Corner! Sharp! Behind! For anyone who's ever worked in a restaurant, you know these words mean a lot. It's your language. For marketers, this is more like KPIs, ABM, ICP, Demand Gen. Using the lingo, the jargon, the correct terminology, is a powerful tool when you're trying to reach and resonate with your target audience. You want to speak their language. This means doing some market research to learn industry terms and how they're used. This will also tell you a lot about what your audience cares about. And when you get it right, you'll know. Your engagement will rise and so will your ROI.This is what we're talking about on today's episode with JP Lespinasse, VP of Brand Marketing at Lightcast. JP and the Remarkable team are watching FX's The Bear. Together, we're talking about speaking the language of your audience, serving your audience what they crave, using familiar story recipes, and much, much more. So make yourself a sandwich and tuck in for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, JP LespinasseJP Lespinasse is VP of Brand Marketing at Lightcast. He has over 25 years of marketing, communications and partnerships experience. Previously, he served as Head of Content Marketing at PayPal and Executive: Director of Content Strategy and Management at IBM. He has also worked at companies like Gap/Old Navy, NOKIA, and the NBA.About LightcastLightcast, which is the merger of Emsi and BurningGlass, is the largest integrated data provider of jobs, skills, roles, and occupational data in the world. They are a global pioneer in the collection and big-data analysis of information on the labor market. Their data provides the world's most detailed information about occupations, skills in demand, and career pathways. Their tools collect real-time data from over 40,000 sources every day, contributing to a database with over 1 billion job postings and billions of other data points. They combine that with curated input from dozens of other statistical sources, like government agencies, to provide the most complete view possible of the fast-changing labor market. They put that information to work for businesses, communities, and education providers by showing them the granular details and big-picture trends they need in their organizations.Whether you're interested in software salaries in Seattle, need new skills in New Zealand, or looking for anything in between, Lightcast data can provide the insight you need.About The BearThe Bear is a show about an award-winning chef who leaves his Michelin star restaurant to go back to his hometown after his brother passes away to take over his brother's sandwich shop. And so while struggling to keep the rowdy staff and messy kitchen running, he's also trying to process and grieve his brother's suicide. A lot of people who have worked in food service have said it's a realistic depiction of what it's actually like running a professional kitchen. At any moment it feels like it's going to all fall apart, and it deals with the health inspections, payroll, dirty floors, plumbing and all of the tiny details that make it seem real. It stars Jeremy Allen White as “Carmy” Berzatto, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the restaurant manager, Ayo Edibiri as the new sous chef, and more. The show was created by Christopher Storer for FX and has two seasons out on Hulu. The first season received 13 Emmy nominations including outstanding comedy series. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Bear: Serve your audience what they crave. Do research to understand their wants and needs. Then aim for continuous improvement. In The Bear, JP says that the main character, Carmi, knows that he can't keep making Michelin star-level food when he takes over his brother's sandwich shop. The customers just want the sandwich they know and love from The Beef. JP says, “For us as marketers and for Carmi and the staff at The Beef, it's so important that in those first few episodes, it wasn't about changing anything. It was just about really focusing and listening and understanding the audience. What do they want? What do they come back for? How do I continue to serve them that?” This is especially true for marketers joining a new company where you see room for improvement. Don't try to change everything at once. But make small changes along the way that will raise the quality of your output without alienating customers.Use familiar story recipes. We know the rags to riches, or in this case, riches to rags storytelling recipe. Because it works. Using these known recipes reels in your audience more easily because it feels familiar. It's something they can immediately relate to. Yet it doesn't mean the rest of the story is formulaic or that the ending is obvious. It's just a place to start and hook your audience. Plus twists and turns in the storyline later will be even more of a surprise. When it comes to The Bear, Ian says, “Everybody and their brother has been to Chicago. And everyone has been to a sandwich shop in Chicago. So this idea that is so familiar, which is like, ‘Person moves back home to Chicago and takes over a sandwich shop, even though they're Michelin star.' We just all immediately are like, ‘Okay, I've been to a sandwich shop in Chicago and I totally know how that feels.'” Make it feel real by showing the good, the bad and the meh. You will speak most effectively to marketers by acknowledging the less glamorous and even mundane parts of their job. JP said it best when he said The Bear “took off because all of these folks who had worked at restaurants were like, ‘Yep, that's exactly how it is.' It's just so important to speak authentically to your audience.” And Ian adds, “If you don't really care, if you want to do the Grey's Anatomy version of it, right? Like, that's fine too, and it probably will be really commercially successful. But you won't get the diehards. And in today's day and age where the diehards are so vocal, it's a much more valuable currency to get the little details right.” So The Bear doesn't shy away from the feeling of losing sense of time when you're in the weeds, swamped with orders, or the payroll, plumbing, and no-shows. That's why it resonates.Quotes*”Marketers sometimes do ourselves a disservice. You've written 17 drafts of this webpage before it goes up. And so by the time it goes up, you're sick of it. And you're ready to change it immediately. The audience has never seen it before, right? The average person who comes to a webpage, they stay for a minute and a half, right? Like, so they're not going deep into all the individual words, the pictures and how you've architected it. So just let it sit. Let it breathe.” - JP Lespinasse*”Back when I worked at IBM, we canceled and reworked a whole campaign because we'd done all this due diligence and were going to put some messaging out to the developer audience. And then at the last minute, we're like, ‘You know what? We should show this to some developers before we put it out into the world.' And so we invited them over for pizza and a chat, and they're like, ‘Yeah, that's not how we talk. That's how the movies show how we talk, but that's not really authentically how we talk.' And so we used all their feedback to rework the campaign.” - JP LespinasseTime Stamps[0:54] Meet JP Lespinasse, VP of Brand Marketing at Lightcast[1:23] What's remarkable about The Bear?