POPULARITY
The centre of the world. It's a funny concept, really, because on a planet with 8 billion people, the world's attention never settles on any one event or thing for much more than a moment. Most of the time you would probably argue that the world's attention is divided and scattered. It takes an historic moment, something really big, truly significant, to hone those 8 billion sets of eyes to one point. And to be there in person, to actually experience it for yourself is to be an eyewitness to history. I met a guy who was on his OE in Europe in 1989 when he woke up one morning and heard maybe something was stirring. He hustled to a train and ended up with his photograph in the New York Times, tearing down the Berlin Wall. Truthfully, I can't compete with that. But by the nature of my job, I guess I've been fortunate to witness some reasonably significant events, first hand. I sat there as Pope Francis addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations. I've seen Presidential inaugurations, Obama speaking on the mall. I was there in the room in 2016 when Donald Trump strode into a Philadelphia arena and formally accepted the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Something tells me that despite our geographic isolation, New Zealanders are good at sniffing out big historic moments. It could be a regal one – a royal wedding of a funeral? It can be a tragic event like witnessing the 9/11 attacks. Sport can be a good one. I saw Leo Messi score for Argentina at the opening game of the 2014 Football World Cup. That was special. And I was sitting on the finish line when Usain Bolt won the 100m at the Rio Olympic Games. Sometimes it takes luck. Sometimes it takes money. And sometimes it takes an exclusive kind of privilege that almost none of us will ever have. Take a papal conclave. There might be 1.4 billion Catholics on the planet, but only those cardinals who were in the room will ever truly know what it was like to be a part of that conclave. Just being outside in St Peters Square would be an incredible experience; the moment everyone saw the white smoke. But just imagine being inside. If you were to divide the number of followers worldwide by every man in that room, there are more than ten million Catholics for each individual cardinal. But only those cardinals will know what it's like to be there in person, to see the votes tallied, to hear the new Pope choose a name. The world's attention might have been focused on the Vatican, waiting for the smoke, but for this moment, only a tiny few were there. 133 eyewitnesses to a moment in history. On December 13th, 2008, Tony Hoffman was paroled by the California Department of Correction after serving a two-year sentence for a drug-related robbery. While incarcerated, Tony set four goals: Race BMX professionally, go to the Olympics, start a non-profit called the Freewheel Project, and become a professional mental health and substance abuse speaker.Today, he's done it all… and so much more.Tony's youth was riddled with the dichotomy of athletic success mixed with substance abuse. During his senior year at Clovis High School he was featured on the cover of BMXer Magazine, and was sponsored by Fox Racing, Spy Sunglasses and Airwalk Shoes. But eventually, Tony's mental health eventually deteriorated to a point where he could no longer thrive in sports and he took to life on the streets. He battled addiction, violence, and homelessness, and at one point, was even the victim of a robbery and stabbing. His life of crime eventually led him to prison… and that's where everything changed. A chance encounter with an unexpected mentor would change his understanding of spirituality forever, and flip the switch on his outlook on life.Since parolling from prison, Tony has tirelessly worked towards achieving his goals and the dreams he'd set out for while incarcerated. He raced BMX professionally for several years and continued on to coach Brooke Crain to a 4th place finish at the Rio Olympic Games, accomplishing his dream of going to the Olympics. The Freewheel Project was very successful for many years helping thousands of youth through action sports before moving on to pursuing a very demanding national speaking career. Today Tony is an author, an owner of pH Wellness drug and alcohol treatment facility, and one of the world's most requested mental health and substance use speakers.************Show Notes:A big thank you to Tony for joining the podcast and sharing your inspiring story. Welcome to episode 206 with Karsta Lowe, who is an Olympian and professional volley ball player who was a member of the United States women's national team that won bronze medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Karsta has played volley ball, at the highest level, all over the world, winning multiple titles and medals along the way. But throughout her career she was also struggling with anxiety, depression and OCD which would later lead to an eating disorder and suicidal thoughts. In this episode I chat to Karsta about how both her mental struggles and international career progressed and intertwined. We chat about her childhood experiences with mental health issues and about how these were complicated further by the loss of her father at a young age. We also chat about going to the Olympics and the struggles she faced off the court, how all of this led to Karsta getting help and what that help looked like for her. And we chat about life after professional sport, the different types of grief, learning to be gentle and how life changes when you accept radical compassion. The idea of a lifelong athlete being at the Olympic Games, on the way to winning a medal, but also completely falling apart at the same time, just goes to show that you never know what someone might be going through, despite how strong they look on the outside. On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Kate Richardson-Walsh, ex-GB hockey captain and national record holder, to talk about how to use her on-pitch expertise with team building in the coaching and business world.KEY TAKEAWAYSWe all find ourselves in challenging situations and the majority of times we pull ourselves through somehow, someway to the other side, and sometimes it takes a long