What do ocean rowing, flood modelling and insurance innovation have in common? More than you might think. In this episode, Matthew Grant is joined by Harry Vardigans, Head of Insurance at Fathom, for a conversation that spans Atlantic Ocean rowing, catastrophe modelling and the evolving nature of risk in insurance. Later this year, Harry will join three teammates in an attempt to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, travelling from the Canary Islands to Antigua in a nine-metre boat. What starts as a discussion about one of the world's toughest endurance challenges quickly becomes a fascinating exploration of how individuals and organisations prepare for uncertainty, manage risk and make decisions in complex environments. Drawing on both his upcoming expedition and his work helping insurers better understand flood risk, Harry reflects on the parallels between navigating an ocean crossing and navigating today's insurance market. From weather forecasting and route optimisation to insurance availability and regulatory change, the conversation highlights how better data and improved modelling can transform previously uninsurable risks into manageable opportunities. In this conversation, Harry shares: What it takes to prepare for a 3,000-mile Atlantic rowing race The practical realities of managing risk in one of the world's most demanding endurance challenges How weather forecasting and climate intelligence influence decision-making at sea Why ocean rowing has become a more insurable risk over time The role regulation plays in creating new insurance opportunities How Fathom and Swiss Re are combining expertise to advance flood modelling capabilities Why flood risk assessment has changed significantly over the last five years The benefits of maintaining a consistent global approach to catastrophe modelling Lessons from scaling a specialist insurtech business in a competitive market How the philosophy of continuous improvement can apply to both sport and business Why ambitious projects often begin with simply committing to the first step Follow Harry's Atlantic crossing Harry and his crew, Rogue Wave, will be sharing updates as they prepare for and complete their Atlantic crossing. Instagram: @rogue_wave2026 LinkedIn: Rogue Wave Atlantic Row 2026 YouTube: Rogue Wave Vlog Episode 1 – Introductions The team is also raising money for two charities, The HALO Trust and the Cocktower Foundation, with donation links available through their social channels. Harry's recommendation Harry recommends Will It Make The Boat Go Faster? by Ben Hunt-Davis and Harriet Beveridge. The book explores how a relentless focus on actions that directly contribute to your goal can drive exceptional results, a philosophy that has shaped both his approach to business and his preparation for crossing the Atlantic. The Bears are into a wild card matchup with division rivals, the Packers. The Giants have confounded Corey's hopes yet again by being not quite bad enough to secure the first pick in the next NFL draft, and Canada go down 6-4 to Czechia in the World Junior Hockey Championships. In this Episode: Slow Down to Go Faster with Ralph Simone Episode Summary: In this episode, Mark and Theron sit down with Ralph Simone, a founding partner of Emergent and a veteran in leadership and organizational development with over 40 years of experience. Ralph breaks down his definition of leadership, "influencing and inspiring purposeful action" and discusses why the most effective way to speed up your results is actually to slow down your process. From the martial arts wisdom of Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee to practical habits for "Success Planning," Ralph shares actionable strategies to help you live and lead with intention. Key Takeaways: The Definition of Leadership: Why leadership isn't just about authority, but about the ability to influence purposeful action and remain open to learning. Vulnerability is Strength: Why the best leaders (and coaching clients) are those willing to say "I don't know" and be vulnerable enough to learn. Success Planning: Ralph's 35-year habit of weekly planning to move from being "reactive" to "proactive." Read for Application, Not Completion: A unique approach to reading books where you stop once you find an actionable idea, rather than grinding to the end of the book. The "Slow Down to Go Faster" Philosophy: The story of how advice from Chuck Norris to Bruce Lee inspired Ralph's book title, and how strategic pauses can skyrocket your productivity. 3 Immediate Actions: Create "White Space": Stop scheduling back-to-back meetings. Build in 5–10-minute buffers to breathe, reset, and set an intention for the next task. Audit Your Learning Style: Determine if you are a reader, a listener, or a doer, and curate your education (books vs. podcasts vs. travel) to match that style. The Weekly Success Plan: Dedicate time on the weekend to map out your "Big Rocks" for the next 2-3 weeks, rather than just filling your schedule with immediate tasks. When Formula 1 drivers want to go faster, they study squiggly lines on a screen. This is F1 data, showing how drivers accelerate, brake, steer and more. Hidden in the squiggles are the secrets of speed. Tom Stallard, Race Engineer to Oscar Piastri at McLaren, and former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer join Christian Hewgill to decode F1 data. Tom answers your questions on what data is recorded, how it is fed back to the teams by hundreds of sensors on each car, and how engineers analyse thousands of pieces of information. Jolyon explains how F1 drivers study