[4:26] What does JP do at Lightcast?[7:54] What's The Bear about?[20:11] How was The Bear created? We also discussed how politics was impacting the workplace and how it was likely to get worse with a Presidential election pending. We also touched on the following: Should business owners be telling their workers how to vote? When did American flags in the office become offensive? And what is the proper way to discriminate in your hiring practices? Without a doubt, some listeners will be offended by the commentary in this episode. Are you one of them? On today's show we discuss Woke human resources and “diversity, equity, and inclusion” policies are rendering the modern workplace into an ideological killing field. Not battlefield – killing field. DEI is exterminating critical thinking, putting all workplace relationships in the hands of the most sensitive, the most aggrieved, and often the least innovative and capable members of the workforce, and it has already resulted in race-based mass layoffs. As the President of a community college, Dr. Downey has a deep interest in the evolution of higher education to meet the growing needs of today's workforce. As you will hear in the episode, there are stark realities facing all of all of us in the coming decades. Much of our conversation connects with a recent article by Emsi called the Demographic Drought – the coming sans-demic. We'll talk about the immediate labor force needs and how higher education must find a response to the widening gap between those needs and traditional degrees, in order to avoid a "Hunger Games" recruitment environment. About Our GuestDr. John A. Downey became the fifth President of Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, Virginia, in 2009. Prior to being named president, he served as the Vice President for Instruction and Student Services and in various other roles at the College since 1992. Before arriving at Blue Ridge, Dr. Downey worked in student services offices at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, Massachusetts. Downey received his Bachelor of Arts degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. He completed his doctoral program in Higher Education Administration at the University of Virginia, where he was awarded the Annette Gibbs Research Publication Award. Downey served on three of the most recent Virginia Community College System (VCCS) strategic planning development committees and chaired the 2021 Strategic Initiatives Task Force. He has served as the chairperson, or as a member, of numerous community boards, including the Shenandoah Valley Partnership for Economic Development, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, the Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board, the Harrisonburg City Rotary Club, On The Road Collaborative, and the GenEdge Alliance Board of Trustees (formerly the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Extension Partnership).Under his leadership, BRCC has garnered recognition from around the state for its progressive workforce initiatives and partnerships. In 2010, he was recognized as the most supportive president of the year at the Enactus (formerly SIFE) National Exposition. Blue Ridge Community College has consistently been recognized throughout the past decade by the Chronicle of Higher Education's “Great Colleges to Work For” program. John lives with his wife, Sandy in Harrisonburg, VA. Together they raised three daughters who all currently work in public service professions.

On this episode of the Talent Magnet Institute Podcast Mike explores true leadership in light of the Great Resignation. He also discusses the Great Realization, and how leaders can use these principles to improve their leadership as well as create better environments for their employees. Mike posits that the Great Resignation is happening because of the Great Realization: people are taking stock of their lives and realizing that where they are is not where they wanted to be. They are changing jobs, and resigning because they're prioritizing their life goals, their families, and their careers. [2:39] If you influence people, you're a leader, and as a leader, people are watching how you respond to situations and problems. The pandemic has made this very clear, Mike says. The Great Realization has made us think critically about what we want to be doing, and who we want to be doing it with. We don't want to work with leaders who aren't responsive and proactive. [6:43] Mike talks about research papers on the Economic Drought from EMSI and The Global Workforce. Research has found that there are fewer people in the workforce now than years ago, and fewer people are looking for traditional full-time jobs. [8:10] Leaders nowadays - and especially in the future - need to be more compassionate, empathetic, and patient now. They also need to be more focused on their professional development. If you do not develop yourself as a leader, you cannot develop others. You need to recruit employees and build a pipeline, but most importantly, you need to create a culture where people want to work with you, and furthermore, stay with you. [13:55] Leadership is a privilege and leaders must view it as such. You have the opportunity to help others realize their full potential and become their best selves. Be proactive when it comes to talent development. Create an environment where employees are valued and supported, not one where everything is a competition. Create fair and inclusive environments that invite people to bring their whole selves to work. [16:55] Mike talks about the course on the Talent Magnet Institute's website that he created, that helps individuals better their leadership skills. [22:10] At the Talent Magnet Institute, the goal is to build employers who create organizations that encourage their employees to bring their authentic selves. [26:06] Mike's closing remarks are an encouragement to leaders to become more proactive, never give up, and make use of the tools and resources available out there to become the best leader they can be. “How you are able, as an organization, to reconfigure resources like Skills and have the ability to allocate the right talents in your organization at the right time-- I think it's also a competitive advantage.” So says our guest this week, Patrick Coolen, Global Head of People Analytics, HR intelligence & Organizational Design, and we don't think many people would disagree with him. But how to allocate? Based in Amsterdam, Patrick is leading the charge on Skills at ABN AMRO, a large Dutch-headquartered bank, to do just that—make Skills a competitive resource for his enterprise—so he has some ideas and experience to share on what he and his team see as the answer. The result is one of our most interesting traveller's tales so far on the Skills Odyssey, encompassing everything from pragmatics on how to start with people analytics, the usefulness of Emsi data, a good deal of Dutch common sense and a rather beguiling metaphor on, er, soup. Trust us: you're going to go with it!