time. During surgery for a broken jaw during London 2012 I really relied on my support network and the team around me to get me through, I'm not sure I would have done had it not been for them. They literally gave me all their energy.I grew up seeing leadership as one person at the front shouting at everyone else, very “I say you do”. Leadership looked like the most alien thing in the world, I was really shy as a teenager and didn't want to use my voice at all, which is actually really common in the teams I've been in since or have coached. I prefer connecting with people, understand them and each other and build out those different spaces that people really need. But, sometimes not speaking at all is totally fine, just taking things in, taking time, going away to think about it and bring your thoughts back to the team.We need to look at other people's experiences and what they're holding back because of the negative narratives and stereotypes that have been built by the white patriarchy that have put us in these positions and are holding us back. Managing our state and emotions is important, but at the same time there also needs to be an understanding that unless we hear from people about they're feeling and experiencing, how are we ever going to move on as a society. The moments that I've experienced homophobia or sexism or where I've experienced someone else experience racism or ableism are the moments I wish I'd spoken up more and it's something I'm trying to get better at. Otherwise those people carry on in their lives thinking they're right and have the dominant voice, we all need to challenge that status quo.Mission statements, goals or values often live in the meeting or on the piece of paper they're written on, they wouldn't transcend that time we were discussing them. But having more time to talk about it helps embed it into our processes, habits, how we behave, interact with and show up for one another. BEST MOMENTS‘The culture we created in the team was that everybody was leading themselves and leading the team, it was the most amazing thing to see and be a part of.'‘We've got to celebrate our differences. Wouldn't life be so boring if it was all the same, we need to lift difference up.'‘In 2012 our vision was gold, it was simple – athletes have simple minds! Some of the women couldn't even say the word “gold”, the fear of failure was real for a lot of people because we'd failed a lot. When we built out a behavioural framework, things started to change because we could see what we could challenge each other against and celebrate our successes as well.''10-11% of organisations operationalise their values into behaviours which kind of blows your mind, but when you think about it it's obvious. You can really tell the ones that do. They're engaged and in tune with who they are., but there's not many that have it.'ABOUT THE GUESTKate Richardson-Walsh, OBE is an Olympic Gold and Bronze Medal winning English field hockey player. She was capped a record 375 times for her country and was the England and Great Britain Captain for 13 years. An inspirational and charismatic leader she has been widely credited for helping build the incredible team ethos and commitment that drove the GB team to victory at the Rio Olympic Games. In winning gold Kate also made history in other ways, becoming one half of the first same-sex married couple to win an Olympic medal playing in the same team.Having retired from international hockey following Rio, Kate is now turning her experience towards coaching, encouraging the grassroots development of the game and applying the leadership and performance lessons of a career in elite sport to the corporate environment. She currently serves as a Patron for the Women's Sport Trust and UN Women, supports disability hockey as an ambassador for Access Sport, and sits on the International Hockey Federation's Athlete's Committee. With the pressures of international hockey behind her she is also indulging a few of her other passions, including travel, fashion, cooking and Manchester United.Website: http://www.katerichardson-walsh.comPODCAST DESCRIPTIONThe Build Better Brands podcast is to inspire small business owners and help them realise that they don't have to be Nike to have a great brand, and the sooner they start to focus on making it better, the sooner they can improve their lives and the lives of others. On the show I'll be talking to business owners that have built brands from the ground up. My guest today has been on multiple journeys. Picking himself up after his athletics dream was crushed. Overcoming and managing a significant speech impediment. Finding joy, balance and his passion in helping others achieve a pain free life.James Davies, author of “Body”, is the founder and CEO of Rising Health, which he started 10 years ago and his clients include David Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Philip Schofield, Mo Farah among many others. He has worked globally with professional athletes ranging from Olympic champions, premiership footballers, NFL and rugby union players, as well as A-List actors like Eva Mendes. He is the sought after therapist and even served the Great Britain team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.But rather than being trained as a physiotherapist, like most practitioners are who work for national teams, James actually trained at the British School of Osteopathy. He studied Massage and Sports injuries at the London School of Massage, Tecar Therapy in Italy, Tok Sen in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and is a noted authority on laser therapy, dry needling, acupuncture and cupping. As a performance therapist and athletics coach, James is able to integrate a range of therapies including, massage, biomechanics and functional and structural applications. He developed the ethos of relieve, restore and perform based on his own personal experience as a young athlete, and his experience working with elite athletes. This is a really cool conversation for me to have, I loved chatting with James, I learnt a lot from his new book ‘Body', the language of pain, finding joy in movement and I loved how the majority of what we talked about came down to finding balance and creating a stress free life. Enjoy!

