Russian authorities recently detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. They accused Gershkovich of being a spy and have held him on espionage charges since March 29. But Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that he believes Gershkovich is being wrongfully detained.Evan's arrest is Russia's latest attempt to intimidate foreign correspondents reporting in the country. Those constant threats, and now the very real risk of arrest, are common tactics. They make it easier for the Russian government to spread propaganda to its citizens and harder for the rest of the world to understand what's happening inside Russia. The Kremlin's actions make it nearly impossible to hear from the Russian people directly. To help us understand Evan's case and Russia's control over the foreign press, we have Gulnoza Said and Oystein Bogen. Gulnoza is the Europe and Central Asia program coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide. Oystein is the D.C. Bureau Chief and Lead Correspondent for the Norwegian network TV 2. Publisher: Ebury Publishing, 2020 The full story behind Oscar award-winning Icarus One of the Financial Times's 'Fifty people who shaped the decade' 'The biggest sports scandal the world has ever seen' In 2015, Russia's Anti-Doping Centre was suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) following revelations of an elaborate state-sponsored doping programme at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Involving a nearly undetectable steroid delivery system known as 'Duchesse cocktail', tampering and switching of urine samples, and a complex state-sanctioned cover-up, the programme was masterminded by Grigory Rodchenkov. The Rodchenkov Affair tells the full, unadulterated story that was first glimpsed in Bryan Fogel's award-winning documentary and still continues to captivate and shock the world. Charting the author's childhood growing up under the Iron Curtain, his first encounter with doping as a 22-year-old student athlete at Moscow State University, and his subsequent career working for the Soviet Olympic Committee, this breathtakingly candid journey reveals a rigged system of flawed individuals, brazen deceit and impossible moral choices. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

The controversy that's dominated the sporting world this week - the decision by the World Anti-Doping Agency to reinstate Russia's anti-doping agency which could see their country's athletes once again competing in international sport. The agency - known as Rusada - has been suspended since 2015 over alleged state backed doping after it was accused of covering up drug abuse, most notably during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The President of USA Cycling has said the world should get to know Ashton Lambie - Two years ago, he was a shop mechanic in Kansas and cycling on gravel - fast forward to September 2018 - the 27 year old has just set a new world record in the individual pursuit at the Pan American Championships by 3.25 seconds - a record that had stood since 2011. He'd already won a gold medal in the team pursuit a few days earlier. He's been telling Shari how his journey began on a bike. This time last year, Hurricane Maria was the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in 85 years, it left a trail of death and destruction, killing around 3,000 people and destroying the island which resulted in months of power outages because of damage to the electrical grid. Caught up in that Hurricane, was Puerto Rico's first ever golfer to earn full-time status on the LPGA Tour, Maria Torress. A year later, she has just competed at the Evian Championship, the final golf major of the season, at one point she was the overall leader. She's been telling Shari how she faced her namesake Hurricane. Welcome to episode #046 of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast, with Melissa Agnes and Roman Gaponenko. Global events, from the Olympics to the Oscars to a global crisis that impacts the world at large, present unique challenges when it comes to crisis preparedness and crisis management. Roman Gaponenko, a digital strategist who has worked for global agencies, had the opportunity to be a part of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics team tasked with social media and content strategy for the world event. In his role, Roman and his team had to anticipate risk, manage issues in real-time, deal with the real-time media and prevent crises from escalating. In this episode of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast, Roman and I sat down to discuss crisis management planning and prevention for global events. The conversation was so great that we decided to break it up into two parts. This first part discusses the approach Roman and his team took to plan for and prevent risks surrounding the Winter Olympics on the digital landscape. We also discuss how they anticipated issues and prepared to take part in and manage the real-time conversations that took place around the world throughout the Olympics. The second part of this podcast (TCIP #047), discusses what it was like on the ground in Sochi, how Roman and his team managed the issues that threatened the Olympics’ reputation, attacks by activist groups, the real-time media and so much more. Whether you’re planning