In this episode of the Nexus Podcast, we speak with third-year head coach Michiel Bartman, whose curriculum vitae includes three Olympic medals as a competitor for the Netherlands, where he was born and raised. "For us, the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta is the most important race of the season,” he says. “With the Jefferson in front of the title, it gives me extra boost. Welcome everyone to another episode featuring the "Man of the Hour" and arguably the most comedic Head Coach in the history of rowing, Mr. Chris Clark, Director of Rowing at the University of Wisconsin. The former Head Coach of the Badgers Men's Rowing Team, Clark cemented himself as a legend in the rowing world. His overall demeanor, way of communicating and being to the point, is unlike any other. This man has absolutely no fear. A man of dignity, Coach Clark emphasizes the importance of team culture, the brute force of power needed to propel a rowing shell, and laying down the basics to affirm success on the water, as he once learned as a walk-on for the Pirates at Orange Coast College. OCC, most commonly known as Coast, a two-year junior college in sunny Costa Mesa, California, the men of OCC train down in Newport Beach, where Clark first took his rows as a young man, advancing himself to row for a year at Stanford Men's Rowing, then transferring across the way to the University of California, Berkeley where he completed his collegiate rowing career. Eventually rowing for the United States National Team, Clark knew that somehow along the lines he was meant to coach rowing, leading him to coach at the US Naval Academy, and then entering the doors of Porter Boathouse, calling it home since then. This podcast is one for the books, not only was it filmed in Coach Clark's legendary "mobile office" away from the wife and kids, and the boathouse entirely... it was on the side of the road, as he believed has better internet connection. We discuss the state of the recent World Championships in Belgrade, influence of Steve Gladstone, coaching Beau Hoopman, coxswains on the team, the walk-on culture at Wisco, becoming the new Director of Wisconsin Rowing from being the former Head Coach of the Men's Rowing team for many years, answering the posted "Q&A's", how to establish a team that is fully invested with one sole purpose, along with more topics. Stay tuned, sit back, and listen to intelligence. O'Neill cemented himself as an icon in this sport. After speaking with newly Assistant Coach, Alexa McAuliffe '22, on the podcast earlier this year, Longhorn Legends - Kate Knifton '23 & coxswains Rachel Rane '23, Z Romero '23, the Texas Women's Rowing podcast with the middle four of the 2023 Varsity 8+, and Alexa Matos '26 prior to her start in the Fall of 2022, we have had the honor of hosting podcasts with much of the Texas Rowing roster, so we only felt that it was right to host Coach Dave O'Neill, who stands at the helm of the program. This episode was one for the books, as we covered many different topics, speaking closely on the state of the squad this past spring season in 2023, elaborating more on his coaching strategy, coming to Texas after spending 16 years at Cal, benefits of being a Power-5 Conference rowing team and as a student-athlete, what being a Texas Teammate means to him and the coaching staff, Day in the Life of a Longhorn, responding to an incredible Q&A providing more depth on the program and how he (along with the coaching staff) operate on the daily.Dave spent four years studying at Boston College, while rowing on the Men's Rowing Team. O'Neill resides in Austin, Texas with his family. This podcast is truly not one to miss out on, and we at the For Stars Podcast hope you sit back, click "play" and listen in on one of the greatest rowing coaches in history, Mr. Dave O'Neill. A fighter - that would be name for Dr. James Clark, a Washington native who spends his time breaking the barrier and defeating the odds day in and day out. Clark, a graduate and professor at the University of Washington, who was a member of the Men's Rowing Team on Carnegie Lake, took on the challenge of competing with the most historical and well-known crew team located in the Pacific Northwest. A large Power-5 conference school in the PAC-12, the UW is known for excellence both on and off the water. James was and still remains to be a positive influence on the world around him adding to the initiative of overcoming obstacles in order to live an ordinary life filled with enjoyment and the willingness to succeed in tough situations. At just 17 years of age, Clark was hit in a head on collision that led to his leg needing to be amputated. All through that, and shortly years later he found himself trying out for the men's crew team. Nothing was going to stop Clark from chasing his goals, and one of them was to be a member of the Husky Rowing team. As