Born in Savlamar, Jamaica, Akeem didn't have much of an advantage from the beginning. With limited options and tragic events happening early in life, he moved to Canada with his mother seeking a better life. However, they fell into tough times and struggled to find stability, moving many different times in a short period of time. Down but not out, with the help of some friends, they were able to get back on their feet. Akeem became involved in sports, mainly football and track and field. Akeem excelled both on the field and on the track and won many different awards. In the 11th grade, he started to gain offers from Division I schools in the United States. Nevertheless, Akeem's path to becoming an NCAA Division I student-athlete was not smooth. After failed attempts with the S.A.T. and the A.C.T. once, Akeem did not get the scores he needed to accept a full athletic scholarship from an NCAA institution. You would think all of this adversity on top of having multiple learning disabilities would've stopped Akeem from furthering his education. But quitting has never been an option. He attended Barton Community College in the fall of 2010. Two years later he would go on to make his first Canadian Olympic Team and earn All-American honours, becoming a national champion and earning a full athletic scholarship to The University of Alabama. Akeem eventually went on to become the first in his immediate family to graduate from college on top of becoming a Division I Track and Field All-American. Through perseverance, a resilient mindset and a stubborn attitude to succeed, Akeem has become a 2x Olympian (2012 & 2016), helping Canada bring home an Olympic Bronze Medal at the Rio Olympic Games. With an intriguing story and captivating delivery, Akeem takes you through the highs and lows, and shows you what a resilient mindset can achieve.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her competitive drive and standards fro success fit right in with our team, and she also has completed 5, yes 5, SEAL Team "Challenges" (3-5 day workshops) learning to develop the SEAL Team Mindset. Lauren is one of our key partners leading Victory Strategies Team Building workshops. IIf you would like to set up a discovery call about our Team Building offerings. Please mail us info@victory-stratgies.com----Bio----Lauren is a 3-time Olympian who has taken her lessons from the athletic field into the business world to earn success in a new industry. She was a member of the U.S. Women's National Field Hockey Team from 2005-2016 where she competed in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic Games. She captained the team from 2011 - 2016 until she retired after the Rio Olympic Games. In her playing career she competed in 2 Pan American Games, winning gold in both the 2011 and 2015 Games, the 2014 World Cup where her team achieved a historic 4th place finish, was a gold medalist at the 2014 Champions Challenge, and won bronze at the 2016 Champions Trophy. In 2014 Lauren was named an FIH Player of the Year nominee and twice selected to the All-Pan American Team. While training for the Olympics, Lauren earned her Masters in Public Administration with an emphasis in Non-Profit Management from the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University. Before joining the National Team, Crandall attended Wake Forest University where she was a two-time National Champion, two-time ACC Champion, and 3-time All American. In 2006 she was a Finalist for the Honda Award, the collegiate sport specific top honor. However, beyond the championships, honors and awards that show up in a biography, Lauren has navigated her learnings through the losses and failures that have defined her athletic career. As a young captain asked to lead a team into an Olympic Games there were many failed moments that created opportunities for immense growth, many conflicts that developed emotional intelligence to better serve her team, and innumerable losses that forced her to transcend beyond the score board to learn about long-term winning from a leadership perspective.Since retiring from her athletic career, Lauren has found value in sharing her stories of failure by teaching people how to evaluate losing as a normal process and apply the lessons learned into the next “game”. Growth and development can be a painfully slow process but necessary to master in order to achieve high performance. Everybody wants to win - but the hard part is putting in the time to understand the processes and mindset behind winning and that is the foundation of Lauren's learnings.Lauren now works in the insurance industry where she applies the parallels between succeeding as a team athlete and succeeding as part of a sales team.