their own data to find improvements, what they can learn from looking at their team mates and rivals' data, and the data drivers need to know during qualifying and races. Let's talk about letting go and doing it way faster. If you're anything like me and my clients, letting go can feel emotionally heavy and unnecessarily hard. But what if it didn't have to be? In this episode, I'm walking you through the three-step decision-making framework that came straight out of a recent Organized Life Academy coaching call. This framework will help you change the way you think about your stuff. Whether it's physical clutter, digital overwhelm, or outdated business ideas, this process helps you finally make decisions (and stop circling around them for months). I'll also share details about a one-time-only secret-room organizing event you're invited to. It's part workshop, part BTS (behind the scenes) peek at me decluttering a room that's gotten completely out of hand (again). ➡️ Register for the workshop on October 17, 2025, at https://simplysquaredaway.com/secret. If you want to see the organizing steps in action and how I actually make decisions in real life, don't miss this! What you'll learn in this episode: Why letting go actually gets easier when you do this first The simple rule one client uses to decide what ideas to keep or let go of. How to shift your mindset after making a decision so you don't regret it later What clutter really is (spoiler: it's not what you think) A blunt but freeing perspective on business offers, clothes, and all the “what if I need it later?” items Exactly how I'm prepping for my second round of decluttering in my infamous “secret room” For the full transcript, notes, links, and more, go to: https://simplysquaredaway.com/133

The 411 on Ageism & How To End It Faster I Janine Vanderburg For the life of me, given the choice between a strong, more profitable business and letting go of the back-assward stigma around age, the logic is clear. But is it? Like me, Janine Vanderburg isn't shy about why the math isn't mathing the business reasons why it's about impact not age.. Here's what you'll find out: What employers don't want you to know You think it's your resume that needs tweaking or your interview techniques but What if the real obstacle was something entirely different? What if the system itself was rigged against you in ways you've never considered—not because you're not qualified, but because of your date of birth. Who's impacted by ageism, or who isn't? When there's a problem like ageism in hiring, it "goes in both directions." As Janine Vanderburg reveals, we're not just talking about discrimination against those 40-plus. "Youngerism" is equally "alive and kicking." If you've been ghosted after interviews, if you've watched less qualified candidates get positions you were perfect for, it might not be you—it might be your birth year. Let's talk about the numbers they're not talking about Last year alone, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received 16,000 complaints of age discrimination. When surveyed, over 80% of respondents believed they had experienced workplace age discrimination. Even more shocking: Resume Builder's surveys found hiring managers systematically screen out both applicants over 60 AND those under 27. And if you work with AI? 90% of hiring managers don't want to hire anybody over 35 for roles involving artificial intelligence—despite experienced professionals often being the best AI power users. Three Places Ageism Is Sabotaging Your Career (And What to Do About It) Inside your own mind: When you think "I'm too young/old for this position" before even applying In hiring practices: When recruiters make assumptions about your abilities based solely on graduation dates Embedded in systems: When AI screening tools filter you out before a human ever sees your application The Demographic Shift That Will Change Everything By 2030—just five years away—there will be more people over 65 than under 18. Companies unprepared for this reality will be scrambling for talent while others thrive. Will you be positioned to capitalize on this inevitable shift? What Smart Job Seekers Do Differently As Janine advises, "You can be willing to fight to end ageism, and you can also try to preserve your financial security." Both can be true at once. The wisest approach? Learn the unwritten rules, navigate the system strategically, and position yourself where your true value is recognized. Listen now to discover how to turn what looks like an obstacle into your greatest competitive advantage. If you could somehow go faster than light, time would basically break. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, the faster you move, the slower time moves for you compared to everyone else. But if you somehow went faster than light, all the math goes crazy — time could start running backward or even stop making sense completely. You might arrive somewhere before you even left, which sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Scientists say it's pretty much impossible with what we know now, but it's still fun (and mind-bending) to think about. VW has revealed the specs for the 2025 GTI and Golf R, so the guys discuss what that means for the enthusiast community. They debate what's next for Gene, who has only driven Porsches his whole adult life. Then, Yunde is a track enthusiast and wants to go faster. Social media questions ask what is the guys' car-mod guilty pleasure, why didn't sportbacks catch on before SUVs took over, and which car company would be the most surprised to see where they ended up now?