time went on and cuts needed to be made, Clark was faced with having to adapt his rowing stroke as he wore a prosthesis. We talk about how to take on adversity and the mindset of living a fulfilled life even with the absence of a leg. Episode 360: Olivia Foli's Life Updates as a College Student Athlete, Part I Episode NotesToday's Special Guest Mentor is our daughter Olivia Foli (2nd seat in the picture). Last January, we aired our first two podcast conversations. Olivia talked about graduating high school during the COVID-19 pandemic and entering UW-Madison as a freshman. The school was in lockdown. Everything was restricted, and classes were online. Olivia described the degree of isolation she felt living in the dorms and the anxiety and depression that accompanied it. I thought it important to discuss the mental health challenges of our youth that we are hearing so much about. In the 2nd podcast conversation, we discussed adulting and self-reliance. This included discussing how Olivia met the seven Universal Human Needs: connection, honesty, physical well-being, play, peace, autonomy, and meaning. Both episodes can be found in this episode's resource section. The upside of the COVID-19 pandemic is a new appreciation for our emotional and social well-being. Olivia said she used the time during covid to get to know herself better and continue learning while some dreams of playing violin in the orchestra and joining the rowing team were put on hold.Olivia's sophomore year provided new opportunities. She joined the orchestra as a violinist and was able to join UW-Madison's Women's Rowing Team. Socially, she was able to meet tons of people and begin forming long-term friendships. Our first two podcast conversations aired in January 2022. Olivia was about to enter the official start of UW-Madison's rowing season. In this conversation, you will hear what Olivia experienced:Starting and competing in a new sport at the college level,Choosing the lightweight team vs. the open-weight team,Team travel out of state and competing in Regatas,Team dynamics and overcoming negativity at Cocoa Beach training last year and changes this year,Leading as an upper-level student-athlete,A day in the life of a student-athlete,Roommate dilemmas, dynamics, and changes from one year to the next,Giving roommates room to grow and become adults, andCoursework for her majors in psychology and Spanish with a minor in women and gender studies.I'm encouraged to see the resilience in our youth as they work through the aftermath of the pandemic. Enjoy. DOWNLOAD  NEXT STEP After Listening: Challenge yourself and do the Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring (C.A.L.M.) Activities, below. Activities: Take this risk or do this adventurous task: Write down the sidelined activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Decide if you are going to let those activities go or whether achieving them is still important. Create a new priority list. I missed socially gathering with family, friends, and clients so I am expanding my social activities. It feels wonderful. Apply Self-Compassion: I attended a self-compassion workshop with author and teacher Kristin Neff. She says one easy way to care for ourselves is through touch. Physical touch provides a sense of security and can increase your level of oxytocin; a hormone that helps to soothe distressing emotions. I find it comforting to gently massage each hand and forearm after completing a writing exercise. I suggest giving yourself a gentle hand and forearm massage after you complete the adventurous task above.  Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate the person Olivia is becoming as an adult. I appreciate how she learns from her mistakes, follows through on commitments, and weighs each decision that has led to more decision-making and risk-taking. This year Olivia's confidence increased as she has taken charge of her mental and physical health. I continue to appreciate her joy,

My guest today is Miranda Holder.Miranda is a leadership coach who began her career as an endurance athlete.  At 25, while training for the US Olympic Rowing Team, she found out she had a congenital heart condition that abruptly ended her career as an athlete. She transitioned to coaching and served as the Head Coach for the Georgetown University's Women's Rowing Team but found herself burned out after about a decade. Miranda transitioned and trained as a leadership coach at Georgetown.  She has her own company and is as a professional certified coach with the ICF, a certified narrative coach through moment institute and is also a registered yoga teacher. Miranda describes herself as equal parts artist, athlete, and dreamer.  And a deeply devoted pragmatist.  She is most excited when she's supporting another human who has a big dream they want to bring into the world.Miranda and I met through Brian Levenson, my guest on episode 27.  (Thank you, Brian, for the introduction and connection).  After our initial conversation Miranda and I agree that we'd be great neighbors and it was one of those moments when I wished the world was a little smaller so we could indeed hang out in person!  Alas, Miranda is in the NE United States, I'm in Sri Lanka… I'm grateful for the technology that connects us and allowed us to have this conversation and exploration.  In fact, it is thanks for Miranda that I learned the term “structured emergence.”  Miranda attributed the term to her narrative coach training, but it really captures the essence of my conversation on this podcast.  I love the experience of seeing what emerges with each guest, for myself, the guests, and the listeners.  If you've been touched by any of the conversations here, I'd love to hear from you.  Or reach out directly to my guests. This podcast has been an experience of ‘structured emergence' since the start and I love what's emerging! Thank you so much for being part of the journey!Miranda, thank you for sharing pieces of your journey with us today, your reflections, wisdom, and inspiration. “Talent is everywhere, the hunger is everywhere, the thirst is everywhere, but the access and opportunity is not.” No one understands this better than Arshay Cooper, the renowned rower, award-winning author, motivational speaker, activist, and protagonist of the acclaimed documentary “A Most Beautiful Thing.” To understand how Arshay's life has become the center of a NAACP Image Award-nominated documentary, you need to know more about his backstory. Arshay grew up on Chicago's Westside in the ‘90s, and he knows the harder side of life. His mother is a recovering addict, and his three siblings all sleep in a one room apartment, in an area plagued by gang violence and addiction. Growing up, Arshay kept to himself and dreamed of becoming a chef. In high school, Arshay spontaneously took up the sport of crew, and he became the captain of the first all-Black high school rowing team in America. He and his teammates experienced racism and discrimination while playing an almost all-white sport, which ultimately transformed Arshay's life. When 1Huddle's CEO and Founder Sam Caucci sat down with Arshay on this episode of Bring It In, they talked about everything from why the ‘talent shortage' is really an access shortage, to how people from diverse backgrounds measure success differently. So if you're ready for one of the most powerful episodes yet, then it's time to… Bring it in!

Welcome to episode #88 of Fraternity Foodie! I’m your host, Mike Ayalon, CEO of Greek University. Today we are talking health and fitness with Emily Coffman, host of Girls Gone Healthy Podcast. Emily came up with the idea for the podcast when she realized how many women like her were struggling when it came to working out, eating right, and feeling confident in their body. Our bodies are constantly changing and fluctuating and no one has taught us how to adapt to these changes. Instead they tell us to burn more calories and try the new latest diet. Emily is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, a Division 1 athlete at the University of Oklahoma and was living a very unhealthy lifestyle in college. She thought she was healthy because she was constantly active and could eat whatever she wanted without gaining weight. But truth is she didn’t know how to train without over working herself or how to fuel her body properly. We find out why she chose University of Oklahoma coming from Boston, what she learned being on the Women's Rowing Team, why she went Greek as an athlete, how to train without overworking yourself, how you can fuel your body properly, how to manage sugar in our diets, how to trust your body and ditch your scale, how to stay motivated in working out, how to replace negative thoughts with self-love, and Emily's favorite restaurant in Boston. In this episode we take a deep dive into a seminal study recently published focusing on the injury and illnesses which most contributed to training missed by athletes on the Australian Rowing Team during the London and Rio Olympic Games. This is a must read overview for coaches, athletes and service team members working in Rowing, but also other endurance activities and indeed all sports. Dr Lari openly discusses the study design, the demographic, and the key injury and illness factors which lead to missed training by some of the most elite athletes in the world. Welcome to this month's episode of BFR Radio.  