The UK's favourite fitness coach is back with series two of his podcast. This summer, Joe will be speaking to inspirational friends and some of his favourite people to ask them what they do to keep themselves feeling mentally and physically strong in the face of life's little challenges. It might be going for a new personal best on the running machine, or cosying up with a good book; every guest will share the one thing that works for them in the hope it might inspire you to try something new. In the first episode of series two, Joe speaks to one of the UK's most decorated Olympians, Sir Mo Farah. He's the current holder of the 'double double', gold medals in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the London and Rio Olympic Games. As a teenager growing up in London, Mo says running saved him from taking a less positive route in his life. Mo dials into the podcast from his US high altitude training camp where he's currently preparing to defend his medals in the delayed Tokyo Olympics later in the summer. Joe hears how Mo maintains focus on the starting lines of the biggest races on the planet and how his family have helped him through the ups and downs of professional sport. And that Mo's obsession with following football helps him switch off from the pressures of training. This is sunshine in a podcast. Joe Wicks is here for you, and he won't stop until you're fit and happy. Producer: Clare Salisbury Editor: Dimitri Houtart A BBC Audio Bristol production for Radio 4
In this episode of The End of Sport Johanna is joined by Drs. Christienna D. Fryar and Matt Hodler to break down the white supremacist terrorist actions of swimmer Klete Keller in the January 6th attack against the US Capitol building and the white sport media's apologist portrayal of him. Dr. Fryar is a Lecturer in Black British History at Goldsmiths, University of London where she teaches about British colonial history, Black history, and much more, alongside researching the histories of disaster and sport. Dr. Hodler –a repeat guest on the show! - is an Assistant Professor of Sports Media & Communications at the University of Rhode Island. His research interests include racialized nationalism, gender, and international sport structures, mediated representations of sport, internet memes, and swimming. Both of them are fellow swimmers with Johanna. The impetus for this episode emerged not only due to Klete Keller's horrendous actions, but also due to the sport media and swimming community's largely apologist portrayals of Keller and his actions. Our discussion brings a much-needed critique on Keller that has been mostly absent from the media pieces about him (outside of The Nation's analysis of Keller within the IOC's history of racism). Drs. Fryar and Hodler first help Johanna situate Keller's actions within the sport of swimming, arguing against the popular and comforting idea that his behavior is a deviation from the swimming community's values posited by The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Swimming World in particular. Their discussion articulates why modern swimming has a whiteness problem that historically and currently is centered on the white community, making Keller's actions a product of US swimming, and explicitly not an aberration of it nor of Trump's followers. Importantly, Dr. Fryar explains how – like point that Dr. Kevin Dawson made in our episode with him and that other scholars have shown – white Euro-Americans have consistently made bodies of water a site of intense trauma and pain for Black swimmers, which has led directly to horrendous drowning statistics. Our ensuing discussing shows how US swimming's white supremacy is a real public health concern that Keller contributed to through his white terrorism. We then turn to analyzing the media's white apologist portrayals of Keller, such as why their focus on his mental health issues, homelessness, and his white teammates and coaches' sympathetic responses is a white tactic not actually aimed at highlighting mental health issues; rather, it is an intentional attempt to individualize Keller's actions rather than tackle the core issue of his racism, terrorism, and where it fits within the swimming community. This is clear when we compare how Keller, Ryan Lochte, and Michael Phelps have been treated for their crimes with white gloves compared to Tamir Rice and the countless other Black boys and men who have been murdered by the police for far less and even non-criminal behaviors. Dr. Fryar points to the issue that sports journalists are not trained to analyze racism, classism, and other issues as evidenced by her students' research about how the Hillsborough incident was covered by the sports media. We end the conversation by dissecting the appallingly inadequate – but perhaps not surprising – statements made by USA Swimming and to a lesser extent Team USA. We question the ‘values' that USA Swimming supposedly stands for, and what their silence regarding Keller's white supremacy means for the sport and Black swimmers. Dr. Hodler mentions the Swimmers for Change episode with Lia Neal, Cullen Jones, and Anthony Ervin as being one of the first comprehensive spotlights on the racist discrimination that swimmers of color face in the sport. This conversation is very much a continuation of our Swimming Week series of episodes from September 2020. Check them out if you would like to hear more about the sport's discriminatory foundation, such as its white supremacy with Dr. Kevin Dawson here and Dr. Hodler here! More on Dr. Fryar (including her forthcoming book!), can be found here. You can find her on Twitter too! Check out the 2 pieces she mentioned in the episode, about the economic barriers that she and countless others faced in trying to join a club swim team for The Toast, and also for Media Diversified about why we need to address the racist stereotype that Black people cannot swim in light of Simone Manual's gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. More on Dr. Hodler can be found here, and you can find him on Twitter too! Check out one of his pieces about Phelps. For a transcription of this episode, please click here.