for a global event or are in an industry that can potentially be impacted by global crises, this is the first of a two-part podcast series you won’t want to miss! Chinese athletes have taken home a total of nine medals and are ranked 11th in the medal tally at the Sochi Winter Olympics. This means China still lags behind the top nations in winter sports. Deputy chef de mission of the Chinese delegation Xiao Tian explains. "Overall, winter sports in China are restricted by economical, geographical and natural factors. We only have a short history of winter sports and the overall foundations are very weak. Among the 98 events across seven sports competed in at this Olympics, we only earned medals in 9 events across three sports." Biathelon athlete Song Chaoqing finished 63rd in the 7.5 kilometer sprint event at this Olympics. She's among the very few who practice this sport in China. "China started late in this sport, unlike with table tennis and diving. If the state and people in our country care about our sport as much as the summer sports, if more people understood and participated in this sport, we would definitely get better. This sport needs a lot of investments, including training, scientific research and also lots of other support." But compared to the difficulties of developing winter sports on a professional level, according to Zhang Litao, headmaster of a skiing school based in Beijing, the market for commercial winter sports is huge and still growing. "From the statistics we have, the skiing population in Beijing is between 5 to 6 million. For our ski resort alone, the number of tourists has risen by 15% this winter compared to last winter." Why is there such a gap between the huge market for the sport and the lack of talents in the national delegation? Chinese director Ying Da, also a commentator for ice hockey for the Sochi Winter Games, cited hockey as an example to back up his theory. "We are at a transitional period. Our national hockey team is run by the state using the old system. It has been proved that winter sports requires a huge amount of investment and can result in big consumption. The old rigid management style doesn't work. We need marketisation. Winter sports, especially ice hockey have the potential to attract a huge market." Whilst admitting marketisation might work with ice hockey, Xiao Tian argues that it doesn't always work with every sport. "Whether or not the national athlete performs well does not necessarily relate to the popularity of a sport. We need to popularize winter sports so more people are playing, but in the national team, we must have good and sound training and top-level design." Meanwhile, Beijing sport bureau chief Li Yingchuan says China's joint Beijing-Zhangjiakou bid for 2022 can also help promote winter sports in China. "The development of winter sports is lagging behind compared to summer sports. Through bidding to host the winter Olympics in Beijing, we want to promote the development of winter sports in nearby regions like Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei." China has never hosted a Winter Games but the 2008 Summer Olympics marked a key milestone in the country's emergence onto the world stage.

The Today programme says its "fair, balanced and impartial" in its science coverage. The statement came in response to comments after interviewing former Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Lawson, a climate change sceptic, alongside Sir Brain Hoskins, Professor of Meteorology and Director of the Grantham Institute of Climate Change at Imperial College. Today was the cause of further frustration on Monday when many listeners felt a story about genetically modified potatoes had no opposing side represented. We speak to some of those listeners about Today's coverage of controversies in science. British success at the Sochi Winter Olympics has created added interest in the games - as well as an 'enthusiastic' response from TV commentator Aimee Fuller to snowboarder Jenny Jones' bronze medal win last week. Officials with the International Olympic Committee are suggesting the Sochi Winter Olympics venue is almost ready to play host to the world, nine days ahead of the opening ceremonies. The Olympic Village has yet to receive its first athletes. However, IOC representatives have toured the facilities. Sandrine Ray is an advisor to the International Olympic Committee. "My first impression is that everything is pretty big, there are a lot of volunteers, everything new and this big advantage is that everything is in the same place, all the venues, the sports venues and the Olympic Village and all the facilities are really close to each other." One of the key concerns of the forthcoming Games in Russia is security. However, the IOC's Director of Olympic villages contends Sochi is the safest place in Russia right now. Security staff have closed off access to the Black Sea coastline in Sochi to keep the venues secure. Athletes arriving at Olympic Park will have to pass through security scanning and will be bussed directly to their villages. Russian authorities have deployed more than 50-thousand police officers and soldiers to guard the Olympics. Back-to-back suicide bombings in the southern Russian city of Volgograd, a key transit hub to get to Sochi, left 34-people dead in late December.