Listen to Sheridan Benard share his story which started by him taking a job before graduating! He spread his last years coursework over two years…why? He's someone with maturity beyond his years and loves a challenge. He's someone who loves what he does, but he didn't take his role at EMSI primarily for that. Mark and Sheridan both stumbled into roles they love which is an interesting discussion. Sheridan discusses some of the data that companies are using right now to make decisions specifically on how to hire talent, where the talent is and the external factors that employers and candidates are dealing with. They touch on being in the office and how they view this new hot button item in the workplace! Connect with Sheridan on LinkedIn Check out his company EMSI

The declining birth rate has come for most advanced countries, and the US is no exception. Now, we are starting to see what a labor market reshaped by years of low fertility looks like and what the future may hold. Ron Hetrick of Emsi and Rob Sentz, formerly of Emsi, joined me to discuss their https://economicmodeling.com/2021/05/04/demographic-drought/ (report) on what they're calling a “sansdemic” — literally, “without people” — labor market. They focused on how this low fertility will affect the economy and what, if anything, the government can and should do in response to these developments. It’s getting harder and harder to hire people, and one of the reasons is people’s interest in just “taking a break” from the job they’re in. What’s going on? In this podcast, I discuss what’s going on in the job market and what you, as an employer, should do about it. I also discuss: A) What is your employment brand and how do you “burnish” it? B) How do you build a world-class recruiting function and why are recruiters more important than ever? C) How do you better use data for recruiting and by the way, What is the Burning Glass – EMSI merger all about? D) What are the two big approaches to Employee Experience and how do you make your company a truly “great” place to work? E) What should you be doing about internal recruiting now that it’s harder than ever to recruit? I also walk you through how Bank of America has reinvented its entire employee experience and what you can learn from John Jordan and his team. (Read the study here.) Join me. Dr. Kjell Christophersen is the co-founder and recently retired senior economist at Emsi, a company that, for decades, has produced high-quality economic impact studies on community colleges. In this episode, we talk about a range of topics that he explores in his new book, Community Colleges as Economic Engines. He shares how Emsi carefully and thoroughly measures the net impact of community colleges and how community colleges can and should use their economic impact studies to gauge, not just what they are worth to their students and communities, but also how they can be even stronger economic engines for their regions. Thanks again to community college student Jean Luc Gagnon for creating and producing our theme music. Kelly Ryan Bailey, Global Skills Evangelist at Emsi joined the podcast to talk about forging new partnerships with local employers by creating a shared skills language between us.
The changing nature of work is providing both the fastest job growth and income gains to those with higher levels of skills and education. It's vital then for governors, mayors, and education leaders to have better, real time data about their labor markets, including the skills most in demand. This has become even more important as leaders work to help workers who became unemployed during COVID-19 find a path back to employment. EMSI provides data and tools for government agencies and education institutions to ensure their training programs match the labor demands in their regions.
Rob Sentz, Chief Innovation Officer at labor market data giant, Emsi, shares strategies for preparing college students to find their niche in an unsettled economy.

I have just finished a book. I needed some promotional expertise. A friend recommended Marsha Friedman, so I called her. I knew nothing of her company, but was struck by her no - BS approach: “Don’t count on your book for a living.” was one of the first things she said. I’ve been in contact with other PR operations, and the very hazy quality of their service rang warning bells. EMSI, Marsha’s firm, is well-established and a bit of a maverick. They deliver rather than suggest. Her story is interesting, her staff smart and enthusiastic, and her brand (like mine) is a bit off-center. Marsha embraces relationships as the core of her business.
