Sheri Walters’ journey to Director of Sports Medicine at Texas A&M University reflects a career defined by innovation, collaboration, and comprehensive integration. Walters discusses the "arms race" in collegiate athletics and how Texas A&M shatters silos through unit alignment and being intentionally present. Drawing from her EXOS experience, she highlights the impact of integrating sports medicine with strength and conditioning. Walters employs research-based cross-body training to maintain strength, prioritizing long-term rehabilitation over limb symmetry index testing. She explains how her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) and Certified Performance and Sport Scientist® (CPSS®) credentials enable her to elevate rehabilitation and speak the language of sport performance professionals. Walters underscores the importance of getting student-athletes back to team strength and conditioning as soon as tissues can tolerate it to promote physiological and psychological healing. She also shares how strength and conditioning coaches can optimize return to performance and reduce reinjury risk. I don't want to be rehabbing a lower body injury and then turn around next season having to rehab an upper because we didn't maintain that strength. Those are all things that very early on, the strength coach can take. It helps from a physiological healing standpoint. It also helps from a psychological standpoint to be back with their team and doing a lot of their normal activities. By maintaining my CSCS, by getting my CPSS, it's helped me to be able to speak the same language as those professionals, and then ultimately, get the best outcome for our student athletes.” 8:25“We can make sure the tissue can tolerate the load, and then as soon as possible, integrate it back in. So for us, it's very critical that we're working very early on with the strength and conditioning coach to make that transition.” 17:00“I always encourage students pursuing strength and conditioning coaching careers to do is to get into a training room, connect with members of the sports medicine team and profession. They may do that as athletes before they become a strength coach, but especially for those who maybe don't have a high-level athletic experience, connecting with sports medicine professionals is extremely valuable.” 20:20

Tom Williams’ journey to Head of Performance and Sport Science for Major League Soccer (MLS) powerhouse, the Los Angeles (LA) Galaxy, began at a crossroads: pursue traditional coaching or medical pathways. As a soccer “Swiss Army knife,” he embraced early sport science alongside coaching, building a career defined by collaboration and innovation. At the Galaxy, Williams is part of a web of support that uses rich data storytelling tailored to stakeholders and players, guiding decisions and infusing value in every encounter. This system drives their three key pillars: winning championships — including their recent record-breaking sixth MLS Cup — developing a robust academy pipeline, and leading innovation. In MLS’s “cultural melting pot,” Williams balances diverse backgrounds and short-term demands like fixture congestion while employing sustainable long-term strategies. With a unique full-time cognitive department and creative approaches like dodgeball warm-ups, he combines trust and ingenuity to elevate performance and presents a blueprint for those exploring emerging sport science. Like, bring it. If you're the intern, be the best intern that they've ever had. If you're the fifth S&C, then be the best fifth S&C coach they've ever had. Because for me, everything matters all of the time, and those things never go unnoticed. Even though you might not see it eventually, you keep doing that every single day and being that best person. Then you will get there. It's just inevitable.” 28:30 “There's so many sports out there that need an edge. They need something that someone else isn't doing. And if you can provide that gap, then it enhances that team, that performance department, that medical department. It enhances all those things just by bringing that 1% something that's novel.” 29:55

You have to know how to manage, lead, and collaborate with different groups and different departments and practitioners from other areas.” 8:35 “Learning to be a good mentor. I think that most people think of themselves, if you go in a room and ask most coaches, ‘Hey, do you think you're a mentor?’ Everyone would say, ‘Oh yeah, I'm a good mentor.’ But very few of us have ever been taught [those] kind of mentorship skills and what that means, and how do you mentor young practitioners. And are you connecting with them in the way they need, not just how you want to connect with them and lead them.” 27:25 “You do always want to focus on some of the hard skills of the interview process, but I think we don't in the interview process ask enough questions around is someone stress resilient, can someone be vulnerable, can someone admit they make mistakes, can someone show that they have a growth mindset. How do they handle when they don't know the answer to something?” 30:30

