tractor drivers taught her about back management, and what astronauts taught her about working in high functioning teams. Kellie was a National Team Physio through the 2008-2016 cycles for the Australian Rowing Team. She is the owner of a 20 year practice in Hobart (BodySystem) and more recently has teamed up with long time colleague Dr Larissa Trease to create development and learning material for helping young rowers grow into healthy & fit older rowers.T Links: GRowingBodies: https://growingbodies.blog/ LeoTraining Episode: https://www.leotraining.io/kellie-wilkie-rib-stress-injuries-in-rowing/ Wilkie K, Trease L & Wallis M. In this episode we take a deep dive into a seminal study recently published focusing on the injury and illnesses which most contributed to training missed by athletes on the Australian Rowing Team during the London and Rio Olympic Games. This is a must read overview for coaches, athletes and service team members working in Rowing, but also other endurance activities and indeed all sports. Dr Lari openly discusses the study design, the demographic, and the key injury and illness factors which lead to missed training by some of the most elite athletes in the world. Dr Lari is a Sport & Exercise Physician and has worked in this specialist field for more than 10 years. Dr Lari was the Chief Medical Officer to Rowing Australia for the Rio Olympic Games and has worked as an Australian Team Doctor across a range of other sport settings including the Sochi Winter Olympics, Beijing Paralympics and the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games. Episode 2: Reloading Athletes (Return to Training) It is well accepted that returning athlete to full training loads following any kind of break can come with an increased risk of injury or illness. The need to manage this effectively has come into sharp focus during the COVID-19 crisis. In May 2020 the AIS released a revision of its position statement on this topic, with Rod on of the key contributors to this work. In this episode Alice and Bill quiz Rod on the foundations of the position statement, what it may mean for coaches, support staff and athletes, and how it may be applied.
