1986 saw the release of the first two Companions of Doctor Who novels, original full-length books rather than novelizations of Doctor Who TV serials. There would only be one more after this one. Harry Sullivan's War was written by Ian Marter, who died tragically young, on his own 42nd birthday, just a couple of weeks after the book's release. Jim Sangster rejoins me as the guest for this week's book -- and also wrote this week's theme song! A video for Jim's son is found here. Song written by Jim Sangster and sung by Antony Owen. The first 8 minutes are an audio essay about the 1986 baseball season. If you're not a baseball fan, you will be after hearing this essay (or not). Recent guest Dale Smith recently penned an essay about Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma, the first Companions of Doctor Who novel, covered on this show (by Dale Smith!) just last month. The Power of 3 returns to the Land of Fiction! We're making a trip to Edinburgh today - the Scottish capital - as we join the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones as they encounter some hands. Not just some hands. Many hands! Kenny and John discuss this 2008 novel, and author Dale Smith pops by to chat about crafting this tale.
Here on Doctor Who Literature we take a brief scheduled break from the novelizations. It's still May 1986, and not only did we get the Doctor Who novelization of Timelash, but now we get the debut of the short-lived Companions of Doctor Who line. First up, Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma. Which doubles as the first original Doctor Who novel. Many more would follow. Joining me to break this one down is Doctor Who novelist Dale Smith. We'll also discuss Dale's recent Black Archive volume on The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. If you enjoyed this episode, please follow, subscribe, and rate us! It wouldn't be a series of Too Hot For TV without the On The Timelash boys. Join Dylan, Mark and Ben as they explore the best and worst that Scotland has to offer when it comes to Doctor Who. As always we answer the bring questions: How many is too many cocks? Who is reading the script on their lunch break? What is the worst thing John Barrowman has ever done?

This is a special tribute edition of Famous Lost Words as we honour the life and music of Robbie Robertson. Today, we go back in the archives for some excellent interview clips with Robbie – first from the early ‘70s when he was still in The Band – and then to 1998 as he talks about his solo work. Robertson talks about hooking up with Bob Dylan in the mid ‘60s and also the creation of “The Basement Tapes”. Then, Robbie talks about his 1998 album “Contact From The Underworld of Redboy”. He explains to interviewer Dale Smith how thrilling it was to create music that celebrated his indigenous heritage. We also tell the story Robbie's first celebrity encounter – with Buddy Holly. And we hear about how Robbie wrote his first songs. Plus – Elton John explains how he was influenced by The Band much more than he was by Dylan. Robbie Robertson passed away on August 9, 2023 at the age of 80. The Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Musik: Adi Zukanovic. (Sendt første gang 25. april).

This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Producer, Musician, Innovator (and sometimes actor) Don Dixon talks with Chris about a new live album featuring him, Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter and several people out of the Winston-Salem music scene of the late 70s and 80s titled: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Celebrating the Winston-Salem Sound. It's a live recording of a special 2018 concert featuring members of what has been dubbed "The Combo Corner."The album is due out on May 7th; the performance featured original members of bands including Arrogance, Little Diesel, Sacred Irony, and Rittenhouse Square —including Mitch Easter (Let's Active); Peter Holsapple, Will Rigby, and Chris Stamey (the dB's); singers Don Dixon, Dale Smith, Lynn Blakey, Bob Northcott; and many others — as they played together on May 12, 2018, at Winston-Salem's Ramkat club. With the added excellence of the Occasional Orchestra (live strings, percussion, and brass), music direction by Doug Davis (Vagabond Saints' Society), and stops along the way for affectionate renditions of then-favorites by Bubble Puppy, the Easybeats, the Music Machine, the Electric Prunes, the Beatles, and even Kool and the Gang, there is a lot for music lovers to appreciate in Yesterday's Tomorrow. We also play music from Adrian Belew, Marshall Crenshaw and more.