In exciting news, gyms are back open! During the COVID period a lot of people may not have had all of the equipment necessary for "traditional" strength training. So during the COVID period  I challenged myself away from more traditional high load lifting to create a hybrid strength program that worked around the constraints of not having access to lots of weight. The program involved combining  low load training (the max I lifted was 40kg). As I knew that this would be enough external load, I delved into my bag of tricks and used the addition of Isometrics (use of a tie down strap), lifting bands, Blood Flow restriction and Plyometric exercises with a goal to improve athlete performance. As I‘ve always advocated, there is no substitute for higher external load (i.e. mechanical stress) and therefore the addition of bands and isometric straps provided an additional external loading with the “minimal equipment” challenge and then the addition of BFR was using metabolic stress as a proxy for the mechanical stress that was missing.  I’ve been collecting both upper and lower body testing for a few months that has actually predated me even starting this type of training so my preliminary findings are quite interesting. Once I’ve put them together I’ll share with you the results.   In other BFR work, I’ve been working on BFR use framework. Consequently I’ve been increasing my literature reading. There is so much is so many different areas, so if there is anything of particular interest that you want to hear on the podcast let me know and I’ll review those papers.   Today’s guest is NSWIS Senior Coach, David Young who is the lead S&C coach for the Women’s national rowing team based out of Penrith in NSW. As I usually preview a paper before we go into this segment, I actually wished I’d waited for the Rowing Paper I reviewed a few episodes ago. With the information that David will share with us today, I feel that we could have really had a BFR rowing special. And add last month's episode review from Sam Halley on the effects of IPC on kayaking performance (with a potential for it to transfer to rowing performance) then this would have been a really sports specific episode.  I am sure you'll get a lot out of today's episode. David brings a wealth of coaching experience and he really brings some good practical take-aways for BFR use in an elite training environment. Some more information: David is a Senior S&C Coach with the New South Wales Institute of Sport, having previously worked at both the English Institute of Sport and the Sports Council for Wales. During his 16 years in High Performance Sport David has worked across a wide range of Olympic and Commonwealth sports. Since 2006, he has worked with rowing programs in the UK and Australia, being fortunate enough to support athletes to numerous World, Olympic and Paralympic medals.  His current role sees him deliver S&C services to Rowing Australia’s Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre based in Penrith. David has a Master’s degree from the University of Sydney and ongoing industry accreditations with the ASCA, UKSCA and NSCA. Guest Bio:"In my 30 years on this planet, I‘ve learned a few lessons that I apply to everything I do. The first is that all goals must be written down and visible on a daily basis. The second is that there's no such thing as overnight success and consistent work is the only path to success. Finally, everything is the way it is because someone made it that way. So to understand people is to understand the world. I‘ve applied these lessons to my 12 year rowing career culminating as a member of the 2016 USA Olympic rowing team. After the Games, I had to descend from the metaphorical mountain I‘d spent years scaling and ended up feeling lost for the first few months. Searching for my next climb, I found real estate. I got my license six months later and have been pursuing all avenues of this business ever since. I‘m a Realtor Partner with a Wall Street Journal Top 100 nationally ranked team, The Gunderman Group. We focus on advocacy, risk management and exceeding our clients personal definitions of success. By staying true to those core values, we're the top team in the East Bay of the Bay Area and sell over $180M per year (with over $1.5B sold in total) with an average price point of $1.2M. I'm also fascinated by real estate investing and completed my first flip during my first year in the business. My wife and I also invest in out-of-state multi family properties. I'm actively looking for my next few deals. I wanted to share the value of creating your own path and building a life of freedom, so I recently created a podcast called Another Way To Play. I believe that if you trade hours for dollars, you will never achieve true freedom in your life. I bring inspirational and practical content to listeners at their own personal crossroads by interviewing entrepreneurs, thought leaders and industry experts to learn how they achieved freedom in their lives. I recently got married to the love of my life, Kristin, who is also an Olympic rower and entrepreneur. She runs her own business and loves real estate investing and we are actively building what we call our “business/real estate empire.”