Let's face it, menopause and menopausal women more specifically, don't have the greatest reputation. Hot, sweaty, grumpy and sometimes "hysteric women", is the first and sometimes the only thing that people know or associate with menopause. This is quite alarming because menopause is as unavoidable as puberty, it is the second drastic hormonal shift that every woman (who has the privilege of aging) will experience at some point in her later adult years, starting typically from mid-40ies - early 50ies. However, if more people saw and understood menopause for what it is, we'd understand that it is vital to do everything we can to make sure that we arrive to our menopausal years well, because there are a multitude of changes that come along with menopause that impact the way that we are able to train and perform as runners. In this episode Shona helps us understand:The difference between the perimenopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal phases. What changes you can expect and how to navigate them. The vital role that oestrogen plays in muscle synthesis and bone density. How strength training is the most powerful tool you have in our toolbox, alongside nutrition and proper recovery.Where HRT fits in and how the narrative is changing on hormone replacement therapy. How to adapt the way you train to best support your body as it transforms.Shona is part of a small group of people who see, understand and is actively working on the problem of lack of or misinformation about menopause. She will soon be publishing a book (by way of the same name) that speaks specifically to the "Menopausal Runner". Shona's experience and expertise in the subject matter really blew us away. On today's episode, I'm talking to Assistant Professor and Sport Scientist Catherine Saenz about career transitions.Catherine is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on how exercise and nutrition impact energy metabolism at the molecular level and translating this into personalized performance prescriptions. With one year to go in her PhD program she followed her advisor from UConn to Ohio State which meant she had to retake classes and extend her training. And then again in her first job out, she was one year away from going up for tenure when an opportunity to go back to Ohio State came up and she again took the risk and made the transition. Before pursuing an academic career, Catherine thought she would do clinical work and completed an internship in Dietetics at Iowa State University and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Cleveland Guardians. We talk about:How to navigate career transitionsThe trap of excusing not getting started by over-preparing and being stuck in a learning mode or student-mentalityBuilding your confidence and your voice to share the work that you loveYou can find the show notes and more resources at https://madamathlete.comKeep an eye out for new content or let us know what you'd like to see next by following us on social:Instagram: @theMadamAthleteFacebook: @MadamAthleteTwitter: @MadamAthlete

Dan is one of the most requested guests. Elite coach Dr. Dan Plews.   Just days after coaching Chelsea Sodaro to her debut Kona in 8:33, Dr Dan joins Greg to dissect the process of how Chelsea went from having a baby 18 months ago, to winning Kona this past weekend. Dan discusses the training prep, nutrition, and heat adaptations, plus the mental prep that he and Chelsea went through prior to her amazing debut.   Dan Plews is an Applied Sports Scientist, Researcher and coach. As a Sports Scientist (specialising in the area of Physiology) Dan has worked closely with athletes who have won more than 25 world and Olympic titles in the sports of rowing, kayak and triathlon. Athletes include Mahe Drysdale, Lisa Carrington, Eric Murray and Hamish Bond.   As a researcher, Dan completed his PhD in the area of applied heart rate variability (HRV). This work focused on implementing and validating methods regarding the application of HRV to track training adaptation in elite athletes.   Since then, Dan has gone onto having more than 21 peer-reviewed publications in the area of applied sports science.   Dan is seriously passionate about endurance sport, particularly Ironman triathlon, where he has coached 3 athletes under the 8-hour barrier. He lives and breathes it, and is a competitive Ironman athlete himself. In 2018 he broke the amateur course record at Ironman New Zealand by more than 10 minutes in a time of 8 hr 35 min.   Dan thrives on continuous learning and being on the cutting edge of applied sports science. He often throws himself into the depths of new science, measurements and self-quantification to find out first hand the effects that they have on training adaptation.   He's one of the world's greatest minds in endurance sports. He has the practical and personal experience, and he has the science. Check out his website - https://www.endureiq.com/   Timestamps 2:28 - Interview starts 5:36 - It's been a challenging year for one of Dan's star athletes - Javier Gomez. Dan describes his perspective on the 'highs & lows' of professional sport for a coach. 8:08 - Dan holds the course record in Kona @ 8:24. Greg and Dan discuss how fast the race is getting. 14:52 - Dan and Greg discuss at what point in the race he felt Chelsea was going to win. 19:17 - These types of wins are lifechanging for an athlete. Dan explains how he feels Chelsea can go on and win further within the sport plus also to be able to grow and deal with the success at this level. Success breeds Success 23:26 - Dan and Chelsea met only2 years ago ... right before she had her baby. The story from that interview is extraordinary. 28:50 - Chelsea was the first athlete Dan has coached through pregnancy. So he applied his sports science knowledge and got to work on studying what he need to do coach Chelsea back to racing form. 32:46 - Chelsea chose to only take 6 weeks off from training after giving birth. Her frist goal was to get to The Collins Cup. Dan explains her training program and the path to Kona. Chelsea's dedication to race in The Collins Cup is an inspiring story. 36:33 - Chelsea's swimming power was holding her back so they called in Paul Newsome to help and guide her. 42:33 - Dan explains the point at which he and Chelsea decided to focus on Kona. 44:48 - Greg probes Dan on his heat-adaption process for Chelsea and Kona. But do we get the full details? usually Dan is so open in sharing his wisdom. 46:51 - One of the hot topics in endurance sports nutrition at the moment is ‘carbohydrate periodization'. Dan explains his view on training to improve Chelsea's ability to make use of fat as a fuel source during exercise. 52:21 - Greg asks Dan on his views on hydration in race mode. We know that better performance can come from those who lose more body fat lose over the course of a marathon. 55:49 - On race day, what did Dan advise Chelsea in terms of keeping cool? 57:49 - Dan and Greg discuss the mental and emotional preparation for Chelsea prior to the race. Is what I'm doing now, positively affecting the last part of my race 01:09:35 - Interview concludes

In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with an expert in the field of performance nutrition, Dr Michael Ormsbee. He also happens to be a previous professor of mine! We touch on Dr Mike's own sporting journey, beginning with ice hockey in high school and college, before getting into triathlons and cross fit more recently. Dr Mike is a leading researcher in sports and performance nutrition, and we hear how he works with elite athlete populations, including currently with elite female athletes using Whoop bands. We discuss the need for research in females and for better understanding the effects of the menstrual cycle and the unique female physiology on all aspects of performance. This episode dives deep into the concept of pre-sleep feeding, busting the myth that eating before bed is detrimental. For both athletes and non-athletes, consuming protein close to bed can have metabolic benefits and increase muscle protein synthesis, especially when exercising in the evening. We touch on nutrient timing and nutrient priming for recovery. Dr Mike compares different protein types: whey, casein, other animal sources, and plant based protein, reassuring listeners that plant proteins can be just as beneficial, and to look for sources rich in leucine. Dr Mike recommends 40g protein before bed and shares his research into elite female athletes showing that the majority are missing the mark here.  We emphasize the importance of ensuring you are consuming enough protein throughout the day rather than focusing specifically on timing. We debunk the myth that eating close to bed affects body composition, rather, type of training plays a much bigger role. Dr Mike discusses his current and future research interests in female athletes, and we underscore the need for more of this research in women: Dr Mike is leading the way! Follow Dr Mike and his work on Instagram @MikeOrmsbee and @FSUISSM  Dr Mike's Official Bio: Michael J. Ormsbee is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology, the Director of the Institute of Sports Sciences & Medicine at Florida State University, and an honorary research fellow at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and the International Society of Sports Nutrition and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. His research expertise involves the interaction of exercise training, nutrition, and supplementation to improve metabolism and achieve optimal body composition, human performance, and health in both athletic and clinical populations. Dr. Ormsbee was honored as the 2014 FSU Teacher of the Year, 2017 Nutrition Researcher of the Year (NSCA), 2018 FSU Graduate Student Mentor of the Year, 2020 FSU Distinguished Teacher of the Year, and the 2020 Sport Scientist of the Year (NSCA). That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem   “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
